    The combo of these self-watering pots from Amazon, and my DIY pon mix has been a combo that my plants love. My fiddle leaf fig, gloriosum, alocasia black velvet, and scindapsis (moonlight and silver hero) are all thriving. The other ones from amazon that I love are the square ones with the water meter tube. I have my calathea musaica in a self watering pot with chunky potting mix, and I just counted 6 new growth points, and my all my ferns in my potting mix have all shot up in growth. For the ones with pon, I now feritlize with General Hydroponics 3-bottle system but I am sure any diluted liquid fert would work.

      Thanks for your comment. I've doing some research and using LECA + perlite mix in a self watering planter, I'm thinking you can have maximum aeration, will never lead to root rot and but keep the plant constantly feeding on the water and nutrients.

    I have been self-watering for almost a year now and it was the best decision that I have made for my plants. I have ALL of my calatheas, marantas, stromanthes, ferns and alocasias in them and they love it!!! I even have my dwarf fiddle leaf fig and a few pileas, fittonias, and an iresine growing in self-watering pots and they are thriving as well. Glad to see them being tried and discussed. Cool, I have those too, they work well for most plants I've tried as long as they like damp soil, as you said :) It's good to let them dry out occasionally to avoid fungus gnats, though. Also, if you don't like the look of the corrugated plastic, you can use the insets in regular pots of the right size too!

My golden pothos, aglaonema and philodendron are thriving so far. My hoya seems to like it too. Its a wait and see game with the crotons so far. Will update in two weeks.

    I use wicking pots for my ferns. In the U.S. a lot of the small Exotic Angel plants are sold at Lowe's in wicking pots. I just kept them in those pots and put that pot inside a glass or clear plastic vessel that was deep enough to retain about 1" of water but the bottom of the pot doesn't sit in the water. It has been the only way I have been able to grow ferns successfully. I just transferred my syngonium rayii to a setup like this as well because that plant seems to react poorly to inconsistent watering. It throws a fit immediately. I like the reservoir to be transparent so I can see the water level so I know when to add water and it's pretty easy to find glasses or vases at thrift stores that work for that. I did just purchase one with one of those red level indicators from Amazon and I'm anxious to try it out!

    T4U are the best inexpensive 'self watering pot for my needs, maybe has a lot to do with
    the string wicking action and not actually sitting in the water as some pot feature . . .
    I saw a poly alocasia sale at WF market and picked one up. 7.99$ cheap enough not to feel the heavy finanical loss should they die. Anyway was never ever able to keep the alocasia alive in the past. So i placed the alocasia in the PON and this T4U 6" pot and a month latter they are not only still alive but flourishing and I will never turn back. Now with this new confidence i've went ahead a purchased the tigrina starter (must order 2 requirement off of esty) and again they are thriveing. Please excuse my spelling. . . .
    yeah these cheap costing pots a the real cheap deal - game changer for those not so green thumber.

    You can always just buy the inserts from a hydroponics store and use any ceramic or plastic pot without a drainage hole of the appropriate size to make your own custom self-watering system. I'd left the comment after watching Friends video that you do not always have to keep water in the reservoir depending on the plant, so I think your idea of letting certain plants dry out a bit before refilling is a good idea . that's what I do with mine

    Hi Jeff, thanks for the update to these self watering pots, I am trying the kind that doesn’t have the string but has plastic tubes that contact the water in the cache pot section of the pot. So far, so good for a senecio macroglosis and a callisia gentlei var. “elegant”. Surprised at the senecio but mine would tend to dry out quickly and i was always cutting it off and re-rooting in water and restarting it over and over. The self watering pot seems to be the trick with it. I’m experimenting with length of time letting the pot go dry. I let mine go dry before adding more water to the base. My pots are square plastic, black inside white outside so slightly “modern” look, but bought them as an experiment before putting more money into nicer ones. Good luck with yours!

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think I would buy these exact ones again, as they are pretty cheap and not that modern lol. There is another company Elho that makes self watering inserts that I would really like to try. Thanks for watching my video!

    I make wicks for a lot of my plants, especially my seedlings. If you feel the plant is getting too much water you can control how much water the plant gets by controlling the wick = cut the wick )less wick = less wate), maybe only have one end submerged.
    For my new babies I run my wicks up in the soil away from the stem for even moisture. My pots sit on a bakers cooling rack (or comparable), rack holds the water and also adds moisture to the air.
    I bought a bolt of 1/8" diameter piping cord from a notions store (Joann's). All cotton is ng as it will rot but a poly or microfiber blend has worked very well for me.

    I got these a while back and have transferred only 1 fern so far, bc I've been a bit concerned that it stays quite moist on top. When I got into plants Spring 2019 I had literally 1,000 + fungus gnats, it was gross, but I fixed that. So, now I'm thinking of cutting the strings in half up to the pot & removing half (without removing the plant) so that it might take up less water. Seems like that might work? That's my idea anyway.

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats what I am watching for as well.....fungus gnats. I will be living the reservoir dry for a few days so it gives a chance for the soil to dry up a bit as well.
