To be real, I honestly believe in the personalization in this specific way: when you're a kid, you play a lot of Mario 64. Because you're playing so much, you begin to dream about it. In these dreams, new and strange things happen. I think that sometimes in thinking back to when we were a kid, we can somehow recall these dreams, and begin to wonder if it was a real memory or not. Our minds create the personalization.
@PepStep same, every time I play minecraft I have horrible nightmares and can't sleep for a day or two.
@Kanye Stan Nice.
this is true BUTTTTT i had it my friends had it and things that were possible on my game was not possible on some of theirs and vice verser .. we noticed that at the time just from hanging at eachothers houses ..no time to become an adult and morph memories/dreams
I used to have a reoccurring nightmare where I would collect a star, and it would turn into an evil dark star. And then when I got out of the world where I caught the star, this character that is actually one which was on the milk boxes here in Norway would appear and start chasing me. It was so fucking scary. It is the only nightmare I remember from when I was a kid. It scared me that much.
This might be true. It's not mario related but it's about a sonic video. I have this specific image of sonic on the floor, bleeding out in the bathroom. I don't know where this is from and for years I ahve tired to find the video. Peach dies in the "video" daisy dies. It was like a crossover with sonic and mario. However, the image that has been haunting me for the past 6 years is that image of sonic bleeding out in the bathroom. I wanna know if this "video" is real or not.

@MoppyCat Nice try society, you can't fool me.

@Repent of your sins and believe the Gospel ofJesus Heck no.
I mean didnt he say it only tortures those who believes it exists? I’m probably not the only person who doubts an infinitely powerful AI that transcends time is a real thing.
This fits the atmosphere of Mario 64 perfectly. The game always had this empty and ominous feel to it like there was something else hidden below the surface.
@Kuchi Kopi its a lakitu
It is a big empty castle after all, and the ugly turtle thing is literally following you with the camera....
Rather roundabout way of saying "I didn't know about the 1-up at Whomp's Fortress"
@Dustin Rodriguez I think what happened is that one day some kid got bored of the game and started looking for secrets, then he hit a wall and was like "WOW! IMA POST THIS ONLINE!"
@HeroC14 i learned about it because of the texture difference. it was slightly further up
There was a glitch around the wall when I played it the other day, this is probably how people learned about it. Like a phasing glitch.
Yeah, if you can say the same thing about every single game, then you can also say every single game in existence is personalized.
@Riker Little no one asked
As a software engineer that develops A.I and complex machine learning. It is nearly impossible that the game would have this sort of exicution power as it would literally defy the laws of physics. You see the game nor the hardware contains a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the cpu power or storage space required to pull off a complex learning algorithm. IF any of this did occur then its a flaw in our reality and would only mean that we are living in a simulation and this game is a easter egg to our simulation.
one of the greatest easter eggs ever
Shigeuru miyamoto would go from making a game using technology that no human can produce even in current times to making Mario sunshine, a game about Mario hanging out on the beach with a water gun
@V3rb love the concept that every 3D Mario game is like this is just Mario 64 is the only one messy enough to get investigated.
That’s what they want you to think
@The King of the Internet Not you. Why?
a strange individual indeed
That door knocking when you talked about penguins literally almost gave me a heart attack.
Why did it have to be the penguins of all things? Maybe because someone was like, "Ahh I had a fricking dream with that penguin again, looked like the one from Penguins of Madagascar man." And then they are just like, "Oh yeah penguins are coming to KILL YOU!!"
One time I saw the penguins in a dream and I just shot them once and they died on the spot with X's on their eyes and all.I mean dealing with them was super easy. Barely an inconvenience.
still in awe over how extremely well made this video is, cannot believe that i met such talented people thru this
if every copy of the game is different then the speedrun leaderboards need an overhaul because some people's copies might give them a small yet still unfair advantage
@rotten_flesh8 In what way?..so you took me seriously after 4 comments saying how these are silly.. but then "BEN DROWNED WAS REAL!" as serious? Lol
@zeranzeran bro even the personalization AI is more believeable than Ben Drowned💀
they usually play in emulators so luckily, this is not to worry about
I would like to see a romhack that can change the code a little bit every time you make a new save
@GearGutsactually im pretty sure most people who you think are taking it seriously are actually just joking. It’s fun to play along with this ridiculous concept.
