You only briefly touched on this but Gareth has basically a free deployment. Two of the forced characters aren't any good at all in Endgame's final 2 chapters. Sanaki and Sothe don't provide anything of value in E-4 and E-5, especially Sanaki, in my opinion. You can simply not deploy one of those two and deplot Gareth instead. In case anyone is wondering, even though Sanaki and Sothe are forced into the endgame chapters, you can choose to not deploy them. This essentially frees up a roster slot but for the first 3 parts of Endgame, there is no purpose to doing this (except keeping them safe if they keep dying) but for the final 2 parts of Endgame, you can have those two sit on the bench and deploy Gareth and Nasir instead.
Actually Sanaki with a bit of investment from her join time, which is not hard on the map she is forced in due to the tough enemies can be pretty useful here. Her low HP is the problem, but I almost never have her die here. Though what I usually do when I get to the blessing point for my mages is hand out artillery tomes and suddenly their safe from almost anything, can staff bot all I want, and even cause heavy damage to the boss from long distance which cripples the damage her AOE attacks can do. Before that I just make sure to apply common sense in my movement for my army marching order. Yes mages can make maps take longer due to their lower movement, but they can also speed it up once they can physic. Sanaki is the one mage in the game though who just doesn't heal. Which does kill her utility compared to ANYONE else. In addition I will also say this in Garrett's defense: Pelleas and Sephiran are NG+ run units only with allot of specific demands on getting them(Sephiran has allot of those demands anyway). Garrett and Nasir are not. You get them for free by not blasting them. In Sanaki's case I make her usable by giving her a meteor tome. Then sit her on ward tiles so she resists the divine field AOEs. Problem is mostly solved there. Also keep a fortify staff and suddenly you can heal most of your army, Garrett included without worry if their even semi close.

Only thing I would add on is that blood tide further stacks with Nasir's white pool, which helps units double attack more with the blood tide boost. Nasir/Gareth/Ena all become more useful as they really complement each other for the last map.
I looked at this, and thought "man, Mangs made a shitpost about Gareth being his waifu, this'll be good", and then proceeded to do a double take as I realized this wasn't Mangs, it was Mekkah, and that this mostly wasn't a shitpost.
Well at least there's some good news: with the Tear Ring Saga tier list on the subreddit right now, we've got a brand new tiering format which is a whole lot better. Instead of ordering units linearly in relation to each other, we're looking at each unit one at a time and placing them into one of the various tiers. So if we ever tier RD again and we use this format, Gareth will be avenged!
I cannot wait for the day that Mekkkah makes a WAIFU video on a female character and a bunch of randoms come flooding in expecting some kind of waifu tribute video and instead get some high-quality unit gameplay analysis.

Pwrplus5 that’s a different case. Gareth has under appreciated traits that people talk down about. Nino doesn’t have anything particular that’s under appreciated and she’s more overhyped than under appreciated. Nino can be used, but she’s not useless. Useless and under appreciated are two matters entirely.

The other day I fought Ashera and brought Gareth along remembering this video, and he helped quite a bit. He even survived Ashera's judge attack when transformed with wardwood and pure water boosts. Keeping Gareth alive wasn't any harder than keeping my defensively frail units alive when Ashera used her physical attack.
Looks like that offhand comment about Whoisthisgit’s video on Gareth from the POR maniac mode playthrough got a large scale response. I respect both his and your response on this topic, as you both make points to demonstrate his unique uses and weaknesses as a unit.
I was really surprised to see this, Gareth seemed to check a lot of your boxes for a bad unit (terrible availability and poor match ups against the units he does get to fight). But after watching the video I was surprised to learn that he was a lot more useful than I always thought he was, the Tellius series is one of my favorites so I am happy to learn something new about its units.
Been waiting for the next episode after Canas. I was definitely in the camp of thinking Gareth was a bad unit for when he joins but when you compare him to those forced on you he's pretty good by comparison. Funny though that a beast of a physical tank is stuck being the support for the time he's available. Whoisthisgit is right on the fact that if Gareth joined earlier basically all physical units would have been easy pickings for him though that wouldn't make sense narrative wise.
Man, Radiant Dawn needed to be a lot less stingy with deployment in the endgame with how many characters there are. It's like New Mystery of the Emblem giving you 6 deployment slots for a midgame chapter.

