- GERMANY: The series of storms continues! Heavy damage caused by thunderstorms, hail and flooding
Storms have hit large parts of Germany and caused numerous fire service operations and traffic disruptions. The train line between Bremen and Hamburg was closed on Thursday evening due to a washout near Tostedt in Lower Saxony. It is still unclear how long the line will remain closed. Long-distance trains are currently being diverted via Hanover, while Metronom regional trains are cancelled.
In Dresden, two employees were injured and taken to hospital after a lightning strike struck a supermarket. The lightning strike caused a defect in a cooling system and spread a chemical smell throughout the supermarket. In Detmold, North Rhine-Westphalia, a storm caused up to 100 liters of rain per square meter to fall within a short period of time. Federal Highway 239 was flooded over a length of two kilometers and the fire brigade had to respond to 150 calls, including pumping out cellars.
In Thuringia, too, a severe thunderstorm kept the fire brigade busy. Federal Highway 281 near Neuhaus was closed due to flooding, and cellars in Gerthausen had to be pumped out. A lightning strike in Ilmenau caused considerable damage to a semi-detached house.
In Hesse, there were also numerous operations due to flooded cellars and flooded streets. In Hamburg, heavy rainfall led to over 700 operations. Streets were flooded, cellars and shops were flooded, and many trees were uprooted. Part of the roof of an apartment building was blown off.
In Baden-Württemberg, several railway lines were closed, including the section between Herbertingen and Aulendorf and between Crailsheim and Schwäbisch Hall-Hessental due to fallen trees. The Stuttgart S-Bahn reported restrictions between Rohr and Böblingen and an overhead line fault between Grunbach and Schorndorf.
