    My 04 is almost 20 and still going strong. It still runs and drives better then most cars I have owned. When I tell someone it’s 20 years old, they barely believe me. But I use & Tow my boat & camp gear, but take care of my stuff. Change oil every 5-6k, Hemi SLT has well over 150k still growls like a lion, no leaks, no ticks. No dash issues, but windows tinted, dash treated to protect from the sun and also looks new still. Had some underneath rusting from when I lived up north, but now more south and fluid film it every season. Sounds like you fellows just purchase a mistreated POS from the start. But I personally couldn’t be happier with my Ram! It’s been a great truck so far. Plan on a trip out west this year and even at its age trust it totally.

      @@Diamondboi-pj2inthose things are hot potatoes, maybe you get one that has been well-maintained and if you continue to maintain it well, it will get you down the road. But in the back of my mind if I was you I would just always be constantly worrying. Change your oil every 3,000 Miles I don't care what the manual says. Make sure to regularly change your coolant, visually inspect all of your hoses, go ahead and replace your thermostat. Heat is the enemy of these engines. Same as all but this one in particular. PERSONALLY IF I WAS YOU I WOULD JUST DUMP IT. AND GET SOMETHING BETTER WHILE IT'S STILL RUNNING RIGHT. Remember horsepower doesn't do that much for a pickup truck its low-end torque you want. And the 5.9 is more reliable in spades and a hell of a lot more low-end torque. And it's easy as hell to get it up in horsepower, and still reliable

    • @seanbutler2291
      @seanbutler2291 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I'm sorry but when your engine is at 300,000 miles you can make this comment 158,000 miles is barely broken in. Don't get me wrong that's not like low miles. My 5.9 has 175,000 miles on it and it doesn't skip a beat, they regularly do well over 300,000 miles in their lifetime. That's where the comparison is made. When you go from making engines that regularly do over 300,000 miles to make an engine that is lucky to hit 200 thousand miles that's not good......

    I purchased a 04 regular cab 5.7 almost two years ago and it's the best truck I've ever owned. Being 6'5 and fitting inside, with seat adjustability is great. I haven't towed with it bc I'm fortunate enough to have a diesel truck too, but the Ram doesn't lack horsepower or torque. It'll drag any same gen ford of chevy... it will leave the light and hang with most naturally aspirated v8s out there today. She's rolling over to 195k soon and the only light on the dash is the annoying lamp out that seems to come on when it wants and turns off when it wants to. The door locks seem to work when they want too but it's not a real issue. Plenty of space under the hood compared to the chevy or ford. Overall, I'd buy one again and again just for the fun and power

    My parents bought a brand new 2004 ram 1500 regular cab. The local dodge dealer had them marked down to $12,995. It was crazy and nothing you’ll ever see again these days. Those trucks were everywhere in my area back then due to that sale. It’s msrp was $21,000. The same dealer also did the same thing with the base model caravan around the same time. We never had any problem with it as my mother just drove it around town to places she needed to go. We bought it because she needed an affordable reliable vehicle. It fit the bill. She kept it for 6 years.

    The 360 was an 02 only engine, hence the lack on the market. The 5.7 was the replacement to this engine. The 4.7 and 3.7 replaces the 5.2 and 3.9 respectively. The 360 is a great motor, however the Hemi was a clear upgrade. My father had a 02 4.7 ram, and now I have an 05 5.7, the difference in power is night and day. The 5.7 was also more fuel efficient. Getting about 15mpg combined vs 13 in his 4.7. (However I agree around town these trucks are pigs) The 5.7 from 03-05 was MUCH more reliable then onward. The MDS systems were a nightmare for destroying cams, I think they've corrected it as of 2014 or so, however I'll stick with the 8 cylinders all the time, might be harder on fuel, but beats tearing the motor apart.

