I discuss my own life and my own perspective on her lyrics and the story of her life as presented here. I do that MORE than I discuss any music or guitar really, so fair warning. It's just what drew my attention.

Kanye was 32 Years old when he interrupted Taylor at the VMA, she was 19. Taylor is still a month shy of 32. Also, in the early 2020, the full 20+ Min video of the call between Kanye and Taylor swift leaked, proving she had been telling the truth the entire time, and Kanye and Kin had intentionally modified and edited the video.

I literally fastforward every time I watch the documentary. Can’t do it. The second hand embarrassment is too real.
For real. If my boyfriend took time out of the precious minutes I have with Taylor Fucking Swift, to propose to me I would be furious. Propose some other time, I’m sure she would have said yes. Hell, propose during the concert and tell Taylor later but don’t do it right there. Because you only have a few minutes to talk to her, the line has to keep going and I wanna get to at least take a picture with her and tell her how much I love her and her music.

Folklore and Evermore are proof that she's fallin out of the music industry "standards" and that she's not trying to please anyone other than herself by making records that she wanted to do for years.
Plus, I just wanna add that throughout her career we, the fans, have stuck around despite what the media did to her because we knew through her music that she's not the person they making her to be. It's so easy to fall for the media,hate an artist while knowing deep down that you probably don't know shit about anyone is for me so messed up and doesn't not excuse the behaviour. Throwing hate speech and cancelling an artist just for a rumour or a made up story is so immature and dangerous. We've seen what it did to musicians, and I hope next generations understand that.
Yep. Showed her that theres no point trying to live up to something, to be what you think people what you to be. She followed her bliss and look how well it worked out? 2 truly great albums where she collaborated with artists she loves.
Yeah. Apart from being so talented, her interaction with the fans is one of the reasons why i love her even more. Kind of like we are fans of her and she's a fan of us.

I think I saw this as I was like the same age is Taylor back in 2016/2017 there was just something about her that was different and her first album literally saved my life. And maybe I'm a tempest and maybe I'm very vulnerable but I get who she really is and that what people perceive her to be and that's why I stayed loyal to her and the music because it's very relatable soon as you see a cure about red and after all that you can literally feel all the emotions and all the vulnerability throughout her lyrics and it's so refreshing and exhilarating to hear that from someone that comes from my generation and words the same exact age and it's really for nominal just seeing someone you literally grew up to be such a legend

Most people don't realize that Taylor is actually the most successful indie artist, ever. She was the 1st & biggest artist on the independent label Big Machine, so there wasn't much money to promote her in the beginning but she blew up anyway! They say she is the music industry because she doesn't make music the way people are expected to, she always pushes herself, she's always tried to use her platform to help all musicians get treated more fairly, & especially since 2016, she just doesn't put up with BS anymore (thus, her taking control of her masters!) And no, what Kanye did & continued to do to Taylor didn't help her career. Her star was on the rise already, & her talent & work ethic got her to where she is. He just keeps using her for his own publicity.
Taylor admitted to feeling pressured to be the 'good girl'. She had a squeaky-clean image and parents would often comment to her at meet & greets that they were so happy that their kids had her as a role model. She couldn't mess up publicly because it would negatively affect her younger fans. As an example, underage drinking is fairly common at 19 or 20, but Taylor specifically said she didn't do that because parents were holding her up as an example to their kids. She felt it would be disingenuous to show up at an event with a hangover and have the parents praise her for being a role model for their kids.
It's amazing how poised and self-aware she was from such an early age.
14:00 yes, in fact, when people where doubting (after the launch of her second album) if she really was capable of writing all those songs, she tried to prove that by writing an entire album all by herself, always searching for that approval she talks about in the documentary. It took some time for her to realize there’s always going to be someone that doesn’t believe in you and it doesn’t matter what you do to prove them wrong, they just won’t believe you (specially being a woman living in such a sexist society as ours, although this happens to men too - but in a small scale of course)
Yes that was 12 string guitar in the clip of her playing at 13. She’s told the story before about asking her guitar teacher about 12 strings, he said her hands were too small to play a 12 string so she switched to learning on one to prove him wrong haha.

