This video is the best one out there. Clearly showing differences between models AND what all the tools are actually for. No distracting music. No annoying narration. 10/10 !
I've carried my Spartan for 30+ years. It's been invaluable. My dad always carried a pocket knife, so I do, too. It's not as common for us women, but it should be. I'm a firm believer that everyone should carry a good quality pocket knife.
I am women, too. I also everyday carry knife last ~15 years. Now I am carrying 2- 3 knives in one time. My Leatherman's small multitool Squirt PS4 as a keychain tool works almost every day. Finger nail file, bottle opener and small knife helps me. If I need biger blade or biger scisors, in my backpack is the Victorinox Compact. Sometimes I add the Victorinox Signature Lite- there are LED light and nice, sharp small scissors, but not so proper blade, as my Leatherman's Squirt.
Have owned a Swiss Champ for nearly 30 years and it has literally traveled the World 🌎 with me. I have used every tool, some tools are more used than others like both knife blades, scissors, pliers, magnifying loop, tweezers, cork screw, flat and Philips-head screw drivers - don’t forget the mini screw driver on the corkscrew, and the can and bottle openers. While some may chuckle and call me McGyver, this tool has proven itself invaluable over the years. They make wonderful presents to give at Christmas and birthdays.
my grandpa always carries a swiss army knife, and I grew up thinking it was the coolest thing ever. I'm turning 20 this year and I'm thinking it's finally time for me to get a knife of my own. great video! thanks :)
I bought a field master because of your videos. I didn’t realize these knives were so useful and versatile. Thanks for posting these, if not for them I wouldn’t have gotten this awesome tool.
Cool, I just ordered one of these. I've carried 2 and 3 layer SAK's since the mid 90's but this will be the first 4 layer one I've owned. I always figured I never needed one, but have become accustomed to carrying a classic on my keys, and one with a saw in my pocket. Problem is, when I go fishing or backcountry I dont like to take my keys.
Thank you! Finally a video that shows the tools in practice! all other videos are guys just talking...who probably don't use or have never used half the tools they review. Thank you from California!
I have been using the Camper for years as my EDC. For me it is right on the limit when it comes to size and thickness to through in my pocket every single day! It does everything I need in 99% of the cases of daily uses.
After 20+ years of carrying the Camper I just realized that it fits perfectly in the fifth pocket if most of my jeans. Love it. Also the bottle opener is the best tool for putting back a bicycle chain on the gear.
I started carrying a Climber back in the late 70’s or so. It’s been used on three continents and the scissors have cut about a mile of moleskin to patch my blistered feet. Great knife!
I’ve carried a tinker for about 13 years. Probably the best for urban edc with all the good screwdriver options. For me, the models with corkscrews are better for outdoors/hiking/camping/hunting.
After seeing the Felix Immler video where he used an SAK to open wine and the LEAST muscling method he gave didn't even use the corkscrew I'm at the point where I'm saying the corkscrew models aren't even best if you're a friggin sommelier. Why people defend that useless corkscrew at all is beyond me.
Love the video and production value! None of them have the magnifying glass, which is priceless because it makes me feel like a kid again every time I open it. But the Ranger is a powerhouse. The chisel pairs with the Leatherman Rebar bit adapter, allowing the Ranger to be used with 1/4" bits. Also, the position of the hook in relation to the key ring allows for Felix Immler's t-shank saw trick. Pretty much everything you need except pliers. Enter small Knipex pliers or maybe small Leatherman/SOG pliers (I like the discontinued SOG Synch 1 Travel).
The great thing about Swiss Army Knives is that whatever set tools you think you’ll need, there’s likely to be a model that provides it. My everyday knife is a Pioneer, mainly just because I love the look and feel of the metal scales. I’d like to put in a mention for the Sportsman too. I take it on hiking or cycling trips when I appreciate it for the more compact size and the built in nail file.
I wish they made a pioneer with the large and small blades and the bottom tools. For quite some time my go to tools are the scissors, small blade, andmawl. But I like the Pioneer X's better blade. 🤨
I carried a Farmer for over a decade, and loved it, then I almost had it confiscated while going into a hockey game. After that I decided to use something a little less dear, so I switched to a Hiker. Gotta say... while the Alox has more mojo the small blade, toothpick/ tweezers, and Philips are sure handy.
For about 15 years now the SwissChamp has been my EDC. Once you get used to the size you don't even notice it anymore. When I go out into the woods I always have my Rangergrip 78. I like the larger blade and saw. But all my survival kits and bags have either a Camper or Huntsman for a back-up.
I modded my ranger with plus scales, added a pen, 2 pins, little screwdriver in corkscrew. The troubleshooter was also one of my favorite models, it's sad that they don't make them anymore.
I have a Crafsman with plus scales, which I managed to find a few years ago as a discontinued model. Basically a Ranger but with pliers and a Phillips in place of the corkscrew.
Got a Ranger for my son. Liked it so much I had to get one for myself too. Just wish it had a locking blade or even better they made it larger like the Outrider.
Great comparison. The Ranger is a favorite for sure. I have a Huntsman which is kind of in between the Climber and Ranger. Recently picked up a 85mm S557 and that little knife is quite loaded up with also a locking blade. The larger 111mm WorkChamp is probably my favorite camping/outdoor oriented knife.
I love your channel. The Huntsmen and Cybertool L are what I consider the best SAKs, though I also love my Ranger Grip 79 and my Nail Clip 580. None of which I use as an EDC, my Classic has that position though I plan on replacing it with a Signature Lite Onyx Black. I intend on modifying the bottle opener of my Huntsmen and RG 79 from a screwdriver to a chisel and the under belly into a ferro rod scraper. The bottle opener is useless and a chisel has more use than a screwdriver for bushcrafting, which is where I use these knives. I've added a SAK pen and a ferro rod to my RG 79 in the channel that holds the can opener and the bottle opener. The leaver arm of my Nail Clip 580 I also intend on modifying into a cuticle pusher, making it the complete nail care tool.
Don't quite agree. Instead of the Camper model, it is better to take the Mountiner, in which a saw for metal (which can almost always replace a saw for wood, has a sharp part at the tip for small Phillips screws) and scissors. In terms of functions, it will be almost like Ranger, but lighter. Among two-row models, Compact also is better ( if need can put bosh saw under hook)
The magnifying glass on my Champion Plus is great for reading fine print on my phone screen. It is amazing that screen resolution is so good now that we can do this. I remember when color CRT displays came out for computers in the 80's and the pitch between phosphor dots was measured in mm. A monochrome screen was easier on the eyes.
I just ordered one of these, been carrying a Hiker forever and finally decided to try a 4 layer. I dont consider myself a "tech guy" but between working in the trades, living on an acreage, and being in the bush constantly it seems to be the logical choice.
The only thing the cork screw is good for is holding tinder. Unless you’re stranded in the swiss alps with a wine bottle and new girl friend LOL. Love your videos Bro! I have a really good survival kit and have been considering adding a Victorinox to it. I have room so in your opinion which model should I add? I need to do another homemade survival kit video on the one I have. Would love to hear opinions on which model I could add.
For 50 years I avoided the corkscrew because I don't drink. I had a Tinker and then a Craftsman. Last year I moved to the Champion Plus (because I didn't want the bulk of the pliers and I always have a Knipex Cobra or Leatherman Wave. The corkscrew has actually won my heart because it will loosen knots. I love cordage and rope and good knots and splices, but I really hate random misplaced knots. The toothpick has been replaced with a Firefly ferrocerium fire lighter.
@@grantdavis5992 The little hook on the can opener is great for loosening knots. As is the Awl. And hook. To the OP; I EDC a Fieldmaster, and keep a hatchet, pliers, and diamond stone in my day pack. I'm constantly in the bush, and between those tools there are very few backcountry problems that cant be solved.

