    I guess I'm a FUD..lol, most all of my deer and elk are taken with my model 70 30-06 pulled from my rifle scabbard from horseback while gathering or back riding for cows off of our national forest allotment....I buy a resident tag, and hunt-! It helps being born and raised, and having to work in one particular mountain range.
    Now with that being said, I do have all the gadgets and gizmos along with designer rifles and top shelf glass for other purposes and sport shooting.....my point is, have fun and enjoy what your doing......👍, and ignore everyone else 😁

    It’s unlikely I will ever be able to participate in any of these competitions, but I enjoy hearing about and seeing footage from them. An enduring source of amazement is why someone who isn’t interested in a particular activity even pays attention to it, much less finds things to criticize. “I don’t like bowling because you have to handle a heavy ball and can’t use a shotgun.”
    As for what “real” hunters do, when I started many of them wouldn’t use a telescopic sight because of their limitations: they fogged up, were fragile, had narrow fields of view, and (for some) they seemed like cheating and were not “real” hunting. My first scope was a fixed 6-power with plain crosshair reticle: no range estimating aids, and of course laser rangefinders were not even a dream (partly because lasers themselves hadn’t yet been invented). Things change, and a couple of years ago a SWAT team member I introduced to using a tripod at front and shooting sticks at rear to support his rifle (after a competitor showed me) used the combination the next season for a one-shot 600-yard deer harvest. Another thing I remember from the old days was that a 300-yard kill was a noteworthy feat.

    Several guys i worked with were proud of the fact that a 20 rd box of ammo lasted 3 or 4 seasons! How do you get proficient at any skill with 5 reps per year?

    My first deer I’ve ever killed was done with a bag. My wife tagged out (3 MT deer) using a tripod while 7 months pregnant (posted on my channel)!
    Those ‘hunters’ are limited by their ignorance and will never expand their true capabilities with hunting.

    you are spot on Mike, I volunteer as a range officer at our local range every year prior to the November opener for the firearm whitetail deer season and I can't tell you how many unsafe shooters there are. Many are older folks who tell me I've been handling a gun all my life when I call them out on unsafe firearms practices. Soooo many of them fire their rifles once, twice maybe three times a year..two or three rounds to hit that pie plate and one or two rounds at animals. They are so proud that they have had that box of cartridges for years. Thanks for calling these people out they need to hear it. Most will blow it off but some will see that you are correct and need to change.

    Hahaha the pie plate... Last season I came around a blind turn and saw one stappled to the tree right off the road. Yeah. "Sighting in" a rifle on the road at a blind turn. That's your "real" overweight hillbilly hunter at work. The same guys that cruise the road all day for an easy kill and leave trash everywhere. You're so right about the practice factor. So many people I know struggled to even check their zero on a rifle ONE TIME before the season starts. Most archery dudes are preparing far in advance if not year round.

    Hunters in NZ use bags and packs all the time. Even in Ontario, I use my backpack as a bag on hilly declines. If anything, bipods can be a real PITA to use in a hunting scenario. A Pack is easy and quick to use at any shooting angle you'll see in the brush. I bought a bipod when i first got into firearms and used it only at the bench. These days I use a bag, probably lost the bipod or threw it out.

    I watch your channel to get lessons on different disciplines and I appreciate the information you put out there. I greatly appreciate your information in this video of the "Skills" division as my neighbor and his son want to enter the sport of competition, the father being an avid hunter. They don't have all the equipment but I have enough to get them started and the NRL Hunter Skill division would be an excellent starting point. Other than that, you shouldn't let one troll make you give a 15 minute rant to plead your case to your audience, we judge you by you actions and not by your words. Anyone can bloviate about skills but we judge by actions, and you didn't say anything that we didn't already know. When a troll makes you take this action, they have received the reaction they were after, so they win. I would rather you answer his comment with, "Hey, good idea! We needed an expert to start up this division so let me know when you have your first match scheduled so I can come to your event and compete."

    Keep making the videos mike! I with you! Some of the worse hunters are people that talk like that! I was in a hunt club and guys were constantly wounding deer and never finding it! They were always “ a good shot “ shoot their rifle a couple of times before season starts.. our hunt club president blew a hole in his floorboard in his truck! I just built a rifle with a American rifle company xylo chassis and I will definitely be hunting with it, probably the most accurate rifle I’ve ever shot, why wouldn’t you try something different 😊🇺🇸👍

    It's a cultural thing. I am a west coast big game hunter that has experienced a decent level of success. I have peers that I associate with and they have strong opinions. Most of them would never carry a tripod to shoot off of, nor a sand bag. I get it. A few years ago, I did not either. But my last three kills on elk, I really was not happy with the amount of wobble factor I had. Yes, I killed all three elk but, if I am honest, a certain portion was luck. I started looking at what I can do to eliminate some of that wobble zone. I turned to a tripod and sandbag and wow. Now, I consider it an essential piece of kit. In fact, I practice setting it up quickly and getting in position as fast as possible and dry fire in the house. I am also incorporating it into teaching my 15 year old son how to shoot off of a tripod. Yes, my peer group will think it strange, but I am hunting for me not my peer group. I determine what I need to put in my pack. I am not asking them to carry it. You see it in everything from archery, trad hunter vs compound bows, fly fishing opposed to bait, DIY vs guided, private vs. public, backpack hunting vs. horseback. Bottom line is I want to improve and therefore, am even looking at getting into NRL hunter stuff. 99.5% of hunters will never do that and thus, not ever improve their shooting. Thank you for what you offer newbies like me.

