The chip is a Holtek microcontroller (MCU) with built in timer, ADC and PWM functions. It will be using PWM control of the heating elements with internal timer. I’ve encountered the Holtek brand previously with several Arduino projects (especially display drivers). They have some interesting products and are very competitively priced; hence their use here. Pretty sophisticated for a basic toaster, but that is par for the course these days, where you can buy a fully-fledged scientific calculator for a pound. Economy of scale, commoditisation and consumerism rolls ever onwards…

After reading the comments and attempting to open a Morphy Richards 4 slice toaster model 44733, I found the base of the toaster was attached using special screws which needs a special tool to remove them. I managed to repair the left-hand side of the toaster by cleaning and removing the bread crumbs but the right-hand side won't heat up. I reckon like you discovered in your toaster, the magnet solenoid/timer switch is busted and not connecting to the electrical supply thereby not conneting/disconecting via an electrical signal and not heating the element. Moral of the story it throw away and buy a new buggar!

Oh man, I regret agreeing to fix my friend's George Home 4-slice toaster. She has given it to me, but since learning they are only 25 quid new, there isn't much motivation any more! It looked more expensive than it is. A nightmare to take apart, sharp edges, greasy breadcrumbs in gunge-form at the bottom of the toaster just above the trays. I am no longer thinking about the cost of it, but the fact it would be a horrible waste to throw away a working toaster. The left dual-slots would not stay down, and the ELECTROMAGNET was failing due to some gunk on it. The repair was a Q-tip taking all of 30 seconds, but the disassembly and cleaning is worse than hell.

They use light material because the weight, dont, want too heavy toasters.
