I have become obsessed with putting in a water feature in my back yard. want a natural stream flowing thru yard, which has just a slight incline. THIS is it. what I want. I can't tell you how many videos I have watched on ponds, waterfalls, and streams. Ilove your approach. I feel relieved by your approach- to go/ do/ set/ plant/ walk away. come back. adjust, add, subtract to just right. I'm wanting to recreate a walk in the woods and have let my urban yard grow a bit, to see what plants want to come up naturally, gently modifying and letting things be. I use a weed eater with a short line to trim, so I can see what flowers and plants want to be there but have been killed off in the past. It's been so rewarding. Now I'm ready for my babbling brook. thank you thank you. subscribed :)
Fantastic stream! Thank you for the chronological perspective. It really helps to see how this project evolved over time, which is pretty much how a garden hobbiest like myself does things.
No problem, thanks for watching! It should always be about see what works and tweaking the plan as you go. And dont forget to enjoy yourself 😃 Good luck with your project 😃
What a great relaxing voice this man has which makes the video even more nice....he also has a great way of explaining it...and it's a great video..brilliant result..thank you.. Will look for any videos you make...wish you was a new reader .with that voice
I remember this guy. As his back garden was on a hill and water was coming out of the ground at the top of his garden. . Because it was there for a couple of years, he thought he had an underground spring. He decided to build a big water feature out of cement. Couple of ponds, running streams and water falls. No sooner he built it. The water board came along and mended the broken underground pipe 😂😂 it turned out not to be a spring
What a great video! Well done you. The stream looks amazing, you've transformed a small humble garden into a beautiful and enchanting space. I love it! One question, I'm assuming your pump was electric. I don't have electricity in the garden, do you think it would be possible to use a smart solar pump? And could you advise where to get one powerful enough.. Thanks ..
Very good. I did something similar in 2019 and like you, I found that the birds were into it straight away. On hot days, it's great to watch them splashing about. I find the birds needs shallow water to bathe in, so I had to add pebbles rather than remove them.
Thankyou for some great advice. We have just completed the the basics of our pond & stream & although it maybe twice the length of yours I'm surprised you do not have a UV light! We have a Powerful pump (16000 LPH) & a UV light that can cope with that. Thanks again for the tip on Concrete, that may be the next job. Wishing you all the best....
That’s what I tend to do. Create something as a starter. Stand back with a cup of tea. Look at it again and improve on the first one. Stand back again, have another cup of tea. Look at the project again and modify on it. I find this is the best way for me. But then I’m back and fore to the toilet 😂😅. Like the video 👍👍👍
This is a great video! Just what I was looking for :) I suddenly got the idea of a tiny stream somewhere and wanted to check some videos for inspiration. Thanks!
Another great video Craig, thank you for this 🙂 . I remember way back when you first created your stream and very much want to build one myself so appreciate all the detailed advice in your video. Just need to work out now how I can squeeze one into my patch, it is going to be a challenge!!!
I have had to make mine lower , as the pump would run dry in the warmer weather. Just finnishd digginng out a larger hole for the pump to help retain more water when it drains drains back after I turn it off. Also linned it with concreat for safety. Waiting to swich back on again.!!!
Thanks for sharing this! I'm looking into building something similar for my front yard, and you did an amazing job here. How deep would you guess the stream became after you removed the pebbles? I live in an area of the U.S. that has a climate fairly similar to where you are (I'm guessing), so just wondering how deep I should make it to avoid evaporation during the summer months.
lovely stream, and so nice to see one made outside of USA - i love the American ones, but they are often too big for tiny UK gardens! Would be good to see a diagram (or description) of the dimensions/levels - esp how much did each level drop down from the one before?
Hey man. Great build. Out of curiosity, did you tussle with the idea of adding a filter to the pump system? Or is one already in place to keep algae etc down? Were there any issues getting the concrete to adhere to the liner?
Congratulations on a beautiful garden. I've been hunting around for exactly this type of look. Is the pump simply left on the bottom of the lower pool and then covered with stones. The pool doesn"t look very deep. Is it not necessary to put in some sort of filter? How long is your stream? I want to put in one that is about 4ms long. Do you think that pump is strong enough?
Hello! Our stream is about 3m long. The pump is just in the bottom pool and that works for us. We don't have a filter at the moment and the stream has been fine so far 🙂👍🌿🌴🌱 I hope that helps, thanks for watching!
Beautiful stream and great advice. How much does it cost to run the pump on a yearly or monthly basis? Did you notice a big increase in your electric bill? Thanks.
Thanks for your kind words. We bought one of the most energy efficient ones on the market because we were worried about running costs. It has been great, we barely see a difference 🙂🌿
Me too. It's what I'm doing now. My first pond is up and running. I made mistakes which I'll learn from. The wildlife, especially the birds absolutely love it.
Excellent advice. I am looking to change my 'dry bed' feature into an actual 'stream' feature. It is away from a power supply. Would there be a suitable non-mains pump available?
Hello, thank you for the great video. I LOVE all your plants. Would you happen to know the name of some of them? I wish I could figure out how to add a picture as I've circled the ones I'm interested in.
What a great project , very clear and detailed information too . I thought that I couldn't have a stream because I have a dog ...now I see that it could be possible . What pump did you use etc ? ..many thanks 😊😊😊
Could you give me some information about the concrete? Like which brand? strength? how much water in the mix? how thick is it laid in? do you lay in bottom then sides? how long to let it dry? do it have any reinforcement? etcetera? It's exactly what I'd like to have. Thanks much!!!
I would also love to hear your recommendations about the concrete - was it "watertight concrete", or did you add anything to make it non-porous? Did you have to paint a coating on it? Beautiful result!
Thanks for the video, very informative and great that you costed parts, want to make one a little wider but about same length ,would you recommend bigger pump or is this ok ?
I thought I had a leak in my self made waterfall stream i made. Now im thinking the stream part was just too shallwo thanks! I was topping it off daily
Hi Craig, Ive been following your videos for a long time now, and seen how it has changed. Its looking great, but I have a question - why do you keep the small strip of grass? Why not add gravel and more stone? Seems like a lot of maintenance for such a small patch of grass!
Hello, we keep the grass as we are hoping to get a dog in the future and we'd want them to have some open grassy areas to enjoy. I also like the look of a green open area 😁🌱🌿🌴 thanks for watching
Great video, planning to build a small stream for the fernery we are building (although in the hot Aussie temps we have here, I want water evaporation to maintain humidity lol). I had a question, whats is your overall fall from the top to bottom? I guess the old mathematics rise over run.
Oooh we'd love to see some pictures of your fernery at some point 🙂👍 there is no more than 30cm between the top and bottom height of our stream, our garden is very flat so we just had to dig each pool slightly deeper. I hope that helps 👍
@@GrowParadise At the moment it's a sandy mess just getting cleaned up. Nothing to see yet I am afraid. Also that drop wasn't as much as I thought and still gave a nice flow. Very close to what I kinda wanted to achieve. Thanks, man, your video has given us ideas.