    You're kind if misrepresenting this trucks towing capacity. A quick google search indicates that the max towing on these early 2000's Hemi Ram 1500's was around 8900lbs for specifically configured models. Modern 1/2 ton trucks today for all their advancements and power they have over this truck are barely maxing out at around 13Klbs and even then it's usually specific packages that are designed to handle the extra weight. Realistically, if you're going to be towing more than 8000lbs or so on a regular basis "multiple times a week" you need to get a 3/4 ton. 1/2 ton's are decent at towing that kind of weight once in awhile and great at towing 4 to 5K all the time.

I used a three inch intake port that y'd out to twin filters and the transmission control module flashed to a 🤔 patriot or something I can't remember but it will give you two more gears as the tranny's are 6 speed but only programmed to suit. A lot of older SUVs and trucks a huge reason your rear end locks up on you is cause of a bad leaking cheap crap pinion seal. Ugh I hate that damn cheap thing.
    Slowly mists all the gear oil out of the rear end and it can also loosen your pinion bolt and destroy that, to the whole rear end locking up. Always inspect that area you see it’s wet under there get that crappy seal replaced and inspect that pinion bearing! Everyone recommends putting on a new pinion nut getting it crimped on there plus I’d use loc tite blue for safe measures on it 👍🏼

    How can they call it a hemi? When it follows the 4.7 (semi hemi) engine. Dodge even says its not a true hemi because of the combustion chambers. So technically they could have remained in nascar being an in block cam.

    • @jesselayden9480
      @jesselayden9480 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its definitely a real hemi. The hemispherical dome in the combustion chambers aren't nearly as aggressive as the legendary 426, but it is still a hemi nonetheless.

    Shoot my '97 Ram 1500 with a 360 V8 auto has 297,650 miles on it so far and still going strong. It still has the original engine and trans, I've owned the truck for a little over 10 years now and I've put 105,000 miles on it myself. Before someone says that can't be the original trans with that many miles, it is, but not without work. The first thing I done was flush out the trans fluid after I got it, then I put an external trans cooler on it, because I don't think that the radiator trans cooler is good enough to keep the trans fluid cool enough. I've been flushing out the trans for the past 10 years and with the new fluid I also put a can of Trans X and a can of Lucas Trans Fix in it too. I flush out about a gallon of fluid each time I do it and I put in new cans of the stuff I said earlier. So far the trans is working good. Anyways I will never get rid of my truck, I'll drive it until I can drive anymore or it won't run anymore. Also not sure how many more miles I'll put on it but time will tell.

    • @theramquest4advanture.
      @theramquest4advanture. 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh and I did change the fluid and filter on the trans about 6 or 7 years ago, but all the other times I've been flushing it out. I watched a video on TH-cam showing how to do it. I took a trans line loose, put a hose on it and put the other part of the hose in a bucket. As the old fluid comes out I would put the new fluid in a long with the cans of the other stuff. I would flush out about a gallon of fluid each time. Been doing this like I've said for a little over 10 years now and I've gotten 105,000 more mile out of the truck myself. I would do the flushing every 30,000 miles or so many months. If you take care of them they will last. Oh and the external trans coolers help to keep the trans cool too.

  • @chrismcnally9006
    @chrismcnally9006 ปีที่แล้ว

    You mentioned this a few times and it really needs to be made clear: the max towing is NOT 13,500 lbs on that truck! The combined weight of the truck, occupants, fuel and trailer is 13,500 lbs. The max tow rating is closer to 8,200 lbs for the HEMI, since you have the 20" wheels.

    The 5.9 360 is extremely rare in this body style Ram. It waa abailable only in 02 and VERY EARLY 03 before the 5.7 HEMI replaced it for the rest of its run.
    I dont get the hate on the 4.7. My uncle has one with high 200k mi (maybe over 300k mi now havent askes him in a while) and hes never had an issue. If you keep up with oil changes its a pretty solid little engine. If you run them with dirty oil then thats when the problems start.