Wow, that was amazing! It feels so good to see a grown man be so aware of the struggles of young girls and women. Also you captured the part about children feeling responsible for their parents emotional state so well and clearly! I wish more people knew about this stuff, especially when interacting with children. Thank you so much!

No I agree, I also hope she starts to fall out of the negative spotlight and have more of a private life where she can be happy. After being a fan of Taylor since 2009, It’s clear she’s a kindhearted person and I stand by that. there’s no way for a person to keep up a fake façade for all these years. It’s just unfortunate that she fell into whatever the industry deemed as “perfect” which morphed a lot of people’s idea of what kind of person she is. No one is perfect but this industry doesn’t allow mistakes which makes it hard for someone like Taylor who wants to make everyone happy. I’m just happy to see that she seems to be breaking free from that. Wish her the absolute best. Can’t wait to see what she’ll be doing in like 10 years.
She underestimated herself sometimes, saying 2019 was her last opportunity to be successful. But look at her now still thriving and at the top of the game. She definitely still reigning the 2020s decade.
Also, now she’s in control more than she ever have before. She can drop music whenever she wants to, say and do as she wants.
She is humble human. Also insanely talented and smart. Folklore and Evermore are beyond words. I started becoming a fan during the Reputation. That era was magical. I wanted to hear her side of the story. When she deleted everything in her Instagram i started following her. I still can't believe the feeling when Look what you made me do came out.
I'm watching this now, after Midnights and the Eras tour has started. She's still got it, she will always have it.
That song at the end was 'The Archer' from Lover, by the way. Its really anxiety inducing and underrated, but probably my favourite song from the album and I'm glad you like it too!
I love how taylor was like "lover" will be my last famous album, people will be tired of me when I turned 30, but now she's about to be 32 tomorrow and folklore and evermore are both successful
I must say, a lot of people did that "will you marry me?" moment in that meet&greet after the first went viral... It's so strange... I wouldn't want that, like, you can clearly see the girl can't stop looking at Taylor. How real is that? And if it's real, this is the worst possible moment for that.
Hey Andrew, just starting the video and Imma comment already. I actually think you have NOT misunderstood the lyrics and intentions of Miss Taylor Swift's songs. In fact, I'd say you have a better reading of them then the overwhelming majority of people who react to her stuff, or even many devoted fans. We, as fans, get involved with paratextual stuff like the documentary, the promo around the album, and the public narrative around her and the music, but the music really does speak for itself. I don't think this is a super popular opinion among fans, but I think even her explanations of her songs sometimes cloud one's reading of the song itself. So, I'm very, very glad you're reacting to this doc because I really do love your videos, and having more content is awesome af. But don't feel like you have to interpret the music in accordance with some official narrative around them. You do you, man. Your readings have been spot on, and you've caught on to emotional depth that no amount of references could cover. Thanks for making these! I've enjoyed every single one.
Hey Andrew. Interesting commentary. I was never a big fan 'til I saw your video on the Blank Space performance at the Grammy Museum. Real deal talent. Her acoustic music is her future as a performer.
I've been a fan since early in her career, when I was a teen, and I was NOT into country at all, and I tried to hate her. But her talent with writing and connecting with people was undeniable. I, along with most of her big fans (if not all), love the big shows and spectacles but agree that she shines best when it is just her alone with her guitar (or piano). Every tour, she travels to a bstage at the back of the arena or stadium to play a few songs acoustically (and for the last 3 songs has included a "surprise" song- sometimes very deep cuts that she has rarely played, but fans who met her had to convince her that she should as she thought nobody would know or want to hear certain old songs 🤣 really underlines the self-esteem issues seen in the documentary). We would love an all acoustic, deep cuts tour but agree it might be hard to pull off in stadiums/arenas
Actually, she's the head of her own management. It gives her more sense of creativity and control over how she wants to handle her career unlike other artists who get exhausted by their managers.
Interestingly, one of the reviews she got for folklore goes: "folklore proves that she can thrive away from the noise: if you interpret “classmates” as pop peers, Swift is no longer competing." New subgenre of pop music dominates the charts every year but folklore shows how pop music standard is the least of her concern. She's already THE Taylor Swift and whatever she does, people will watch and listen.
I think you can enjoy her music without knowing anything about her life, the reason why people wanted you to watch the documentary is because her music can be interpreted in different ways and knowing her a bit helps for a more accurate interpretation.
I feel like ideal beauty stereotypes are perpetuated by the media & the industry, not the artists. Especially at the young age she had when she was starting out, she was just trying to adapt. I remember Pink saying how they tried to transform her into the new Britney (label, agents, producers) and they even made Britney sing & look a certain way to have a certain appeal. The industry & media have molds and they try to fit people into them, some have the strength to say no but this can come with the cost if your career.
Exactly... Plus you can't really blame a young girl for being pretty and using that to her advantage. It's not "ruining the music industry", obviously anyone is welcome as far as they're talented. E.g Adele, Ed Sheeran, didn't fit the beauty standards yet became famous

