I juts opened up my first booster box from this set last night and pulled a Strip Mine Expedition Land and about 4 mythics and 9 foils in total. I'm just off my rocker xD!
Congrats to everyone who pulled some fun or great cards and best of luck to those that didn't fare so well. Just in case people think I didn't pull one :p postimg.org/image/abjg61a1h/
Aside from gear reviews this has been my favorite regular part of the channel. Although I do really appreciate the creative new videos you have been making! Keep up the good work!
+Francisco Sampedro Somehow he never takes in account Unco and Commons. Even in KoT he didn't account for the Swiftspears (which were worth 3-4 dollars at that point iirc)
+Volvary well, he did take on acount any nonfoil "remand" for the mm2015 video, so there is my doubt. With it the last box may have been wort 100u$? That is what i want to know.
I just now realised how time consuming this is to edit, the intro/ outro are simple but having to look up the price for every rare and mythic he opens ouch. then you think about the 'physical' work that goes into it and the financial loss in doing this. as the rules are keep playing till you lose money
+Dasnazzypenguin The few bucks he often loses are made up by those "crack packs" (expeditions, fetch lands and stuff) and with the video. As for the time, yeah it must but he does get all the co/unco he could ever need in those sets.
+Dasnazzypenguin For me to open 36 packs in a booster box, sort them out by rarity, checking on prices of the mythics, foils and rares and then sleeving each of them and THEN sorting all the duplicates of each card...took about 5 hours. Probably would have been 3-4 if I wasn't talking to a friend, but still...the Professor has nearly double the work to film and edit all of this! Major props.
And honestly, the best card I ever pulled from a pack (value wise, at the time of pull)was my first pack getting back into magic near the beginning of Khans (early october). Sakrhan, the Dragonspeaker. I had some lengendarily good pulls from the FRF sealed deck packs too. Pack 1, Ugin (who I still have, if anyone is interested), pack 2 Polluted Delta. And at the FRF gameday, not so much value, but I built b/w weenies and didn't lose so much as a game.
Anyone saying, "This set isn't worth anything." You're completely wrong. This set is solid, maybe the most solid set in years. This set immediately had cards go into modern decks, and even offered commander players new staples. Yes, you can make the argument of, "He didn't even get his money back on the second box." Yes he did, this set is littered with $1.50-$2.50 cards, which is better than the average $.30 cent rares most sets have. This is gonna be a set people look back at years from now and go, "Man, I wish I had bought more packs of that set."
I usually buy 1 box at release because a friend of mine and I like to draft and I like the thrill of opening packs. Usually, the boxes are duds. But, this time I got an Expedition Canopy Vista. Not the best, Not the worst. But, I was pretty happy to strike a valuable card for once. The boxs' value was well over the $100 price tag. However, This is the first time since Theros that it has been like that. Love the content, Professor. Keep up the good work
I was very pleased with my oath of the gate watch experience, as it is the first set I've been able to play at pre release with and on top of that, it was my first real draft aswell. I'm shocked that so many show stopping cards are worth so little, even when they are feared on the battlefield
The best box I ever bought was a box of Japanese Origins from one of my LGSs. Paid normal English price but pulled a Nissa and 2 Jace's (one of which was foiled)
This is pretty cool, but it is really easy to guess the number of boxes from the length of the video. You could just add a half an hour of blackness at the end of the less impressive Booster Box Games to leave the fun unspoiled :D
Whoop whoop! I've been waiting for this. A play set of Storm Chaser Mages would contribute a fair sum to the total, as would a few other of the uncommons of this set. I feel like I paid a lot more for my singles, but that's UK prices for you.
TheIsaacMatthews It might just be a UK thing but here we generally don't dictate how others spend their money. It's considered a bit of a social foul. I'm happy using Madhouse knowing it supports a local business with a great track record. I'm happy to pay what is a meager fee when securing that you actually get sent the card... I've used alternatives before, one which I presume you operate on. I, as does my LGS and community recognize it as a collection of sleazy sellers who lure people in with low prices, who don't ship the cards and refuse to be held accountable for 'loss' or damage.