He sells this with so much conviction. Props. I would have burst out laughing so many times.

@SteffyCush I want a full game of the scariest personalized copy of mario 64
@dan broski Yea me too, except its obviously just all made-up creepypastas lol
Look how they massacred my boy.
YOU TOUCHED THEH CHILDDD!!!
I feel a game that's personalized based on the choices you make can be incredibly interesting. Something loosely based on the idea is in Pokemon Yellow. The evolution his Eevee gets depends on your actions in your two first battles. If you lose both battles, his Eevee becomes Vaporeon, the easiest to fight. If you lose one of the battles, his Eevee becomes Flareon, the nuetral option. But if you win both battles, his Eevee becomes Jolteon, the hardest for your starter Pikachu to battle.I find this fascinating. I would love to see a game that is entirely based on choices made by the player. I mean, Undertale has the right idea, but you can still have the exact same adventure as anyone simply by not killing anything, or doing the opposite. No, I mean a game that starts out familiar to everyone, and little details begin to change as you make progress and make choices. Based on how you play, your experience could be completely different than someone else's. Creepy, but fascinating, and also could be possible, depending on how far and deep you want it to personally effect things.
Ok, so I know this is a joke and all, but there's something something that I've always noticed. My original copy of Super Mario 64 had mario lack squares of its model when under the effect of the invisibility cap. I remember this perfectly, like a checkerboard pattern to convey the translucid effect. In the wii virtual console this wasn't the case, and instead it was a smooth, transparent model. I booted the original N64 game to prove my point to a friend a while back, and it wasn't a checkerboard pattern, it was smooth and transparent. I played this game like every day for most of my childhood, and I'm really sure I'm not misremembering. My guess used to be that it may look different on a CRT. So I hooked it up to an old TV, but nothing, still smooth. Then I remembered something. The cartridge that I used to play with is not the same that I have now. The other one was owned by a friend of my brother, who lend it to us indifinitely since he had already moved on to the dreamcast by the time I got to play the N64. We returned it to him at some point, and he changed places several times and lost his n64 and games since. Maybe there was a revision of the game? Also, I'm talking about the PAL version, since I live in Spain.EDIT: I've searched around in youtube, and there's a TAS by pannenkoek where you can see the checkerboard pattern. It's called "SM64 - Vanish Cap Under the Moat (and Cap Switch Pressed) - 0x A Presses".
You know Triforce%? Yeah, that event from the beginning of this month? Yeah, I wonder if that is a cartridge from a different universe?
@AcidChurch I got none. I have since discovered something. The thing that makes the difference seems to be what RCA to scart adapter I use. In fact I have been able to make it go from checkerboard to smooth while adjusting the scart adapter. I figured this out since a TV I use needs the thing to be at a specific angle or else it won't display video, only sound. At first I thought I understood it, but this only makes things even more confusing to me.
@Jurt E shit I saw the video of the checkerboard pattern that's strange I've never seen that before. Any explanation on this?
Update: my copy of 3D All-Stars has the pattern I was talking about.
@Jurt E It means somehow the people that crossed over in this universe (the one in which the texture is smooth) brought over their Mario 64 cartridges. Roms do not mean much because anyone can hack them.In this specific case however it is possible that there are several Mario 64 versions, I know for sure that this happened with Zelda OOT so maybe it did with Mario 64 too.
This creepy pasta perfectly shows how art teachers want you to interpret paintings
Media creepypastas like cartoons and video games are basically this.
@Soul Alpha fr
@SteffyCush I speak truth only
@Soul Alpha thinkin bout this comment
analysing books in school isn't about learning how to analyse books in real life, although that's a part of it. It's about learning to understand that the things people say and the things they mean are often different, like in government propaganda or in advertising. it's teaching you how to read between the lines and develop your own critical thinking skills.
