I believe this match happened on an earlier version of this map, which is why some movements look bizarre (infantry moving through pipes, Bboat going through bridges). The replay viewer uses the current map version which added these terrain features which weren't present when the match actually happened.
yeah, this is very likely. i was looking into it and the game was ended on the nov 19, but in the comments it was noted there was at least an edit around the 18th and 23rd. so im guess the map creator was watching the map while it was going on and decided to change things up to keep the BB in check.
Yeah I was thinking huh can black boats move on bridges now because this is weird. Glad this comment explained though. Those BB's from Elagatua were something else though and I would wager he picked Sami because of just black boat mobility being so OP on the old map.
as others have pointed out, this was played on an earlier version of the map, and neverlocke was kind enough to humor my idea of a practice match to see if my strategy concept would be effective. my original idea was that the HQ bboat is so effective for center access, that sami can guarantee a capture of the opponent's COM tower, and then force fights around the middle since the opponent will be needing that tower back. and if sami's opponent ever removes the bboat from the HQ, then a front shift to take the HQ is basically undefendable for sami's opponent. neverlocke wisely thwarted my plans by sacrificing a lot of early utility by leaving the bboat on the HQ but in the end the game long income advantage was a lot to overcome. the map was adjusted shortly after this match, so apologies to everyone who wanted to see the original version make the GL rotation!
Hachi might be bald underneath the hat but he has side burns so I think Orange Star needs a Bald CO. 😄 Any chance you might do a follow up video on Wargroove 2, such as its meta or current balance at some point?
16:03 black boats go on roads?! 11:51 mechs on the pipes?! 10:26 black boats going under a bridge?! 10:58 artillery move like it has extrea move?! what?! edit: ok so apparently, it might be a case of a _pre-update_ match being shown on a _post-update_ map, some tiles have changed explaining the discrepancies/anomalous moves.
Haha gald I'm not the only one who noticed. I'm hearing Mangs say "If only boats could go under bridges" at 7:41 as I look at a Black Boat that somehow got on the opposite side of the bridge. Edit: and then at 8:23 it goes right through the bridge lol
That was actually really well played by Elagatua. The early capture of the enemy Comm Tower combined with the Recon spam cased Neverlocke to over-focus on taking it back, while Elagatua focused on stalling and picking off his infantry. That early firepower advantage from both towers helped Elagatua punch through Neverlocke's weak side more effectively, while also allowing him to stall out Neverlocke's attempt to recapture it just a bit longer. In the end, Neverlocke didn't have enough infantry on the frontlines of his strongside to secure the HQ capture, especially with the fire support from the Battleship. The Port's position means that only two direct attackers can hit the Battleship, and even with Hyper Upgrade, a full HP Tank does 0-7% damage per attack, which is repaired back on Elagatua's turn. It would be another 2 Turns before his Medium Tank could attack the Battleship, but by then Elagatua's Artillery would have destroyed the defensive Black Boat on his HQ. Neverlocke realized this, and knew he couldn't win the race due to needing to footslog more Infantry to the frontlines, and by the time they would have arrived, Elagatua would have capped his HQ.
@emdivine yep! Known replay viewer bug, it caches an old version of the map and won't make sure it's still accurate when loading a new replay on the same map.
Awesome! Great to see a Sami game where she actually wins. The Battleship was the final nail in the coffin, but the real day saver this game were those amazing transport and supply lines with the Black Boats holy crap.
I was hyped by the bboat moving through bridges, but no :( 8:24 Mangs looking at this sus bboat on a river, seeing that something is off, and finally virtually shruging and going "nah, it's not a sea tile, it's a river actually so you can load units" is hilarious
It is important to bring up that Sami stealing the com tower is crucial because she can now reliably destroy units, and that is brutal for Andy, who needs to keep all his units alive.
I am so glad Mangs introduced so many people (myself included) to AWBW. I don't even play but have been obsessed with watching top level play. The gamecasts add a lot to a match but I have gotten hooked on watching people like Rip_, Elagatua, Go7, and Lord_Clefairy play different matches on the site as well.
