    Myxo here. Thank you so much Simon for the great solve! I was very happy with this grid, but I didn't expect such high praise for it. Read my reply below for some insight that could be a spoiler for who hasn't solved the puzzle or watched the video yet.

      CtC featured "Arrow/Group Sum Sudoku" by ahaupt in 2020, which was one of the first videos I saw on the channel. I always found that puzzle extremely fascinating, as every single clue in the grid is used for the break-in logic. This puzzle (and some others I made recently) are my attempts at creating something with the same idea.

      @@Myxo-hv4ov Funny. I dabbled a bit before watching the video and I had this inkling that the sparsity of the clues meant they had to work together for the break-in. I just didn't have the time and energy to figure it out... was dabbling a bit with the wrong sets. I totally agree with Simon. The puzzle is astonishing in how it gives way and how it follows after.

    The fact that I can, now, glance at the grid and say, what about SET? and it be an effective way to get started in this puzzle is all, I say, all and entirely due to your (and Mark's) tutelage and demonstration of that over and over. Thanks for all of that instruction and inspiration, and for the video.

    Truly amazing setting. The layers of logic built into the clues and layout was truly amazing. Combining nested sets with a swordfish in a fairly sparse grid = perfection.
    Total solve time of 54:05. Fairly approachable once the initial beak in is spotted. This took me about 5 minutes of staring blankly at the puzzle until I heard Simon-wan's voice in my head whispering "Use the SET theory. Use the SET."
    Took another 5-10 minutes to determine the general makeup of the cells (with a minor easily made mistake which cost some time)

    Fantastic puzzle 👍🏻, and the second SET solve that I've managed to complete on my own without any help or hints from the video recently, which is definite progress for me! At least with this one it was reasonably clear that it _had_ to be SET because with such a simple ruleset and sparse grid there wasn't anything else it could be, and the syzygy telegraphed which rows and columns to use fairly well. Then after a little bit of maths to make the numbers dance, and the rest of it fell into place very nicely for a 23 minute solve.

  • @richardfarrer5616
    @richardfarrer5616 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    While I concede that Simon's solution path was a lot easier than mine, I'm still proud of working it out using some form of finned swordfish on rows 2, 5 & 8. If R2C1 wasn't 8 or 9, then there a swordfish on 9s as they can't be on the arrows. That keeps them out of the circles, which keeps 8s off the arrows, so there's another swordfish and R6C8 becomes impossible.
    Then if the fin is 9 it puts 8 in R1C2 and you need too many 8s in columns 5 and 8. So R2C1 is 8, and proceed from there.

Also how the arrows came back into the logic towards the end and not just in the break-in. The starting grid looks so clean and symmetrical, it's all just really gorgeous. Nice work.

    Wow, after the initial break in Simon's solve was significantly different than mine. Instead of eliminating the colored sets I reimplemented the original crossing sets of 3 rows and 3 columns to identify the contents. This used some of the same logic for identifying the locations of 1, 2, and 3 around the grid. Once the sets were filled in it left a swordfish on 9's on the intersections of the sets and it was just a matter of filling in the remaining corners of each box.

    I finished in 92 minutes. This was a great suduko. I saw it and immediately thought of SET Theory and to my surprise, I was actually able to do it. Seeing that it was SET Theory and actually able to do it was an incredible feeling. Solving the SET was a little harder, but I was able to prove that a 6 always belonged on the right side and that 3 kept giving too short of values. Therefore, I was able to get a 46 pair on the right and a 4 on the left middle. Then, I saw an amazing thing. I was actually able to spot a potential swordfish, or a pseudo swordfish, using the space between the arrows. I was able to rule out a 56 from r2c1 using that. It is quite incredible that in this sudoku, I was able to spot and complete the SET Theory as well as spot a potential swordfish. When I look back on my times at the beginning of subscribing to this channel, I am amazed at how far I have progressed. The things I am able to see has been a confidence boost in other aspects to my life. Thanks Simon, Mark, and the rest of CTC community, and even this puzzle itself for showing this about myself. Great Puzzle!

