This channel is so good for people like me. Darwin is my first BP and your channel is fantastic for a beginner like me. I’m going to utilize your tips and exercise more patience with him. He’s pretty bold and will climb all over my hands & arms. He doesn’t like frozen/thawed though☹️but I’m working on it. I love being a Patron of your channel. I’m really learning a lot of important things about BP behavior and that’s worth supporting! Say hi to Kent😉. 🐍❤️🐍 Live stream was AMAZING!!
I haven't target trained my bp yet. It's kinda funny, though. When I started feeding my corn snake I would put a plastic lid on top of her substrate in hopes that she wouldn't get substrate particals in her mouth. Now, when I put the lid in there, she automatically knows it's feeding time. She is so cute watching her just sit and wait for her food. It is like her little plate.😂

Another supreme video Bob! I love watching the personalities of my own as well. One of my youngsters behaves like Derek Zoolander during the ‘witching’ hour and the newest at 2 months old (but huge at 184grams) is a carbon copy of your #2 as far as personality is concerned.
My girl came last night and after some hesitation she’s slowly getting used to me. Daily water changes are also a positive experience for them, you’re going into their enclosure but you’re not trying to mess with them at all.
I have enjoyed watching your content. I got my first snake/ball python this past weekend at Repticon. I was able to pickup a Feb 2022, normal for $50. She would let me hold her then but after being in that enclosure she gets a little on the pessy side. She stiffens up and strikes. I sat on the floor in front of her for 30 minutes or more and she would not move. She was curled up sort of and the old double s in the neck. She was ready to strike as soon as the opportunity arose. How can I calm her down enough that I could handle her again. I left her alone for 48 hours after bringing her home like the breeder said. Now she is satin so to speak, hissing at times and you can see she is breathing hard by looking at her body. Thanks, Tim now subscribed.
Hey Tim, congrats on the new snake! She's going to take longer than 48 hours to adjust - this is a stressful time for her. It's best to leave them alone for at least a week (or two) to get settled in and comfortable with their new home. After that settling in period, see if she will eat something. If she eats, then wait 48 hours for her to digest and you can start working with her. It just takes some patience :-)
This is an awesome video, I was just dealing with the breathing issue that you were going over. I found that it was only during excessive exercise that I was getting any breathing noise. Her eyes are also going into blue so I'm wondering it its shed sounds. But I'll definitely keeping an eye on her and the boxes idea is wonderful 👍

