This was so helpful! I feel like a lot of beginning banjo videos are too basic, whereas this showed how the bare basics transform into something spectacular.
Super video Steve, look forward to the melody off of chords, as a beginner thats just the thing i need to focus on. So well explained. Thanks for your time and effort. Linda
Hi again, Steve. Back for more. I'm wondering if you can point me to a video or provide some additional instruction on gradually going from practicing chord changes with a simple one-finger strum to doing so while completing the full frailing strum. This is where I'm at currently. I can strum away with one finger and change chords but as soon as I attempt to frail, my brain (muscle memory) isn't there. Any tips are appreciated. Working on Lazy John every day!
Hi Robert, I recommend focusing on the basic frailing strum first, as that'll be your foundation. Once you can do that in your sleep, start dropping chords in. Patrick Costello has a whole series of great videos that focus on the fundamentals with songs like Boil 'em Cabbage Down. I've made a few here and there too, if I can find one, I'll post a link. Keep on frailing!
Steel. I'm using those rust free elixir strings because I don't change my strings often enough. That warm tone probably has more to do with the texture of my fingernail. I grow it out just a bit to get a clean strike. Also practicing striking the string at that sweet spot helps.

Nice melody you made up there on the beggining. How about a tab on that one?
Steve show us the right hand
What kind of banjo is that?
Greg Poruban this one’s my Vega Senator 🪕
Steve Harrison Very nice. Do you know much about Cedar Mountain Banjos? I’m thinking about getting one.
Hi, is your 4th string Nylgut or are you running all steel? Many thanks.
