Here's some FUN BEHIND THE SCENES footage we recently found of THE ALIEN QUEEN. We wanted to share this FIRST with you, our most AWESOME supporters... as a THANK YOU. ALL of our videos will be available to you (before anyone else/released to the public), here on GOOGLE+!. THANKS, AGAIN and please keep the comments and questions coming! Let us know what you'd like to see more of!
I love seeing the animatronics from movies like this. It makes things so much more real. It's easier for the actors to put themselves in the position of their character rather than having to think up the monster. I'd take animatronics over CGI any day.
Really, the best special effects are a combo of practical effects and CGI. Purely CGI and the overall look and texture doesn't look realistic, purely practical effects and the camera shots have limitations. Best if you operate an animatronic puppet for the first shot, then later crop out the control rods, add CG details and movements, and enhance the lighting to help it "blend" with the real things.
They did that for Mad Max and Men in Black right? And those mix of effects really worked out well. There should really be more films blending the two for the best effect :)
actually the best is when even the trained eye can't spot the effect being used. as you said practical effects have their limits, CGI does too, they're just tools. a movie like jurassic park who has been made blending both tech (and actually far less CGI than people might think nowadays) it doesn't age nearly as much. not to mention, it'll be an absolute shame for the practical SFX industry to disapear, guys like Stan Wiston, Phil Tippet, Rob Bottin, Rick Baker, Tom Savini and the like are absolute national treasures.
This must be one of the best animatronic ever made ! When you mix real art of a powerful artist and animatronics workers you can't be wrong. CGI never gonna beat real life performance and the Queen is there to remind us !
+Jonathan Klein Both has their ups and downs. CGI is kind of overused, but you can't really say that one is really better than another, as both are completely different techniques.
I think a combo of CGI and practical effects makes a great movie. Like the first Jurassic Park! The scene of the T-Rex escaping the paddock and attacking the car with the kids in it was a combo of CGI and practical effects. I had to BEG my mom as a kid to see it and she was reluctant due to how "expensive" it was. After the credits my mom announced it was worth the price of admission!
I love the Queen ADI built for this movie, she looks great! Also, seems to be on the nice side when not acting - that birthday-cake presentation made me laugh, have never seen THAT one before. :-)
OMG that was amazing! Watched every second of it! Man if I could play in a movie like that and get to know the aliens and predators more that would be Awsome ...
I love seeing Paul Anderson being so excited in this, he's just so transparent about the whole thing, just a big kid making a monster movie. I'll bet this was the most fun of all the Alien movies to work on. ...was it? Yeah, I'm officially asking, you guys have worked on all but two of them, which set had the most congenial working environment? And also, why the hell *didn't* you work on Prometheus?
Makes me proud and happy at the same time, that some studios even can get shit done without CGI. But apparently Alien/s and Predator/s (the first 2 Pred movies, the 2010 not though) are the only movies still loved, still being watched and still being shown sometimes in free tv and that for decades. If i remember correctly, the first Alien movie was in 1979. So, in 3 years this franchise can celebrate it's 40th "birthday"...Cool.
My goal in life is to work on a set with an animatronic just like this, but at the same time, I'm not sure any work would get done, I might be too busy crying my eyes out at how amazing it is to be there, in the presence of such a thing of beauty, of such a gestalt masterpiece of imagination, ingenuity, and grunt work.
The best thing about AVP were definitely the visuals and alien animatronics themselves. They looked so real and that alien vs predator fight was awesome too.
There are points where it looks like a real animal on set because it's movements look so natural. I love animatronics and puppets, it always looks so neat on film.
It's like playing with a HUGE animatronic toy. A very creepy and awesome animatronic toy. I love when Alien films have practical effects, yet my dream would be to see a functional animatronic Xenomorph in the flesh and wires.
she has to be, to match the agility n speed of the predator. imagine what it would be like if they used the fat alien queen design from aliens. the predator will run 10 circles around her bfor she catches up.

seems pretty quiet for being a huge mechanic puppet, is it hydraulic?
where is that queen now?
studioADI YOU GUY'S ARE JUST AWESOME AND AMAZING!! AS A FAN I ADMIRE ALL YOUR TALENT. THANKS FOR SHARING :)
Love the derpy moment at the end with the birthday cake. Very amusing :-)
The little hisses from the hydraulics are actually very fitting and sound like alien breath, hah
yeah then they add a tiny bit cgi into the mix and it sounds louder and better
Gambit cgi doesnt add sound . idiot
Yes, that was genius given the cold environment.
Maybe they should use some of those sounds and distort em to use for the movie.

Animatronics are way better than CGI
+Jonathan Klein Agreed

Agree, yes so far.
Totally worth the price of admission ! even for just one T-rex scream on Dolby Suround ;)
Such an impressive animatronic in so many ways... scale, range of motion, and detail. Fantastic work!
Wow... even with the Xenomorph Queen, she has a heart, and the cake isn't a lie. GlaDoS, does your cruelty know no bounds?
DarkCyberElf (Mylon Requiem) Hehe shes beatifull!

What an amazing set this must have been. I would have loved to have stood next to that. So great.
I love the Queen ADI built for this movie, she looks great! Also, seems to be on the nice side when not acting - that birthday-cake presentation made me laugh, have never seen THAT one before. :-)

The best thing about AVP were definitely the visuals and alien animatronics themselves.
They looked so real and that alien vs predator fight was awesome too.

Shes so beautiful, and in her new reincarnation she looks much more agil and predatory-like than in aliens
she has to be, to match the agility n speed of the predator. imagine what it would be like if they used the fat alien queen design from aliens. the predator will run 10 circles around her bfor she catches up.