You didn't mention the wire stripper notch on the bottle opener tool. I have seen it mentioned but I have never seen it demonstrated. Very nice comparison though.
The Victorinox Ranger is the beast SAK , ir haves all anyone can need . I have since a lot of time and is very useful , ir has a lost of tools and is not heavy . The beat Swiss Army Knives for pocket , edc , and any Work in the Wild.
Ideal things in a swiss army knife: Large blade, can opener, flat screwdiver, phillips screwdriver, scissors, sat nav, internet, photocopier, tool for getting boy scouts out of horse's hooves.
I have 5 SAK's. I prefer the Compact for EDC and the Handyman for long hiking trips. The Compact also has scisdors, nail file, hook and pen. The difference between Ranger and Handyman: the Handyman has pliers, the Ranger has not.

@MSkachenite The Victorinox Pliers are not that useful like People Think. They are madre for small Jobs and works. The wire cutter in the Pliers are kind of tint and bad , i cut a office clip and the Pliers stop working well. They are good, but not at Pliers
@@Jack-pb6rh The Victorinox pliers always are stronger as my two finger touch. :) But my Vic's Handyman's pliers has no wire cuters. At least, I don't see them. If I need wire cuters, I also carry as a keychain tool the Leatherman Squirt PS4. That wire cutters works well.