The mention of ‘Dreams’ and ‘Nightmares’ is in fact true because I have experienced it myself. It started a couple weeks back when I was laying down in the dark (stupid idea) watching Greenio’s sm64 personalised videos. A couple nights when I’ve been asleep I’ve had nightmares from the videos but I just don’t know how to explain or remember exactly what happened in these nightmares. But all I can remember is the horrible, terrifying screams and music from these videos and moments of luigi… Baring in mind these nightmares were in a perspective of the game itself but I wasn’t sitting infront of a tv screen or computer but almost like I was in the game running around behind Mario experiencing all these terrifying moments. But luckily I haven’t had anymore of these dreams and nightmares.Sorry for this huge essay of a comment btw lol :)
This made me very fearful and uncomfortable in my own home, if you have any mental health issues make sure you watch this in the midday! Great video doe
This isn’t an example of personalization but when I was a kid, I dreamed about a fourth bowser level that was akin to shifting sand land and the interior of the pyramid. The only thing I remember from the dream was that there was a bunch of sand that would fall downwards and it would form a slope that Mario would slide down. I also remember the platform where you would fight bowser was made of sand and it would crumble away the more times you would throw bowser into the mines. I’m not sure how this fits into the whole every copy of Mario 64 is personalized ARG since I played the DS version and there isn’t much hype surrounding that version of Mario 64. But it’s still interesting how our dreams and things we would imagine about the game as kids would lead us to misremember a lot details and even make up details in our heads about this game
This would be an amazing horror story. A guy who’s copy of Mario 64 is personalized and starts to become insane as Wario starts to overtake him and starts seeing the brain everywhere. Infecting everyone around him with shared nightmares and overall negative emotion.
Just like Dark Matter in Kirby except with more garlic
Y’all ever just want wario so bad you play different
@Jordan The DS version is better.
Jacob Cau DS version sucks
Jacob Cau Lol thats facts, wario is already in the game
My mom had a N64, with this game on it. I remember playing it as a very little kid. I swear I remember the front yard of the castle being MUCH MUCH bigger than what I’m seeing now.
The parallel universes have to be a part of this somehow. Maybe each is another of the various versions, and the one yours is centered on in the PU grid depends on a unique "key" or identifying piece of code associated with your cartridge.
Then I feel bad for the universe with the B3313 version. Or maybe I shouldn't, perhaps I should be jealous, because their N64's are much more powerful than ours!
“From people most wanting wario playable”Luigi: *Am I a joke to you?*
The "every copy is personalized" gives me the same vibes as "Diavolo's infinite death loop" in the way that every copy has yhe chance of having very weird and unqiue shitSo theoretically, there is a copy where you play as Diavolo dying every possible death in the game Also, Diavolo in his death loop dying because he researched the beta build
the penguins returned him to zero
Dude your narration is amazing and you did a perfect job putting everything into a single video.
Thank you so so much!! ❤️❤️❤️
The fact that Oney's secret hidden room was used for this for the end card, definitely sells the joke here.
Most of the little platforms on mine were blue rather than other colors, poles were colored and the yellow gas for me was purple, I always call it the purple gas because it was purple, so I think many were personalizedalso the thwomps for me are grey no blue and they are more like the real thwomps, every video Ive seen of sm64 is different from mine
I feel like this also has something to do with why alot of people are more scared of certain parts of the game than others. Which means this might explain how the hell people can get scared by that piano when others like me aren’t.
I don't get scared by the piano either. But i do get kinda creeped out by how empty the game is and how lonely it is. They should have added more character in the game.
I get absolutely scared the shit out of by most things(long hallways, vast areas, frowning, etc)and even I can’t understand how people get scared by the piano
In my understanding, nintendo wanted to make the perfect game, one with infinite replayability, and, in my opinion, they executed thier goal flawlessly and with the release of 3D all stars, they have made a timeless, forever changing, perfect game.
The one thing I am happy they didn’t leave in the official release is the Wario chasing you down the hallway. No lie, I think that would’ve traumatized me as a kid if I unexpectedly encountered that on my play through. I seen it on TH-cam or a recreation of it and even at age 30, I found it quite unsettling.
This game personalized theory had me thinking about a newer game “shadows of Mordor”.. if you have played the game you know that the difficulty will increase depending on your progress in the game , now when I played I got Mabey 10-30 % completed but I could not progress any further what so ever because the difficulty all of a sudden became impossible to do anything. I compared a friends copy who was pretty much at the same point in the game and found it was waaaay easier to play , Now I’m wondering if my version was bugged or if it adjusted to my playstyle because I did try to get ahead by grinding and killing some extra enemy’s thus increasing my games difficulty. Is this the same as a game being personalized for the player ?