I remember hearing you talk about Gareth being useful and I was so surprised cause it seemed like any late-game character who needs babying to be good is one you deem bad. But, I suppose your reasoning does show that Gareth doesn't need as much babying as say an Est since his speed and res can pretty easily be rectified without feeding him kills. I certainly will use Gareth in future playthroughs because the Tide/Pool skills are so good, so thank you for opening my eyes to our new Red Overlord. I do have one question though. Doesn't Ashera have a honing attack that targets any single unit on the map? I could've sworn she can one round him with that without buffs. But I guess Warding, Pure Watering, and putting a unit on Spirit duty can circumvent that. Anyway, good, informative, unique video as always! You're awesome, Mekkah! :)
Yeah according to a google translated WoD her turn 2 is a magical attack targeting a single unit. It does totally wreck Gareth but apparently it can be diverted by Provoke. If you plan on taking more than 2 turns you'll probably want to put Nihil on your Provoker so they don't take damage from attacking Auras. I usually heal everyone to full with Fortify or Ashera Staff every turn so you shouldn't get worn down. I haven't tested any strats beyond turn 2 because I think with Gareth, Ena, Nasir and Rafiel anyone should be able to get a 2 turn clear but idk.
I didn't think people hated Gareth so much, Blood Tide ability is extremely good. I've always double stacked it on the final boss. Much better than characters who are forced on you like Sanaki.
StraightShooterGaming People tend to hate characters that are bad in the maps they join in. Meg is a another example of this. These characters tend to be useless in the maps they join in, so they're bound to leave a bad impression, which will be the only impression they'll ever leave, since they'll be benched afterwards.
I've never had a problem with that. As pointed out the chapter he joins can be done in one turn. And I always kill the spirits on the final stage since most of the non laguz royals do crap damage to the aura.
I do forget Pure Water and Res tiles exist. Still, I would prefer Ena who lasts 2 rounds without those things for Blood Tide. He is definitely better than Sanaki like you said.
This is late but I love what this video goes about, for an unit (Underrated in my book like shinon, damn archer discrimination) Him with a Gareth Nasir duo can three range spirits and do the cover ones like 18/20 damage x2 per attack, which is an insane amount in final chapter, even giving provoke to nasir solves the issue, as ashera will go to him and those are tame scratches to the dude. Just good provoke management and positioning do the trick, I'd like a Zihark video, as I often found zihark be laveled as a weak sMaster, but his earth support along with his adept/great speed made him one of the best units in the game
I think availability matters less in this case just because the endgame is anomalously hard in RD, and there's no significant way to cheese the game, such as warp, etc
Out of curiosity (if you even know much about him) what is your thoughts on whoisthisgit's fire emblem content? Since he has glanced on FE gameplay sometimes and he does sort of have some influence as you glanced on in the beginning of the video.
I haven't watched much cause I really do not like the way he presents his content (why the hell do I have to read a video? why are both the audio and the visuals background?) but what I've seen is either common sense ("Sophia is bad") or stuff I disagree with (prepromotes are bad, Gareth is bad).
Whoops, just found your channel and now watching all these videos. I just wish that we had a few more chapters to play around with Gareth and the other characters that join you endgame. I like Gareth and always use him but it's hard to get attached to a unit that you only have for a few battles.
Couldn’t agree more double bloodtide boosted urvane thwacks are the only way to deal with those auras. I forgot how much I loved the whole radiant dawn end game, each part is such a unique departure from the main story.

