I have to get one of those receivers one day. My mentor had a Hammarlund HQ-129X receiver and a DX100 transmitter in 1966. We did a lot of chatting on 80 meters AM. Wish I would have kept in contact with him. Thanks Buddy for renewing my interest Hammarlund receivers....now I have to find one here locally! 73 Lyle
Hi Lyle. They are really nice receivers. I like them more than any others ones out there of the vintage. The 140's are getting harder to find. Thanks my friend.
Really enjoyed this video, Buddy! The receiver is the same model that I got on loan from my Elmer back when I was a kid. I had a ton of fun with it! 73 and stay warm, Brett K5WXP
That Nor Easter put about 10 inches of partly cloudy in my driveway Buddy. Temps here in southern NY have been between 5 and 18 since Christmas. We may get above freezing tomorrow. Looking forward to the 140X repair. Stay warm. 73 Doug.
Hello Buddy! I will say this: If you had both of those radios sent to you as gifts, you are truly blessed! I have the HQ-180, and it is like new. I have not had it on in several years, but have left it plugged in, and the analog clock still runs smooth as silk. When I first got into ham radio as a novice, I would have given my left ____ for one of those Hammarlund radios. Happy for you with some of those old boatanchors! 73, Dan w4mnc
I can say I am really blessed to have so many friends here on TH-cam. They are some really nice receivers Dan. Will be fun getting them up and running again. Thanks for the comment.
Wow! That is a nice 140X. At first I thought the cover was missing with the reflections. Good score, Buddy. If I had more room, I'd be a boat anchor horder- ha!
The Hammerlund HQ-140-X is one very nice radio i need to get an old tuber myself but i do not have the equipment for alignment and stuff. Nice thanks can't wait to hear her in all her glory.
Those are really nice radios I have a Hammurlund HQ101A that looks good and still works well but currently using my Signal Corps Radio receiver R-336/GRC-26 ww2 Korea vintage. Rebuilt from a radio that was obviously used as a test for techs four wires cut in an IF can after 20 screws were removed the 4 wires were found cut then screwed back together and 5 other obvious wires were cut. But its all fixed and works perfectly now. Some days you just get lucky>Somebody really did take good care of that HQ140x perfect condition. Thanks for sharing
WoW..... I use to own one of these the one on the right back in the late 70's but gave it away very big receiver could find room on my shelf....! The Rig Looks In Great Shape Anyways, Looking Forward To The Next Video Buddy!! Stay Warm
I bought a 140x on epay about 3 years ago. Got lucky. Didn't take much to get it running. Picked a 2nd one up on a local auction for cheap last year. Has a little more cosmetic wear but works great. Need to do an alignment on both of them. Love them chocolate knobs.
Those aren't hot spots on the lid. That's the radios odometer. :-) That's what I call them on Tram D201's. Nice looking radio and great addition to the collection. You don't need any additional heaters for the shop. Just turn on a couple of those boat anchors and you'll be toasty warm in no time.
In my basement shack in Alaska in the late 70's I used to put my feet on top of the Drake L-4B amp supply to keep the toes toasty! Something to be said for electric heat! TNX for sharing Buddy, those are gonna be great on the vintage operating desk! 73 - Dino KL0S
Glad you have a great classic to bring up to perfection. Don't understand the added connection to the sensitivity pot. You are off to a great start for 2018.
I'm not even into ham radio equipment, and I like that unit... I don't think I would try to clean up the dials....It is 60+ yrs old, I think it adds character. Mr. Carlson's Lab did a restore on one of those and I liked it then too.. Just great looking. Good luck with it
Both of those receivers look pretty good and the problems seem to be fairly minor. I know that the alignment procedure can be tedious from what I've seen with Mr. Carlson's Lab.
Thanks, I really like them. I think it makes the face of the receiver stand out a bit more over the standard black knobs. I felt like you the first time I saw one.
+The Radio Shop You boys are getting a small taste of what we deal with up here north of you. An inch of snow up here probably won't even get the kiddies to school late!
I'm just ribbin' you a little, Buddy. I know we are much more prepared for it here. We deal with it every year, and it sucks here too! Except, I love to see the deer walking in front of the pines in pristine snow along our rear fence line. It's a beautiful sight.
as much as I love this radio, I would have grabbed that connector. I just know it. of course I probably would have used an isolation transformer, but I don't think I would have use an auto-transformer, because the radio looks so good.
What a beautiful receiver Buddy. I wanted to tell you a funning thing that happened the other day. I'm telling my son Jason who lives in N. Carolina about you for about the 5th time. I told him I would look you up if I ever get out your way and say hello to my friend Buddy. He asked me what town you live in so I looked it up and it was the town my son lives in. It turns out that he works in a building that is about a stone throw away from your house. He was telling me that a ham radio guy was real close to his shop when I was looking for your address and it turned out to be you. Small world some times. So if you see a guy standing at your door named Jason it will probably be my son wanting to say hello. If you have any computer issues he is the guy to ask about it he's very good with programming and repair. He told me about your antenna on a tower I think it was and he noticed a time or two it rotating. I thought you might find this entertaining. 73's Dale
Wow Dale, Small world indeed!. I will keep and eye out for him. And drop by sometime. Saturdays are good. Would be my pleasure to meet him. And yourself if you are ever in the area. Thanks for sharing that with me my friend. have a great one.

