"I want to curse guitarists and all music by making finger movement on the frets the loudest thing ever on any instrument" - Steel String Acoustic Guitars since the Dawn of their Inception
If you ever learn the chords to an Elliott Smith song you open up a world of music. Shapes that don't appear in Mel Bay books, chromaticism that turns your ear upside down. Once you get over that hurdle you realize the songcraft involved and witness that he went to great (and often painful) lengths to perform them with equal temperament each and every time. No question that his contribution to songwriting and even his acoustic guitar technique will be around for generations.
Absolutely. It was when I went to play Angeles that I realised this. Then I listened more intently and heard the actual nuance in each song. People often dismiss his guitar skill, but it's because they haven't learned yet how much that man bent his fingers to get the most perfect subtle harmonies with each chords. I find it way way easier to play Elliot songs on the piano, because the chords he used on guitar are very difficult, not only that but his finger picking style for each song isn't easy either! It's really hard to describe, but when you said about the chromatics turning your ear upside down I knew what you meant. It takes a while to notice maybe, but it's that level of detail that makes his sound so colourful and unique and difficult to replicate.
Everything is exactly right When I walk around here drunk every night With an open container from 7-11 In St. Ides heaven I've been out haunting the neighbourhood And everybody can see I'm no good When I'm walking out between parked cars With my head full of stars High on amphetamines The moon is a light bulb breaking It'll go around with anyone But it won't come down for anyone You think you know what brings me down That I want those things you could never allow You see me smiling you think it's a frown Turned upside down ‘Cause everyone is a fucking pro And they all got answers from trouble they've known And they all got to say what you should and shouldn't do Though they don't have a clue High on amphetamines The moon is a light bulb breaking It'll go around with anyone But it won't come down for anyone And I won't come down for anyone
