  • Take a closer look at the materials and techniques used to create select works from the special exhibition "Dare to Know: Prints and Drawings in the Age of Enlightenment." Conservation experts and curators delicately outline the physical properties of the objects discussed and explain how their materiality brings the works to life. #daretoknow
In this installment, paper conservator Christina Taylor, deconstructs and demonstrates how Jean François Janinet created a print from a copper plate, and the central role the roulette tool played in the process. “The Virtue of Lucretia” is on view in the “Dare to Know” exhibition.

Wow! Thank you so much for making me aware of this. Previously I had thought of dot matrix printing as being a 20th century development and to discover it was an Age of Enlightenment technology (1789; 234 years ago!) is mind blowing to me. Also although I knew of etching I had never heard of the acid resist being called a ground. I had always known them as acid resist, but on Googling ground I discovered what was used in those long ago times and I wonder if some day I will try and make some as an experiment. Quite a change from the UV activated photo-polymers I have used in the past. Thank you so much for sharing this super interesting information and many other things that I have discovered from your clear, interesting and inspiring videos.