The music she’s recording in the doc is off her album Lover - which is the first album she made with her new record label / fully owns. The album grew on me soo much, it didn’t really get its moment to shine though because of Covid. And then as we know she surprised us with folklore & evermore.
I’d say watch her Reputation tour next but idk if you’re ready for that era 😂

Taylor has said in the past year that she's enjoyed branching out and learning new things such as directing her own music videos and she has now written and directed a short film she said in the interview that the more things she can do on her own she's going to do so this ties in with what you said at the end of your video about hoping she doesn't rely so much on her team. At an awards acceptance speech in 2019 she said she's focusing Less on what people say she can't do and more on doing whatever the hell she wants

It’s actually very strange to me to think people viewed her the way you did, as representing the music industry in a negative way, as us her fans saw her as the opposite. To us from day one she was completely opposite of the perfect little pop princess created by the industry to succeed. She was this shy, goofy awkward band geek who was made of for dancing awkwardly and not being the best singer. To us she felt like the ultimate fan girl who against all the odds, made it. She felt like one of us.

I agree with you on the point that I don't want to know too much about an artist that I love because of the Media. They twist things around or just make up stuff. I try to only watch or read things where the artist is giving the information. I know Taylor is an amazing and caring person. Let her live her life without the paparazzi stalking her. She is a person and deserves her privacy.
I simply enjoy her art, all of it, since her debut! I don't judge or critique it. Then I watch TH-camrs react to her and NF to see their reactions and analysis of the music. I love how you guys can see things I never noticed.

35:35 just to clarify 2003 Taylor was in high school, not a famous singer/songwriter, that part is just showing what happened to country artists (namely The Chicks) just for saying the "stupidest" comment (I am NOT dissing The Chicks when I say "stupid" I am referencing to how NATALIE frame the comment as being stupid and that if she had KNOWN, that was going to happen she would have said something more MEANINGFUL) though the public reaction THAT, well that WAS stupid.
When you really dive deep into her lyrics you realize what an amazing songwriter she is. There are so many references and double meanings in her songs, it's insane. I come from a rock/metal background, my heroes are people like Lemmy, Ozzy, Freddie, Maynard,..... but I truely believe she is one of the most talented songwriters of this generation. And it looks so easy when you look into how she works writing songs. I try writing poems and lyrics and it is really hard work for me, but for her, it is kind of a natural thing. Amazing!

also this was all before the pandemic, before folklore. she just releases music now whenever she wants lol. unfortunately all that masters thing happened so she has to put in effort for these rerecordings to be successful which means she's still gonna have to be in the spotlight.
What really made me appreciate her even more is that you see that music is her entire life. As a kid when she received her first guitar you can feel and see the joy in her eyes. Even if she was left without a penny, she would still be writing and playing music. You can see she was driven at a very young age and that her parents never pushed her to do anything. She manifested her career and her parents could have said ‘No, it’s enough’ but they believed in her, and that’s just amazing. Her mother and her used to drive/sleep hours in a car dropping demo…I loved that documentary

I am 59, pretty old for a Swiftie…but I’m proud of it and even introduced my 86-year-old Mama to Taylor’s music! 😊🎉

