My Fave bass players are, Colin Moulding of XTC, for his ability to play any kind of music.
JJ Burnel , The Stranglers, and the late great Mick karn of Japan . Knoweone made the frettless sound as good as Mick.

So many awesome bass players too choose from!
James Jamerson, Duck Dunn, Nathan East, all the classic greats, you know.
But entering a dark horse here: I think Sting's playing is underrated.
With its reggae influences, musicality and combined with singing it's something I have a newfound deep respect for since picking up the bass.
Oh, and let's not forget about Tina Weymouth.

Way before your time James but the what you describe is being used here but just using one approach note instead of two but as a part chord. This is the classic disco track from 1975 which features the open shut hi hat and the octave jumping bass once the tempo picks up. I had only been playing bass for a few months and tried to copy the octave jumping. No youtube at the time so I used thumb for the bottom notes and middle finger for the upper octave. th-cam.com/video/yOzO_4NS8NI/w-d-xo.html
