I'm so excited , i've decided i want to get into pentesting, cracked and hacked a couple of things when i was a kid , have the basic knowledge since i grew up next to a pc. Just found you channel and will be doing your 15 hour course! One of the things that makes you a really big draw for me is your background. You mentioned transitioning from a career as an accountant to a hands-on cyber security professional. I actually work in public accounting (Big 4) as a Senior IT Auditor and have done so for over a decade. Prior to that I did two years of basic systems administration (application servers and some light network and database administration) and did a couple of years of help desk in college. Would love to see a video on how you made this career transition. I would very much like to make this transition myself. Last year I signed up for, and am currently pursuing, a graduate level in IT Security though Kennesaw State University. At the end of the year I will be 2/3 of the way through it and will complete it in December 2020. I currently hold the Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) certification, however want to move from IT Audit into something more hands on technical. Would love to get your take on the best way to do this and how you transitioned from accounting to cyber (hands-on). Thanks for the Great Video! Very much appreciated! All the best man!
This is me all the preferred skills TCM had when he started apparently. ✅ 33y/o, 8 years clean from drugs and crime, I just resigned as a cabinetmaker to be a full time pen tester, I have triplet 8 year old boys, and I’m ready to give them what they deserve… homelab is finished, I’m starting BBP and putting in applications left and right. It got to the point where I couldn’t work, take care of triplets, and study all in one day. So luckly I have support that will let me quit my job as a cabinetmaker and fully dive into a career, where I can continue to grow. Wish me luck on reinventing myself for the 3rd time in my life.

First video of your's that Ive watched, absolutely great content man! You thoroughly and thoughtfully explained all your talking points and you were very blunt and honest about the field and its realities, I will definitely be watching more of your videos!
This was an awesome video you talked about. I started out the same way with help desk and moved up. Have the same issue at work everyone just wants to collect a paycheck and not learn unless they are told too. I'm more driven to move up and learn. If you're not learning you are not growing. That's what I tell people all the time. Towards the end of the video, the only one things I might have a problem is talking to people. Explaining thing some times hard for me since I jump around so much. Another thing I might have trouble is writing the report. I know that's a big deal and stuff. I'm working on my grammar but it scares me. I know some people use templates and just write something simple but I don't know if that's enough when dealing with companies. besides that keep up the great work.

I’m 46 and been building my own PCs since my early 20s. I’ve done help desk, s/w training and lecturing in IT skills. But now I’m a priest with several churches but that’s not working out as I hoped, plus I long to go back to IT. So I’m teaching myself CCNA and using the internet to learn cyber security. Problem is here in Europe the hr departments mostly ask for a college degree. Dropped out on second year of CS: slow and boring af. It’s a 4 year program here. I am at a stage in my career where I had to give up my job due to relocation . Now I have realised the tech world has moved way ahead and what I did is really not relevant anymore.Functional Managers in IT are an extinct species. In a way I did realise this fact and got my Masters in Cyber Security a couple of years back. I found out that hardcore technical skills are necessary. Iam now about to step into the world of pentesting and am going to follow the ejpt , Oscp path. Maybe even the Ecppt before I take the Oscp. Like many out there I don’t come from a programming background. I am taking baby steps learning python and am going to crank it up now.For people like me out there looking to make a mid career change I would like to say, don’t get disheartened and keep at it. It is never too late. I had a fellow student in my Masters course in her mid fifties and that was very motivating. Knowledge never goes to waste. As he said in this video , if you like learning then there is nothing that can stop you 🙂. All the best to those looking to get into pentesting.

I am a non technical information security officer and I've just realised that a technical background or an above average tech knowledge is so necessary in finding roles in infotec... I have been so discouraged but now trying to do all I can to augment my GRC knowledge with technical skills.

