    If you ever learn the chords to an Elliott Smith song you open up a world of music. Shapes that don't appear in Mel Bay books, chromaticism that turns your ear upside down. Once you get over that hurdle you realize the songcraft involved and witness that he went to great (and often painful) lengths to perform them with equal temperament each and every time. No question that his contribution to songwriting and even his acoustic guitar technique will be around for generations.

    • @ciaraskeleton
      @ciaraskeleton 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Absolutely. It was when I went to play Angeles that I realised this. Then I listened more intently and heard the actual nuance in each song. People often dismiss his guitar skill, but it's because they haven't learned yet how much that man bent his fingers to get the most perfect subtle harmonies with each chords.
      I find it way way easier to play Elliot songs on the piano, because the chords he used on guitar are very difficult, not only that but his finger picking style for each song isn't easy either!
      It's really hard to describe, but when you said about the chromatics turning your ear upside down I knew what you meant. It takes a while to notice maybe, but it's that level of detail that makes his sound so colourful and unique and difficult to replicate.

    Everything is exactly right
    When I walk around here drunk every night
    With an open container from 7-11
    In St. Ides heaven
    I've been out haunting the neighbourhood
    And everybody can see I'm no good
    When I'm walking out between parked cars
    With my head full of stars
    High on amphetamines
    The moon is a light bulb breaking
    It'll go around with anyone
    But it won't come down for anyone
    You think you know what brings me down
    That I want those things you could never allow
    You see me smiling you think it's a frown
    Turned upside down
    ‘Cause everyone is a fucking pro
    And they all got answers from trouble they've known
    And they all got to say what you should and shouldn't do
    Though they don't have a clue
    High on amphetamines

      @@edhelvey6119 I guess it could be. I assumed it was a reference to amphetamines since the line right before is about being high on amphetamines. But obviously the song is about drinking too (“open container,” “St. Ides Heaven”), so it could be less about any one particular drug and more about the fact he’s getting f-ed up, and how people think he shouldn’t, but he won’t stop for anyone.
      I also read that someone said he was doing $1500 worth of heroin and crack a day for a period of time, in addition to a host of other things. Clearly he wasn’t afraid to mix and match.

    It seems excruciatingly apt that I'm listening to this song at a library in Phoenix while finishing my vodka drink - no malt liquor like St. Ides available here (not that I'd choose to drink it. I prefer PBR. It was good enough for Frank Booth in "Blue Velvet").

      Daniel Teer This is NOT A SONG ABOUT GETTING HIGH ON AMPHETAMINES!!!!!!!!!!!!
      This is after you cannot get high because you have been up and the effect stops. Your miserable and want to get some sleep so you can get up and get HIGH AGAIN, but you stop using and cannot sleep for another day or two.
      You drink liqueur hoping it will knock you out but it does not. Everyone is irritating because you want to sleep. And your waiting to final get some sleep.

      Daniel Teer People listen to this song and say;
      He is talking about getting high and being happy.
      NOPE.
      He is talking about being miserable and wishing for happiness that only comes with sleep.
      It is a sad song.

      Idk I found that on amphetamines, I didn't want to go to sleep. Even when I was miserably exhausted, I wanted to slam coffee or any kind of caffeine to keep me going and writing music. When I went to sleep and then woke up, is when I was miserable. Not from exhaustion or anything physical. But maybe that's just being used to mania and the similarity in how it feels for me. Thank God for being out of that insanity finally.