Thanks Ava!... There are reptile warmers that we use for shipping that are good to have on hand. If it's just one snake, you can keep them warm against you
I have heard that you can use a shirt that you've worn to help them acclimate to your scent and feel safe in the presents of you scent. Is that true at all? I know ive done it for my dog with blankets, and it seems to help her anxiety.
Target training is so great! I got my banana pied boy at a few months old. I got him transitioned from live to frozen and he's been a great eater. He lived in a large tub- not a rack, just a tub with a lid (I finally upgraded to something better, I really wanted to see him more because he's very active at night). At some point he got really food motivated and as soon as I opened the lid, would come flying out of the tub snapping towards me, whether being fed or not. After some time target training, I don't have that problem anymore. He is a pretty chill snake and a good boy otherwise, quite curious. I also do target training with my little childrens python who is pretty feisty. If I forget myself and don't talk to him properly, if I reach in to get his water bowl I will have tiny teeth marks reminding me I went in his territory without permission. He is super curious and will always come out if I call his name or I'm doing something in front of his enclosure. I've been working to just calmly rest my hand near him, and he will come check it out. I love the species, definitely has more going on in his brain than my ball pythons even though he's much smaller. And those big cute cat eyes!
I'm a little late watching. Thanks for the shout out Bob :). Question I was told glass surfing was a sign of stress and neither one of my bp do that. My female is pretty much always hiding and when my male comes out at night I always find him perched in his branch he has. Does that mean they never want to come out if they're not surfing the glass?
Hey Miss Grimm! I'd say it's a sign of stress if they're doing it constantly and especially during the day, but a lot of it is just part of them cruising around. Some snakes don't do it very much at all. It sounds like your boy just likes to come out and chill on a perch. You might see him do it if he starts hunting or just doing a few laps in his enclosure :-)
Excellent video! You were talking about helping snakes realize you aren't a threat. My ball python was owned by people who hurt him, although probably by accident. He still hisses when I pick him up. He is in a top opening enclosure, so some of these tips won't work as well for me. When I upgrade him that will change. If you have any suggestions that would be awesome!
Do you think you could do a video on king snakes? I have a mexican black i just recently acquired and was curious about your thoughts on king snakes and specifically mexican black king snakes.
Hello bob! Awesome tips and tricks. I’ve learned a lot. I have a question though. I got my first ball python about a month and a half ago. He’s about 5 or 6 months old maybe… anyways. He doesn’t tense up and seems completely not afraid unless I touch his head or when I first lift up his hide. Once he’s in my hand or I put him on the bed his muscles are completely relaxed. Is this normal? Does he just not care or did the breeder really do good work on taming him?
My other half just got his first ball python a few days ago and he becomes a wooden plank when you try to hold him. Mine is always in his hide and his never goes in his hide. Completely 2 different personalities
Yep, that's normal with some ball pythons. Some just come out of the egg well socialized. Some are nervous. Next week's video is all about snake personalities ;-)
Thanks Bob! I'm still working my way up to handling since Kyle will be at 200g soon, but he's still really grumpy. He gets mad at the top of the hide (Zilla rock lair) coming up & has started to strike at it. Maybe when we get past that will I commit to taking him out. For now, he knows that if I'm not harassing him, I have food, so I'm not all bad 🤣
@@GreenRoomPythons he doesn't do it with the hide that's just a pyramid, but the lid to the rock comes up & he goes into defense mode. I honestly don't mind giving him more time to mature though. He had a rough start in life, coming to me very underweight with a bunch of stuck shed. He seems to be doing great now as far as health goes. He eats without question, gives me nice pees & poos, and hides all the time only peeking out to look for food. If nothing else, he's pretty cute, so if the Kyle attitude sticks, I'll just admire him in his tank lol
Glad you're enjoying the content! That's a good question, and I have a video on snake vision. They can see color but not as much as we do. They can see blues and greens pretty well
My bp can imo comprehend a closed clear acrylic door vs an open door. (Acts way more cautious when open without going up to it beforehand but boldly goes up to the door and yawns when closed, also without touching it beforehand) is that a heat signature thing? Airflow thing?
I bought the ladder from Amazon. I have a whole superdwarf retic video on it. I wouldn't recommend a ladder for a ball python though. But it's great for arboreal and semi arboreal snakes :-)