I'm from England, and I'm not saying you wasting your money is a bad thing, but rather than you would so happily follow a business that clearly puts up a huge market and attempts to come across as a "local business" when infact, it is a monopoly. MKM (magiccardmarket) is a network of various LGSs from all across Europe, which you pay through a middle man and therefore cannot be scammed. That is a way you can actually buy from small stores and individual sellers safely. The Facebook page I mentioned before is a network of people who sell and trade their cards, there is a rating document and sure, while there is a risk involved, it has been lowered as far as humanly possible and all purchases require tracked shipping. I do not work for any LGS, nor do I own a selling business. I am a University student that works at a McDonald's part-time and I value every penny that I earn, and do not appreciate a big business scamming me (MagicMadhouse). Also, to close this conversation, MMH lists a FS Tarmogoyf at £150, while on MKM and the facebook group you can easily pick one up for £80. Call that a small mark up? Maybe you just play a lot of casual and don't require more expensive cards with a very visible markup.
Professor, do you think money rares and Expeditions are front-loaded (more at release)? Kevin at Derium's thinks so and I'm beginning to think so too. I preordered all of my stuff with some coworkers and we had some insane value in most of our boxes and fat packs. We had 3 Expeditions total in the case we got. Each box with an Expedition also had a lot of the money rares.
+thirstydogMTG Well steam vents still costs a bazillion dollars, so maybe not? Certain cards that don't fit an archetype in standard seem to drop a lot more than everything else. You should probably sell most now though. I'm under the impression that kalitas will go up in price in april though (shadows over innistrad will almost certainly have vampires), so maybe not that one.
+thirstydogMTG At my prerelease there were 3 people who opened expeditions and about 8 people who opened planeswalkers. I think I agree with you on that.
+thirstydogMTG you might want to think so, but realize how much product gets oppened at pre release. The only artificial inflation is the random foil rare/mythic promo. 1 that promo with the date is almost always worth more than the normal foil version, 2 it is essentially a "free" extra packs worth of rare/mythics being opened at the pre-release. At a standard FNM say you get enough to get a draft- say 10 people+ standard. That is 30 packs open total + any opened as prize support. A single pre release is larger, so probably 20 people, and you open 6 packs + the promo. So at a single pre release gets 120 packs open ( 4 times the amount) + promo's and happens and most game stores were i am 3-5 times in a weekend. So call it 160 packs in a weekend ( many places are much higher)+ prize support. The numbers mean more of those mythics and expeditions will be opened.
If people like me don't crack cases and flip the singles to be sold on websites such as CardShark, Amazon, and Ebay then the price of singles is set by the big guys like StarCity Games and everyone end up paying more for singles, so the way I see it it's a damn good thing that people like me are out there willing to play the booster box game.
Pulled an expedition and russian foil kozilek on day of release. I listened to you about price changes and dumped a lot of my cards away and got staples.
I opened an English box of Oath and maybe had $70 - $80 in value. I opened a Japanese box of Oath and made out like gangbusters; Foil Nissa, reg Nissa, Chandra, Kozilek, and several other great cards. But I only open for fun; I dont expect crazy value when it comes to opening a box; especially with a set being opened as much as this has been. I usually only open a single box of each set; but I judged an event and my payment was the second box; so I didn't have to purchase it.
this set doesn't have a bunch of expensive cards, but at least 15 cards are seeing standard play, and within 2 weeks of release, 7-8 cards are seeing a lot of play in modern, and more seem like they could
I've been waiting impatiently for this to get posted, and I was extremely excited to see it was finally up. On the other hand, I feel like prices on this set are extremely depressed right now. I don't feel that the cards have seen enough major play to have accurate assessments of their worth. I wouldn't be surprised if, after a few weeks, the contents of this box would be worth more than the 100 dollars, particularly since nearly all of the mythics pulled were of significant value.
I think that even though you say cracking packs is bad, this is thing you most look forward to doing when a new set comes out. 36 packs back to back? Even if you're selling off the money cards, that feeling must be great.
Only reason I could see buying a box of this is for a chance at an expedition. Where as I would not buy one myself as a single, pulling a expo strip mine would land itself a pretty place in my binder not to be moved.
