About me:
I've been making short films for 20 years, starting at age 11. I directed my first feature film, Bad is Bad, in 2010. Made for only $6,000, the film went on to reach over 7 million views and garner critical acclaim. More recently, my short film, Will "The Machine", screened and won awards at film festivals around the world. Released online in 2019, it reached over 1 million views in just a month. I also work as a video editor, cutting ads for clients such as Apple, Netflix, and Beats by Dre.

My idea for the girl at the bar transition was this:
she goes outside, is looking at her reflection not in the window, but a puddle in the gutter. She’s wallowing in self pity. A car is speeding by, we see the fear in her eyes as it’s about to barrel into the water and splash her. The car gets closer and closer, and just as it hits the water, MATCH CUT to her splashing water in her face in her home bathroom. It’s morning time and birds are chirping.
Here we have a nice match cut of water -> water, also we go from reflection in the puddle -> reflection in the bathroom mirror. It also has contrast in that it goes from night time, the misery of the night topped off with more misfortune, to the water now representing a fresh start as part of a quiet, new day. 👍🏽

I really like it too, but I think the whole puddle thing even though nice to tell the story is a bit cliche right?
@@oskarneftel3756 yeah I guess, I think characters looking at their reflection to signify emotion in general is pretty cliche tho

@@Evan-tp7ur cliche, yes, but important for the economics of storytelling and the more you can say with less, the better, that is, if you have alot to say to begin with which I think with this assumed character does

This is also a helpful thing to learn as a writer! So when you’re writing a scene and you build in a match cut it’ll be helpful for the reader and could potentially be beneficial for the director. Especially if you are the writer AND director. Thank you for the video!

If you've watched The Dark Knight, that film has a TON of contrast cuts and it fits very well!
A more on-the-nose but relatable cut could be her looking at her reflection in the glass to her in her pj’s the next morning putting on the creams and serums of her skincare routine in the bathroom. Could turn that into a match cut from reflection to reflection, but taking that second shot out of her first person perspective feels like a softer approach. Or you could switch which shot is in first person perspective. Might even be stronger if we’re watching her in the night shot and we are her in the day shot.
I love this channel and all of its wonderful lessons. I've learned so much, and it is always so fun to go out and use these tips when shooting.

As you asked me to pause and think about the transition, I did and here is what i thought -
After being unable to impress the boy who was flirting with her at the bar, The scene cuts to day, where the protagnist is at the zebra crossing, waiting for the vehicles to pass. Beside her on the left is a couple, merrily talking to each other, as the protagnist shares a greedy and defeated glance.
As the signal turns green, an old lady on the left asks her if she could help her crossing the road. The protagnist unwillingly, staring uncomfortablly at the lady's wrinkled face, helps her to cross the road.
This is what came to my mind, Helpful video btw!!!

I always loved that breaking bad scene where they are at the lab mopping some blood from the floor and transitions to somebody smearing ketchup on a plate with a fry at a restaurant

I saw the tire hitting the camera transition in Season 2 of Breaking Bad yesterday! I was like "when is it going to fall over?", but it just kept rolling until it hit the camera. Loved it!

Your videos are being very helpful to me! I've quit my delivery job to focus on my newly gotten video editor job. From what I see, I've always applied some of the great techniques Hollywood editors use and didn't even noticed that. Sometimes the simpler can be the better.

really impressive tips for Directions to make a good story line
This is an excellent video which helped me to put names to things that I subconsciously knew but didn't know how to articulate. I also liked how you inserted the advert which you made interesting and I actually watched it without skipping. my first thought was to show the character looking at their reflection but the camera is inside the bar still. With all that noise going. But to show the character was looking at their reflection instead of the people in the bar is the next shot is of the character looking at themselves in a mirror the next morning with the powerful silence.

Hey would you mind explaining what / how you do the animated writing or drawing at 0:52 ? I’ve always wanted to get some sort of iPad or surface that I could write on for educational videos then overlay them as a green screen per day onto my video layer, I just have absolutely no clue how!

Most profound match cut was Saving private Ryan when you think the match cut is now him old and at the cemetery, but then realize that it was Ryan who was saved.

You cover a lot of different things on your channel which is awesome. I think you should look into covering the films of Shaun Rose. He's a no-budget filmmaker who directs, writes, acts, edits and I think he does the DP work too. He did one called Upstate Story and another called Toga. His stuff is pretty solid and he said in podcasts that he had a stroke while making one. very interesting.
