Vicky was good in the movie no doubt and he turned out to be a good actor, doing good movies and is loved but nothing in his role and performance could be labeled as stole the country’s heart, in the face of Ranbir’s towering performance and role.

You guys should watch some of Sanjay Dutt's old movies. Munnabhai series, Vaastav and Shootout at Lokhandwala in particular are movies I recommend. When you watch those, you'll notice his very unique body language and delivery, Ranbir has done a very good job in this movie.

Ranbir did PHENOMENAL acting in Sanju and the way he changed his physicality, mannerisms and speech to Sanjay Dutt’s is nothing short of PHENOMENAL as well.....He’s an acting tour de force, living up to his name RK.......Feel So sorry that he lost tons of money producing Jagga Jasoos but he was brilliant in that too.....I hope Bramastra does not disappoint him with a weak script but with him and Alia, we can expect some great acting at the very least.....Best wishes RK👏👏👏 You can enjoy and appreciate this move even before watching any of Sanjay Dutt’s movies, you already know his biography and what he looks like at different stages, so please don’t wait to see Ranbir..........The reason some people didn’t like or watch it is because they felt that it was made to whitewash S. For you to appreciate this movie, you have to watch some of Sanjay Dutt's classics and timeless comedies like Munna Bhai series(this is a must because the same director who directed "Sanju" also directed Munna Bhai series. You will find a lot of resemblance in his works if you observe closely). But the problem is Munna Bhai movies are hard to understand for foreigners. These are extremely "Indian" films and it is hard to translate the Tapori words. I hope you guys find a well subbed version and make yourself completely ready before watching them.
You have seen Sanjay Dutt in PK (Zack mentioned that he liked him and his comedic timing, in his review.. I guess Korbin didn't catch it at the time) ..
You just have to watch this film. It’s sooo good. Ranbir Kapoor is one of the very few Indian actors who won an Asian Film Award nomination..he won the a best actor nomination for his work in this film.
Ranbir has pulled off dozens of thespianatic roles in a way only he can, along with mainstream masala flicks; while I can't imagine Nawaz, Tripathi etc pulling off a mainstream movie ever. It's a very casual take to think the supporting actors as Gods & the mainstream stars as non actors. If mainstream acting was that easy, Nawaz would have been a superstar; but he isn't because he can't pull it off. Ranbir along with other mainstream stars such as SRK, Amitabh, Dilip Kumar have a wider range, and are also better in many ways

So so true...being able to pull off glam at times is also difficult and a different cup of tea. Acting is acting. Not always can you brand the ones doing raw rugged roles as greater actors though I agree they are phenomenal. They all are phenomenal in their own rights and equally so!

If not movies, you should watch some Sanjay Dutt songs / interviews to see his body language and demeanor. It will help you appreciate Ranbir more in the movie. Not a big fan of this movie but Ranbir's acting was certainly phenomenal.

Glad you finally reacted to something where you can appreciate Ranbir’s talent instead of doubting him.....You need to give a chance to his cousins Karishma and Kareena too, they’re also excellent actors........Of course they had to do their fair share of bad movies for different reasons but in all of them, they made their mark and Karishma’s phenomenal performances in films like Zubeida, Shakti...the Power, Fiza is unparalleled, in addition to being a great dancer.....Kareena too has given some excellent performances.....Her name is also always mentioned and chosen as good actress on all the shows and it was only after Priyanka went West and Kareena continued taking a back seat and rejecting the great roles, did people start taking PCs name out of admiration.
You need to watch few Sanjay dutt movies before watching this one. Specially Munna Bhai, Vastav, Khalnayak. Just to know the body language and the personality of Sanjay Dutt. Then you will definitely appreciate the effort put in by Ranbir.

Ranbir became the greatest A list actor of bollywood within 5 years of his debut. All the praise you hear about him on KWK are pre 2018. Sanju came in 2018 and it's just another addition to his legendary status, nothing else.

Guys, for starters, hope by now u know that Sanjay Dutt is the son of Sunil Dutt (Padosan, Mother India) & Nargis Dutt (Mother India & u've reacted to ton of her songs with Raj Kapoor) in b&w. Before watching Sanju, it'll be good if u see at least 2-3 films of Sanjay Dutt (Munnabhai Series a must) so that you understand his transformations better.
So true. The film wasn't a properly done biopic, nor a good comedy drama. Apart from the stellar cast and to an extent Hirani's Direction, it was a run of the mill movie for box office success.
While I'm quite aware of the popular opinion (and the MASSIVE box office numbers), this movie was all kinds of bad. Bad acting, caricatured the whole thing, a talented guy like RK completely blowing it, not to mention the blatant whitewashing of Sanjay Dutt's deeds almost to the point of monumental stupidity. It was clear from the trailer itself that this is probably a very expensive whitewashing exercise and the gamble paid off! The only positive from this movie was Vicky Kaushal. That guy can do no wrong. He ran away with the film I believe. P.S Cue RK fanboys hating on this :-)

You guys have no idea how underrated Ranbir is. He is our Jake Gyllenhaal. He could have been easily a chocolate boy and thats what he was offered mostly and initially he looked and acted like just another star kid but with Rockstar, Tamasha and Sanju he won everyone over. I was never his fan and didnt like his early work until he did Wake up Sid. But i think it was Tamasha that changed everything for me.
Definitely watch Munnna Bhai MBBS before this film. Because this film explores how that film changed Sanjay Dutt's life and career. There are some references to other Sanjay Dutt films shown using the costumes he's wearing during filming. But it's not much. And yes. This should be the next Ranbir film you guys should watch.

