Ostrich male skin colour changes when they are ready to mate. I remember the info visiting an ostrich farm. I have noticed that Carl's legs are red. This is the indicator. In ostrich farming, a man cannot enter a field with a male ostrich in heat, but women can. It is linked to hormones.

    You are both so right!
The people that raise them for profit, don’t have a relationship with them. Just to collect eggs they use a super long scoop or drive their truck in the yard for protection.
Another farmer has had the boy since a chick. He’s able to pet and touch his feathers.
    His hens aren’t friendly.
As you both said it’s a totally individual situation.
You are like that with ALL your babies.
You get to know them and do what it takes to give them their best life.

The squatting down and rolling from side to side is a mating dance/ritual seen on many videos about ostriches. Carl's doing pretty good considering what he's going through physically (hormones etc) but also moved to a new location with different animals, sights and smells. Hard to imagine that he's only been there two weeks, feels more like two months the way he's relaxed into all the changes he's experienced and he's been so aware of the other animals and where it's safe for him to set those big talons of his.

Lester letting Carl peck on his hand, is establishing the pecking order. Carl dosen't wish to be grabbed by his neck or touched just yet. Waiting to develop trust can take awhile. Carl is adjusting, dealing with the stresses and anxieties of his new life. His neck is where he is vulnerable, and constantly grabbing for it, stresses Big Bird. Lower voices, walking with, not at, keep your hands to yourself, always have a treat or reward, and let time turn things around.

  • @christinemiller1885

Yes Carl is in all out male-mode (in-season they call it). Besides the behavior, you can tell by their red legs and their red skin on their neck & sometimes face, depending on the bird. Ours got very aggressive, to the point that I couldn't go in the pen. If I did, he'd come running full speed and try to kick me (it was his mission in life lol) and when he couldn't kick me, he'd kick the fence. It finally got so bad I just threw their feed over the fence and he'd still kick the fence. When the female was with him, it was even worse. Their dance is a ritual to attract females and show their dominance. I mentioned once that I had ostriches, they are difficult, but if anyone can figure it out, y'all can ... The aggressive males tend to stay aggressive, like a rooster that always wants to fight. Dancing in front of him is like teasing a dog, in a sense, it eggs him on. Trying to pet him is also egging him on. When they raise up like that, it's a warning you're invading their space. Our ostriches were hand raised. When we got them as yearlings, they were so much fun. You could walk with them, side-by-side, it was amazing. You could pet them ... You could even touch their legs. That ended though when they came of age. These are just my recollections, don't know if it helps any. Thanks for sharing.

  • @sandyinoregon74
    @sandyinoregon74 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I read ostriches can "fall in love" with their owner and that it is very common if the bird is raised in captivity. Wild ostrich apparently do not have that same compulsion. Strange but not unlike Cornholio humping LE's leg or flip flops. Lol

Great job Lester. Not backing down to Carl showed him that no I'm coming in so get back. I hope that Carl settles down so that for the safety of y'all and all the babies he can stay. But please don't hesitate to re-home him as you've done in the past with animals that were not good for the sanctuary. Prayers for y'all.

Lester and Jami, you might consider contacting a zoo that's familiar with Ostriches and their habits. Dr. Jeff, the Rocky Mountain Vet, on Animal Planet, has a Veterinarian in his practice, Dr. Baier, that worked at the Denver, Colorado Zoo for 14 years. I'm a big fan of Dr. Jeff and his channel, too. Maybe Lester could get more information from the farm that Carl came from.

Carl is learning every person as well. You did great Lester showed no fear nothing but confidence 🙌 and Carl can sense that! Just like Elephants they can be agressive when they are in musk which most of us call in in Heat. So glad you are researching & learning thats because of how much you care for your babies! Why I respect 🙌 you all so much! You are teaching me alot! Thank you 💕 😊

Oh wow, I guess I really missed something.....the video of Carl trying to mate with Lester. I'll have to watch it. I sure learned a lot today about Ostrich's. Thank you Jami. I think Carl is so cute, but I'll admit, I'd be scared of him. He's so big, and can run so fast. But that's just me. I so love all the animals in the sanctuary, including Carl. Love your video's Jami. Your awesome!! ❤️❤️

I waited patiently for this video after you mentioned during the live that it was coming. First, it’s incredible that although I clicked on it as soon as it posted on my computer, you already had 325 views! Congratulations on that. Next, thanks for the info you provided. You really do have to take a “crash course” anytime you get a new animal and as you said, besides learning about general behaviors of a particular animal you have to also remember that they each will have their own personalities and idiosyncrasies. Carl is no exception. Finally, y’all have more patience with keyboard know-it-all’s and bullies than I could ever have. On that observation I’ll leave it with thanks for another informative and fun video and thanks for all y’all do! Y’all have a great week!

Jami I am so happy to hear that Carl’s Dark Side is really not a Dark Side but a Hormone thing.
Deante’ music and Dancing must have been a Mating Call❤️
Lester don’t scrape up your Shins and make them Red and leave your hat on because of your Bald Head it’s because Carl is Falling in Love With you and wants to Hook up (Mate)with you💞 “Oh Carl” Oooo La La💕!
This video has been nice because Lester hasn’t been Interrupting you🤣 lol.
So happy to know that Carl is just Hormonal and has not turned mean💙
Thank you Jami & Lester for keeping up with learning all about Ostriches💜

The people who you got Carl from should have told you all of these fun facts about mating season and behavior to expect.

Yep that lay down low with the dancing is exactly what they do when they lay an egg too.

Jamie you are spot on. Mating season affects all animals. You'll learn to work it out. Proactive to prepare for each season for safety instead to no prep and reacting.

With any animal, there’s a period of adjustment as you learn their behaviors and they learn your rules. It takes time, adaptability, and patience; as Lester said, each animal is unique.
