Should we seal again and if so should we be more careful and only put the seal on the natural stone? The grout bag says no need to seal so we don’t want to mess the grout up. If you sealed before had then there is no need to seal afterwards. The Mapei Ultra Color FA, which is my favorite grout by the way, doesn't need to be sealed. If it is a very porous stone it needs to he sealed twice a year. If not, just once a year. You can use the sealer over the grout. Hope that helped Jessica. Sealers are just thin layers of protection. If you're using the shower daily, there is no sealer that lasts longer. It all depends on the type of stone and how porous it is. Honestly, natural stone on a shower floor is a very bad idea. So know, it's a pain in the but, add your discovering even before install. So why now choose something else. They have so many options of porcelain tile that mimics natural stone without all the maintenence.

You want to seal them first unless you can avoid staining them during install. Unfortunately being that it is a shower and your washing dirt off, eventually the stain sealer will fade and discoloration will happen. Especially with light colored stone and grout.

Hey Char. Unfortunately, since they were not sealed, the stone is not stained and it won't be fixed. If it only happens when dry you could buy a wet look sealer and try to see if it hides the haze. This is all I can suggest. Try this on a small area with the "wet look" sealer and see if it works. Hope that helps and have a great day.

Question: I just got installed pebble stones in the shower floor and niche and the guy put charcoal grout over them discoloring the stones (originally white, light grey and some dark grey). Obviously it’s totally different then what I expected, is there a way to fix the problem? I bought the aqua mix heavy duty tile and grout cleaner but not seeing results…….also been thinking to redo the floor again…..what’s your thoughts…..thank you very much in advance

Well at this point the water has gotten into the pan. It depends on how the person who did it pitched the pan. I do a pitch under the liner so if water gets under there it still finds its way to the drain. If not the water sits there and starts to smell after some time. You could seal it now if there are no issues.

I cleaned it with vinegar and dawn and dried it really well, but after about 5 days of not using the shower it still looks like the grout is wet in some areas. I put a fan on and was hoping it would dry it out completely so I can apply a sealer on the stones. What do you recommend? Thank you so much!

Not the point of your video but how do you deal with clean up after? I noticed you had extra in your can after you finished, what do you do with that excess? Can't pour back into the container, correct? And do you have to toss the sponges used? Thanks
Hello Ben, after you sealed the river rocks you said to wait one day/72 hours before grouting - did you mean to wait one day or 3 days before grouting?
This video is old af. I've changed many processes. Including sealing before install, not after. Yes, I also use a cut up sponge now. It tends to make the sealer foamy when applying, but you just have to be careful.
Its very common for people who do this to be not fully qualified to do the work correctly. They may think they know but lack of knowledge makes them think its OK. Some river rocks require sealing before grouting.
Aren't you suppose to seal the stone before thin setting the stones in place. You are are not only sealing the stones but also the thin set. The grout needs to bond to the thin set?

Always test the sealer beforehand on a spot maybe not on the area but of the material separated. I use impregnater by Building Customs.

You can get a color stain in the preferred color for grout. They sell it at Lowes. Its in the grout section. Ask employee.

Once sealed you cannot remove it. Stained within the stone. In hindsight you should have checked a few stones to see what the finish looks like. Z

The rocks still need to be sealed. The grout has nothing to do with the sealing of the stones. You can seal over the grout with sealer in it.

Grout doesn't bond to anything. Its cement. Its just fills in the joints. Yes, you can seal the stones beforehand.
