This lesson is incredible. Here’s how simple this whole issue is: until this October and until the siege on Gaza started, I agreed with the media and with a lot of people that Israel has a right to exist, that criticizing Israel equals antisemitism, and I was completely ignorant about everything on this matter. I didn’t know squat about any part of the history of Israel, I didn’t know about the Nakba, I only heard Arafat’s name, and I never bothered with doing any research on the strip of Gaza because for the longest time to me that was a distant issue, I had no idea what it was or even where it was. I had no opinion on it. And the moment I flipped was when I heard and saw documentation on how many victims Israel made in just a couple of weeks. Civilian victims. I looked it up, on my own. Found out about mr. Finkelstein, checked his credits, listened to his videos. And then, with some basic knowledge in narcissistic, abusive behavior especially in cults, I started connecting the dots. I reached the same conclusions everyone in the “Free Palestine” movement has reached. And I’m still learning, and the more i learn the more horrified I am by all of it.
My main reason for believing Mr. Finkelstein aren’t just his credits, the respect he enjoys in academia and as a historian, activist and author. It’s mostly the fact that he was born and raised from a Jewish family who lived through the Holocaust. And this is my question: why would so many Jewish people show up and protest what is going on? Why would so many Orthodox Jews fully stand on the side of liberating Palestine. Do ALL of these people harbor self-hate? Every single one of them?
I don’t think so.
And then I collected information about what’s been going on, about the constant lying from the IDF and Netanyahu’s government about nearly everything, about the self-victimization, about the accusations of antisemitism, and I agree again with Mr. Finkelstein on this too: when someone’s entire argument boils down to name-calling and ad hominem accusations, according to the rules of debate, that means you’re right. I have seen documentaries, videos, interviews, and they all featured JEWISH people saying Palestine should exist in peace. That a democratic solution should be found. That the priority is peace and prosperity for both peoples.
And then I saw and heard and read about so much evidence of how a large number of Israeli Zionists feel and talk. Not one shred of evidence for anything. So far, the only arguments I’ve seen are “tell Hamas to give back the hostages” (they gave several proposals to negotiate the release of the hostages and they HAVE released a bunch of them and Israel never even paused the sieges even as a sign of good faith) and “October 7”, which is quite in bad faith given how these people seem to think there was no history in this “conflict” before October 7, and that Israel doesn’t have a history of “mowing the lawn” (which is a terrible expression to describe regular, unprovoked mass murder) and I will not be the vulgar person to point out how out the 1200-1400 casualties of the October 7 episode is not a 1:1 relation, and how the conservative number of 11.200 total civilian casualties in Gaza has a relation of 1 casualty, circa, 8 Israeli casualties… actually, yes, I AM going to be that vulgar person. Going by very CONSERVATIVE estimates on the Palestinian death toll (11.200) and overblown estimates even Israel lowered (I am using the number of 1.400 although Israel has now said the victims were 1.200, but nevermind about that) the relation is 1 to 8. 8 Palestinian lives for 1 Israeli death. And I am doing so because actually YES, it DOES matter. These are human lives being lost for something they were never responsible for. For absolutely NO good reason.
History, logic, proof, evidence, intersectional knowledge, human feelings. This is why I stand with the right of Palestinians to live free and dignified lives in peace, as Israel’s neighbors. I don’t think it’s complicated. And I don’t thin it’s impossible. Israel has around 90 nuclear weapons, an unbeatable army that defeated three different armies at once, support from every Western democracy. So if the concern is security, they have nothing to be afraid of. They can absolutely remove the blockade, let Palestinian regions run their own democratic elections (it’s been at least 15 years since they last had one, and Hamas was not what it is now at the time). You want to remove Hamas? Let Palestinians live with freedom and dignity, let them have jobs and food and resources again. And leave them alone. After a bit, the popularity of Hamas will decrease because, actually, before this surge Hamas was NOT popular and it only gained a vague majority after the beginning of this month long massacre. And why wouldn’t it be popular? Israel is massacring elder, disabled, newborn people, women, men, unarmed and defenseless, and Hamas is the only force fighting back against this slaughter.
“But Hamas started it!” You’ll say. Again, look at the history of this region, look at what’s been happening while the West wasn’t paying attention. Look at the immense injustices Palestinian people suffered time after time after time after time, look at the violence and dehumanization and the crimes the IDF committed against civilians way before all of this happened.
You cannot blame a small group of people for reacting against oppression. And you would not expect any other group of people to take if and never dish it back.
As Mr. Finkelstein said over and over again, this is not difficult and this is not complicated. If I can have a grasp on what’s been going on for 75 years within the span of a month, so can anyone else. And a lot of people have done the research, and all of us have reached the same exact conclusions independently. Especially Jewish people. You can’t, reasonably, call ALL of us antisemitic. Especially those of us who were never particularly interested in defending Muslim people, and still aren’t. Because i don’t care about religion, I’m an atheist and I don’t favor Muslims over Jewish people, not even a little bit, matter of fact for me the Muslim world is very alien to me, but what I see are HUMAN BEINGS, and I would say the same exact thing if this was happening to Christians, Jews, Hindus, Pagans, atheists, agnostics, I don’t care. People’s lives, freedoms and dignity are INFINITELY more important than any religion. If it was up to me, actually every public place would have an obligation to complete non-religious behavior, limiting religion only to people’s own private spaces and religious places and that is it, no matter who they are or which religion they practice.
I don’t care about anything anyone says unless it’s supported by history I can verify, and independently verified facts, verifications based on sources and evidence. I believe in rationality and human rights. And the human rights are overwhelmingly on the side of leaving Palestinians alone.
You know I struggle to articulate myself on consistent basis, but what you wrote was invigorating because it felt like you laid out everything I went through concerning this issue, especially encountering someone like Norman who has helped my understanding in leaps and bounds I thought were impossible, it's his sincerity, his humanity that focuses you in, I just wish more people gave him a chance because our civilization is suffering from starvation of truth and its not getting any better.

