Thanks so much for making this video! I’m new to this, don’t know anything about mics, decided to launch a podcast and ordered the equipment. 2 mics from eBay both allegedly new. I immediately spotted tiny differences, first one being the R next to the Shure writing at the back of the mic. Then I saw the difference in mic cover material and cut shape. Yeah. Wish me luck in getting the fake one back to the owner!

That humming can be easily fixed it's probably just because they don't have the cable properly insulated you need to pick up a ferrite choke that can help and I think there may be a ground Loop problem with this microphone easily fixable with small amount of EQ you should be able to get it the sound quite similar to the original the original does have a more warm open feeling in my opinion but there's ways to get around that all that aside this is a good little clone at least with body structure swap the capsule on it and it might just be usable

i have to check like 4 of theese vids to make sure mine is original,
here is what i found that easy to tell.
    1. the capsule is around in the middle
    2. the back logo is clear
    3. the made in is not in reverse,
    4. the seal before you open the box oftentime in 3 language jappanese, chinese, and german, the fake one in spain only
    5. the plate cover in the back that you get additionaly in the box have silver mark on the hole not all black
    6. the weight is around 830g, mine is 844g
    7. the spinning thing for the stand connector is metal
    8. the xlr connector should be easy to plug
    9. the cable is firm & the thing that attached to the end cable should not be able to get off
    10. well the sound should not be any hiss in it if phantom power is on.
    thanks man

It’s funny because someone sold me a genuine SM7B on Facebook marketplace for $170. They were probably looking at all the counterfeit eBay listings and thought that it now goes for that value. I initially thought it was a fake but opened it up and it had genuine wiring and tolerances. Funny how this all works 😂

  • @flexnix
    @flexnix 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

6:34 - Foam Filter - Taller and different shape
    6:52 - Cable - Thinner
7:10 - Yoke Hinge - Swings too easily
7:38 - Screw Cap - Made out of plastic
8:17 - The capsule on the mic sits higher, thus closer to the windscreen grill.
Another difference with the fake are the small rubber grommets on the wire. The fake's grommet stick out further. The real SM7B are more flat looking.

I discovered the fake has thicker plastic white washers that don;t clamp as well as the real ones, which when screwed up show far less of the compression washers than the fake one - so in your video at that point, the thicker washers are on the left one? My real one tightens up solidly, the copy doesn't = but my fake looks like your real one at this point in the video!

Ok if your thinking about buying an SM7B from the Amazon site be very careful, I went ahead, made the purchase and was bitterly disappointed. I clicked and purchased from the main listing which turns out to be a third party seller. Luckily I already had a legitimate SM7B to compare the two when it arrived as I probably would have been none the wiser until it was to late due to it being a good forgery to the untrained eye.. I sent a list of all the anomalies backed up with photos to Amazon and they refunded me immediately however the seller in question is still listed and selling. The listing is at almost 7000 sold and 5 stars. Lord only knows how many unsuspecting victims have been duped and how many fakes are circulating.. For the record the anomalies with my fake were
      1. It had a registered trademark symbol on the rear (I’ve noticed many with this on the second hand market) My legitimate mic does NOT have this.
      2. The paint finish inside the thread that connects to the stand was poor and lacking black paint which shows raw aluminium.
      3. The foam pop filter was longer than the original, of poorer quality and was too tight as it caught on the metal basket when sliding it on and off.
      4. The filters/ waveguide selectors on the rear were very difficult (stiff) to engage and didn’t do anything when they were engaged.
      5. The capsule was poorly suspended/isolated and was flopping around considerably.
      6. The box had thin plastic film covering it which was the first giveaway as my legitimate mic never came with this. Upon opening the box there were quite a lot of cardboard fibres spread throughout whereas my og mic was immaculate throughout the box. Etc etc etc
From someone who has “been there done that” don’t try and save a couple of dollars buying what is potentially going to be a dodgey pos, head to your local music store and show your support, it will give you piece of mind, support local jobs and keep your music/audio store trading into the future:)

@@davidhussey8730 Many legitimate SM7b's sold throughout 2000-2009 had the rear trademark symbol on the back switch plate to the upper right of the SHURE logo to match branding from that retail era. They were also sold through Musicians Friend and Guitar Center, and others at the same time as "White Box" retail packages that didn't include the outer retail sleeve you see today but still had the identical styrofoam insides with the 'SHURE' stamped styrofoam inserts. There were also label changes over the years as well, the last one in 2021 that added the Russia, China RoHS UK Compliance symbols that added length to the overall label that can confuse people.

I like how people are saying counterfeit lol Shure does not make any of the components they don't even assemble those parts here in the USA. Basically what you want is the internals of the SM7B without all the name crap on it. There is nothing illegal about selling the SM7B with the exact internals but without any Shure logos or names on them Mic. Again I repeat this will make the Mic as a non branded item which copy right laws have trouble going against. The real question is what is the OEM cost of the SM7B? Yes it's downright criminal. Look at the OEM of a Red Dragon Camera and you will ask why the people at RED have not been arrested for RICO laws lol.

You can get rid of any buzz by recording it (only the buzz) to a separate channel, reverse the phase and level up until it cancels itself out. You might have to time align. Not useful for this knockoff, but very handy for noisy guitar amps. In analog times where we didn't have the luxury of endless channels, we'd split the signal, compress the hell out of it (DBX 160A), phase reverse it and bring back in. Not perfect as the DAW solution but better than buzz.