The song you said you adore at the end of the movie is called The Archer and it's a very introspective and thoughtful song by Taylor featured on the Lover album
what I find interesting is when any reaction hits the mark of the political part "I'm a 22 y/o singer..." you can see and hear everyone in the audience take it as a joke and laugh BUT if you really notice her face she is not laughing not even smirking. that tells me that she has something to say BUT people are not ready to hear it and so far I have not SEEN anyone making a comment or mentioning that reaction of her. That small clip speaks VOLUMES as to how opposed her feelings are to what she said JUST to appease the audience.
She is so self aware. So talented. So open. So strong. I wasn’t believed. My life took a turn. Her words stay with me when I’m having a hard time standing tall. She inspires me and I’m a 37 yr old adult. Great docu and so interesting hearing your take on the music industry and how it’s changed/changing.
You got some really interesting takes on the documentary, it really felt like a completely different experience to see somebody like you analyze this documentary. I'm gonna be thinking about this all day.

She had taken independent and powerful decisions before when she was very very young - decisions that were considered to be risky by her own label but she took them because she is smart and could foresee how things will roll, what her fans would eventually want from her. She always seems to have a plan and a distinct vision of the routes she wants to take to express herself and thus the corners she wants her art to visit. There's of course a production machine behind her but to think she does not sharply express herself and put her true self, her thoughts out there via her art like CoOl InDiE artists do would be stupid, even more so now at this point in her career. She did that even when she was being heavily ridiculed.

I was enjoying so much the acting that I completely forgot this was a reaction to Miss Americana. You're doing a great job man. Glad to hear your thoughts on this doc. I enjoyed this. And hey, I'm curious to know: do you like doing sketches? You're very good at it. You had my attention from the get-go. I like a little bit of some comedy on the side. Another thing also came to mind: do you jam to some recorded sounds? You've got that guitar with you and you sing a mini intro songs in your vids, and I thought, "Does he sit down and listen to music while he makes up tunes on his guitar and joins the music he's listening to? Cuz I'd like to watch that. I miss those times in high school when we would go to some kids house and he'd have his garage door opened and he's just jamming to the music he's playing along to. Sometimes, he'd get his other friends and play a song they came up with that week. Love those spontaneous jam sessions. Anyways, enough rambling on my part. This was worthy content dude lol. SUBBED! Thanks so much for this reaction. I found your comments really thought-provoking and insightful, and really enjoyed it.
After this, in the years following, Taylor has been doing what she wants. Directing, dropping albums with no traditional fan faire and promotion. Rerecording her albums to take ownership. Releasing music fans want (all too well 10min version) and just keeping connection with fans. Does she still care about Grammys? Maybe, I dont know. Should she? No, the grammys to me is not a measure of talent or artistry. I dont know what it is, I dont even think they know anymore. I would say Taylor is above the Grammys along with actually talented artists of this generation. Glad you watch this, I know what you mean about not wanting to know too much about an artist you are beginning to like/appreciate but I think in Taylors case, because so much of her music is personal, it helps the listener appreciate her songs and lyrics more. Going into the reputation era knowing she wrote that after the year she was gone and hurting because of the hate campaign against her and her taking the weapons they used against her (calling her a snake, the phone call etc) and making it part of her comeback then going on an all studium tour and selling millions of the album makes you respect her.

I feel you. I lost two "can't lose" people in my life at different times and both were my closest, most important people. It's changes you fundamentally. It changes what's important anymore.
Here’s the thing though a man in country music can voice his political opinions like Kenny, tim, brad, Keith and get praised but when a woman in country music when she speaks out about politics she’s told to shut up, sing and look pretty it’s a double standard that is so old and Though I may not agree with all of Taylor’s political opinions I admire her for voicing her opinions and she has inspired me to think about my opinions and to be brave enough to voice them and I will love her forever for that

Commenting this at the very beginning of this video, but I just want to mention to you and anyone who's told you to watch Miss Americana - the documentary Journey to Fearless from early 2010 depicts her early career in greater detail and also gives insights into the preparations for the Fearless World Tour (2009-2010). Definitely a must-see for anyone who tries to understand her better, even tho it does not go as personally deep as Miss Americana.

