    On Wednesday July 8th, 2009, I took a trip down to SMS Rail Service Incorporated in Bridgeport, NJ. At first, we are introduced to a Baldwin S12 #304, still in its Erie Mining Company paint scheme. Also seen in the video, is Pennsylvania Railroad #9069. Plenty of switching action seen in video and also included are some in cab shots. Enjoy!
    *Note* All video was filmed after recieving permission from railroad personnel to enter property and take pictures.
    Thanks for watching! As always, please take a second to leave a comment and rate! Thanks again!

    Very nice. Anyone that can keep vintage motive power successfully operating commercially deserves a tip of the hat.

      It really just takes someone who cares and elbow grease. No diesel is hard to keep running as long as it is maintained properly.

    It's really great to see a working railroad such as this preserving and operating classic motive power for future generations to enjoy. Hats off to SMS Rail Service!

      Yup, the 606A is a large inline-6 diesel, made by DeLaVernge engine company.
      P.S. DeLaVernge was a big maker of steam engines use in all types of industry, back when they had factories with huge belts all over the place to power machinery.

    I have heard alot about this operation from Railpace Magazine. The sound of a Baldwin's prime mover is excellent. Also, let's not forget about the quality of the track in this complex.

    You know you’re getting old when the locomotives, cranes, cars and trucks you use to operate are in museums. The steel mill I worked at, was shutting down and the union tried to get some of the baldwins and Fairbanks Morse locomotives into museums. The company had them cut up, “to teach the union a lesson”.

    The video quality is absolutely amazing for 2009 standards. Anyways, it is an absolute miracle that any Baldwin diesel, let alone an ex ERIE MINING COMPANY ONE, is operating in the 21st century!

    Reminds me of the '60s - '80s when California Western RR was an Baldwin road...haven't heard this great BLW-BLH sound in a loooong time. Music to the ears.

      I remember California western ran all Baldwin's in the 80s. During the day they pulled passenger trains and at night freight my grandparents had a cabin at North spur

    This unit is among the last Baldwins built. They never had the resources to effectively compete with ALCO or, more importantly, EMD. They gave it a shot, but it wasn't meant to be.

    On a previous comment it is said that this was the last Baldwin produced? If I'm correct the 7243 Baldwin was the last one produced and it is sitting near the Depot in Duluth.

    Looks great. But I am puzzled by the headlight casing on the front of #304: looks almost like it might have come off of an EMD switcher. Control stands also appear different than on the DS-4-4-1000 series.

    • @wwrr98
      @wwrr98 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      David Warnick The headlight indeed colame off of an EMD switcher, something that Erie Mining did. As for the control stand, it is a more modern, but still Baldwin, design than what is seen on 9069. All of the S12's at SMS have it. Plus, 304 has been upgraded with a modern 26L brake stand.
      304 is currently being overhauled, but she still retains a Baldwin prime mover and original Baldwin control stand. On top of that, the EMD headlights were removed and Baldwin headlights installed.

    • @blackbirdgaming8147
      @blackbirdgaming8147 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Norman Yeah for sure in the lower revs it sounds a ton like a 244. If I didn’t know any better I’m sure I would mistake it for a 244-powered ALCO. But in the higher revs the distinctive Baldwin sound comes out.

    Which side is the front?

    • @johncotter1600
      @johncotter1600 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hoods usually face forward, but they drive them with the cab forward from what I can tell. Switchers are designed to easily do both, so it really doesn't matter.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the Pennsy locomotive, the long hood is the front - at about 8:06, you can see a small "F" painted on the frame, between the builder's plate and the steps. The control stand of the Erie locomotive appears to be set up with the cab as the front