Isadora is in the easiest fire emblem game , she has high weapon ranks and provides high movement in a game where LTC is super easy , Mekkkah apparently loves the 3 game boy advance fire emblem because you can LTC/0%growth them reliably even in hard mode .
Normal Mode Blazing Sword ( lets say Eliwood mode ) vs Normal Mode path of Radiance ( which is actually Hard mode for NA/EU peoples ) , i would say Path of Radiance is harder but overall it is the same difficulty , hector hard mode vs Path of radiance Maniac ? i would say path of radiance maniac is harder , but those two are still easy anyway . I finished every game of the serie in the hardest difficulty possible , if you want a challenge you don't look at the GBA games or the tellius games , and before you say it , yes the dawn brigade chapters are somewhat hard . The thing is with fire emblem 6/7/8/10 , the game give you overpowered units that are rng proof , it isn't the case with fire emblem 9 , path of radiance in maniac mode , Titania only last untill about chapter 20 before being useless , And the best units in the game ( Oscar/Kierand and Jill , Ike-Ragnell ) are not rngproof and the prepromotes they give you get absolutely demolished in this game mode , the only decent prepromote besides titania and Tanith is Stefan and he is probably the biggest coin-toss unit in the game . Also the last boss of fire emblem 9 is absurdly OP if you don't give aether or resolve/wrath to ike .
Long story short - you can't say that a unit adding +5str&skill just by standing around is bad, especially if just 6 units using his buff is as if he dealt 30 damage.TBH it's quite a sad state of things as people rarely appreciate a good buffer in even MMORPG - for most a unit is supposed to heal, kill or feel (healer, DPS, tank), I've seen many awesome and unrecognized GW2 players that buffed allies, I guess too many people just analyze unit personal worth over contribution to the team, explaining why Fire Emblem noobs often bench dancers - Gareth is basically a dancer-bench level 2.
Pokemon Players: Sword dance sucks because Attacking twice does more damage Casual Fire Emblem Players: Rally Attack is not a good skill because you rather have Astra to kill units FF players: Why should I use Haste if I waste a turn that I could have casted Ultima The answer to all these is that buffs add up on later turns. Sword dances can be Baton Passed to another Pokemon and buff it to become a powerhouse. Rally Attack can affect multiple units and is a guaranteed attack increase for a turn. Haste can let you cast more spells
Didn't know Gareth was disliked that much, what a shame. That extra strength is godly, it made things so much easier on my first hard playthrough. Those spurs were no joke.
I have wondered what Gareth could do if he was available to you earlier. I have no idea how to hack Radiant Dawn though so I can only imagine... Knowing how to keep him alive is certainly useful though. Didn't think there were that many ways to do it.
my issue with gareth is pretty simple. the amount of effort he takes to use, all while in the same circumstance as some of the most powerful units to ever exist in fire emblem. sure, i can put a massive amount of effort and thought into using gareth. but on the other hand i could throw any laguz royal, haar, jill, ike heck even a reasonably stated micaiah at the final map with half the effort, and get almost the same result if not better. the only time i really see gareth as a reasonable unit, is for speed running. but 90+% of the community aren't speed runner.
You should make a WAIFU analysis of Cecilia. Cecilia is so underrated tbh, and you even acknowledged it in the Canas analysis, but I love using Cecilia ('cause mount, staves and magic with 0 investment? What's not to like?), and I like her as a character. She's a very interesting unit that gets shafted 'cause her stats look subpar (Even though they're fine, 'cause she can just move out of the way, or spam the Sleep staff if you're at B-staves)
Last time I played through Radiant Dawn I used Gareth to get double Blood Tide on my tower team that consisted of Stefan, Edward, Mia, Lucia, Zihark, Vika, Ranulf, Boyd, Mist, Tauroneo, Shinon, Ike, Micaiah, Rafiel, Sothe, Kurthnaga, Ena, and Nasir. Without Gareth's extra blood tide, the last map would have taken quite a bit longer to do, given Boyd with Urvan was my heaviest hitter. Sothe got to be on spirit clean up duty full time :) God, I hate Sothe (well, not like in the extreme, I just hate that he's a discount Volke that's forced into tower). You can also have Gareth attack, I think, on any of the low defense auras, if his hit will kill them, since I don't believe they reflect damage when hit with a killing blow. It's been over a year since I played through RD though. Gareth's still bad though, because you have to warp your party strategy around him, rather than thoughtlessly deploying him like all of your other, strong units. But I would agree that there's no point in not using him. The game is supposed to be about strategy and adapting to the unexpected (or insuring the unexpected never occurs). If he were to die, I wouldn't reset for him. ;_; sad but true. He's literally just some extra tough meat to help you kill god.
The problem isn't that Gareth is a bad unit, it's that he needs to compete with all your other units that you've trained up and know how to use. All of your points are valid, but he's still showing up extremely late and against the exact worst enemy type he could face. He's the right unit for the wrong job.
Is Isadora really that useful 5-6 chapters after recruitment with 0 stat boosting items n such on HHM at base? I really eanna see a video on Isadora still because i think shes a very interesting case for many reasons.
Isadora's perfectly fine. The enemies in FE7 are very weak, and even with her low con, she doubles most of the enemies, and caps spd on average. In HHM, they don't even get much better stats, they just throw more of them at you. She's in the best class in the game, has high mov and weapon ranks, and can use every weapon in the triangle. Her only issues are her low con (which is offset by her high base spd and spd growth rate) and the lack of deployment slots in HHM, but having more paladins is always better if you can afford the slots.
the low con isn't even bad because it means that her aid becomes higher. 14 aid is pretty good and if you give her a body ring, it goes down to 12 which is pretty bad because you're hampering her utility with her horse. also im pretty sure that they even gave isadora low con on purpose because the female mount formula for aid is 20 - con unlike the males which is 25 - con so im pretty sure that IS did not want her aid to be a lot lower than the others.
A Boy if she had 8 con i think it would be the best for hhm but honestly if she had 10 con i think she wouldd be almost a broken paladin. 8 con would just make hhm that much easier so i honestly think 6 is fine because she starts at 16 speed at base. 5 less con that marcus who has 11 con and speed at base. Which if you realize she has exactly 5 more speed at base than marcus but marcus has 5 more con at base. I find not every unit has to weild silver axe also. Thats why lowen, marcus, hawkeye, etc are around. But isadora is only afflicted by poor base hp i find more than anything.
She literally joins with an angelic robe in hand. Also if she had more con she would have less mounted aid, which means she'd have a harder time rescue dropping people
Deva Pein but that means 10 aid. that's horrible for her mount. fe7 enemies are really so anyway so it wont make a major difference in terms of combat. having 2 less aid however will make a major difference. she wont be able to rescue a good portion of the fe7 cast. i think it's more important to at least have good utility with your mount than slightly better combat
I mean, I understand this you are saying, and Gareth along with Ena can certainly make the endgame much easier, but, what everybody else is saying IS true. He does die easily. And while you can change that with some clever positioning and management, there are other units that do well enough or better than Gareth in that map and don’t need that much management to survive. So that’s that, I guess
You're mostly just going to be using a few of your units to fight ashra anyway, so most of those other units don't matter that much. And as he pointed out, it's very easy to take steps to make him survive and doing so costs nothing, so other units not needing them doesn't matter. Buffing your best unit is going to do you much more than bringing your 11th best combatant
Legit did not even realise Gareth was in PoR, saw him and was like "who tf is this guy trying to compete for a spot in Endgame when freaking nasir be here too" Tellius is pretty terrible with dragons, Nasir is only there for like 4 maps total across games and the two with slightly better availability are just tide bots.

