- In this Riding The Edge Photo video, I take out my first roll of 35mm black and white film of the year. I often like to say a roll of film has a story to tell, so come along to see where this roll of Ilford HP5 plus takes me.

The perfect video to go with my morning cup of tea while I wake up.
Glad to have you back
Thank you for saying so!
Thanks for bringing us along! This is my favorite kind of video. I'm glad this is the direction you've decided to go.
Thank you for the kind words!
Beautiful shots David I love those wider landscapes with the fog and light coming g through the trees 😊 looking forward to your 2025 photographic year
Thank you!
I’m with you on the choice of the 35mm format. I love the relatively lo-fi look and feel of 35mm film. I’ve actually made large inkjet prints (13x19) from 35mm film photos and they came out great. One of them hangs on the wall in our living room. A 35mm SLR allows you to get in nice and close.
Dave, really enjoyed the video, the walk, the comments and the images. Nice work, and the stories always make the images more special. And always love seeing your beautiful companion with you!
Thank you!
What a great start to 2025 David!
Beautiful images. Very calming, and of course, always enjoyable to see Nori. This style fits you perfectly!! Cheers!
Thank you Robert!
Glad to see the joy is coming back. I see a sparkle in your eyes. No better exercise than walking with a good dog and your camera. You will make better photos with the camera/format that you are most comfortable with. When I get a new camera, I have to think about the operation of the camera more than the composition of the shot.
Thank you, exactly, nothing like a good dog and a camera!
A good photographic philosophy! Enjoyed traveling along on the ride.
Thank you!
It's nice that you are able to continue to find new images in the same area. Happy New Year, looking forward to your future adventures.
Happy New Year Keith!
Great video David! Love the fog ones for sure, and really like that last backlit leaf!
Thanks Brent!
Hi David, i have just discovered your channel and have been really enjoying your videos. I've been enjoying photography as a hobby for over 30 years and have been recently thinking a lot about what photography means to me. I boiled it down to 3 things: capturing moments and memories, experimenting/having fun, and renewal (mostly going for a walk without any expectations, just to give my mind a chance to reset). Thank you for sharing. I think we all need to do more of it.
Thank you, and thank you for introducing yourself, I hope you are getting all you want from you photography!
Hi, Dave.
This should do much more "TH-cam" photographers.
Photographing because you want to photograph it and not because you are making a video.
This is the right approach for me, and I hope you hold it.
And as far as fog is concerned, you always have your photos, friend.
That 70-200 lens is actually ideal for intimate photography in a wooded area, or densely overgrown environment.
This is, for me, the most beautiful way of photographing those small special things in nature.
The stabilization works very well or you have a super silent hand because your photos look very good.
I have the feeling you have with 35mm with micro 4/3 and the 4: 3 format.
So I know what you mean.
A warm greeting from the cold Netherlands.
Ps. I am happy to see that you will be happy again while photographing.
Thank you Antoine, as always it's great to hear your thoughts!
I love the 70 ~200 F4G. Its light, just as sharp as the F2.8 version, it has VR and it doesn't cost the earth. Such a brilliant lens from Nikon.
I agree, one of the best lens purchases I've made in years!
Nice start to the new year David love the format of your video's and your approach to it all look forward to the next roll.
Thank you!
Happy new year Dave. Always great to accompany you on your photo walks.
Thank you, Happy New Year!
I don’t think you landed there! I think it is the format that lets you naturally express what you feel. After so many years using it to tell stories as a journalist, it is natural that 35mm would be what seems best for you to express yourself. I loved your 4x5 photos. I thought they were great! However, 35mm seems to give you joy and the tool to express that. That can’t be beat.
Thank you for sharing, you nailed exactly what I was trying to get across in this video!
Welcome to the New Year, Dave. I am enjoying your new approach to your videos. I am a big fan of keeping it real. Though I must say, this New Year I have been tinkering with some 120. Nice start to the year. Am looking forward to more.
Thank you Terry, there is nothing wrong with experiencing different ways to doing photography, you won't know how much you like something until you try it! I hope you have a rewarding time venturing into 120!
Great discussion David. Enjoyed the images. Yes, I have no issue, creating 11x14 images from 400 ISO film. Thanks. KB
Thanks Ken!
Nice video and talk with a lot of truth. Thanks for sharing. I see a lot of similarities!
Thank you!
Enjoyed watching you tell your story about your first roll of film this year. I just inquired about accessing the logging road at the end of our street so I can go for walks occasionally like you do.
That is great! I hope you enjoy your walks and exploration close to home as much as I do!
Perfect !!
Thank you!
I appreciate the honest quality of shooting for the sake of it, and video being secondary. I can tell you enjoy it that way.
What body is the Nikon , please ?
Thank you, the camera in this video, a camera I often use for a walk around camera is a Nikon n80, also known as the f80 outside of US, It’s super light weight and compact. When I’m working on a tripod I’m usually using a Nikon f4 and a newly acquired Nikon f5.
Nice images
Thanks James!
Completely off subject, but having followed your videos for a while and thinking you are a pretty laid back guy and maybe interested in cool books too? If you haven’t already read them, I sincerely recommend The Mercury Visions of Louis Daguerre, a half fictitious biography of the early photography pioneer, and Caught Inside, by Daniel Duane, a kind of philosophical surfing and nature novel. I live in the UK and had to import both from the States. Well worth it. Enjoying your relaxed presentation of your videos man. Keep it up 👍📸
Thank you for the book recommendations, I'll have a look!
@@RidingTheEdgePhoto The Daguerre novel writer was Dominic Smith. A beautiful book man.
Always appreciate your explanations and thoughts as you are taking the image. One question, how do you achieve the final image of converting film to digital for display during the video.
Thank you, I use a mirror less Sony A7r2 digital camera with a devise that attaches to the end of a macro lens to scan my negatives, I convert and edit them in Affinity Photo
Enjoyed your video, especially the fog photographs. I had decent film cameras , but sold them to finance my digital gear. Maybe shouldn't have been so hasty. What goes around comes around, comes around as the adage goes.......
Thank you, it doesn't really matter what you use for your photography as long as you enjoy using it!
Hello David, I see you are shooting with a Nikon, which model?
I've been using Nikon cameras exclusively for more than 30 years, 25 years working as a photojournalist and also for my nature photography, I say that for background. :) Currently for my film photography I'm using a N80 for much of my walk around photography. When working from tripod and using slower films I'm using a Nikon F4 and a F5. Hopefully that answers your question, probably more info than you where looking for 😁
@@RidingTheEdgePhoto Thanks David for the reply. I purchased my first new film camera after I graduated from college 1982. It was a Nikon FM2, then about 1990 I purchased the Nikon 8008S, and then finally in 2002 I purchased the F100. Did not shoot film for about 20 years until 2023 and I pulled my F100 out if its camera bag that had been stored away. I have put a least one roll of film through each one of my cameras, including a few point and shoots. Although I am a digital shooter now (Nikon D100, D70S, D200, D7000, D600, D800E, Z6, Z7 and now Z8), I find I want to shoot more film. I hike and backpack and I take turns with my digital and film cameras. Thanks for your videos, I'm enjoying them. I've looked thru your magazine and will probably purchase to give some ideas.
The Nikon 8008s was my first Nikon, it's the camera that I started my career with, there's been a long list of cameras since then, I'm pretty old 😂
@ I'm probably older..!
