I finished this game a few minutes ago, before watching this video.. Spiritfare actually made me reprocess the death of my father (that happened one year ago) in a very beautiful way. I always avoided thinking about what happened because it hurts to remember, but this game actually allow me think of it in a way that doesn't hurt anymore. . it's such a simple game but it connected to me in a deep way. That's was beautiful.

And by the way, the game is very simple and repetitive, and it gets boring easily, but it was the kind of game I needed to play at this point.

One thing I think is worth mentioning is that there are (if I'm remembering right) eleven spirits, but you get the quest to take Stella and Daffodil to the Everdoor after eight spirits pass through it. I remember my first time playing this game, I wanted to make sure *everything* was in order before I took Stella and Daffodil. Almost like I wasn't ready to accept it. But that quest was always there, looming over me. Inevitable, like death itself. It's a very subtle way to get the message across that death is a part of us. That it's not something you can avoid. At least, not forever. So once I got all my quests done, I made sure I had no more tasks being done (like in the mill or food being cooked), gave all my memories one last hug, asked Buck to take care of the boat, and bawled my eyes out when Stella and Daffodil finally allowed themselves to rest. It still gets me bawling every time.
I do struggle with the concept of death, but this game has helped with that a lot. I know it won't get easier for a while, since I'm still in my 20s, but I think I'm better equipped for it later in life because of this game.
Thank you for the fantastic video on this beautiful piece of art!

I played through this game shortly before my best friend unexpectedly passed away at age 21, and having played this game has helped me tremendously throughout the grieving process. It has enabled me to let go of him in a way that I wouldn't have been able to before I played this game. This game is single handedly responsible for changing my outlook on death in a positive way. Everything comes to an end.

Something that I noticed while playing the game is that some of the islands in-game either share their names with, or have names resembling places mentioned in Stella’s past, further proving it all takes place in Stella’s head.

Criminally under-viewed video. I worked in cancer and dementia wards during covid when I played this and the game keeps coming back to me. That’s for discussing it in a really fitting and succinct way. (Only gripe is you didn’t mention best boi Alex and their wonderful tunes.)

Taking Stella and Dafodill to the everdoor is basically like saying goodbye to the game as you would have finished it after. And so it took me months to pick the game back up and finish it as i didn't want it to end. But i loved every single moment of this game and i love all the characters so much!🥺🥺

    • @maximumbeans9310
      @maximumbeans9310 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

You’re so right. I noticed that as I was playing through the game I was slowing down and finding reasons to delay the ending. It really does make you dread saying goodbye because you know what’s coming and you want to save Stella just that bit longer. But therein lies the truth: death can’t be avoided. As Summer says, all things end.

i played this game one day blind. I was never really into the farming and managment style of games, i'm mostly a technical gamer who plays games like factorio, from the depths or cosmoteer. I decided to branch out and play a game a little bit out of my standard genres.
A friend of mine told me to try it on my PC cause I had a cruddy little laptop at the moment and it was the only thing that it could run on. I never really read the store page of indie games on steam, I just mostly look at the genre and say "That seems like a good fit for me" and buy it.
    I was not expecting this
The beutifully somber setting. The art style, cozy and beautiful. The environment dripping with delicate care. And the music is beyond words.
I got sucked into the story immediately. I was managing the crops to maximize the amount of things I could sell, I started playing like a technical player at first, but at some point i stopped myself because i realized i was making the people unhappy by negleticting their well being, so i focused more on that, slowed down what i was doing and stopped trying to rush to the end.
I feel that's a pretty good metaphor for how i started to see this game as a mirror of my life. I was so worried in my life for getting money and trying to set thing up for the future and make sure my life was going to be absoloutly set up, that i forgot something.
I forgot that my life isn't in the future.
    It's now
And that was the first thing this game made me realize. I don't need to rush through and min max everything. Sometimes you just need to sit down and just look around. Just feel your life. Live it.
There is so much more that iwant to talk about this game, but it would be a whole book.
All i gotta say is this game is important enough to me that i'm going to get stella, daffodil, and all the spirit flowers tattooed on my leg

i had bought this game a month ago and am slowly playing it, mostly because letting the characters go would make me cry for hours and i would be so tired. It’s helped me realize things about loss and how i’ve handled it and who i’ve lost. I am nearing the end, wanting to complete all the quests and things for everyone here, but i feel that i won’t be ready to let Stella go even when she’s ready. But this commentary really made me see it all completely and i am back to crying but it’s so worth it 😭😭