I personally prefer to not field Gareth, since I already want to field all 100 of my favourite dawn brigade members. I personally have never used Gareth before.
There are some good points besides for Gareth All the other good characters are good on their own. You can save your talismans and speedwings for Gareth to make him an absolute beast, and he makes decent use of Bexp since even on hard mode, I can't rationalize wasting Bexp on characters I'll never use (but I'll use Gareth). This game does not favor power leveling 3 full teams. It favors powering a select couple out of each team. Other than that, we have Kurth, Ena, and Nasir, they all make powerful dragons with support so I don't see why not favor them and level them. Out of all these, it's Ena that's the worst. She even has some time to get stronger, but she will always be lacking outside of bringing blood tide, but hey, blood tide itself is worth bringing her. (and abusing reaper cards if ya got em.) So yeah, don't understand people saying he's such a bad character. Granted, I think they planned on making him usable earlier plus, he's the only guy who actually looks like he'd turn into a dragon.
He reminds me of Althena in FE 4. Good physical/HP bulk and strength but terrible resistance, along with their own gimmicks (Gae Bolg and ?Red Pool?). They are both ruined by low availability and the fact that all enemies in end game do magic damage.
Hey mekkkah i have a suggestion for you , can you do a WAIFU episode on Jakob/Joker from Fates , he is probably the unit who can do the most things in the entire serie very early into the game , he has the potential to get any skill thanks to marrying the avatar by chapter 9 of any route on top of his access to Cavalier ,.
This is gameplay and not story analysis. Mekkah also tends to be if the opinion that if a character is bad without their supports then they are still a bad character.
WAIFU is about underrated and overrated characters. So yes, I might feature characters that I think are bad if other people think they're good. There's a playlist at the end called unit analyses that has both WAIFU episodes, but it also has other videos before that are kinda like this but without the WAIFU name. Lyn is a good example of an overrated character that got analyzed. And thank you!
There are so many FE5 units that could deserve WAIFU's in the future. Like Salem/Seram for example. Also, I support the use of Alec, Noish, and Midir in FE4. For me: Midir > Jamke.
That can work, but it's only +5. You could do Ward + Night Tide which does about the same as putting him on a Wardwood tile (+12 res, so he survives 3 spirits that way). You do have space for 1 out of Sanaki, Sothe and Kurthnaga.
eehhhhh.... I'll say you convinced me that Gareth's worth bringing on the final chapter over Kurth but that's about it. Without him you can still clear the final chapter on very hard in 3-4 turns if you use the heron, nihil, and parity skills properly, and seeing how that's the only chapter where he sees use I can't say that I'm too impressed
Like I said at the end, I don't think Gareth is a top tier unit. I just think he's better than units that require heavy investment only to never be anything special (Pelleas, Astrid, Rolf, Sanaki, Kurthnaga) or units that cost a unit slot in endgame but are still mediocre there (Oliver, Stefan, Renning, Bastian, Volke). I think you can make a case for him against units that are pretty bad overall even if they're widely available, like Makalov, but that's a stretch.