So I randomly stumbled upon one of your videos a few months ago. And since then i stopped by every once in a while to watch a video and this whole time ive had no idea what was going on in game. Just liked the game I guess. After MONTHS I finally decided to try the game out and I stayed up all night last night until 5 am playing lol. Cant wait to learn a lot more about the game I am currently getting my butt kicked in a 3 star mission. Anyways, thanks for getting me into the game Mangs
Was the replay viewer showing an older version of the map somehow? There's no way black boats can move through bridges and rivers, or infantry moving through pipe tiles
Came here to comment on the many movement oddities in the map, glad to see the community is so on-the-money on these things (and that my guess, a map change between play and commentary, was the culprit). A great if sometimes baffling watch.
yeah, im guessing the game was played on an old version of the map, and that pipe section might of been a mountain. based on how infantry could move over it but vehicles avoided it.
Driving something on a beach is not easy... For the most part, yes. I believe there are exceptions though, this mostly boils down to the dirt's/sands chemical and physical state, and another factor. How compacted is the beach? How much moisture has the ground absorbed? Is it actually all sand and not some gravel under the layer of sand? How much has the beach sand gotten to set onto it's place? Another key to this discussion is: Weight of the vehicle. Considering that we are talking about Recon unit of Advanced Wars, it is safe to assume that the vehicle is very light, enough sturdy construction to take small arms fire (mainly assaults rifles, handguns etc.) You can make surprisingly sturdy equipment without increasing the weight of the vehicle and weight distribution to the points where it touches the ground. Sorry, that statement just prompted me to think about it.
Title spoils the video. Map was edited so a lot of strange things happening (black boat moving across bridges and onto a road next to the hq and a few infantry/mech movements). Overall, this made for a very strange viewing experience 🤔
mangs i must say im always excited when you get excited about things. i love your content and its always a pleasure to watch these. Ty for your hard work
I can highly recommend all the people here taking a look at some of elgatua´s videos. They are insanely detailed and thus are quite long, but you learn so much about Advance Wars.
Neverlocke saw the Battleship AND copter, then realized there wasn't enough to surround the HQ cap. Next turn, Elagatua would have shelled the HQ, copter was in range to clean up the remainder of the HP, or reduced to 1 is "best case" and broke the Black Boat and began capping Neverlocke's own HQ. MAX time left was 2 days due to capping Neverlocke's HQ, all without the ability to cover the Blue HQ at all
Ooh, Mangs, I wonder if Sonya would be any good on this map? Her Recon should be able to scout out TWO of the opponent's bases at the start of the game! That can be a pretty sizable information advantage!
At the end, Andy had no way to deal with the BS and the BC, at least not in time. No AA, no fighter, and no indirect anywhere close. Meanwhile, on the opposite side, that black boat was about dead and there was no other unit capable of defending the HQ. Only one way I can see this going. With a tank on the harbour, a battleship wasn't an option. Now, it would have been funny if Samy's BS hadn't been scouted... "Surprise!"
Fun video and nice to see more of Sami. One thing I would recommend is to not tell us who subitted the replay to you. This is because most of the time the winner of the game is the one who will subitt it, and that spoils the result.
Andy: Wait, armies wear specific colored uniforms so they know who the enemy is? I always just killed the units that were facing the wrong way! I wondered why Olaf wasn't trying to drown me in a snow bank.
I also love how he refuted your claim that Sami has (almost) no defense against Medium Tanks. I mean you get to use *5 1/3 mechs* to counter their value advantage...
Not using the black boat seemed like a huge mistake to me. Look at the insane capture advantage Elegatua got in the first few turns, including getting both comm towers without a fight and a big income lead. It was game over right there.
100% there is something fucky going on with the replay viewer here a mech stops on a pipe the black boat is on a road at the end and there is an infantry walking through a pipe at 4:24
"I've been casting a lot of Sami lately... completely by accident I promise you..." Yeah, and I definitely clicked on the Sami thumbnail completely by accident, I promise you. 😅 On a serious note though, Sami games are fun since it's pretty interesting to see how players circumvent her downsides, and a rare chance to see mechs actually be useful. Edit: Oh wow, that was a premature resign imo, he could've hyper upgraded and joined and took a gamble...
no, there were no changes to black boats. Mangs has a newer version of the map. It's why the second ports never get captured, & infantry walk over the pipes aswell.