I have a friend who insists on buying boxes, rather just buying singles. (He also insists he will, one day, open his own store.) He has opened 5 boxes of OGW, and pulled 4 expeditions. He also pulled 3 or 4 expeditions from his 5-7 boxes of BFZ.
I feel like OWG will do better in the coming months once people figure out how to actually value some of the Eldrazi. Some of them feel dramatically undervalued right now and I'm anxious to see how Matter Reshaper does in CoCo decks this Modern season.
Take a moment to realize that in the first box you discarded over a handful of standard staples, which frankly should have been taken into account, especially since their value reduces the value of other cards. Yes, for the purpose of reselling on ebay they may not yield profit, but all those 1.75 $ cards you discounted can easily yield their full value, because they are NOT jank rares, but rather sought after cornerstones of popular decks. Sylvan advocate, Eldrazi mimic and ayli are all played as 3/4-offs in their respective decks, and things like stormchaser mage are highly sought after ;)
battle and oath are ok breaks if you break a case or 2 i did 2 of this one and did very well but you got to average the rares and the mythics and toss in a ex per case and figure your odds
I save up between sets little by little te get a box and a pre release. for this set I got the fat pack too just because I couldn't get the Bfz one. I got it for 35 so I guess it's worth it. but to me it's just really fun to open boosters. I get together with my friends and we just open them together. some day we will get to draft. but it's just fun
I'm surprised you didn't mention using PucaTrade to convert lower value cards to points that could be used to get other, possibly higher value, cards. I've recently started using the service after watching your video about it.
Well, you had every card worth something in the last box besides the planeswalkers, and even with them it would have been close. That's still quite a box!
I traded in some cards to my card shop and bought a box so the owners let me get two boxes fresh out of the case and I got an expedition Wasteland and Twilight Mire!
did you know that if you put an Expedite on an Eldrazi Devastator it looks like he's wearing pants. (you gotta kind of slide it up to his hip spike things)
Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch is Modern, so unless some of these cards find their way into Modern decks (like the Bx Eldrazi decks running around) I don't see how they'd get a boost from it. Maybe people will get really excited by a sweet draft deck?
Strange that I got an expedition in every box I bought. Three boxes, three expeditions (Cinder Glade, Forbidden Orchard, and (the real prize) Bloodstained Mire.)
+FrozenSpector I go to eBay, type in the card name, select BuyItNow, and sort from lowest to highest. I see whatever the lowest possible purchase price for the card is and list mine for a little less. That's how it sells right away.
With modern season around the corner and the recent bans of some modern cards, it could be fun to do another modern master 2015 booster box game. Not saying that you should but many of the cards in the set have skyrocketed in price since the banning of splinter twin.
Its ironic because, when I saw the price of the first Kozileks Return I paused to study the card and was like "that is a good card, but it isn't gamebreaking, that should be worth much less".
I juts opened up my first booster box from this set last night and pulled a Strip Mine Expedition Land and about 4 mythics and 9 foils in total. I'm just off my rocker xD!
+Nick Santillo (Nickywhat) Nice! Congrats!
The dream is real
I got 5 Booster packs after a draft for oath of the gatewatch and got an expedition and a kozeleks Return
+Sawyer McCullough kozileks return, mirrorpool, 2 storm chaser mages, and an ancient tomb exp in my fat pack :)
Congrats to everyone who pulled some fun or great cards and best of luck to those that didn't fare so well. Just in case people think I didn't pull one :p postimg.org/image/abjg61a1h/
I enjoyed watching your epic struggle for domination over that box, professor. Truly a tale for the ages.
Thank you Professor. I love this series. I love ALL YOUR VIDEOS. KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK
Chandra riding in to save the day like a true hero
So much fun! So much cheaper than buying a box yourself! A true community service.
Wooo!! I was waiting for this all week! :) Thanks Professor!!
Aside from gear reviews this has been my favorite regular part of the channel. Although I do really appreciate the creative new videos you have been making! Keep up the good work!
I'm actually glad people crack packs, if everyone would buy singles prices on everything would go up dramatically
Also, cracking packs can be quite fun.