I was definitely in the camp of thinking Gareth was a bad unit for when he joins but when you compare him to those forced on you he's pretty good by comparison. Funny though that a beast of a physical tank is stuck being the support for the time he's available. Whoisthisgit is right on the fact that if Gareth joined earlier basically all physical units would have been easy pickings for him though that wouldn't make sense narrative wise.

Man, Radiant Dawn needed to be a lot less stingy with deployment in the endgame with how many characters there are. It's like New Mystery of the Emblem giving you 6 deployment slots for a midgame chapter.

I remember hearing you talk about Gareth being useful and I was so surprised cause it seemed like any late-game character who needs babying to be good is one you deem bad. But, I suppose your reasoning does show that Gareth doesn't need as much babying as say an Est since his speed and res can pretty easily be rectified without feeding him kills. I certainly will use Gareth in future playthroughs because the Tide/Pool skills are so good, so thank you for opening my eyes to our new Red Overlord. I do have one question though. Doesn't Ashera have a honing attack that targets any single unit on the map? I could've sworn she can one round him with that without buffs. Yeah according to a google translated WoD her turn 2 is a magical attack targeting a single unit. It does totally wreck Gareth but apparently it can be diverted by Provoke. If you plan on taking more than 2 turns you'll probably want to put Nihil on your Provoker so they don't take damage from attacking Auras. I usually heal everyone to full with Fortify or Ashera Staff every turn so you shouldn't get worn down. I haven't tested any strats beyond turn 2 because I think with Gareth, Ena, Nasir and Rafiel anyone should be able to get a 2 turn clear but idk.

I didn't think people hated Gareth so much, Blood Tide ability is extremely good. I've always double stacked it on the final boss. Much better than characters who are forced on you like Sanaki.