Great rig !...I have a HQ-140-X that I listen to every day on.BC 670 AM sports talk radio. Mine is about 1952. I noticed the S-meter on my rig registers 1/2 of the strength that yours does , even with very strong audio signals coming through the speakers. If your S-meter is correct, you are not getting the audio output that is happening with my rig. Perhaps AF amplification of is not quite up to snuff. Love these old boat anchors..Best of luck with yours...Dana WN6OHG
I grew up with the vacuum tube rigs and never got tired of same. I will be Am 72, a Novice in 1965, Extra Class now but could never give up my org. call sign. hihi Take care !...I am 800 watts [ if need be] CW- A1 mode all the way pounding brass: perhaps will see u on air...if propagation ever improves..

Had a Halicrafters S100? As a kid circa 1959 got it for Christmas from my dad. This video brings back memories. Well, thanks for the memories. 73
Glad I could spark some old memories. Thanks
Really enjoyed this video, Buddy! The receiver is the same model that I got on loan from my Elmer back when I was a kid. I had a ton of fun with it! 73 and stay warm, Brett K5WXP
Thanks Brett. Really nice receiver. Will be fun using it. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Doug, that is nasty stuff you guys have up there. I think this was the worse one since 84 or so. Thanks for watching.

Talk about finding a good home......this radio found the perfect home. It will be cared for and not left in some attic to deteriorate. Gotta love it.
Wow! That is a nice 140X. At first I thought the cover was missing with the reflections. Good score, Buddy. If I had more room, I'd be a boat anchor horder- ha!
Thanks James, yes as I was filming the video I was like ?? Then I saw the thing was so shiny it was an illusion lol.
The best to you and yours in the upcoming year! Thanks for the informative videos. Got down to 67 last night, I know wimpy Califorina's . Carl
Thanks Carl. Man that is nice and toasty there. All the best my friend.
The Hammerlund HQ-140-X is one very nice radio i need to get an old tuber myself but i do not have the equipment for alignment and stuff. Nice thanks can't wait to hear her in all her glory.
Good morning Buddy, beautiful radio, can hardly wait for the restoration videos. Big thumbs up to Mel. Happy New Year my friend. Joel
Thanks Joel, yes it is really a nice looking rig. One of the best I have seen. Thanks for stopping in my friend.

Thanks Aaron. I owned a few other brands so these are my first Hammarlunds. Really nice gear. Take care

Great video. Those are fine looking radios.
Thanks Anthony.

You don't need any additional heaters for the shop. Just turn on a couple of those boat anchors and you'll be toasty warm in no time.
Odometers, I like that. I think if I turned on all the boatanchors here I trip my breaker lol. Really need to upgrade to 200 amp service in the shop.

Now that is the way to stay warm! Thanks for stopping in Dino
it's a muting plug, to avoid receiver damage when used with a separate transmitter.
After looking more into the schematic I determined that was what they were doing. Very simple attempt. Thanks for the confirmation.
Wow...love the old hammarlunds...I think that plug is to shunt receive when used with a transmitter...maybe
Prosperous new year to you

Amazing looking receivers!!!!! I am envoius.
Thanks Richard, it is very nice.
Good thing you have a sturdy bench.
You got that right. These things are heavy. Specially when you have those Viking II's and TX-1 on the bench.
Nice! Once you get the time to go through them to repair and align them those will be great!
Real nice radios Buddy, thanks for the video
Hi Bill, Hope you are staying warm. Man it made me cold watching your last video! Thanks for stopping in.
Thanks Buddy, I always enjoy your videos
Hi Jessie

Glad you have a great classic to bring up to perfection. Don't understand the added connection to the sensitivity pot. You are off to a great start for 2018.
Thanks Ron. Yep it is a muting jack that was installed. Pretty clever too.

Yes I agree. Those dials are just to fragile to attempt. Paul did an excellent restore on the one he had. Thanks for stopping in.
Tenho um desse modelo: Hammarlund HQ-140-X, Original funcionando, no estado da Bahia Brasil
Nice radios buddy big thumbs up 👍

Gosh that is cold, stay warm.
Awesome radios. I'm jealous!
Thanks :-)

Hi Randy. Yes nice units. Will be fun aligning them that is for sure.
It was 114.8f here where i am in Australia today
When you align it, please sweep the IF filters/cans. Show how you set it up, etc. Thanks.
Will try and do that.
Anyone know the story behind the chocolate brown knobs? Seems like an odd color.
Very good question. Often wondered that myself.
Great video, Buddy. I'm looking forward to the next video for this classic receiver. 73 DE K7RMJ Frank
Thanks Frank, will be fun to get these up and running.
Thanks for the video. Nice radio. By the way, what do you think of the brown knobs? I don't like them too much.
Thanks, I really like them. I think it makes the face of the receiver stand out a bit more over the standard black knobs. I felt like you the first time I saw one.
Funny hearing a short burst of the Kansas City Chiefs playoff game loss while you were tuning around.
Good ear, I did not catch that.
+The Radio Shop You boys are getting a small taste of what we deal with up here north of you. An inch of snow up here probably won't even get the kiddies to school late!

Put ya a salamander kerosene heater out there and you'll stay toasty enough.
That would be much cheaper than switching over to 200 amp service :)