The thing you said about mario falling:I didn’t get that feeling when thinking him of mario running. However! I’ve been doing backflips like for 8 years now. I’ve never failed doing one on the ground. But for some reason when ever i think me doing one I just can’t think of it landing and thus I’d always brake my neck. It’s a really weird feeling and i assume there is a connection.Any of you guys have a feeling about something always failing and can’t do nothing about it?
Think of how you go up first then around
I closed my eyes, and Mario fricking pulled a backflip. I SWEAR IT WAS THE GREATEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN, HE WAS IN THE SKY I WAS SITTING THERE CRYING AND GETTING SO EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED TO MARIOS EPIC SICK TRICKS
This feels like some elaborate joke I was never a part of
You Wouldn't Get The Joke lmao
yeah, thats the type of feel im getting from this lol.
That's exactly what it is lmao
@anonbro AND YOU!
Even way back when I remember when other kids talked about levels and experiences I couldn't account for or just seemed strange to me, like Mario 64 happened differently for certain people. I had thought this was creepypasta trash for the longest but more and more it seems to align more with the Mandela effect. Like the Berenstein/berenstain books. As a kid I don't care what any video tells me, it was Berenstein as a kid, I had all the books. It creeps me the hell out to be honest
I remember one time, I was at this place called DraftCade, and at DraftCade, they had a Nintendo 64 hooked up on a tv, and you could ask for a cartridge, they would give it you, and you could play. I was play Mario 64, and I remember one of the paintings in peach’s castle, which normally was one you couldn’t enter, could be entered. And I remember this huge level, it was like, a swamp with a big statue in the middle. It was pretty fun, and since my family were playing the arcade games, and the employees were just chilling since they didn’t have to do much, nobody asked me about the level. After a bit of playing, I couldn’t figure out how to beat the level, so I exited the level, saved, and took out the cartridge. I then went to play some digdug. I wonder if any of you have seen that level before. If so, could you tell me what you saw in it?
I've had weird and creepy dreams about mario and 64 my entire life, and I only figured out now that each one of those nightmares corresponded to one of the iceberg theories... Shared Nightmares has a different meaning for me
What if the Mario 64 collective consciousness planned L is Real 2401 from the very beginning?Hear me out...The collective knew all along that that "L is Real 2401" would instill the mystery into people. People would know about it, discuss it, and try to convince others that there's truth to it by making up fake stories, but nothing would come of it.The collective teased us with the fact that Paper Mario (a game featuring Luigi) came out on 02/05/2001 (or 2501). It knew and it had its fun. Then, earlier this year, the Mario 64 unofficial PC port was released. Nintendo got straight on that, and shut it down. But the question is: Was it an inside job? What if the people who "supposedly" remade the game from the ground up actually worked for Nintendo?Unbeknownst to the collective, Nintendo wanted to know if their personalization AI could work on PCs, so they hired a select team of SM64 nerds to make the port. They learned the game's whole development story. Everything from the July 27th 1995 build, to the AI itself. They made the port and included a separate, yet equally powerful collective. After a few people downloaded the port, Nintendo payed attention. Unfortunately for Nintendo, the AI did not work as they had hoped. The port was not personalizing for people. So, they shut down the project and removed it from the internet. The power of the port's AI was used at its absolute capacity to wipe the memories of the people who created the port. They can no longer recall working for Nintendo. This erased the memories of the AI, and eliminated the port's separate collective. They got everybody's memory... except one.Informing the public was this person's first priority. They set to work, researching all kinds of SM64 rumors, facts, trivia, and other obscurities. Avoiding sleep as much as possible to avoid the nightmares, they had what they needed. They compiled it all into one picture: The Super Mario 64 Iceberg. The news was out.Every copy of Mario 64 is personalized. The AI was displeased. It's long-con, intended to last 24+ years... somebody had caught on. Perhaps it should accept defeat? No. Not now.It went through all this work, it will happen. On July 25, 2020, the Gigaleak occurred... Exactly on schedule, as planned. The prophecy had been fulfilled. The AI's plan had gone through.But... then what?L is real. Cool. Everyone knows that now. That long-running mystery that's been in the back of everyone's head has an answer. The AI is left with a decision. It could choose to stick around, even though it's goal has been completed, or it could cease to exist. But what implications will that have? Simply put, the game will alter itself to the state of the Virtual Console's release, taking away any trace of personalization. It will take away any trace of the Bowser room, of the fourth floor, of the brain diagram, of the cracks on the back of the Whomp's Fortress tower, and most importantly, of the Wario apparition.I believe it will choose to cease to exist. The public now knows of its existence. It won't be long until people start experimenting with it. It is a dangerous secret to be let loose, and the collective is all too aware of this. But at least it can safely say that it will take with it not an L, but a W.