People tend to hate characters that are bad in the maps they join in. Meg is a another example of this.
These characters tend to be useless in the maps they join in, so they're bound to leave a bad impression, which will be the only impression they'll ever leave, since they'll be benched afterwards.
It is just hard to keep him alive because all the enemies deal magical damage and rips him apart.
I've never had a problem with that. As pointed out the chapter he joins can be done in one turn. And I always kill the spirits on the final stage since most of the non laguz royals do crap damage to the aura.
I do forget Pure Water and Res tiles exist. Still, I would prefer Ena who lasts 2 rounds without those things for Blood Tide. He is definitely better than Sanaki like you said.

This is late but I love what this video goes about, for an unit (Underrated in my book like shinon, damn archer discrimination) Him with a Gareth Nasir duo can three range spirits and do the cover ones like 18/20 damage x2 per attack, which is an insane amount in final chapter, even giving provoke to nasir solves the issue, as ashera will go to him and those are tame scratches to the dude. Just good provoke management and positioning do the trick, I'd like a Zihark video, as I often found zihark be laveled as a weak sMaster, but his earth support along with his adept/great speed made him one of the best units in the game
I think availability matters less in this case just because the endgame is anomalously hard in RD, and there's no significant way to cheese the game, such as warp, etc
Out of curiosity (if you even know much about him) what is your thoughts on whoisthisgit's fire emblem content? Since he has glanced on FE gameplay sometimes and he does sort of have some influence as you glanced on in the beginning of the video.
I haven't watched much cause I really do not like the way he presents his content (why the hell do I have to read a video? why are both the audio and the visuals background?) but what I've seen is either common sense ("Sophia is bad") or stuff I disagree with (prepromotes are bad, Gareth is bad).

Whoops, just found your channel and now watching all these videos. I just wish that we had a few more chapters to play around with Gareth and the other characters that join you endgame. I like Gareth and always use him but it's hard to get attached to a unit that you only have for a few battles.

Isadora is in the easiest fire emblem game , she has high weapon ranks and provides high movement in a game where LTC is super easy , Mekkkah apparently loves the 3 game boy advance fire emblem because you can LTC/0%growth them reliably even in hard mode .

Normal Mode Blazing Sword ( lets say Eliwood mode ) vs Normal Mode path of Radiance ( which is actually Hard mode for NA/EU peoples ) , i would say Path of Radiance is harder but overall it is the same difficulty , hector hard mode vs Path of radiance Maniac ? i would say path of radiance maniac is harder , but those two are still easy anyway .
I finished every game of the serie in the hardest difficulty possible , if you want a challenge you don't look at the GBA games or the tellius games , and before you say it , yes the dawn brigade chapters are somewhat hard .
The thing is with fire emblem 6/7/8/10 , the game give you overpowered units that are rng proof , it isn't the case with fire emblem 9 , path of radiance in maniac mode , Titania only last untill about chapter 20 before being useless , And the best units in the game ( Oscar/Kierand and Jill , Ike-Ragnell ) are not rngproof and the prepromotes they give you get absolutely demolished in this game mode , the only decent prepromote besides titania and Tanith is Stefan and he is probably the biggest coin-toss unit in the game .
Also the last boss of fire emblem 9 is absurdly OP if you don't give aether or resolve/wrath to ike .

Long story short - you can't say that a unit adding +5str&skill just by standing around is bad, especially if just 6 units using his buff is as if he dealt 30 damage.TBH it's quite a sad state of things as people rarely appreciate a good buffer in even MMORPG - for most a unit is supposed to heal, kill or feel (healer, DPS, tank), I've seen many awesome and unrecognized GW2 players that buffed allies, I guess too many people just analyze unit personal worth over contribution to the team, explaining why Fire Emblem noobs often bench dancers - Gareth is basically a dancer-bench level 2.
Pokemon Players: Sword dance sucks because Attacking twice does more damage
Casual Fire Emblem Players:
Rally Attack is not a good skill because you rather have Astra to kill units
FF players: Why should I use Haste if I waste a turn that I could have casted Ultima
The answer to all these is that buffs add up on later turns. Sword dances can be Baton Passed to another Pokemon and buff it to become a powerhouse. Rally Attack can affect multiple units and is a guaranteed attack increase for a turn. Haste can let you cast more spells