@@GreenRoomPythons I was going to do something on a much smaller scale lol. He likes to climb until he derps himself back into the ground. I guess I missed that video, I’ll have to go back and check it out.
@@nicolecraig6986 yeah I always tell people to make sure their ball python isn't too high off the ground and they have something soft to fall onto. They'll climb, but they're not good at it 😄
Hey Bob, I have one snake that I got at about 700grams. She was on ft, I tried feeding her of tongs for weeks with her just striking without wrapping. I finally through in a live and she now eats weekly. But she seems to hate me for puting a rat in her face week after week. As soon as I open her tub she wants to bite me. I often think about handling her but I don’t want to stress her and make things worse. My other snakes are super chill. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Hey Ben, I'd work on giving her as much clutter and security as possible and then work slowly on getting her used to your presence... Sounds like she's defensively striking the FT on tongs. She might eat off a plate if you just left it in for her.
My snake stays in his hide (he’s been here 4 days). I play bluegrass music softly and sing to him in the “high lonesome sound.” Not sure if it helps or not. I also talk to him every day.
How do you do day night cycles for ball pythons? I put a cover on the front of the terrarium but that obviously isn't that good for display. Are there any other solutions?
Lucy ate her first food today after getting her at a pet expo in Eau Clare in Wisconsin and she is all over the place sliding on the glass a lot and then back into her hide then out again. Is this normal? First-timer with a BP.
So I have had my asphalt ball python for five weeks when we first got him he showed a lot of interest in exploring and just being out of his hide. A week ago however he just shed. Coincidently the day after he shared was the day of his feeding and he did take to some food, but after giving him a solid 72 hours to digest and also not being able to have handled him due to the fact that he was in shed, when my wife or myself reach in the same way we always have to take him out and interact with him he is extremely jumpy and flinchy. Even with very gentle moderate contact he is still very jumpy and fearful. Is this type of behavior normal after a shedding process?
I'd say it's normal ball python behavior and probably doesn't have anything to do with a recent shed. He may just be settled in now and is reacting to being awakened and pulled out of his hide.
I think I did a bad thing, when I started out, I would handle the snake for a bit then after would feed it, as in the beginning I would only handle it every few days. I noticed after handling it would suddenly sit there waiting for something. Now since we handle him every day, he doesn't seem to wait around and goes directly into his hide. He's a very aggressive eater so no issues there yet.
Sure! I'll just answer here: You can do that anytime. I have a couple videos on food where I talk about switching to rats. Just make sure the rat is about the same size as the thickest part of the snakes body.
I always start a waiting list with my Patreon supporters when a clutch begins to hatch. So if you're on Patreon you'll get those notifications and you can get on a waiting list. I have two open waiting lists right now
I have a snake that doesn’t strike when she eats. Is this normal? I’ve never seen her strike actually! She will circle around a frozen/thawed for 1/2 minutes before she opens her mouth around it. Have you ever had this experience? Thanks for the time and knowledge ❤
My ball python has eaten her first meal a couple days ago. :) Now I'm ready to handle her for the first time, what is the best way to take her out and handle her for the first 5-10 mins? :)
Hey Bob, have you given any thought to a collaboration with Lori Torini? Just wanted to plug that thought in your head, I'd love to see it grow into something
I need ur help man! I just upped my adult snake to medium rats. But he is hungry the next day? Are ur snake’s constantly hungry like that or should i get a vet for parasites????
Snakes don't get hungry like mammals get hungry. They are opportunistic feeders and they're always looking for food. People often misinterpret this behavior and think they are not feeding enough, and this is when snakes become obese. I have a number of videos on the channel that cover feeding, which will help you. One big tip I can give you though is that adult male ball pythons don't need medium rats. They can live their entire life on a small rat every two weeks and they grow just fine with that amount of food.
They react like that because that is the only place snakes can't see is the beck of the head and the tops of their necks. And they don't smell they taste scent particles
Yeah, that tongue to Jacobsen's orgen sense is a tough one to describe. We either say they "smell" or "taste" scent particles because we can relate to those senses, but it's obviously a completely different sense that we just don't have a frame of reference for.
I got lucky with my new ball python, every night I see him out of his hide if i open his tub and put my hand under the lip he immediately slithers onto my hand