I believe this match happened on an earlier version of this map, which is why some movements look bizarre (infantry moving through pipes, Bboat going through bridges). The replay viewer uses the current map version which added these terrain features which weren't present when the match actually happened.
That explains why they never capped the second port, it most likely wasn't there in the original map
yeah, this is very likely. i was looking into it and the game was ended on the nov 19, but in the comments it was noted there was at least an edit around the 18th and 23rd.
so im guess the map creator was watching the map while it was going on and decided to change things up to keep the BB in check.
That would explain why the Black Boat drove onto a road at the end by the HQ.
I can't believe I didn't notice while recording. My bad!
Yeah I was thinking huh can black boats move on bridges now because this is weird. Glad this comment explained though. Those BB's from Elagatua were something else though and I would wager he picked Sami because of just black boat mobility being so OP on the old map.

"Battleships are great in the map! I'm not gonna spoil how it helped though."
The title absolutely foreshadowing. 😮
Yeah video title ruined any tension.
Mangs has joined Orange Star.
Hachi might be bald underneath the hat but he has side burns so I think Orange Star needs a Bald CO. 😄
Any chance you might do a follow up video on Wargroove 2, such as its meta or current balance at some point?
He’s joined orange egg
Profile pic checks out
@HauntedCorpseGaming Does any nation besides Comet have a bald CO
What would be his CO Power though? Invulnerable Mangs infantries while capping properties?
16:03 black boats go on roads?! 11:51 mechs on the pipes?! 10:26 black boats going under a bridge?! 10:58 artillery move like it has extrea move?! what?!
edit: ok so apparently, it might be a case of a _pre-update_ match being shown on a _post-update_ map, some tiles have changed explaining the discrepancies/anomalous moves.
That explains it
That B-boat just move over a bridge 5:55? They finally made the naval unit able to move trough them?
Yeah wtf?
WHAT THE HELL???
Haha gald I'm not the only one who noticed. I'm hearing Mangs say "If only boats could go under bridges" at 7:41 as I look at a Black Boat that somehow got on the opposite side of the bridge.
Edit: and then at 8:23 it goes right through the bridge lol
@@Mangs1337lol you missed the black boat traveling through the bridges so many times.
Holy crap, yet another completely sensible change that feels like how the original gba titles should have functioned in the first place.
That was actually really well played by Elagatua. Honestly,, I don't mind the Sami content. She's insanely fun to both play and watch. Victory March can be a game changer and it's really fun
16:01 ah yes blackboat defying the physics going on a road to defend the hq
Sami showing why the Marines are a department of the Navy.
BB going over bridges, rivers, roads; infrantry walking on pipes... It sure is a crazy game, he didn't lie
Mangs wants to make Norway great again
Orange mangs bad
Sami armpits in the thumbnail, nice
Found Eagle's account
@@oof5992 that mans chronically down bad. There is no cure.
Go straight to jail.
Do not collect 200$
4:24 did that orange infantry just move THROUGH a pipe?
It sure did I was about to comment this same thing wtf happened there?
He climbed over it
apparently that's from the map being changed since the game was recorded, according to another comment
@emdivine yep! Known replay viewer bug, it caches an old version of the map and won't make sure it's still accurate when loading a new replay on the same map.

Another weird thing nobody has mentioned so far: At 10:58, an artillery uses 6 movement (5 tiles, one is a forest).
It is important to bring up that Sami stealing the com tower is crucial because she can now reliably destroy units, and that is brutal for Andy, who needs to keep all his units alive.

This was a good match. I definitely think he resigned prematurely. It was quite close
10:15 One thing I really liked about Days of Ruin was making anything with tires cost 2 move on shoals. Helped reign in recons a bit.
I really enjoy seeing a lot of Sami lately
Mangs in on his orange arc
Hello Mangs. You can pass off as Grimm if you wear an orange jumpsuit.