my issue with gareth is pretty simple. the amount of effort he takes to use, all while in the same circumstance as some of the most powerful units to ever exist in fire emblem.
sure, i can put a massive amount of effort and thought into using gareth. but on the other hand i could throw any laguz royal, haar, jill, ike heck even a reasonably stated micaiah at the final map with half the effort, and get almost the same result if not better.
the only time i really see gareth as a reasonable unit, is for speed running. but 90+% of the community aren't speed runner.
You should make a WAIFU analysis of Cecilia. Cecilia is so underrated tbh, and you even acknowledged it in the Canas analysis, but I love using Cecilia ('cause mount, staves and magic with 0 investment? What's not to like?), and I like her as a character. She's a very interesting unit that gets shafted 'cause her stats look subpar (Even though they're fine, 'cause she can just move out of the way, or spam the Sleep staff if you're at B-staves)

Last time I played through Radiant Dawn I used Gareth to get double Blood Tide on my tower team that consisted of Stefan, Edward, Mia, Lucia, Zihark, Vika, Ranulf, Boyd, Mist, Tauroneo, Shinon, Ike, Micaiah, Rafiel, Sothe, Kurthnaga, Ena, and Nasir. Without Gareth's extra blood tide, the last map would have taken quite a bit longer to do, given Boyd with Urvan was my heaviest hitter. Sothe got to be on spirit clean up duty full time :) God, I hate Sothe (well, not like in the extreme, I just hate that he's a discount Volke that's forced into tower). You can also have Gareth attack, I think, on any of the low defense auras, if his hit will kill them, since I don't believe they reflect damage when hit with a killing blow. It's been over a year since I played through RD though.
Gareth's still bad though, because you have to warp your party strategy around him, rather than thoughtlessly deploying him like all of your other, strong units. But I would agree that there's no point in not using him. The game is supposed to be about strategy and adapting to the unexpected (or insuring the unexpected never occurs). If he were to die, I wouldn't reset for him. ;_; sad but true. He's literally just some extra tough meat to help you kill god.
The problem isn't that Gareth is a bad unit, it's that he needs to compete with all your other units that you've trained up and know how to use. All of your points are valid, but he's still showing up extremely late and against the exact worst enemy type he could face. He's the right unit for the wrong job.

Is Isadora really that useful 5-6 chapters after recruitment with 0 stat boosting items n such on HHM at base?
I really eanna see a video on Isadora still because i think shes a very interesting case for many reasons.
Isadora's perfectly fine. The enemies in FE7 are very weak, and even with her low con, she doubles most of the enemies, and caps spd on average.
In HHM, they don't even get much better stats, they just throw more of them at you.
She's in the best class in the game, has high mov and weapon ranks, and can use every weapon in the triangle.
Her only issues are her low con (which is offset by her high base spd and spd growth rate) and the lack of deployment slots in HHM, but having more paladins is always better if you can afford the slots.
the low con isn't even bad because it means that her aid becomes higher. 14 aid is pretty good and if you give her a body ring, it goes down to 12 which is pretty bad because you're hampering her utility with her horse. also im pretty sure that they even gave isadora low con on purpose because the female mount formula for aid is 20 - con unlike the males which is 25 - con so im pretty sure that IS did not want her aid to be a lot lower than the others.
A Boy if she had 8 con i think it would be the best for hhm but honestly if she had 10 con i think she wouldd be almost a broken paladin. 8 con would just make hhm that much easier so i honestly think 6 is fine because she starts at 16 speed at base. 5 less con that marcus who has 11 con and speed at base.
Which if you realize she has exactly 5 more speed at base than marcus but marcus has 5 more con at base. I find not every unit has to weild silver axe also. Thats why lowen, marcus, hawkeye, etc are around. But isadora is only afflicted by poor base hp i find more than anything.

