    I've watched this 12 part documentary at least 4 or 5 times. And this is the very first time
    I can feel the frustration the U.S. troops must have felt fighting ghosts. And I can understand
    not trusting any civilian. I'm so very thankful I didn't have to fight in this war!
    But on a lighter note I freaking love the music…I never get tired of it!

    Best documentary ever, no preaching or pushing a narrative or virtue signaling about the horrors. Just facts. If I'm watching a documentary like this I don't care what the hosts personal opinions about the subject are.

    I first watched this in the very late 1990's, around 1999 on PBS, channel 8 in Phoenix, AZ. It was the first time I had seen an explanation of how we got there and why things went the way they did. They were 2 hour episodes on Friday night back then, 6 weeks in total. It was captivating to see it for the first time. You are either all the way in or you need get all the way out when it comes to war. I was convinced after watching it back then, we never truly understood what we were dealing with, from the time just after WW2 to the end in 1975.

    • @EamonnSeoigh

      Actually, the Communist Chinese agenda was served. Vietnam was just another domino for the control of the South China Seas. Turmoil and death will continue in various other forms but we just won't get to read about it.

    • @Conn30Mtenor
      @Conn30Mtenor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@EamonnSeoigh except that only Laos and Cambodia went Communist. The domino theory proved to be rubbish. The Vietnamese were Communist with a small "c". They were Vietnamese first, communist second. The have had a historical hatred for China (and still do). The went to war with China shortly after the Vietnamese reunification went ahead. Look at what kind of country Vietnam is now- they are allies in the struggle against China.

    You can’t have a Vietnam documentary video without a massive argument in the comments. However, you can’t argue with the fact that Vietnam was a lost war from the start. The only way the US could’ve won is if they used nuclear weapons but China and Russia would’ve retaliated and WW3 would’ve started.

      @@CigarRegal Yup, in America we are told we did not do an extensive bombing campaign, but we did. It's just that we were bombing structures, and structures were really cheap, even minimalist. They were so resourceful it doesn't matter how many bombs the US dropped in North or South Vietnam, they wouldn't give up. It is admirable. I would expect that of any people bound by a tongue and culture, when a new foreign culture steps in when you were just getting used to the Franco-Viet slang.
      Another American secret: The US was disposing of tons of old WW II and Koren War bombs. It was cheaper to just drop them over Vietnam than to dispose of them properly in the States. Another thing they never teach in school.

    Excellent documentary series, but the soundtrack is far too repetitive and quickly becomes boring. Also, the chronology of events often uses filmed sequences already seen 4 or 5 times, which weighs down the narration. The text follows the events, but the images do not always match what is said. Nevertheless, it is a documented history without qualms.

    Really? Wasnt along Ho Chi Min trail a single spot clear by any coverings? Like an bridge on a clear flat ground with no trees and bushes. If was not a single one, than made one! And make it a permanent checking point with artillery and machine guns, despite was in Cambodgia. So what? Send mercenaries there from neutral countries, americans under cover, all possible stuff u can get plus an airfield near the border, inside Vietnam for firepower support.
    I bet the long desired huge battle would take place exactly there, in Cambodgia, defending a checking point.
    Presumptions only, i know...

    • @segarcea4106
      @segarcea4106 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1) The Ho Chi Minh trail was not a single road. If one bridge was blown or a road blocked, the VietCong would simply use a trail in the Jungle 3 km east or west. 2) Because there was a jungle it was almost impossible to see human movement. See how hard it was for US forces against the talibans jn the mountains. 3) There were millions of VietCong & North Vietnamese fighters against half a million americans and south vietnamese demoralized soldiers. even if for every 9 killed NV guerillas 1 american would be killed, North Vietnam would still send resources along with China and would last longer than the US would.
      In short: It was a losing war from the start

      Towards the end of the conflict when Nixon became president the US started to attack Cambodia and parts of the Ho Chi Min trail including the staging areas leading to South Vietnam, It was a limited effort thought because officialy the US army isn't permitted to be there . The ARVN (South vietnamese army) launched operation lam son 719 that directly attacked Loas and the staging areas, the US supported the ARVN as much as they could without entering Loas, the operation turned into a disaster.