I think this is the earliest I've been to a Tolarian video!
(raise hand) but profesor, the card "stormchaser mage" is worth more than 3 u$, even as an uncommon why not take it in accoun?
+Francisco Sampedro Somehow he never takes in account Unco and Commons. Even in KoT he didn't account for the Swiftspears (which were worth 3-4 dollars at that point iirc)
+Volvary well, he did take on acount any nonfoil "remand" for the mm2015 video, so there is my doubt. With it the last box may have been wort 100u$? That is what i want to know.
+Francisco Sampedro Only the foil is. The nonfoil is 2 dollars.
+Francisco Sampedro at the time of the making of these videos (the launch of Oath) stormchaser was not over 3 bucks I think
+spikybry it was, but i always forget that the profesor doesn't use scg prices
hokusai in the well of the great wave of kanagawa. love that artwork. a replica hangs up in a hallway at my place of employment.
I'm glad i got to watch someone play the booster box roulette so i don't have to play it myself to know how it feels.
Aaaaah, finally... One of the reasons why I am always excited about every new set ;)
I love these openings i get way more invested in what you pull lol
I just now realised how time consuming this is to edit, the intro/ outro are simple but having to look up the price for every rare and mythic he opens ouch. then you think about the 'physical' work that goes into it and the financial loss in doing this. as the rules are keep playing till you lose money

'' the true winner is always the House'' GREAT !

Hey professor! Thank you for spending so much money for our enjoyment!

I was waiting for this!!!
The best box I ever bought was a box of Japanese Origins from one of my LGSs. Paid normal English price but pulled a Nissa and 2 Jace's (one of which was foiled)
Another great video professor!
Good job opening box number 2. Takes some skill to do it in that time
Ooh. I like the music choice for the second part. Especially with the speed increased.
Even better than my pack 1 Ugin back in FRF prerelease.
This is pretty cool, but it is really easy to guess the number of boxes from the length of the video. You could just add a half an hour of blackness at the end of the less impressive Booster Box Games to leave the fun unspoiled :D
Now I really want to see someone make that five-colored Superfriends deck with the Oaths
If you're interested in doing it, it might be a good idea to do it again, because the GP has had quite a few cards go up in price.
The value of Eldrazi Mimic went up :)
Whoop whoop! I've been waiting for this.
A play set of Storm Chaser Mages would contribute a fair sum to the total, as would a few other of the uncommons of this set. I feel like I paid a lot more for my singles, but that's UK prices for you.
Try magiccardmarket.eu or look up the mtguk trading group on Facebook, we sell singles for 1/2 SCG value in pounds :)
Nah, sorry I grant I grumbled about the high UK prices but I'm loyal to Madhouse.
Ashley kitchin That's really silly.
TheIsaacMatthews It might just be a UK thing but here we generally don't dictate how others spend their money. It's considered a bit of a social foul.

They are 100%. I bought 10 booster boxes in battle for zendikar and didn't get one expedition. fucking bullshit.

One guy in my local game store opened an expedition and a Chandra in one single booster
I got the red/white filter land expedition out of one pack the other day. Then later I got Kalitas and world breaker!
love the clowns getting out of the car music
this set doesn't have a bunch of expensive cards, but at least 15 cards are seeing standard play, and within 2 weeks of release, 7-8 cards are seeing a lot of play in modern, and more seem like they could
im not sure why i enjoy these booster box games, but i do!
8:00 Chnadra and Reality Smash XD
got so lucky ^^ got 1 box. and got 1 horizon canopy expedition, 2 thought knox seer, chandra, and 3 other foil rares
I've been waiting impatiently for this to get posted, and I was extremely excited to see it was finally up. On the other hand, I feel like prices on this set are extremely depressed right now. yay new booster box game!
prof where did you get that wave mat? Thats one of my favorite paintings and would love to buy one of my own.
You could try inked playmats they have most designs you could want.
+Adam “ThatOneNerd” Billen thank you ^_^
All the anticipation of pack cracking without taking a match to my wallet. Lol.
in future booster box games you could put the number of packs opened in the top corner of the screen so you get an idea of how far through you are
I think a pack counter would make this even more exciting. Not sure if counting up or down would be better
nice new playmat!