I bought a fake one believing it was genuine off of ebay. Luckily I'll get a full refund for it. Another telltale sign is that the cord on the sm7b itself (not the xlr cable), will fall out on some of the fakes as was the case with mine. This should never happen with a genuine sm7b - especially not during the "unboxing" as mine did.

Heh. The counterfeit lacks a llllot of high frequency detail that the original has. 😅 Even with noise gate on, its self noise is so apparent. 😅😅😅
No one has ever tackled on this SM7B counterfeit. Thank you so much for finally making this. 🙂

I'll have to listen to the 1/2 comparison again. I didn't notice any buzz. Lol.
What I did notice was that the fake (and I won't say which one, in case it's a spoiler) sounded muddy to me. The real one sounded brighter and crisper, which isn't necessarily what I was expecting, as the real one is supposed to be deeper and bassier....right?
Either way, I liked the sound of the real one better.
Anyway, the build quality of the fake is ridiculous. I don't want my XLR cable to be nearly impossible to plug in, and even harder to remove! I don't want the yolk to be flimsy. I don't want a lightweight microphone.
I don't want to support counterfeiters!
I'm seeing so many of these on eBay. "Open Box" for $160. All manner of SM7b's for less than $200. Screams fake!
No. I'd get mine from Sweetwater or Guitar Center or somewhere that I'd trust.

I was tricked by a fake version of this microphone being sold as the original here in Brazil. Lucky for me, I noticed that the microphone wire came inside the holder and also the sticker on the box came badly cut and with a low resolution. The pop filter is also slightly lighter than the original. I returned it right away and got an actual original. A lay person will never notice the difference.

  • @izzywalker471

A lot of the cheap SM7b's on ebay right now are counterfeit. Just received one today, very poor build quality but the look and shrink wrapped plastic and box were so close to the legit thing that you couldn't tell without opening, and handling the mic. metal grill busted right off when I pulled off the filter, two welds were crap. Same color differences, they are now making the external cable slightly closer to the original but still thinner. The weight difference if you have ever held the real thing is also a give away. Look for the stated telltale loose swivel adjustor and tighter than real mic stand mount.

The counterfeit Shure's almost definitely come out of the same factory, that's why all the packaging is the same. My best guess is that they are the models rejected by QA, end up getting packaged and sold on Chinese websites anyway.

  • @Aleziss
    @Aleziss ปีที่แล้ว

that sucks because they are TRYING to make you beleive you are buying a genuine shure product and for the non tech, they can easily buy that crap... there is also differences in the printing of the box vs the original box, try to compare both box and you will find differences.

I bought one recently as I was curious but made the mistake of not watching any reviews. Checking the capsule on mine it is recessed the same as the original in your video and the cable doesn't go through the cradle connection. Funnily enough I just noticed at 5:20 you labeled the fake one as real as you can see the cable going through it rather than around it. I don't have an original to compare to but its safe to say that the fakes are not all consistent in quality. To me it doesn't have that hiss or sound overly bad but I would be curious to compare mine to a real one. Maybe they have improved the quality of the fakes or you just got an especially bad one.

I think that I bought a second hand SM7B but instead of being a real one is probably a counterfeit. (I realized that too late unfortunately and I cannot cancel the order), Now I'm waiting for the package to be delievered so I can report the thing (the microphone is technically covered by eBay buyer protection and PayPal buyer protection). How can I demonstrate that my mic is a clone and not the real one? (I was not aware of this big scam market until seeing this video randomly on my TH-cam main page).
Somebody has some measurement done about the mic? (Like frequency response, how many centimeters the capsule is off, or the sponge is longer, etc..)

Thanks for that video! And thanks for warning potential buyers on what they get, if they pay the money for this. Ugh... I don't want it! Not at all! But here you go! I support you with some more than usual, to at least partially compensate for the money you had to spend to do this. And I can imagine, how you feel, to want this microphone out of your house! But that being said, i don't think its a good idea to even consider giving this away. My god... with the buzz, a loose capsule and whatnot... I'm ready to believe, this microphone could be a hazard to your other equipment. This microphone is horrible! And the Booth Junkie back when did made it clear, what to do with counterfeits. Trash em. Throw them away! Tho the trashcan will be insulted, to house such a thing, it at least cannot complain.

    • @MichaelW.1980
      @MichaelW.1980 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As far as the explanation about the original SM7B itself goes, I'd like to suggest a few changes to the wording: Not the Same Capsule, but the same Capsule DESIGN can be found in the SM58 and SM57. It is an important differentiation to make, because that's parts why the SM7B sounds different to the latter two. Another part of it is the fact, that both, the SM58 and SM57 come with transformers, to make the those microphones a little bit easier to drive. (Output on the SM57 and SM58 is -56dBV, on the SM7B it's -59dBV) This transformer is another part of what makes the SM7B sound slightly different of the SM57 and SM58. The last thing would be the obvious thing one can see just by looking at the microphone. The SM7B has a much bigger - in lack of a better word, given there are the electronics inside of any microphone - bassreflex chamber, which makes it's bass response go farther down than the SM57 and SM58 ever could.

I got quite satisfied with an original non-bootleg mic from there, $20, golden grille and pink chassis, AA battery in the core for power, remarkably well-tuned for beatboxing with windscreen foam on top of it. A full on twenty. Serious weight, metal top and bottom, could use it in self defense.

Microphone number 2 sounds bad to me. Too bassy and not enough detail. Number 1 is not good either to be honest. People fetishize the radio deep voice thing way too much, when in vocals the higher end detail is often where a lot of the interest that lies in the human voice is located.