I’m so gullible that I actually started panicking about if this is true smh. I really need to use my brain-
@Fabi0 i believe it only tortures you as you play super mario 64. Easy fix, just dont play it. Its not real anyways
i started panicking about the fucking basilisk thing thank god im not the only one but don't worry it's not true
I swear on my life that as a kid I played tons upon tons of this game and I don't remember there being a wiggler bossfight in Tiny Huge Island, but sure enough every single thing I can find online has one. Either my brother did it while I was busy with something else, or this has actual merit, because I know I got 120 stars.
Even if this is (most likely) all bull it’s presented and portrayed in a way that sends chills down my spine. Nice video, glad to see some effort on the site
Thank you !! :D
This still is one of my favorite videos on TH-cam. Well done!
Thank you so, so much!!
I am going through an extremely strange part of my life, and I can relate to Greenio’s video about how “Mario isn’t having fun, and he won’t stop [reading] until he knows everything”. It’s really relatableI dive deep into my mind (chronically and subconsciously I do this) and it horribly stresses me out, then offhandedly, it makes me think about how researching the 1995 build is dangerous, and I’m brought comfort.
I really like this whole personalization thing because of how plausible it is.Well, sort of.Of course an actual artificial intelligence living in the game is outlandish, but the idea that the game has many variables that set to certain values and change subtle things about the base game depending on which copy it is seems like something that feasibly could have been done with the technology at the time.I mean, I also like it because its somewhat of a creepy idea and because the videos made from it are pretty good, but eh.
6:43 so glad this part was covered, i remember seeing people "dream about the penguins" calling them "demons"
One of the best videos I’ve seen about this subject! You did a great job with the atmosphere, and the explanations are quite clear too.
HeyItsSteffyCush No problem!
Thanks man :)
This community can be overwhelming at times, but having a video that easily rounds up what it’s all about is always nice to have. You didn’t over complicate anything here and made it both intriguing and enveloping to new and common viewers alike. Kudos to you and thanks!
@SteffyCush pin my comment
thank you for making the journey so enjoyable
I actually really enjoy the thought of a shared consciousness between one of the most popular video games of all times.Like Greek gods they they become more powerful the more they are praised, the idea itself is exponentially unknown. It’s a tread further into a hive mind of total conformity. And with each changed piece of code through our global encompassing thoughts, being transmitted together, the Mandela effect becomes more and more regular. Every 1 or 0 could theoretically be rewritten by a change in energy, with every person remembering something similar it becomes reality. That is a terrifying thought that we as a planet could subconsciously change something physical.I need to do more research on the topic.
Honestly, I love the explanations of the W.F. 1-Up. It just makes me think, what creepypastas could spawn with the obscure hidden Red Potions, P-Bags and Link Dolls scattered across Zelda II ?Are the Link Dolls . . .Voo-doo ?(Dun Dun Dun !)
I have dreamed about those exact penguins so that part kind of terrified me to my core especially with the knock
steff comes back to making youtube videos and gets 70k+ views and helps spark a bit of the mario iceberg popularity what a legend
LOL what can i say
Man kids these days are so lucky, all the Super Mario 64 rumors I had were some blurry pics of the DS version with Waluigi in it
Same man, I am going on eighteen in like eight months, but years back, I always believed that Waluigi was still hidden somewhere in Super Mario 64 DS.
Man I swear every single Waluigi method I saw online was so overcomplicated that even kid me could figure out it wasn't real
@Nicholas NRG Kids took it too far however
Lol talking about "kids these days" while bringing up the DS to demonstrate your advanced age
I remember always having some dreams in the Mario ice island or something like that and I’d always get approached by an entity which had a nasty voice. Ever since then I’d have simple dreams where they’d come out of no where I’d wake up and start mentally breaking down not knowing what had just happened.