Whats your opinion on Cyber Security bootcamps ? Recently started one and really like it as I'm learning a lot, but havent commited yet because I'm still in the ''trial'' course, the ''extended'' course runs at $15,000 and is about 9 months long. Course list is : Trial Course Windows Server 2012 Lynux Fundamentals Cisco Cyber Defender Cyber Infrastructures Introduction to Python Career Services
So, does this bootcamp come with cert vouchers and work towards specific certs? Also, what are you wanting to be when you grow up? This looks like it kind of touches around a lot of different areas, with a main focus on networking/defense. If you want a job as a SOC analyst, this may be an okay place to start. Do they have placement numbers and salaries? I'm always wary on bootcamps because you can achieve the same results in your own time for a lot cheaper. This is given that you are self-motivated and can learn on your own. Some people only learn in classroom settings.

No vouchers, but they are saying it prepares you for 7 certs : CCNA Security CCENT COMPTIA SET+ LINUX LPI ESSENTIAL MCSA CCSP The claim is that post graduation you should be able to get an entry level job in the cyber security industry, starting around $80k, but the class is fairly new, so I havent been able to find grads. They are saying the curriculum was put together but their research asking employers exactly what they look for @@TCMSecurityAcademy

Now I have realised the tech world has moved way ahead and what I did is really not relevant anymore.Functional Managers in IT are an extinct species. In a way I did realise this fact and got my Masters in Cyber Security a couple of years back. I found out that hardcore technical skills are necessary. Iam now about to step into the world of pentesting and am going to follow the ejpt , Oscp path. Maybe even the Ecppt before I take the Oscp. Like many out there I don’t come from a programming background. I am taking baby steps learning python and am going to crank it up now.For people like me out there looking to make a mid career change I would like to say, don’t get disheartened and keep at it. It is never too late. I had a fellow student in my Masters course in her mid fifties and that was very motivating. Knowledge never goes to waste. As he said in this video , if you like learning then there is nothing that can stop you 🙂. All the best to those looking to get into pentesting.
Oh my goodness.. Thank you for this.. I am a non technical information security officer and I've just realised that a technical background or an above average tech knowledge is so necessary in finding roles in infotec... I have been so discouraged but now trying to do all I can to augment my GRC knowledge with technical skills.
@@UKjaydee what are you focusing on in your studies. Just to get some ideas as I want to focus on GRC to. I am currently going to start working on the CISM besides a pentest cert. CRISC later for a more focused Risk management approach.

There is a shortage. However, most companies are only wanting to hire experienced people, which is causing issues with people finding work.

#1 sans institute (under..graduate and masters degree in penetration testing)
#2 giac certifications (penetration testing path..7 certs)
#3 elearn security certs (6 certs)
#4 offensive security certs (5 certs)
#5 ec council certs (4 certs)
notice: if you don't have a foundation knowledge in computers you should take (comptia A+) first.

Can you do more technical stuff along with the physical pen testing?
I will at some point. A lot of the techincal stuff gets really niche and loses viewers. I still will make them, but the audience appreciates some of the more beginner stuff.
Whats your opinion on Cyber Security bootcamps ? Recently started one and really like it as I'm learning a lot, but havent commited yet because I'm still in the ''trial'' course, the ''extended'' course runs at $15,000 and is about 9 months long. Course list is :

So, does this bootcamp come with cert vouchers and work towards specific certs? Also, what are you wanting to be when you grow up? This looks like it kind of touches around a lot of different areas, with a main focus on networking/defense. If you want a job as a SOC analyst, this may be an okay place to start. Do they have placement numbers and salaries?
I'm always wary on bootcamps because you can achieve the same results in your own time for a lot cheaper. This is given that you are self-motivated and can learn on your own. Some people only learn in classroom settings.

The claim is that post graduation you should be able to get an entry level job in the cyber security industry, starting around $80k, but the class is fairly new, so I havent been able to find grads. They are saying the curriculum was put together but their research asking employers exactly what they look for

Thanks for the kind words. Skip the CEH entirely unless you work in DOD 8570/government work. Look into eLearnSecurity's PTS and PTP. Look into the OSCP after that.

Awesome video! Currently looking for my next position in IT. Debating either Network Engineer or Pen Tester route. I feel like either route it'll be same learning curve, sounds like you worked both too! I do like that with Pen Tester you work with people. Whats your advice to someone who's debating between those two options?
My advice is to choose the path that you will love and stay interested in. Pick something that doesn't feel like you're coming into work every day.
How do you get into the industry now with covid? Is it possible to get a help desk job remotely?