I think that even though you say cracking packs is bad, this is thing you most look forward to doing when a new set comes out. 36 packs back to back? Even if you're selling off the money cards, that feeling must be great.
Always interesting to see just how many cards have their value cut in half by only a few days off release.
Only reason I could see buying a box of this is for a chance at an expedition. Where as I would not buy one myself as a single, pulling a expo strip mine would land itself a pretty place in my binder not to be moved.
Where did you get that wave playmat??? It looks gorgeous!
I have a friend who insists on buying boxes, rather just buying singles. (He also insists he will, one day, open his own store.) He has opened 5 boxes of OGW, and pulled 4 expeditions. He also pulled 3 or 4 expeditions from his 5-7 boxes of BFZ.
Nice double mythic pack.. Jealous of the Chandra pull.
I opened a BFZ booster last week I got Ulamog AND the bloodcrypt expedition
I feel like OWG will do better in the coming months once people figure out how to actually value some of the Eldrazi. Some of them feel dramatically undervalued right now and I'm anxious to see how Matter Reshaper does in CoCo decks this Modern season.
that kozilek's drop omfg
Is The Professor still doing streams on Twitch?
8:49
That's it Professor. I'm buying you a nice folding knife for you to keep in your pocket.
Man, I'd love a foil Chnadra. Chnadra is my favorite planewalker. Who wouldn't love a foil Chnadra, let's be honest.
Whoo, i got a fire-lit thicket in the first boostebox i have ever bought! It isn't the most valuable expedition, but at least i got one!!
Sylvan advocate, Eldrazi mimic and ayli are all played as 3/4-offs in their respective decks, and things like stormchaser mage are highly sought after ;)
You should add a tally to show up which pack of the box this is, so we can feel the suspense better along wiih you.
mina and denn may not be in the pro tour, BUT GUESS WHO IS MY NEW
COMMANDER
battle and oath are ok breaks if you break a case or 2 i did 2 of this one and did very well but you got to average the rares and the mythics and toss in a ex per case and figure your odds
This set is a singles set, the cards aren't too out of control price wise to just pick and choose which ones you need
It's basically the best thing to do with 100$.The only value in this block were the Expeditions.
From what I've seen, you're actually closer than you think, foil Expedite was close to $12 last I checked.
Double mythic pack, good stuff :) Foil plains too, why not haha (not same pack)
I got a Graven Cairns out of a Fatpack. Have you ever thought of doing a Fatpack game?
I'm surprised you didn't mention using PucaTrade to convert lower value cards to points that could be used to get other, possibly higher value, cards. I've recently started using the service after watching your video about it.
Well, you had every card worth something in the last box besides the planeswalkers, and even with them it would have been close.
That's still quite a box!
Kozilek's Return has gone back up since then.
To think, he pulled a near playset of Eldrazi Mimics between the two boxes... They've increased ten-fold in value.
Is that playmat from the classic art tokens project?
+WilhelmScreamer It is indeed! Video on that coming soon!
I traded in some cards to my card shop and bought a box so the owners let me get two boxes fresh out of the case and I got an expedition Wasteland and Twilight Mire!
that double mythic pack!
did you know that if you put an Expedite on an Eldrazi Devastator it looks like he's wearing pants. (you gotta kind of slide it up to his hip spike things)
Please play the booster box game again with Oath with the new prices!
I cant stop listening to this music .... im in trance X_X
What do you use to edit these videos?
I noticed the Eldrazi Mimic went up in price. I guess the mimic ain't a junk rare anymore, it's got value!
oh wow that foil Chandra :3
Pro Tour Oath of the Gatewatch is Modern, so unless some of these cards find their way into Modern decks (like the Bx Eldrazi decks running around) I don't see how they'd get a boost from it. Maybe people will get really excited by a sweet draft deck?
Professor I stopped at the foil Chandra I got one to at prerelease it's beautiful
Do you ask for shipping confirmation at the post office? How much does shipping cost in total for 1 card?