I'm IN the process of learning the true history behind this decades long one-sided massacre. I was just like you, being distant, then playing neutral and at some point leaning slightly towards Israel, but it never felt right. And then I snapped the fuck out of it, because the things I saw and heard, things I read, historical accounts and disgusting, inhuman acts committed by Israel throughout all these years, LONG BEFORE 7TH OCT OF 2023, that went UNDER THE RADAR!!!! **everything** is clicking now. I reallly admire Finkelstein. He's an example to all obfuscating academics: it is possible to explain any subject, no matter how complex, in terms accessible to most people. Richard Feynman is another example of this desire to educate everyone, not just the people in your club.

First I found Noam Chomsky. Then I found you. You speak TRUTH! I've been abandoned all my life due to my belief that only the truth is what matters. Everybody is so uninformed. And it's not their fault! When I was a Catholic kid, my mother taught me that God was love. And then she told me that everyone was equal in the eyes of God - except, she eventually told me - the Protestants. When I finally left home and began to read the bible, I was a sitting duck. It was my trip to Jerusalem that changed me. I still think there's something bigger (bigger than us all) goint on in this human drama. I left religion and decided to start believing in myself and that's when I came across Chomsky. Eventually I discovered Democracy Now, Chris Hedges and Alan Nairm, Paul Ray, Lawrence Wilkerson..... And yet I don't know what to do in my life. It's like I'm on the fence. We're all gonna die in a nuclear war.........And then I see the passion in people. People who rose up and did something - some little tiny little tiny little thing that began to snowball. I have no pretense. I just need to find the right people in this place called PEI and start something, something that may, just may, contribute to a, hopefully, boodless revolution. When I listen to you, I remember why I stopped going to the church I joined: The God of the Old Testatment is a WAR GOD. He promised a great nation to Abraham, but first the Israelites have to kill all the inhabitants of what is now Palestine. Finkelstein lecture is well constructed and thorough. After spending 40 years of his dedicated to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict I consider a treasure on this matter. He is a gem that’s unfortunately completely buried in a world that is patently one -sided bias towards Israel. There’s enough evidence to prove that’s Israel is apartheid racist oppressive state but no one can do anything to stop Israel.

Its amazing how about a week or two after this lecture the israeli's began a massacre and slaughtered over 1000 people.
People like Mr. Finkelstien are truly great because in a world that is filled materlialistic, selfish consumers it is great to see people who see through all that and devote their lives to worthy cause. When a country is established based on a religion or ethnicity, the manner in which it behaves….its government’s foreign and domestic policies and actions will, per force, rightly or wrongly, reflect upon that entire religion or ethnicity.
People are irrational.
They don’t distinguish between what a nation’s government does and the citizens of that nation.

Genes mix easily between cultures. The chances of you _not_ being related to any boss, tyrant, king in history are lower than you would suppose. You and your genes are survivors.
