I was on that lane on Walney, the Queen and Prince Phillip drove up that lane, they had come from Walney airport, I reckon it was around 56, I were 5 yrs old and lived in Trent Vale. What memories. I even saw them as they drove past
Thanks for the nostalgia. I left in 1989. The airport had old shooting ranges and lots of raised buildings. There was a command centre underground but flooded. The golf course south of Earnse Bay had old gun emplacements and a nuclear shelter by the Coast Guard tower. I’m sure it’s all gone now. I walked across to Barrow across the channel regularly. You took me back ❤
The gun emplacements are still there, the coast guard tower was actually bought by a guy and hes been renovating it, turning it into a home, the very top is all glass windows now so the view must be great during sunsets. Never heard about a nuclear shelter unless its under the tower somewhere, but ive never been inside it so don't know the layout.
@@AnubisOda yes it is next to the tower on the south side. It was a small one. There was a fence and a two car pad there. It was active in the early 1970s. Royal Observer Corp? Oh on the way to Furnace Abbey, on the right in the trees is a large nuclear bunker. For the mayor and his chums. No idea if still functional.