With Folklore and Evermore i think Taylor evolved in a way even far from this girl in this documentary, she figured it out she doesnt need to be in The spot, she Just need Music. She Just need to create with Love and believe herself. Im so so proud.
I think folklore and evermore are hands down the best albums. I feel like we see growth in her song writing and her singing and her mental state especially. She seems like she's actually working through the things that have hurt her for so long and we get to not only see her working through it but then see her be happier on the other side. Its so freaking cool

Gentle correction, while she is a fan of herself.... she is SURE of herself, something women are told is bad and intimidating. She is learning and growing and always shares with us the lessons she's learned along the way, like an older sister who has been through the trenches and has advice for her little siblings. Taylor always grown so much and is becoming more and more sure of her talent, but has stayed humble.

I think folklore really was a natural extension of this journey. It was made in secret with no outside input from her label or marketers and no real hope of commercial success because of the pandemic. And it cemented her as an artist rather than pop star.

I like the phrase you said imagine losing somebody you can't lose that really hit me because a couple of songs from Taylor was about her mom one is called the best day and I don't remember the other one but I think it's on her new record it reminds me of My adoptive mom. You don't realize how much they're there for you until you get older and they get sick and you have to help them in return feel grateful they've been there for you. I really respect Andrea for raising a very self-aware responsible woman. But like I said there's just something about Taylor that's different and she's very authentic and very self-aware and vulnerable enough to share her feelings onto paper and make it so relatable to females and to everybody. Feels everything at the same time and I think that's something special

I’m so excited! I’ve been a swiftie since I was 5 so I saw this many a time but this weekend I watched it with my mom and it was the first time she’d seen it so the coincidence is cool. Also, the music industry thing is a bit interesting considering she was signed to an independent label and was one of the first artists on it and the only reason that label did well was because of her. She’s the reason the label was successful not the other way around. I don’t necessarily think there’s anything wrong with a label helping you have success because you still have to be extremely talented and no matter how talented you are you can’t become successful without exposure but it wasn’t the case for her.
i thought Miss Americana covered the issue of the her records being sold to Scooter, damn i can't believe its 2023 not 2020

I think you are getting the dates wrong. Taylor debuted in 2006 not in the early 2000's. So she wasn't around when the Dixie chicks.
Re: your comment at the end about hoping she continues on the path “away” from the more commercial side of music, the pressures, etc… Taylor has talked about (and clearly we’ve all seen it) that lockdown for COVID essentially took away all of her prior checklist ways of thinking about music, and freed up her time too, so musical masterpieces like Folklore and Evermore were the product. It seems like these are the kind of experiences that really change you as a person, and also clearly as an artist. It seems like she really misses connecting with fans on tour, but also completely loves this more manageable life without those constant pressures… I’m really excited to see the “hybrid model” she develops in the future to incorporate only the best parts of these different ways of functioning into a truly curated life for herself… and us too! :))) She is so good to her fans… truly thinks about us and is so incredibly grateful for our support… I’m a fairly new full-on “Swifty”, lol, but I’ve never known any other artist to truly value their fans in such a real, honest way.
The re-records are a perfect example: yes, she’s reproducing the original songs nearly identically (and only making slight changes where there is room to improve/perfect them…), BUT she’s including a sizable number of “vault tracks” (written at the time of the original albums) to help “round out” the complete picture of the storytelling for each album, according to HER vision (without the pressures and editing from her record label), and also with her fans in mind… after so many years of interactions, she truly knows what we are dying to hear, what will delight and thrill us, etc… and she takes such joy in making sure we are in on the jokes, etc. “All Too Well 10mv” is a perfect example… you commented that Taylor still seemed really angry with Jake after so many years… but actually I think it was really about *finally* working thru unresolved issues around the SONG (she and nearly all fans consider it her best written song ever)… it was never a single, never had a video, so this time around she made it the STAR that is truly is and gave it the full treatment, lol… and in the process gave her fans the experience they’ve been craving for sooo many years! Very. Cathartic. 😂 It’s a *really* fun time to be a Swifty!