Also if she had more con she would have less mounted aid, which means she'd have a harder time rescue dropping people
Deva Pein but that means 10 aid. that's horrible for her mount. fe7 enemies are really so anyway so it wont make a major difference in terms of combat. having 2 less aid however will make a major difference. she wont be able to rescue a good portion of the fe7 cast. i think it's more important to at least have good utility with your mount than slightly better combat

I mean, I understand this you are saying, and Gareth along with Ena can certainly make the endgame much easier, but, what everybody else is saying IS true. He does die easily. And while you can change that with some clever positioning and management, there are other units that do well enough or better than Gareth in that map and don’t need that much management to survive. So that’s that, I guess
You're mostly just going to be using a few of your units to fight ashra anyway, so most of those other units don't matter that much. And as he pointed out, it's very easy to take steps to make him survive and doing so costs nothing, so other units not needing them doesn't matter. Buffing your best unit is going to do you much more than bringing your 11th best combatant

Tellius is pretty terrible with dragons, Nasir is only there for like 4 maps total across games and the two with slightly better availability are just tide bots.

Maria's not THAT bad but all she really has going for her is a bit of staff EXP. But she's not underrated or anything.
I personally prefer to not field Gareth, since I already want to field all 100 of my favourite dawn brigade members. I personally have never used Gareth before.

There are some good points besides for Gareth
All the other good characters are good on their own. You can save your talismans and speedwings for Gareth to make him an absolute beast, and he makes decent use of Bexp since even on hard mode, I can't rationalize wasting Bexp on characters I'll never use (but I'll use Gareth). This game does not favor power leveling 3 full teams. It favors powering a select couple out of each team.
Other than that, we have Kurth, Ena, and Nasir, they all make powerful dragons with support so I don't see why not favor them and level them. Out of all these, it's Ena that's the worst. She even has some time to get stronger, but she will always be lacking outside of bringing blood tide, but hey, blood tide itself is worth bringing her. (and abusing reaper cards if ya got em.)
So yeah, don't understand people saying he's such a bad character. Granted, I think they planned on making him usable earlier

He reminds me of Althena in FE 4. Good physical/HP bulk and strength but terrible resistance, along with their own gimmicks (Gae Bolg and ?Red Pool?). They are both ruined by low availability and the fact that all enemies in end game do magic damage.

Hey mekkkah i have a suggestion for you , can you do a WAIFU episode on Jakob/Joker from Fates , he is probably the unit who can do the most things in the entire serie very early into the game , he has the potential to get any skill thanks to marrying the avatar by chapter 9 of any route on top of his access to Cavalier ,.

WAIFU is about underrated and overrated characters. So yes, I might feature characters that I think are bad if other people think they're good. There's a playlist at the end called unit analyses that has both WAIFU episodes, but it also has other videos before that are kinda like this but without the WAIFU name. Lyn is a good example of an overrated character that got analyzed. And thank you!

There are so many FE5 units that could deserve WAIFU's in the future. Like Salem/Seram for example.
Also, I support the use of Alec, Noish, and Midir in FE4. For me: Midir > Jamke.

That can work, but it's only +5. You could do Ward + Night Tide which does about the same as putting him on a Wardwood tile (+12 res, so he survives 3 spirits that way). You do have space for 1 out of Sanaki, Sothe and Kurthnaga.
might as well since there's a free slot and no big downside to deploying kurth just for support, especially compared to useless sothe and sanaki..
eehhhhh.... I'll say you convinced me that Gareth's worth bringing on the final chapter over Kurth but that's about it. Without him you can still clear the final chapter on very hard in 3-4 turns if you use the heron, nihil, and parity skills properly, and seeing how that's the only chapter where he sees use I can't say that I'm too impressed
Like I said at the end, I don't think Gareth is a top tier unit. I just think he's better than units that require heavy investment only to never be anything special (Pelleas, Astrid, Rolf, Sanaki, Kurthnaga) or units that cost a unit slot in endgame but are still mediocre there (Oliver, Stefan, Renning, Bastian, Volke). I think you can make a case for him against units that are pretty bad overall even if they're widely available, like Makalov, but that's a stretch.
