SOUNDS OF THEN (THIS IS AUSTRALIA )
    (M.Callaghan)
I think I hear the sounds of then,
    And people talking,
The scenes recalled, by minute movement,
And songs they fall, from the backing tape.
    That certain texture,that certain smell,
To lie in sweat, on familiar sheets,
In brick veneer on financed beds.
In a room, of silent hardiflex
That certain texture, that certain smell,
    Brings home the heavy days,
Brings home the the night time swell,
Out on the patio we'd sit,
    And the humidity we'd breathe,
We'd watch the lightning crack over canefields
Laugh and think, this is Australia.
The block is awkward - it faces west,
    With long diagonals, sloping too.
And in the distance, through the heat haze,
In convoys of silence the cattle graze.
That certain texture, that certain beat,
Brings forth the night time heat.
Out on the patio we'd sit,
    And the humidity we'd breathe,
We'd watch the lightning crack over canefields
Laugh and think that this is Australia.
To lie in sweat, on familiar sheets,
In brick veneer on financed beds.
In a room of silent hardiflex
That certain texture, that certain smell,
    Brings forth the heavy days,
Brings forth the night time sweat
Out on the patio we'd sit,
    And the humidity we'd breathe,
We'd watch the lightning crack over canefields
Laugh and think, this is Australia.
    This is Australia etc..

Interestingly, Mark Calaghn, the songs writer, and his family migrated from England to Bundabergm Queensland, when he was a kid. He wrote the song to describe his early impressions of Australia. He caught the aussie 'essence' incredibly well (especially Queensland's) and it has since become somewhat of a classic aussie summer song.

Dead right, from the days of Johnny O Keefe right through Billy Thorpe, Brian Cadd, Little River Band, Air Supply and countless other great artists, fantastic music was produced here,
but was never encouraged by the powers that be, Aussies get no backing from their government, we led in the aircraft industry,Wright Bros had to buy patents from Laurence Hargrave to be able to fly, we had the Jindivik, a unpiloted aircraft, we built our own planes, what happened to that? Now we import everything from China, god help us when our music comes from there.

He went inside to find about 6 drunken Aussies arms around each other screaming it out. He joined the group that started as 3, when other Aussies heard it they stopped in and joined as well. On his travels later to England he tried the trick himself with his amte and yep Aussies from everywhere stopped in and joined. I reckon it is about the only song most Aussies of all ages know from start to finish when drunk