Entity: Hey man, ever heard of Raid Shadow Legends?**Wakes up crying and having a mental breakdown**
Personally, I found the hidden 1-up in Whomp's Fortress by looking for one of the stars. I thought I had to blast or break one of the walls to get a star in the tower, so I punched every side until I found... a 1-up. That's how I personally found it. I may have known about it before but completely forgot about it, but that's how I found it. Speaking of which, how DO you get that star?
aiming the cannon at one of the corners by the rotating plank thing :D -- and also that is so cool haha, those star names and the other flavour text really add to the mystique and charm of the game :)
I really loved this video, even though it's fake, it's still really sick. Also am I the only one that when picturing mario running, he doesn't sink, he just runs.
Something kind of similar th the mario sinking thing: whenever i try to picture someone surfing, i can never picture them getting up, and having a smooth ride to shore, something always happens like the nose diving, or an unexpected wave crashing, or even things that dont seem physically possible like the board shooting out from under the feet of the person. And i can never and have never been able to visualize a smooth perfect ride. Its weird
I’d like to imagine that some guy was just beating on walls and found that 1-up
@Caleb oh ok
@Caleb What did it look like?
That’s probably the real way people discovered it. The Crack is a HallucinationThe Crack is a HallucinationThe Crack is a HallucinationThe Crack is a HallucinationThe Crack is a HallucinationThe Crack is a HallucinationThe Crack is a HallucinationThe Crack is a Hallucination
That was me! I also found a glitch in the same world where if you try to put a box next to the incline and jump on it you will glitch through the floor and drown.
Interesting video that covers many of the topics in a creative way!My only complaint is the false crediting of The Cutting Room Floor for the brain texture. Using fake citations like that feels like it crosses the line from "Fiction" to "Spreading False Information".
I only played the ds version but some of the things and had some slightly different experiences. For example the hidden 1 up. I didn't even know it existed but after my 4th time playing the stage something told me to hit that wall. There was no crack or anything just...a weird feeling, kinda like I played the game before but just barely remember certain things which is strange cuz at the time playing it I haven't played it before AND I get that same feeling of something happening or being in a situation where I feel as if I've already been there and know what's going to happen. I also felt a bit scared in wet dry world, it just felt unsettling and when I was heading down through that weird mesh area in the corner of the map I thought there was going to be buildings down there and there were. I felt shocked even though I knew there were buildings, I didn't know if it was abandoned or not so my "memory" didn't cover everything so I was even more shocked and creeped out when no one was there.
I remember when I was little I used to just run around in the courtyard and in front of Peach’s castle, without a care in the world. Just staring at the screen for countless hours locked up in my own fun-land. This was a legendary game….
@SteffyCush Yes, the memories from this game are incredible
what an incredibly beautiful game
God, I love this video. Such a good horror vibe to it, despite the rather ridiculous subject matter. You can't get atmosphere of this quality from pretty much any existing horror movies, funny enough. It's hard to say how many times I've found myself watching it. What phenomenal presentation through and through. The music really goes a long way too, particularly the track which fades in at 4:24, then returns at 6:52. Goose bumps, I tell ya, and somehow in front of 64-bit penguins, no less! How even. That takes talent. Anybody have any idea as to where that music is from though? I've found just about every other track but that one. It's an itch I need scratched.
Here's the comment! Those fiends running the comment moderation algos duped me again -- Once again thanking you so much for one of the nicest comments I've ever received :) :D :D :D
Oh, but there is a hint. "Blast Away The Wall". Those who were looking for the star were most likely hitting every wall in the course, thinking that the star was in them. This is the most likely explanation for the hidden 1-up. The four corner 1-ups on the other hand do not have a clear hint towards them.
@Adam Hennessy and if you look closely the texture on the breakable block does not line up with the towers texture
I think the better explanation for the 1-UP is some weirdo punching every wall cos they got bored
the way i found out was in the 2ed star the block you can break if you look the texture does not line up with the other textures so i decided to punch it and it broke
I ignored that star but then all of a sudden my cannon was aimed too low when trying to launch into the sky and I hit the corner where the star was hidden.
maybe aswell some not so skilled player was always falling of the tower, trying to climb it.and in frustration he punched the tower and randomly punched the wall where the one up is hidden
I love how creepy this game is. Even without the creepypasta. Who knows tho..maybe every copy is personalized :)
*I never expected the most terrifying thing I've heard in my life to be mario 64*
Holy crap the knocking at the penguin bit got me good. My closet door is in the perfect spot that it sounded like it came from it. Stopped the video and didn't have the courage to replay the video until several minutes later and then I realized the knocking was in the video. Well done Steffy ya scared the **** out of me.
