    Hi Dan - So I watched most of the new ZV-E1 reviews. Man, you just nailed it - this is comprehensive (without being too technical), honest in pointing out the (serious) shortcomings which everyone will have to apply to their own needs / context, and fun. Great talking-head vs. examples balance. Thank you - this is really informative, well-done, v. useful review!

    Hi Dan. Thank you for the great video.
    For client work (photo, video, outdoor, but also real estate) and also vlogging and run and gun, would you more recommend S5II or which camera (or if money is not a factor, EOS R3)

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Appreciate that. So the S5II is solid but right now I'd say the Canon R6II is probably the best for doing anything because it has full frame oversampled video up to 4k60, great Ibis, amazing autofocus, and 24mp should be plenty for photography. I have both the R6II, R5, and R3 and rarely use the R3 because unless you need to shoot 30fps, the R6II can do just about everything else at less than half the price. Go with the R5 if you need more resolution although it has a 30 minute record limit for video which is annoying

    • @Lifetogo
      @Lifetogo ปีที่แล้ว

      @@learningcameras Thank you Dan for the fast feedback. So missing on the R6 II compared to R3 is only: 4K 120 and burst shooting not as great, but mostly great enough. Low light and ibis is the same on both? R6 II has also no record limit, no overheating and no 4K 60 APSC crop, correct? Thanks again and all the best from Thailand 👋

      P.S.: wobble with wide lenses is a problem and not as good as S5 II and ZV-E1 or also usable at 15 / 18 / 20mm (vlogging)?

    • @learningcameras

      The wobble can happen on Sony too but it's usually at the extreme wide angle so 16mm or wider with Ibis on

    Great review. It’s definitely a cool camera, but mostly it feels exciting as a glimpse at future cameras. I’m tempted by the low light, and dynamic stabilization, but other that that I honestly feel more tempted by the fx30 as a b cam despite the cropped sensor. I’m going to hold out for next full sized camera to offer that new stabilization.

    Too expensive. Maybe if it was 1499 will be a gaming changer. Also can you imagine if there was wifi for live streaming or not any overheating issues? Finally I think Sony should start making smaller Full Frame lenses and lighter. Good video.

    • @Samiam-mu5ln
      @Samiam-mu5ln ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'd be asking for too much at $1499. This isn't suppose to compete with the Canon R8, two different camera bodies targeted at two different audiences. If they did do $1499 USD, it would be heavily crippled and lacking features and then everyone would still complain

    I think that Sony is trying to squeeze this 12mp sensor as much as possible and after that they will start to implement the sensor from the A1 in more cameras (maybe 2-3 years from now).
    If you ask me the best Sony sensor for video to this point is the one in the A1. It gives much more possibilities for cropping and oversampling, the IQ is better and I think it has less noise too. I also think that they caped it at 32000ISO in SLOG3 for a reason and the reason is that it destroys the 12mp sensor cameras at high iso without having that noisy gap between 3200ISO and 12800ISO.
    Also Sony is now moving towards more specialized products in order to make us buy more cameras. Why selling us 1 camera for photo and video when they can sell us 2 (one for photo, one for video). Panasonic and Nikon started making the cameras we want when they went downhill with the $$$, Sony are in a point where they can do whatever they want without caring too much for the user. This means - no software updates, no price competition, ... as a Sony user I am following Panasonic moves closely :D

    Hi Dan and thanks for this great video.
    Just one question about ISO in S-Cinetone: are the ISO as good as in SLOG-3 ?In this mode, is it also better to start with the first dual ISO(640 I think) or can we start in S-Cinetone at Iso 100? And what about the second dual ISO in S-Cinetone ? Ca we easily record at ISO 12800 as well or better to stop at a lower ISO ? Many thanks for everything you are doing on your channel 😀

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So ISO performance in SLOG-3 is great as long as you're at the BASE ISO. It's only when you start increasing beyond that where the camera uses less noise reduction and you end up with a bit more grain. If you can shoot at base iso, (800 and 12,800 on this one), don't worry about the noise in SLOG because it's low. Now, if you want to shoot at 3200 ISO, it will look super grainy in SLOG so definitely switch to S-Cinetone which will use more noise reduction or just move to the next base ISO in SLOG at 12,800 which will actually have lower noise than 3200. Hope that makes sense! Appreciate it

    • @learningcameras

      I would be surprised if we see an SIII replacement in the next year. Sony has surprised me before but that is not a camera that needs upgrading just yet. They could firmware update it with most of the new features from the E1 which should be easy since they have the same sensor and processor and that would easily buy them another year. Artificial Overheating Genius--that's the way I describe it from the buzz on the internet. Sad, with Sony's tech engineering background that they really don't make all of their products A+. Their background in heat sinks and coolant fans evidences that when they want to, they can and will make solid products. Even the recent FX30--sure its apsc--shows that they are aware, sometimes, that serious filmmakers do exist in that neverland out there. Let's hope that Sony listens to reviewers like u and make some major changes fast before their competitors like Panasonic-Lumix take a huge slice of their potential market share! 😎😎