This game was one if few that made me cry. It reminded me of my pappy who passed away, doing Alice quest... it actually helped me through that grief somehow..? Idk. The game somehow helps you through that and understand it is a part of life. It shows everyone has to let go and Understand everyone will go at some point. One thing I adore about Spiritfarer is its depiction of Hades. To my knowledge, Hades is never depicted as something other than a discount Satan, which is unfair because that's distinctly not what he is. He embodies death and the underworld as a whole, but Hades cannot be evil because he appropriately cares for and houses every single soul, good bad and ugly. His design in Spiritfarer feels much less like he's a dickwad imprisoned by Zeus and more like a neutral being who is larger than life and knows you're afraid of it, for good reason. Much more of "stand in awe, you will never hold a candle to my power" and far less of "I'm a grumpy old dude who punishes bad people." Which I welcome wholeheartedly.
Game could have done with an ability to automate some things, though. At least far earlier than you're able to. Spiritfarer's one of those games that markets itself as a cozy, casual farming/management game but once you're in the thick of it, you're up to your teeth in things to do. I sat there wishing I had another set of hands doing things for me cause you've got to feed everybody different things, hug them, smelt ores, make fabric, water crops, harvest crops, forge metal sheets, manage where your ship is headed, cook food and fish. I know otherwise you'd have fuck all to do when your ship is moving across the map, but it really can get hectic at times, more than it feels right for this game.

i had my eye on it for a while but the game actually released at a really shit point in my life and 2 days after i had to put the family pet i had moved out with to sleep. i played it like a distraut maniac for nearly 3 solid weeks, and yeah i cried a lot when i finished it and yeah that whole period still hurts to think about, but i was a lot better off for this game giving me a chance to think it over.
had a shit time lately, faced up to it and replayed the last few weeks to see the DLC content .. finished last night crying and holding onto my now two year old cat, and the catharsis is back too
great breakdown and commentary, and does justice to what it set out for c:

Thank you so much for this amazing video. I bought the game, because I liked the cover and text on the back.
When my boyfriend showed me a video about it we were like... nahhh this doesn't look fun, but you're explaining made me love the game before I even tried it!

I completed spiritfarer just a few days ago and ive been hoping that their world lives on after stella passes, since well it was like everyone's end just rowing to the everdoor closing her book. I cant help but think about her boat, I wonder if the next spiritfarer will use it

ah yeah, would have been nice if we saw the role of Spiritfarer being passed on to the next soul (could have hinted at a sequel, too!)

I had PTSD after playing Ori and the Blind Forest, then got hit with this game. I kinda disagree with you though about Stella's trip through the Everdoor being less impactful because of the lack of dialogue. It actually felt very real to be quietly paddling along to the Everdoor because there was no one left to talk to; she was all alone. No one to express philosophy about life, regrets, etc. Just silently knowing it was time, giving your kitty one last hug, then going through the Everdoor.

A suggestion I have on a VERY good game that came out. I think you should tackle OMORI. It’s a psychological horror game that will definitely give you your money’s worth in one hell of an emotional experience (I will warn you there are multiple endings)

I don't get how this game is about death, or why the spirits are upset or sad. They're alive and immortal. This is a game about immortality.

interesting take, I hadn't thought about it like that. I see the spirit forms existing in more of a limbo state, until they pass on 'for good' through the everdoor. But immortality would definitely make the goodbyes easier to handle 😛

I think the entire world of Spiritfarer is actually a world of memories and thoughts created by Stella's mind. She is afraid of death, and the only thing she can do is to remember the people that she loved and died before her, because the memories of their death help her to not fear her own death.