I have a five layer VSA I bought 30 years ago and, even though I was (and still am) into wine, I deliberately chose it for the crosshead screwdriver in place of the corkscrew.

For that reason I much prefer the Hiker to the camper, even though I feel the spine mounted driver is of limited use. On multiple occasions, in a pinch, I have trimmed an appropriately sized stick, and used the stick to drive the cork into the bottle.
What ??? "The top winmakers" ??? Every good wine in France has a cork !! A corkscrew is therefore an essential element. Otherwise you carry a corkscrew separately!
I have the Ranger. I changed the scales to white plus scales and added the tiny screwdriver to the corkscrew. I also have a Swiss Champ in black and an Alox Farmer that I carry in my wallet.
I'm sorry I'm just not interested in ever having a SAK without the can opener. I know the situation doesn't come up a lot, but it fits the bill of "if I need to do X thing, can I fudge the job with another tool?" Where it is just indispensable
I cant be the only one who packs a can of beans or Alphagetti when I'm headed into the bush? I use that can opener all the time, and that little screwdriver nub on the end is truly an engineering marvel. The one thing you overlooked was the small pinhole behind the corkscrew. [More valuable than people would think].
I put a pin with a large round plastic head in that spot. The original fell out.
I bought a Swiss army knife 48 years ago when I joined the Canadian army and still carry it with me to this day.

Nothing but the Swisschamp makes sense.
I've had a lot of victorinox but now I am a fan of a Makita blue multitool gear. Very good.
I sold these for years, and the Huntsman has always seemed the best balanced go to me.
Agreed.
Since the Huntsman is the only Vik I own 2 models of I guess it is my #1 choice too!
I have the Handyman. I am always interested to see new uses for all the tools. It’s a great knife.
I prefer the Compact. Only two layers but a lot of functionality to include a pen and scissors
Cool video, the chisel is nice. I do like a pair of pliers also like on the deluxe tinker.
I've had a swiss champ for 26 years, never let me down
Don't forget about the pin hole compartment under the corkscrew
The "Explorer" has a side opening phillios head driver and magnifying glass. My go to!
My favorite is the explorer, never leave home without it.
That model is really overpriced - more so than other SAKs.
I'm missing the Fieldmaster. Highly versatile pocket knife!
I love my Huntsman.
Really appreciate the demonstration clips.
I ended up with the HIKER and added the needle (which comes very handy as a SIM-pin)
I modded my ranger with plus scales, added a pen, 2 pins, little screwdriver in corkscrew.
The troubleshooter was also one of my favorite models, it's sad that they don't make them anymore.
I found one at a local Pawnshop. I had the scales changed to a translucent green. [I Love The Way It Looks Now!] BEAUTIFUL KNIFE!!
I upgraded my Ranger to white plus scales and added the tiny screwdriver to the corkscrew. It looks stunning in white 👌
For me, my favourite SAK combination for my EDC is Farmer X and Deluxe Tinker..so far
I have a Crafsman with plus scales, which I managed to find a few years ago as a discontinued model. Basically a Ranger but with pliers and a Phillips in place of the corkscrew.
I still have a Craftsman I bought in 1985, apparently before the pliers were added.
I love my Fieldmaster. Four layer, regular philips instead of a corkscrew and a wood saw.
That's what I carry. Phillips is much handier than a corkscrew.
I agree I've never needed a cork screw
Got a Ranger for my son. Liked it so much I had to get one for myself too. Just wish it had a locking blade or even better they made it larger like the Outrider.
Evolution S range have locking blades. Ergonomic, but a bit smaller, and obviously a different range of functions.

The same and for me (ranger).
not sure why you don't consider the Huntsman!?
I carry an Huntsman for over twentyfive years now. For me the best EDC. For work I use a Forester.
I added to my Ranger the Plus Scales with the pen and the fire ant. It’s my all time favorite.
Ranger + Camper + Climber + pliers = Handyman ! :)
Camper + Climber = Huntsman

The field master is a must for technical guys because of the Philips screwdriver.

I think Compact, Huntsman and SwissChamp could be a better choice to this video title.
I bought my camper in 1978 and still have it. It cost around £4.50 of the time.
You didn't mention the wire stripper notch on the bottle opener tool. I have seen it mentioned but I have never seen it demonstrated. Very nice comparison though.
Joe: he has a video showing the wire stripper ...
The only thing the Ranger needs is a 3 dimensional Phillip's screwdriver.
It has three pieces with which you can unscrew the Philips screws. One on the can opener, one on the back, one on the tip of the metal saw.

Super Tinker, as you can enter most airlines w/o the corkscrew and blade below 6 cm
