The Worst Vintage Synth Ever To Sound

  • In this video I try my hardest to make the 70s (I think) "Superior" organ synth thingy sound as pleasant as possible in a music context. I like it.. but I don't like that I like it. Or maybe I don't like it, but don't like that I don't like it. Or Id just like to like it!

      Set it next to a Casio SK-1, and activate the SK-1’s sample feature.
      Kidding.

    Instantly reminded of the stylaphone, from the over all look of it, the form factor I suppose and sounds pretty similar to, I really love the very noise vocals, works well. Was thinking a virtual instrument playing sounds entirely from the mechanical keys squeaking would be interesting

    I used mine as a bass, and organ (through a lot of pedals) in the 70's! Have it on a lot of old reel to reel sound on sound tunes.

  • @DanielAilling
    @DanielAilling ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I have the same organ(?) but it's branded as a WOC100. I thought it was broken until I heard yours. Love that you managed to make something with it, I've just kept mine as an oddity but you've inspired me. Love your work.

      Maybe look into replacing some of the capacitors. If it has electrolytic capacitors, it's probably worth changing those for new ones

  • @turhiki
    @turhiki ปีที่แล้ว +10

    That's a nice little synth. If I had to guess, I'd say that maybe it's all the failing components that give it's sound its cool quirkyness.

    In regards to the question of "what makes a synthesizer": I think it's the ability to design your own sounds.

      @SimonTheMagpie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, organs usually have some timbre control, especially electric organs like the hammond are basically additive synthesizers with the drawbars allowing you to play around with the harmonics. Very few organs have envelope controls though, they tend to just be on when the key is pressed and off when you let go of the key, though that's not quite true for 100% of them either, as some electric organs have a short decay envelope for upper partials creating the percussive organ sound, and some have release controls.

    Good stuff magpie. You should look at making an IR of that speaker then attempting DI through your IR. Might be interesting to have some IRs of your older synths/etc as well.

    That's a Stylophone innards with a "proper" keyboard. Even the board layout is the same by the look of it.
    Even has the crusty "note not quite connecting" sound.
    If you really want to capture sound without the key squeak, you could relocate the speaker somewhere externally.

    Sounds like the tone generator was of a type that eventually made its way into the Nintendo Gameboy. Preferring its speaker over the output reminds me of what I read about the EDP Wasp and how Dave Stewart placed a mic up to *its* speaker in the studio.