    I was so pleased to recognize the use of set on my own, but I couldn't quite get my mind around how to balance the highers and lowers. I did get the candidates penciled in just trying to minimize, but hadn't proved why they needed to be minimized (with that one exception). I need listen again to the part when Simon talks about "5 to play with". I did hum along with the delightful logic after that involving 1s, 2s, and 3s. Quite fun.

    There is a simple insight after the break-in that on each row with arrows the 1,2,3 are on the arrows, thus creating one arrow with a 3,4 or 5 sum on each of these rows.

  • @asifhassan9140
    @asifhassan9140 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I did the break in a little differently after getting the sets. The renban cells in the outer set (green) are guaranteed to be adjacent digits to at least one of the renban cells in the inner set (blue). So subtracting that pair from both sets makes the set totals differ by exactly 1. Do this four times, and the set totals differ by 4,2, or 0, because each subtraction could make either total go up or down. But all that's left in green is the given 5 and 7, so green is 12, and blue is 16,14,12,10, or 8. Minimizing the remaining digits in blue gives 15, so it's 16 and you can pencil mark the cells as minimum plus 1. The max reach of the renban lets you pencil mark the whole renban (including the digits removed from blue, which is good because we didn't know which one it was). Restoring green and blue to the original sets (before subtracting renban cell pairs), the pencil marks in green now give us an upper bound for all the green cells except the upper left one, but we know that is one higher than the adjacent blue. Minimizing blue and maximizing green now constrains all the cells to the same things Simon got, with the same caveat about the upper left renban cells being unknown.

  • @TurquoizeGoldscraper
    @TurquoizeGoldscraper 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    58:25 for me - I made a mistake early on when minimaxing the renbans and forgot the one in box 1 didn't have to be minimized, it's just that R2C1 was the bigger one.

  • @monumentairworks
    @monumentairworks หลายเดือนก่อน

    Alternate method to solve: after following SET to find out the totals and get the 234, 234, and 456 renbans, then RECOLOR the sets, delete the duplicates, and you have a set of greens and blues that must match exactly (because you haven't deleted the arrows and sums). This method is so elegant that I'm convinced it must be what the setter intended. In fact, I was surprised when you were able to solve it without doing that.

    38:52 after a look at the video after I broke it. My break in was "mostly" good (and I'm surprised I found it), except when I calculated that the digits on the three cell purple lines had to be as small as possible, I took that to mean the digits on ALL the purple lines, so I made the one in box 1 something like a 5,6 pair. After looking at the video, I realized my mistake, undid my work until that point and was able to solve it.

  • @tiemen9095
    @tiemen9095 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It took me longer to find the break in, and after the break-in my solution path actually felt pretty different. My way of solving it was much more complicated though. I focused first on the 9s in rows 2,5 and 8 and then the 8s to figure out that there couldnt be any more 8s and 9s in circles other than r6c8, and that r6c8=r2c1=8. This logic was super convoluted and, as it turns out, not even necessary to the solution path 😅.

    Not a native German speaker, but close enough that I'll hasard a guess at the title. It's like...marching at the exact opposite frequency - you march "left right left right" someone marching in gegentakt would go "right left right left". I'm sure there is an English term for it too, because it's also a thing in music and waves. I just can't think of it (English is also not my native language 😂)

    Gah. Faulty logic disaster.
    Close to the start (after the set breakdown), I placed a 9 on the 2-cell renban. Logic started out fine....
    If you don't place a 9 there, you get a swordfish on 9's (can't go on the arrows in rows 2, 5, 8.) True. (You can see it in final.)
    But, then, I asked, "where does 8 go".
    Another swordfish, where does 7....etc. it breaks.

