Explore the mysterious mangroves of Bintan Island
Today, we will lead you to explore the mysterious mangroves of Bintan Island, Indonesia-a beautiful corner acclaimed as a blessed haven. The mangroves are only a five-minute drive from the BBT (Bandar Bentan Telani) ferry terminal, with an entrance fee of 300,000 Indonesian Rupiah. In 2003, it was honored with the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Gold Award.
This mangrove forest holds endless mysteries waiting for us to explore and discover. As we stroll along the coastline, dense green trees often come into view. During high tide, they are submerged in seawater, creating a unique and spectacular sight when revealed during low tide.
The mangroves serve as both "coastal guardians" against wind and waves and "filters" purifying seawater. They also function as a "fish and shrimp paradise" and a "bird haven," contributing indispensably to maintaining biodiversity. As one of the most diverse marine ecosystems in tropical and subtropical coastal zones, mangroves play an irreplaceable role in ensuring the ecological security of coastal areas.
During the Southeast Asian tsunami in 2004, Bintan Island miraculously escaped, thanks to the mangroves acting as a natural barrier, preventing tidal erosion. Consequently, locals consider this mangrove forest as a place blessed by the divine.
Navigating through this mangrove area in a small boat feels like an adventurous exploration of the Amazon River.
Mangroves have numerous breathing roots, enabling them to respire even when submerged in seawater during high tide. These breathing roots come in various types, such as stilt roots, ribbon roots, pencil roots, and knee roots, each with distinct shapes.