what a beautiful garden and of course the water feature.
Thank you 🪴🙂
That is so impressive 👍 Great to see you don't need a huge garden to have a perfectly sized water feature. Does it take much maintainence?
When can I move in???😂 Just beautiful!

@@GrowParadise what is the area of that tropical garden?

It worked really well. 😀
Great your garden. Thank you!
Awesome, thanks for the tips
This is exactly what I have been looking for, thanks for the inspiration! How much height in cm’s does the stream drop from the beginning to the end?
It’s only a very small drop, no more than 15cm 👍
I liked it so much.can u guise me for my stream,I wanna build one in my garden

Thanks for sharing this! I'm looking into building something similar for my front yard, and you did an amazing job here. How deep would you guess the stream became after you removed the pebbles? I live in an area of the U.S. that has a climate fairly similar to where you are (I'm guessing), so just wondering how deep I should make it to avoid evaporation during the summer months.

What concrete mix did you go with?
Thanks in advance.
best stream tips!
I need to find out what pump and pipes to use.
The links are in the video description 👍
Absolutely brilliant. Is it on an incline or does the pump create the flow of water? 👍🏼🧑🏻🌾
Very slight incline but the pump does most of the work 👍
Did you put any chemicals or anything to stop algae growing or blanket weed? As I don’t see any

Possibly, I would look into solar pumps or something 😁
Do you leave the pump on throughout winter time. Great video. 👍
Yes I did 😁
Looks amazing. Do you have to replenish the water? Does it drain away or need to be topped up?
what tree is bottom left at 4.40 mimutes in ?
How did you add the thin layer of concrete? 12 midnight
Bucket and a trowel on a warm day. 😀
can you convert drainage or retention ditch in to a garden stream?
Thats a great idea, I've seen lots of 'Rain Gardens' on Google that use this idea 👍😀
Amazing job!! Do you have fish there?
Thanks! Nope, no fish on here. There were a couple of newts and lots of insects though 😃👍
So how deep and wide do you recommend? I was going to make mine just 18-24" wide x 6" deep. 🤷♀️. Mine will be pumped from and returning to a pond.
That sounds fine! It’s all preference I guess, I just found that the shallower it is the quicker it evaporated 🙂🌱