I do some event video work... and if you are in the middle of something like a hot air balloon festival, having only a few minutes of shooting before the camera turns off is a significant limitation, unfortunately. Other than that, it would be almost perfect.... Lack of a second slot? I can work around that with the HDMI recorder here...Do dual recording... but having it shut down in the middle of a launch? So when it comes to photos, he's not wrong...in reality it's more complicated and depends more on the actual camera model, if there is a dual ISO or ISO irrelevant sensor, and where that trigger happens. But overall it's true for photos. However, if you are always printing, doing pixel editing (like skin touch up) or cropping, starting with a medium to high resolution sensor is usually better and if you are exporting from the camera straight to the web without noise reduction or downsampling properly, starting with a low resolution sensor will give better low light performance. For video though, it's way more complicated to the point that I would say more often, low resolution is better for video performance (although technically resolution isn't the most important factor in that). But for photos, yes, by in large, he is right that in the past 5 years, most cameras are ISO irrelevant and especially with backside illuminated sensors, they are less dependent on the pixel size (how many pixels they have) and more dependent on processing and sensor quality. They are also less dependent on what ISO you actually shoot with. Most cameras (for photos) will look just as good if you shot underexposed at 800ISO and then boosted the exposure 4 stops in post than if you shot a properly exposed 6400 ISO in the camera. But again, video is not the same

      @@learningcameras Ohhhhhhh whattt? So is that directly related to the megapixels? If you don’t mind, do you know the correlation between photo megapixels and video resolution on a camera?
      And what’s the dif between a photo and a screenshot from a video?? Currently on my iPhone (different I know that’s what I mention it) instead of taking product photos - while recording my video, I just record some product shots. That way in the editing room I can go frame by frame and screen grab the exact right frame to turn into a still. It works amazingly in 4k right now. Maybe as long as my subject isn’t moving, this would work on a Sony cam as well right?
      Also does the A7siii crop in on features as well? I like the A7iv having the 7k. Just feels safer. And the better cooling, higher MP. Still sounding like the better option I mean the video quality won’t be THAT much of a downgrade from zve1 right? However. I have to ask myself how often I’ll even use those features that crop in. Currently on my iPhone I’m running 4k 30 and I don’t even zoom in, only in post. So I might have to dial down my analysis and be like dude. You’re just gonna point and shoot. With studio lighting. Don’t worry about that stuff. I don’t think a7iv crops at 4k 30.
      And one reviewer said a7iv has a crisper 4k than the zve1. Not sure why he said that. He doesn’t have the zve1 but he’s knowledgeable about specs and how they work. He also said crisp doesn’t mean better hahaha dammit. Idk I like crisp though I think. My mission is for viewers to see exactly how the product will look in their hands.

    Some of these AI specs are quite interesting. Especially that "auto framing locked on center" mode. Excellent for dynamic product shots. But as you say, its curious they went with the 1:1 4K A7S3 sensor since the IQ gets degraded with each crop of those AI features. I can't help but feel this camera would have made much more sense as an APS-C system using the 6K FX30 sensor at half the price. That would have also strongly reduced the overheating issues which are massive and total deal breakers. The obsession with full frame for video is becoming counter-productive on such small bodies.

      I agree with you. I think the FX30 would have been a better starting point given the problems with the SIII sensor with these "AI" crop tools and cost. You can use full frame glass for distance shots but if you need to go wide angle, full frame lenses aren't wide enough and you have to sacrifice the lens quality to find APSC options. But Sony actually has more APSC wide angle lenses than I thought though...Sony's stuck at F4 for zooms and F1.8 for primes but there are some 3rd party F2.8 zooms and wide aperture primes too.

Why not, they created a following with the A7S3. It just feels old now. Its best thing going is 4K 60P with no crop. That’s certainly good, but the overheat issue pretty much is a turn away. I get it, if this doesn't overheat, it literally is better than the a7siii and maybe even FX3 in almost everyway. For $2200, you can't use it professionally, really.

    How is Sony able to lie and say that when they crop in, they use their upscaling, so there’s not a loss in quality? I haven’t seen that anywhere, but I remember another reviewer said that sony was making a claim.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They never made that claim to me but I did a few tests and it is a noticeable loss in quality which would make sense since they are doing a full pixel readout thus digitally cropping in and then having to make up the extra pixels to get back to a 4k readout. It's a cool feature but will take a quality hit. Now if you're shooting 1080p, you will not see a quality hit so maybe that's what they would have been referring to??? But if this feature starts making it to cameras with oversampled 4k, my guess is you will not see a quality hit when using it which will be awesome

      Haha, don't quite agree but either way that's definitely not the mission of the Hummer EV. It still uses up insane amounts of electricity so no one should be making the case that this is an efficient or planet friendly truck. But it's fun as hell to drive this 10,000lb beast to 60 in 3 seconds with a turning radius equivalent to a Civic! Trust me, the EV version of this truck is 10x more fun to drive than the old gas version was. Electric cars have some driving advantages with speed and the ability to have a motor at each wheel for traction

    Way too expensive here in Europe for what it offers. And, dare I say it, hardly competes with a decent smartphone like the Samsung S23 ultra that costs much less and offers so much more.

      I think it’s overpriced too. Yes, it has a lot of features, but it’s unreliable as a professional tool, and none of the features work well enough (in my opinion).
      This would have been a perfect every day camera for a7siii/fx3/fx6 owners to throw in a backpack and get great quality video when out and about, if it was under $1500.
      I can’t imagine a customer profile I would recommend this camera to as a primary camera at this price.
      With that said, many will buy it, and in a few months many will sell it. $1300-1400 used price would be a good deal.

    ZV-E1 seems almost pointless! I have not idea why Sony decided to make this camera. The ZV-E10 will do perfectly the same function interchangeable lens vlogging except for the new bells and whistle. Not even an EVF to differentiate it from the ZV-E10 except its full frame.
