Sleeping in a "Bear Den" survival shelter with Fireplace inside | Solo bushcraft camp out

  • Building an amazing stone survival shelter / Bushcraft Shelter with pretty much just my mora knife. I ended up with a moss roof, bark shingles & interior fireplace made of stone. This was such a fun solo camp out, and I'll definitely be back for part 2!
    A fun day of bushcraft to say the least. I arrived on site at 9am, and the shelter was complete by 8pm. A long day of hard work.
    On my hike in, I spotted some shedding trees and large stones, which gave me the idea for this type of shelter. There were many downed Green pine trees as well - so I could scavenge those to aid in the build.
    The hardest part was moving the large boulders and getting them out of the ground. It's peak blackfly season as well, so I was getting attacked ruthlessly throughout this build - which all added to the feeling of success and accomplishment to overcome them.

      Did you bring any salt? I might've blinked and missed it but Alton Brown had a saying, "Salt is what makes food taste bad--when there's not enough of it".
      It's the only rock we eat and necessary to generate action potentials in our nervous systems. Processed foods have too much 🙄 but it's good to add it when cooking from scratch.
      Maybe the chicken was pre-brined? Otherwise, if the butter is salted, I bet basting that over the skewer would work pretty well.
      I'd probably also bring a little bit of carbs for a pre-workout kickstart 😉.

      In practice, it was actually build bottom row first and going upward. Though the video has one shot of the opposite happening with the ridgeline lol. My apologies for that!

    To whoever sees this… I live in the United States California Bay Area. I long to get out in the woods and do something like this, but there is poison oak everywhere you turn. I was hospitalized once from poison oak. Shot in the dark, but does anyone have any advice besides trying this will driftwood on the beach lol?
    Secondly, and sadly, mosquitos seriously deter me from going outside in the evening which is ridiculous… I’ve tried a few more natural non-deet “remedies” before and none have worked. I’m close to caving and lathering up with deet. Do any of you guys use repellent that works? It sucks that 1.5weeks of insanely itchy mosquito bites deters me from enjoying nature for even 5 minutes in the evening lol. Thanks in advance everyone

      Hello my friend. I’m sorry you got that terrible reaction from poison oak. We have poison Ivy here and it is a bit of a deterrent for some too.
      I would say maybe camping in the shoulder season is the way. A bit colder so no mosquitos, and long pants and shirt to prevent the poison oak.

      Yes ofcourse!! This one is made from White Pine. I always remember it by having 5 needles, spells out the exact number of letters for w-h-I-t-e. (Red pine around here has 2 needles.. so the trick doesn’t apply there)
      The tea is really good, the young new shoots work best, but I couldn’t find any here. It may be an acquired taste for some though 😅

      @TheBearEssentials  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do. In all honesty theres very likely better ones out there I just wanted to try using the cheapest thing I could find. Im in canada and cant find a US equivalent though (this was at Home depot).. Here's the company it's from - but again, a very basic tool, only thing really unique is the curved adze www.garant.com/tools/s/garden-construction-tools/picks-mattocks/mini-pick-dig-ez/.
      This came with a cheap plastic handle which I removed a while ago as I wanted to make the wood one.
      I also sharpened the adze and pick. They dulled out a bit by the end of this so I'll give it another touch up.
      Hope this helps!

    A question. Where did you place the fireplace to avoid carbon monoxide. I always wondered how you place a fireplace in a crowded place.

    • @TheBearEssentials
      @TheBearEssentials  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The fireplace was at my feet, farthest away from my head - which I had a small breathing hole there too .
      But generally, it has a smoke shaft chimney, and the fire is made in the back of the pit so as the clean air gets drawn from in your shelter and CO and other combustibles rise up and out

    I have so many questions sir,
    Is it better to go into the woods alone or with company?
    What do you do about wolves, bears, and hogs?
    How to not catch cold while sleeping outside?
    I still have more..
    P.s. cool shelter🫡

    • @TheBearEssentials
      @TheBearEssentials  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi!!
      Alone is much more work, a different experience entirely. But very very enjoyable. Overall, I prefer to go with friends though. Shared experiences seem best. But while filming, I get to share the experience with many - so there’s that aspect :)
      Wolves and bears are here - I’m in Ontario Canada for this video we don’t have hogs here (yet). In general, wolves are a minor concern, and bears require a bit of smarts and knowledge to not leave food out, not startle them with their young etc. when building a shelter like this - I find many big animals just avoid me. Some people take Bear spray as an extra precaution. Or walk with Bear bells to avoid scaring them!
      To not catch cold, the spruce bows underneath me do a good job of insulating between myself and a cold ground. You can also put leaves, or if just camping - a sleeping mat.
      The shelter walls, being rock, are only OK insulation, it would be packed with dirt or moss or other to improve that.
      Inside, the Fireplace was toasty, but will eventually die down. So either you get up two times through the night or sleep through it.
      The temp was 7degrees Celsius overnight and I wasn’t cold at all.
      Hope this helped!!