    “Gegentakt” sounds pretty german, but it isn’t a real existing word… It’s more a created word by two parts a) gegen = against; b) takt = beat.
    In this occasion I would translate “Gegentakt” with something like between “of the beat”, “against clockwise” and “counteraction”.
    I hope, this was helpfull? 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Really unfortunate that the hover-over thumbnail for this video spoils the SET part of the break-in. Thankfully arrow sudokus are often the most obvious for picking the sets so I'd have spotted it anyway. I did the balancing max/min with algebra and found it stunning.
    I'm sad to say I then veered off in the wrong direction initially, by chasing possible swordfish on 9s & 8s in R258, when I should've just pursued sudoku and colored the 23 pairs. Probably why it took me 2 hours.
    There were several X-wings on the right path, but I'm curious if anyone else used swordfish logic--I couldn't eliminate the fin in r2c1 as a possibility, so I gave up.

      I did this puzzle a week ago on LMD. Didn't use swordfish, not knowingly anyway. Initially failed to notice that the renban in box 1 wasn't a chevron and kept all the numbers low, only to find out that this lead to a 3x3 extended X-wing of [9,8,7] and the puzzle broke on 6. Due to the renban element in r2c1 not being part of a chevron shape this was the only candidate that could break the bad recursion I knew it therefore had to be out of [7,8,9] (and of course r1c2 1 lower) but I could only eliminate 7 and ended up running the lengthy paths for both remaining options.

    This is def a question of are there diff solutions with diff pair of givens in same spot...and does it solve the same way.
    This is the 3rd-4th set-repl design I manage to see after all these years, only cuz it's blatant
    .still wanna be able to see D45 trick once.

      The break-in would be the same with different givens that add to 12, but these specific givens are the only ones that lead to a unique solution without any additional clues

    Minimising blue makes green be maximum 31 if that helps.
    I think that equals the sum

      The somewhat cleaner break-in logic is that the blues have to sum to at least 31, and the maximum the greens can be if the blues sum to 31 is also 31. We're not *forced* to be at that minimum, but we do have to maintain that balance, which ends up preventing us from either increasing or decreasing the digits on the 3-cell renbans; the only freedom is that we can increase (but not decrease) the 2-cell renban.

    Damn I'm so annoyed at myself. I immediately figured out the trick. Like within a minute I figured out not only to use 3 lines of set theory, but also understood the only way the puzzle is solvable is if red is maxed and blue min...but I did the math wrong and wasted like 20 minutes.
    After resetting (including timer) I managed to get 19:57 and I think I genuinely could have gotten around that to begin with if I didn't screw up basic arithmetic.
    Anyway, quite a fun puzzle. That's two puzzles recently where I could basically skip a step by just realizing that if wasn't max of one color and min of the other, it'd be unsolvable cause theres no clues that could possibly reduce the degree of freedom.

    36:22 It would be more helpful if you looked at row 8.
    Where's the 4 in that row? R8C2 of course.
    You get an [89] pair in column 5.
    R3C5 cannot be 8 or 9. R2C6 cannot be 7 or 8.
    Where is 8 and 9 in row 2? They are in R2C1 and R2C2.
    This makes R1C2 a 7, and R2C1 an 8 and R2C2 a 9.
    Then lots of things happen.

    Second ever set puzzle I’ve been able to break in (and therefore complete) hurray.
    Given it took Simon such a short amount of time I felt for sure I’d missed something obvious but no - solved it the same way only much slower.
    Me tip for set recognition is pick to colours and highlight things to go into sets and then try to work it out backwards. What rows/columns/3x3 boxes would I need to colour for this to make sense. From make the arrows and circles different colours I worked out when I’d ideally want overlap to cancel out and then I picked my 3 rows and 3 columns. A year ago I’d have never broken into this and any set video I watched whilst I could follow jt i couldn’t naturally spot the set theory.

    Wow! that's incredible how renbans and arrows interact with each others to form stronger constraints. That interaction is absolutely not obvious, it's actually totally invisible. You need to resort to an unrelated nifty trick (not spoiling here) to figure out the "overall combined constraint" to break in. @Myxo-hv4ov, that's genius wizardry!