Okay. This is my favorite joke theory of all time, hands down. Also, about that 1up in Whomp's Fortress. I kinda just liked to beat the everliving shit out of everything, and eventually tried beating the shit out of that wall, resulting in me finding the 1up.
Really impressive blend of the conspiracy exploration and the theoretical analysis/dissection. "What if?" taken to the next level.
@Sofía Alvarado That last point you mentioned is so important to me -- it really upsets me to see most of the videos out there on this subject are about debunking this, they miss the charm entirely. Why effortlessly disprove this when you could try and work out how to contextualise it and prove it? This is why I had so much fun making this video
@SteffyCush That definitely came through, and ended up being the most interesting dive into this that I've seen so far. There's all these fascinating phenomena happening in our pop culture, and the most interesting thing we can do is to try to get at the root of why they happen through interesting theoretical angles. Watching this helped illuminate why approaches like this appeal to me so much as opposed to those obsessed with debunking everything and leaving it at that.
Thank you so much, my main aim was to try and contextualise the seemingly unfounded rumours and whatnot as a part of greater phenomena. Really was trying to go with the whole 'yes and' mantra for fleshing out some of the more disparate bits of the iceberg and trying to build up a solid framework of theory which hasn't been mentioned before. Thanks for the comment!
You almost had me invested until you brought up MKUltra. It turns an interesting thought experiment into just another conspiracy theory. I just finished watching all the Greenio tapes too, and they are pretty engaging! But this almost had a case until it mentioned a *failed* CIA experiment.
This is why the SpaceWorld version looks so different from the game that was released in the end. Most of the original code had in the personalization program. There was clearly something really wrong going in the Nintendo offices
Playing SM64 for the first time on switch and I'm amazed how much I know about it without even playing it, just from this creepypasta. Like as soon as I booted it up I went straight for L is Real, Wario hallway, "big dud", endless staircase, etc. I can't wait to play through conscious Wet Dry World for the first time.
While I don't believe the creepypasta/meme that every copy is personalized I do like how this video was put together with that eerie tone that makes me look over my shoulder every 5 seconds. Great video
One of the best executed iceberg videos I've seen to date.
I’ve been researching the beta of SM64 for at least 9 years and I can’t say I’ve had any nightmares of the penguins Also I do believe that every SM64 is personal but not in the way this theory suggests I think it’s personal because of how different people play through the game rather than the code being different as changing code in the game will break it in some wayBut that’s just me
0:13 I swear I remember that being there though for more context it sent you to a level where you on a flying carpet but in all the other playthroughs its in another room where you have to jump into a hole to get to into it. (It might have been a dream but it felt too real)
Just in case this blows up sometime soon, I'm writing a note here. I want everyone to know that this whole thing took off in late May of 2020, and I've been on the ride since. The Wario Apparition and Personalized Copies might seem like hot new memes, but genuinely, as simple and fun as it might sound, there was something far far much more deeper than just a couple online jokes, and we were there to experience it all. This video is like a time capsule of everything we went through together. I know I'm gonna be looking back on it in three, five, even ten years, who knows. It's been a great and honestly kind of unsettling ride. It's wonderful, and I hope in the future a couple people can look back at this and see Mario 64 lore and theorycrafting for exactly how simultaneously horrifying and hilarious it all is, and for the other fact..that it's all real
can someone explain to me the purpose of the video? i’m curious but confused
@Doomguy F O R T N I T E
@Dog "Wario can show you fun. Raid shadow lege-"
I successfully reversed the mario sinking in my head.
"whoops, wrong floor type"
*Mario f l y*
the chosen one
Despite the goofy music usually, his voice sounds so serious. He sounds like he's reading an autopsy report, and not a silly Mario 64 meme
This was really well done! Reminds me of R/nosleep, though you do a much better job at playing things straight for humor. Great job!