In terms of how Ranbir looked n his physical transformation,it was very close to sanjay dutt irl.Hirani's style is very unique.He usually presents hard hitting topics in a comical n sometimes satirical manner but with this movie he beat around the bush a lot makin things seem a lot rosier than they were.I personally don't think Dutt's life was interesting enough to be made a movie on n y make it if u think u wudn't have as much creative freedom?!It's a decent watch nevertheless.Ranbir did his best.Vicky kaushal was top notch.You guys can skip it though..

Nawaz also praised him in early 2010s when he said look Ranbir he is in different train because he is from filmy family but he chose to do different commercial movies not masala ,action stuff .

There are lot of backgroud information you need to know before you watch this. His parents are Nargis and Sunil Dutt whom you have seen in Mother India. Also there are scenes from Munna Bhai series. You can definitely watch Vastaav and Munna Bhai (2 movies) before watching Sanju.

I always used to think that Ranbir should get justice on this channel. He is an actor par excellence. Just mind blowing he is with each of his performances. Also he is a great dancer with awesome looks 💕💕
When you say Ranbir is not on the level as nawaz (i think a little overrated), pankaj (really good!), you also need to understand that ranbir is a quintessentiaal bollywood hero as well - Ranbir for eg is superb dancer. Watch "battameez dil" for eg. So he has to work within certain boundaries. If he were to do lets say a raman raghav 2.0, it will count as a massive flop and will affect his standing. He looked and acted really well in Anurag's Bombay velvet as well and that was a huge flop. His family name sometimes works against him

A few Sanjay Dutt movies I'd really recommend watching (since they are referenced in Sanju) are Rocky and Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (and Lage Raho Munna Bhai). Apart from those, Saajan (with Salman Khan) Vaastav, Khalnayak (the villain), Sadak (1, not 2) and Dus (with Pankaj Kapur (Shahid's dad) and little B) are unmissible.
Btw, did u know that "Ranveer Singh" was the first choice for this role and not Ranbir ? But the director convinced the producers so much that they finally casted Ranbir Kapoor for the role of Sanjay Dutt.
I'd say re-watch the Airlift and Padman trailers of Akshay Kumar. You saw them very early and have yet to watch the movies. A couple of Great recent movies plus you'll get to see the serious, dramatic side of Akshay.

The problem is here in India, there is a clear differentiation between a character based actor and a star lead. Neeraj, Pankaj, and Nawaz all of whom you put in the top tier of acting, however good they might act, are not the so called "stars" of bollywood. I still remember when Super 30 came out and Pankaj was in it, I was so hyped that he would play the lead since he closely resembled Anand Kumar, only to find out later that he was playing a supporting role, and Hrithik was the lead. Brilliant Acting and "Bollywood Stars" who can pull in audience, are (sadly) still considered binary in Bollywood. Films that have them in the lead (LunchBox, The Photograph) are critcally acclaimed but underperform commercially. Even films like Wasseypur was okay in the box office and gained momentum when it came out on DVD or online (OTT platforms). The very nature of masala Bollywood prevent the histrionic that make acting, good acting. In recent times though, actors like Aayushman, Vicky, Rajkumar are starting to close that gap and hopefully, in future we'll have a community which might more write stories with brilliant actors in lead instead of bracketing them as "parallel cinema".

Ranbir has pulled off dozens of thespianatic roles in a way only he can, along with mainstream masala flicks; while I can't imagine Nawaz, Tripathi etc pulling off a mainstream movie ever. It's a very casual take to think the supporting actors as Gods & the mainstream stars as non actors. If mainstream acting was that easy, Nawaz would have been a superstar; but he isn't because he can't pull it off. Ranbir along with other mainstream stars such as SRK, Amitabh, Dilip Kumar have a wider range, and are also better in many ways

If not movies, you should watch some Sanjay Dutt songs / interviews to see his body language and demeanor. It will help you appreciate Ranbir more in the movie. Not a big fan of this movie but Ranbir's acting was certainly phenomenal.

Glad you finally reacted to something where you can appreciate Ranbir’s talent instead of doubting him.....You need to give a chance to his cousins Karishma and Kareena too, they’re also excellent actors........Of course they had to do their fair share of bad movies for different reasons but in all of them, they made their mark and Karishma’s phenomenal performances in films like Zubeida, Shakti...the Power, Fiza is unparalleled, in addition to being a great dancer.....Kareena too has given some excellent performances.....Her name is also always mentioned and chosen as good actress on all the shows and it was only after Priyanka went West and Kareena continued taking a back seat and rejecting the great roles, did people start taking PCs name out of admiration.