I really enjoy target training my corn snake. We haven't been doing it too long, but we are the stage where she will follow it through some simple obstacles. The goal is to get her to station for weighing. Thanks for a great video, Lori Torrini suggested we check you out. Its refreshing to see some updated husbandry videos for royals. New subscriber!
Hey Natalia, welcome! That's great that you're target training your corn snake :-)
This is a really nice video and extra helpful on second viewing now I actually have my new noodle
Glad you like this one. I'll be doing more like it :-)
Man this is freaking awesome keeping info! To the future of keeping enrichment is key ;)
This channel is so good for people like me. Darwin is my first BP and your channel is fantastic for a beginner like me. Kevin @ NERD talks about the “brain modes” of snakes (& lizards), like food mode, thinking mode, fear mode, etc. And that’s exactly what you’re talking about here……I love it!
Thanks Lori! I'm glad these videos are helping and I'm happy to have you on board! :-)
Always, Always, Always, loving your tips & tricks Bob..

Glad you liked it! Sometimes stuck shed in their nostril can cause a whistle sound too

How did you target train?
Grab a front opening PVC enclosure and you'll be all set! It's just going to take longer with an adult who has had bed experiences :-)

Do you think you could do a video on king snakes? I have a mexican black i just recently acquired and was curious about your thoughts on king snakes and specifically mexican black king snakes.
Best advice was the very end of the video. Last 15 seconds or so 😂
Aw thanks!
Interesting that he's striking at his hide. I wonder if he would still do that if you gave him a different one... He sounds like a good challenge! ;-)

Hi Monizz!
When handling your ball python, how do you determine when they've had enough and should go back into their enclosure?
Hooked on your content. Silly question but do 🐍 see color, or is it like Predator the 🎥 ????
Glad you're enjoying the content! That's a good question, and I have a video on snake vision. They can see color but not as much as we do. They can see blues and greens pretty well
Another great vid……PS #2 is absolutely gorgeous. What morph is she?
Thanks! She's at her new home now, but if I remember right, she's a spotnose, calico, X-Treme gene

@@GreenRoomPythons 😂😂😂
I have a question. When you have to open your snake’s mouth to check if it has a infection how do you do it.? Without hurting them.
Using the middle part of a Qtip to gently pry their mouth open works well
My bp can imo comprehend a closed clear acrylic door vs an open door. (Acts way more cautious when open without going up to it beforehand but boldly goes up to the door and yawns when closed, also without touching it beforehand) is that a heat signature thing? Airflow thing?
Hello, I'm new to handling snakes.
How did you make your ladder? Our boy is very active and we’d love to give him something like that.

Hey Bob,
I have one snake that I got at about 700grams.
Bluegrass music is ALWAYS good to play - even though snakes only hear lower tones ;-)
It's the intention that counts
How do you do day night cycles for ball pythons? I put a cover on the front of the terrarium but that obviously isn't that good for display. Are there any other solutions?
Lucy ate her first food today after getting her at a pet expo in Eau Clare in Wisconsin and she is all over the place sliding on the glass a lot and then back into her hide then out again. Is this normal?
First-timer with a BP.
lol… as always great video. u should make a theme song with ur ukulele.
Maybe a theme song for Kent ;-)
@@GreenRoomPythons copy that! Thanks bob!
I doubt that would have any adverse effects. Sounds like he's pretty used to handeling at this point :-)
Great video good pets animals reptiles Snakes room
Do you try to match the snake with the new owner?
You should keep number two and start a breeding project focused on temperament
I'm keeping #1 and #6 who basically have that same temperament. I really think there's something to the "breeding for temperament" theory...
Yes! I think that is going to be the next big thing. And i think that more breeders should do it.
I just got a new snake and he’s constantly trying to smell the lid and try to get out, but he had no problem with holding at first.
Congrats on your new snake!
Can u make a video on when it's ok to switch a snake from an adult mouse to a small rat?
Sure! I'll just answer here:
You can do that anytime. I have a couple videos on food where I talk about switching to rats. Just make sure the rat is about the same size as the thickest part of the snakes body.
I would love to purchase a snake from you how do I go about doing that?
I always start a waiting list with my Patreon supporters when a clutch begins to hatch. So if you're on Patreon you'll get those notifications and you can get on a waiting list. I have two open waiting lists right now
I have a snake that doesn’t strike when she eats. Is this normal? I’ve never seen her strike actually! She will circle around a frozen/thawed for 1/2 minutes before she opens her mouth around it. Have you ever had this experience? Thanks for the time and knowledge ❤
Yes, it's rare but some snakes eat that way
My ball python has eaten her first meal a couple days ago. :) Now I'm ready to handle her for the first time, what is the best way to take her out and handle her for the first 5-10 mins? :)

@ thank you so much i appreciate you so much!
Where do you sell your pythons??
I start waiting list as soon as a clutch hatches. I announce it to my Patreon supporters first and then TH-cam :-)