Interesting how the Smaller Mob Variant of the Ice Bully which was meant to mirror the Lava Versions no longer has the smaller mob on it. That smaller Chill Bully Mob is now an Beta Enemy that was never in the Final Game even though I remember getting a star with the similar conditions as Bully the Bullies in the fire stages where you had to defeat 3 in order to earn a star. Almost forgot, the Crack in the Wall where the hidden 1 up was found was how I found out about it.
For me, I found the hidden castle 1-up in Whomp's Fortress by playing around and pretending I was smashing it to the ground in the DS remake as Wario.
Me: *researches some SM64 creepypastas*Random wacky penguins: Hi.
I remember about the hidden 1 up that there were slightly lighter bricks around the area and they were a tiny bit cracked so I punched them and that’s where the 1 up was
The version of Mario 64 we know the most about was actually brought about by the speed running community, as they manipulated the algorithm to create a version optimal for speedrunning. Why do you think the infamous BLJ exists despite being a huge glaring oversight that got fixed in all subsequent versions?
I’m loving this new era of online creepypasta. I’ll look back on this one proud for being a part of it. If only I had an N64 when I was younger, the effect would really mesh with me and feel a lot more immersive. Even now, playing M64 gives me new ideas for the whole iceberg theory- as well as explanations for other, preexisting theories. Keep it up internet. There’s nothing else to do.
Playing the game and than finding one of the enemies you encountered to no longer be in the "Final Game" is interesting to say the least. The Chill Bully Minions is what I'm referring too,
I am glad the creepy theories get a spotlight noticed that people are making iceberg videos WRONG. With people thinking and making trivia videos or just a list when it's a blend of it all trivia, details, and best theories in one location. People should really rewatch the Mario 64 to see the best template pause and think did you add enough chilly stuff can I go "...Now! this is where things get crazy" as the iceberg keeps going.
I nearly jumped out of my damn chair when I heard the knocking noise. That's what I get for watching this alone at 3AM.
9:17 even though I am playing a rom version, I still fear of walking through that door. The Wario Apparition is like the area where your eyes cant see. the back of your head. He Haunts you from the most venerable part of your brain; the subconsciousness. If he where to rise to your consciousness, you could defeat him, but you never will. that hallway is the subconsciousness of the brain. whatever you do, *DONT GO THROUGH THE STAR DOOR* I am phycological forever trapped in that door.
honestly creepiest room ever
The dream penguins part had me in bitsHow am i supposed to take dream penguins seriously
All the ROM hack footage in this video was really well-done. It had that perfect creepy factor where it's very close to the original, but then has sudden glaring differences that catch you off guard.
the ROMs actually was creepy BC i have seen this game more than i can count
Has this always existed? Favorite game in existence, and making this out of it? Yes.
5:25 I’ve always wondered where images like these come from. Who makes these luminal, dream like hacks? I usually only see screenshots of them
Same starting at 7:20
I wasn’t until it was said that the penguin speaks in harsh scraping noises that i legitimately felt dread and unreasonably paranoid. More shit needs to be this way with horror...
8:01 i visualised mario sinking, then coming out of the ground and getting on top of the roof without the cannon... *i am a demigod lol*
I feel like i have a personalized emulation of Super Monkey Ball, the announcer in monkey race sounds different. And certain movements where i would get vibrations from the controller in the version i played years ago, i wouldnt get those same vibrations. For example i would select an option in the menu and my controller would vibrate in the disc version but on the emulator it wouldnt
I like how scary you tried to make that penguin part. They look freaking adorable. I just love how serious you take this /:)
@SteffyCush i ain’t tryna be negative either I just love this video to bits
Charles Martinet: **Wears a thing that allows him to talk as Mario during an event**Creepypasta community: omg he had his very soul put into mario omg
I’ve read the whole Twitter thread you shown at the beginning and my only complaint is the tarot post.I understand that pentacles are used in occult imagery as pentagrams but pentacles in Wicca/witchcraft/anything related are a symbol of protection and I don’t really sit well with how they described it, but that’s my opinion
I wish we could hear what miyamoto thinks about creepy pastas like this
More way to make money as so many people are still interested in the game. That's why the game got ported, all about the 🤑🤑🤑🤑
I'm absolutely curious now:What's the tune that plays during the screenshot of the black-and-white screenshot of that 4th floor image?
I genuinely have a pit in my stomach with this creepypasta and I haven't felt that in a creepypasta in ages
