  • Hey Skaters! Today I am going to be going over Mohawk turns with you. This is the first of many turns you will want to learn on the ice. It really helps to have some good hip turnout, so be sure to stretch before this one!

      One of my first times skating I got on right after the zamboni and tried to work on my waltz jumps and i cant remember what happened but I ended up falling backwards and hitting my head really hard.
      I got up, laughed, and kept on skating.
      dont put yourself at risk but dont be afraid to take a fall and get right back up and try again :)

    I just found your channel and am very impressed at the detail, quality, and general helpfulness of your teaching! I recently wanted to begin an intermediate class but was told by the instructor that I'd have to be at an ISI 'beta level'. I had no idea what that was, but after checking I am finding that your videos so far seem to be teaching everything I need to know. Thanks again! :-)

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You are welcome! Beta is the third level, with backward stroking, backward crossovers and T stops. After that you learn 3 turns (tutorial coming soon) , Bunny hops, Lunges, Mohawks, and Forward edges, all of which I have tutorials for. So once you have Beta down, you can start learning Gamma and Delta levels here as well! 😁

    I'll be practicing this tomorrow, thank you for the tutorial!
    I really need to learn to do some turns haha, I've only been taught a 2 foot turn in my group lessons and I don't really think they're used much beyond when you're just learning to go backwards right? I can't do them if I'm going faster than barely moving and when I do them I always stop unless I go straight into a swizzle :^) Hope to see a 3 turn tutorial when you're back on the ice

    • @CoachJulia

      That three turn tutorial is on my list to do right away when I get back in skates, 😁

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Practice gliding after the two foot 180 degree turn. Skate forward, do the turn, glide backwards three seconds, then two foot turn back forwards and glide three seconds again. Count the seconds. That will encourage you to learn how to do the two foot turn without killing your momentum. Do 30 two foot turns every practice session and you will get better. If you can skate forward, turn, glide backwards for three seconds, turn again, and glide forwards for three seconds, that is pretty good maintaining of momentum and you will get better from there. I learned the two foot turn by starting with a T stop. Glide forward with your left foot straight and with all your weight on your left foot, then turn your right foot toes out and behind your left foot and scrape the outside toe edge of the right foot on the ice. If you are good at that, use that position to lead you into the two foot turn. That was the key for me. After I did that I worked on keeping the feet close together during the turn. I think the key is that 1: Your left foot needs to lead your right, that is, it needs to be further ahead than your right. 2: Your right (trailing) foot needs to scrape on the outside toe edge. That is the main key and if you are in a T stop position that's exactly what you are doing, scraping the outside edge of that right foot, which puts you in a good position to do the turn and scrape the outside edge of that trailing (right) foot. If you hit the inside edge of that trailing foot you get all sorts of havoc...I think that's the main key. Also, of course, when you are moving forward and you want to two foot turn to backwards you put your weight on the balls of your feet and lift the heel of the blades. When you are moving backwards and want to two foot turn to forwards, you put the weight on the heels of the blades and left the toes. I love doing that.

      I usually start having my students skate in a circle, they take three steps, step to inside of circle, step to outside of circle, step to inside if circle, on the fourth step the do their Mohawk facing the circle. Make sure you are really properly checking your shoulders just before you Mohawk, as the check is extremely important, especially at speed.