  • @JacksonGuitarsPlayer03
    @JacksonGuitarsPlayer03 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The hemi actually is more reliable than the 5.9s or both the hemi and the 360 are almost equally matched in reliability actually. Both good engines. I hear older guys talk about the 5.9s saying they had good luck with them. I have as well. Proper maintenance they’ll do you well. Yeah lifters tick all V8s do. Some Cheap garbage sensors gone out on em. I never had to tear into the engine before or change gaskets at well over 200k miles with my hemi. I have bought a cheap 2002 ram with the 5.9 as another beater truck. I literally bought also other older rams with the 4.7 and the 3.7 as cheap beaters for experimenting also. Lol
    I’m actually impressed that the 5.9 one I bought for 1200$ that has 161k miles on it runs great but had coolant leaks which is a issue I gave it new hoses. The old hoses were original and a bit dry. Don’t know where it came from.

    I have a 2004 ram 1500 and live in the rust belt (Cincinnati). That being said, I bought this from my dad in Oregon. It has 98,000 miles and ZERO rust. ZERO RUST. And I also have a dash with not a single crack in it. Chrome wheels that are still chrome. Not even any rust on the wheels. The fact that I have a 20 year old ram 1500 with 4x4 and a 5 speed, less than 100k miles, no a single crack on the dash and once again ABSOLUTELY NO RUST WHATSOEVER!!! And I live in Ohio, basically means I have a unicorn lol. I’m not gonna sit here and lie and say I like this truck more than my 2014 Silverado, because I don’t. I’ll take Chevy over dodge any and every day of the week. I know that’s going to hurt some little feelings, but I don’t care. That’s just been my experience. I’ve owned every brand of truck and Silverado and Tacoma are literally the only trucks that I would buy multiple times over. Again, just my experience. With that being said, it’s pretty cool that I probably have the only 2004 ram 1500 in southern Ohio that’s 4x4, 5 speed, crack free, dent free, perfect interior, less than 100k mile, RUST FREE and as close to perfect as you can possibly get. And I’ll trade it for a decent Silverado TOMORROW if anyone is interested lmao. Seriously…..

    5.9 is far superior to the 5.7 for several reasons, bomb proof bottom end, always runs even with cracked heads, in fact most all 3.9/ 5.2/ 5.9 magnums have cracked heads, but no one but your machinist will notice!
    On the other hand, all the 3.7/4.7/5.7/6.2 like to drop valve seats! Aluminum heads and powdered metal seats don't mix!
    And Mopar did not do a proper interference fitment on the seats. Any good machinist will tell you that it's 7 though, interference fit not 4 thou! And that's why when they get heat soaked they drop out!
    If your an asshole about maintenance like me, and drive it like a truck ( not a dragster), you too can achieve 300k on the same engine! The 4 and 5 speed autos are marginal quality especially if you don't change out your atf4 on schedule; plus the internal spin on filter .( why can't they make them like the Allison with an external spin on filter?) So I own 2 4.7s, one in a 04 ram with 5 speed manual with manual shift transfer case thar the motor was junk, and my $500 dakota slt that has lasted 300k and never been opened, gets 20+ mpg highway and 17 city, don't smoke or leak except for the exaust manifolds with the famous ( mopar exaust manifolds bolt snapping off tsb)
    Truthfully I prefer the pre 74 318/ 360 LA engines, so much better design, and they are real Dodge before fiat and stellantis got involved and cheapened the quality of almost everything. I have a 78 Dodge 1 ton B300 with a 360 that's 10 times the truck that any ram will ever be, and it's a unibody! But, 360 with thermoquad, 727 transmission, Dana 60 rear with 4:11 ratio, ive hauled 3 tons in the van with another ton behind it for 4,000 miles, no issues! That's a real Dodge not the crap they make today. If you gave me a brand new one, I'd immediately sell it and buy a pre 74 or a house😂😂😂😂
