Such a great communicator. He talks such sense with so little bull***t. On another forum there have been questions asked - and almost a 'group think' - to move out of Fundsmith. Hearing this interview reinforces my belief that there's 'a lot of life left in the old dog yet'. One thing that wasnt discussed was 'size' of the fund. Terry does state elsewhere that this does impose some limitations on Fundsmith Equity but there's still plenty of scope for the fund, and if you want to go down the cap size then this is here Smithson comes in.

I was hoping Terry would talk about the size of the fund now and if it could hinder future performance. And if a potential limit could be put on the size of the fund in future. But yes, I love listening to him and have no hesitation in trusting the team with my money.

Size of a fund does not hamper performance because they can hold as many positions as they would like.
It is different from company that is listed trying to buy positions in other companies.

bighand69, with all due respects I disagree.Fundsmith will not hold as many companies as you like. Terry has said it will only be 25 to 30 companies, and with the fund being 28 billion, he couldnt buy a billion poundsworth of a small company without its shareprice rocketing. Also if he did buy a few million poundsworth of a small company, no matter how well it performed it would not affect the fundsmith price much. Thats why I feel we are tied to the giant companies only. Elephants dont gallop !

He has talked about the size of the fund elsewhere... In the US you have mutual funds with over $100b, so the present size of the fund is not something that worries him right now.

Yes. He has actual experience of running companies which has a mantra of churn and burn ( Tullet Prebon, Collins Stewart) to earn OTC commissions and cuts and even incentivising for volume, which pressurised self -employed brokers to increase sales through spiel , ( fictitiously or not) and ideas. Now it’s his own money . A completely different story.

Really enjoyable but Terry has a typo on slide 25 - should say '96 not '86

We all make mistakes I guess! But interesting that in the presentation he was lambasting a few companies for making mistakes and there is one in this presentation. Generally, most stuff has an error in it somewhere if you look hard enough.
