Very similar to the Coco Gauff match. When the better players needed to step up, as shaky as it was, they figured out a way to do it. Not the most confidence-inspiring win, but it's on to the next round.

As a huge Aryna fan, this was a scary match to watch. She needs better ball placement, adapt (better) short and long TOPSPIN, not just hard-hitting the balls. This is why she is not Number One in the world, she would be if she adapted additional techniques, namely (well-placed) topspin, as does, Ostapenko, Collins, Swiatek.... Congrats either way. Sorry to Peyton.

Looks like Stearns performs really well when she's behind under pressure, but not when she's ahead with the pressure of closing. Quite unfortunate as she really deserved to take this win, but it looks like nerves got the best of her. She made some of her gameplay look so easy, with the depth, power, and control she was shotmaking moving Sabalenka.

Her game is not as great as in the AO also because the surface is really not the same. Indian wells and Miami have slow surface, so it’s tough for the player who are used to kick hard on the ball
Why did Sabalenka pass through the early rounds of the AO so easily, and now why does she have such huge problems winning her first game? In Dubai, she lost to Vekic, and here she was incredibly lucky to have won. Stearns had three match points in a row on her serve; most top players would not let the victory slip away in such a situation. Is this just because at AO she had to play half amateurs in the early rounds ? For example Seidel (Sabalenka first opponent) in 2023 never won 1st round of any WTA event she participated in.
Nah don’t trash talk Sabalenka now. The Ao win was hard earned and every opponent was tricky on her own way. Just because the match didn’t look hard for her doesn’t mean the opponents were bad. Maybe she was just invincible? She did play many matches around Ao time which is missing her now. But I believe she will get back to her form :)

Sabalenka was also in very good shape after AO, she lost at Dubai but to later champ Krejcikova, at Indian Wells she get to final. She has to get to at least semifinal in either Indian Wells or Miami to prove that she is not in crisis. In this game she resembled old Sabalenka with enormous number of double faults, also I have doubts about her physical preparation, in 10th gem in 3rd set she almost twisted her ankle, slipped a few times and scraped slightly her knee. Maybe she was overtired at this stage of the game but last season she was in perfect health in every game, by far she had best physical preparation in whole WTA, only Swiatek played more singles but she had also few injuries, Sabalenka ain't got any.
Hopefully Stearns takes the positives out of this match. She also learned how tough it is to close out a match against the top players. Well done, Screaming Sabalenka.
Sabalenka has to be careful, she is extending her scream too long (all the way until the opponent makes contact with the ball) and that should be penalized!

Vekic is a decent player and Stearns played very well this match. I mean players have good and bad days too