You need to watch few Sanjay dutt movies before watching this one. Specially Munna Bhai, Vastav, Khalnayak. Just to know the body language and the personality of Sanjay Dutt. Then you will definitely appreciate the effort put in by Ranbir.

Ranbir became the greatest A list actor of bollywood within 5 years of his debut. All the praise you hear about him on KWK are pre 2018. Sanju came in 2018 and it's just another addition to his legendary status, nothing else.

Guys, for starters, hope by now u know that Sanjay Dutt is the son of Sunil Dutt (Padosan, Mother India) & Nargis Dutt (Mother India & u've reacted to ton of her songs with Raj Kapoor) in b&w. Before watching Sanju, it'll be good if u see at least 2-3 films of Sanjay Dutt (Munnabhai Series a must) so that you understand his transformations better.

So true. The film wasn't a properly done biopic, nor a good comedy drama. Apart from the stellar cast and to an extent Hirani's Direction, it was a run of the mill movie for box office success.
While I'm quite aware of the popular opinion (and the MASSIVE box office numbers), this movie was all kinds of bad. Bad acting, caricatured the whole thing, a talented guy like RK completely blowing it, not to mention the blatant whitewashing of Sanjay Dutt's deeds almost to the point of monumental stupidity. It was clear from the trailer itself that this is probably a very expensive whitewashing exercise and the gamble paid off! The only positive from this movie was Vicky Kaushal. That guy can do no wrong. He ran away with the film I believe.

You guys have no idea how underrated Ranbir is. He is our Jake Gyllenhaal. He could have been easily a chocolate boy and thats what he was offered mostly and initially he looked and acted like just another star kid but with Rockstar, Tamasha and Sanju he won everyone over. I was never his fan and didnt like his early work until he did Wake up Sid. But i think it was Tamasha that changed everything for me.
Definitely watch Munnna Bhai MBBS before this film. Because this film explores how that film changed Sanjay Dutt's life and career. There are some references to other Sanjay Dutt films shown using the costumes he's wearing during filming. But it's not much.
And yes. This should be the next Ranbir film you guys should watch.

The movie itself was not good, but Ranbir’s acting was awesome.
In terms of how Ranbir looked n his physical transformation,it was very close to sanjay dutt irl.Hirani's style is very unique.He usually presents hard hitting topics in a comical n sometimes satirical manner but with this movie he beat around the bush a lot makin things seem a lot rosier than they were.I personally don't think Dutt's life was interesting enough to be made a movie on n y make it if u think u wudn't have as much creative freedom?!It's a decent watch nevertheless.Ranbir did his best.Vicky kaushal was top notch.You guys can skip it though..

This film is more of a fantasy rather than a biopic because a lot of stuff hasn't been shown in the film and some of the stuff has been kinda stylised.
There are lot of backgroud information you need to know before you watch this. His parents are Nargis and Sunil Dutt whom you have seen in Mother India. Also there are scenes from Munna Bhai series. You can definitely watch Vastaav and Munna Bhai (2 movies) before watching Sanju.

The movie is really well made and worth a watch. But for reality check it is just a whitewash.
When you say Ranbir is not on the level as nawaz (i think a little overrated), pankaj (really good!), you also need to understand that ranbir is a quintessentiaal bollywood hero as well - Ranbir for eg is superb dancer. Watch "battameez dil" for eg.
So he has to work within certain boundaries. If he were to do lets say a raman raghav 2.0, it will count as a massive flop and will affect his standing. He looked and acted really well in Anurag's Bombay velvet as well and that was a huge flop. His family name sometimes works against him

After watching this movie I actually had to remind myself what Sanjay Dutt looks like.
A few Sanjay Dutt movies I'd really recommend watching (since they are referenced in Sanju) are Rocky and Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (and Lage Raho Munna Bhai). Apart from those, Saajan (with Salman Khan) Vaastav, Khalnayak (the villain), Sadak (1, not 2) and Dus (with Pankaj Kapur (Shahid's dad) and little B) are unmissible.

The problem is here in India, there is a clear differentiation between a character based actor and a star lead. Neeraj, Pankaj, and Nawaz all of whom you put in the top tier of acting, however good they might act, are not the so called "stars" of bollywood. I still remember when Super 30 came out and Pankaj was in it, I was so hyped that he would play the lead since he closely resembled Anand Kumar, only to find out later that he was playing a supporting role, and Hrithik was the lead. Brilliant Acting and "Bollywood Stars" who can pull in audience, are (sadly) still considered binary in Bollywood. Films that have them in the lead (LunchBox, The Photograph) are critcally acclaimed but underperform commercially. Even films like Wasseypur was okay in the box office and gained momentum when it came out on DVD or online (OTT platforms). The very nature of masala Bollywood prevent the histrionic that make acting, good acting. In recent times though, actors like Aayushman, Vicky, Rajkumar are starting to close that gap and hopefully, in future we'll have a community which might more write stories with brilliant actors in lead instead of bracketing them as "parallel cinema".
Watch some Sanjay Dutt movies first. I'd suggest Vaastav, then Munnabhai MBBS, then Lage Raho Munnabhai, and then Sanju.