    it’s not hard to find components, if you know what happens during election cycles. you buy when they’re available, for hard times. As far as not stepping outside of our comfort zone, it’s a negative as human in general. same applies to hunting or competition. we can’t grow and expand knowledge, i know for me when i started a asked questions and went to multiple hunters and asked tons of questions. same for competition, humbleness gets you a long way and at times you end up under the right guidance. great video and i agree 😎👌🏽👍🏽

    I have seen a lot of guys at the range talk about I only shoot 100 yards because my blind or stand is only set up on a shooting lane that I cut over my food plot. I get where they are coming from, but come on man. Read the rules and try it out before you say anything. How can you bash something when you haven't done it. I have humped over 10 miles chasing game and I promise I had way more than bino and a few things. I had a full pack why not um "train like you fight" Come on man. I agree with you. Thanks for these videos. Looking forward to trying the skills division soon. Thanks for the videos.

    100% truth in your words. I hate going to the public range and listening to what these "experts " are saying. Hearing wind calls at 100 yards is my absolute favorite.
    As for gear, I killed 3 of my 4 deer off a tripod last year. It literally solves 90% of shooting positions and is solid. You may not bring a dedicated bag but wr all have game bags, socks, stuff sacs and stuff that is very similar to the bags we use in PRS.

    The main thing with hunting is it is fast and you can't see over the brush so prone is not very useful. If you are hunting from a blind or stand the best gear you can get, why not. I do lots of walking and hunt out west. 2 things that are most useful are monopod standing and tracking moving game at close rage and sitting or maybe kneeling from sticks. You are just as likely to jump something as you are to spot and stalk.

    Greetings from 🇿🇦..Can I first say that I am a fan and really enjoy your guys channel and the content you folks put out..regarding the subject matter of this video you make some great points for and against your viewers comments.I whole heartedly agree with your comments that some rifle hunters do not put in enough practice and do not get in the reps on a controlled range environment and personally I used to be that guy but have changed my ways on this over the years and practice 1000% more than I used to(still wanna take part in first hunter class match)I think to ad another perspective to what you were saying is that you have to consider that the word “hunting” can mean different things to different people and as an example over here in South Africa we often use our vehicles to get into the hunting area and then walk and stalk and as a result can carry a lot more gear into the field with a vehicle but occasionally we also hunt in some very warm conditions and can cover some long walking distances chasing our target species and need to be able to take small windows of opportunity sometimes and deploying a tripod and a whole bunch of gear is just not practical and a nearby termite mound or a tree branch can be natures tripod 😜I have successfully used a tripod and bag setup on a few occasions while hunting in some terrain and it is a great skill to be able to deploy to maximize success.p.s keep up the great channel content and remember that it’s through dialogue that challenges certain ideas and practices that we progress..🤘🏼

    Ethics, if you are a true hunter you find ways to make you more precise and accurate. It is owed to the animal to be ethical and quick, if these make you that way maybe you better be for educating yourself!

    @colecash7496 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The thing I loved most about this is your comment about hunters owe it to the animal to make an ethical shot!! This should be number one priority. there are so many guys who can’t shoot worth shit and wound animals every year and it doesn’t bother them. but those aren’t real hunters, real hunters care about the animal. The other thing that was funny is you can have binos and a rangefinder but not rangefinder binos😂🤦🏽‍♂️

  • @rileycooper8478
    @rileycooper8478 ปีที่แล้ว

    You both have valid points based on your individual hunting experiences. I get where he was coming from and likely he only knows big game hunting from the perspective of eastern US whitetail hunting. It isn't remotely like western hunting. Outside of some open areas in the upper midwest, hunting east of the Mississippi is a relatively short range world. Unless you are on a power line or gas line ROW you won't see a 300-500+ shot. Even then, most wouldn't attempt it. In some areas I hunt 50 yards is stretching it for clear visibility to see even part of a deer. This has led to a different mindset and culture of rifle hunting. The idea of bags, tripods, and even ranging equipment is foreign to most hunters, especially those of my age and older. Accuracy has been measured in inches, not sub-moa. If 200 yards and in is your world a 2.5 moa set-up will fill the freezer. A western hunter can't fathom that. The guys that go check their zero in the fall and it looks good to them are only doing what they have learned to do. Is that enough? In my opinion no, but they make clean, ethical kills within the boundaries presented by our world of big game hunting. I had the influence of family members who shot often and wanted precision. Recent years have afforded me the opportunity to invest in more accurate rifles and more range time. I know it has made me a more effective and confident hunter. I look forward to having the opportunity to shoot a NRL Hunter match and know the learning would be invaluable. As time goes on I would hope the NRL sees opportunity to engage the rifle hunting world in the east as effectively as they have done out west.

    After 12 years of working as a gunsmith I have seen and heard some shit. I'm not even surprised by those comments, it's typical living in box nonsense. As far as the cost of gear goes like optics, you can finance that stuff through retailers. I have 2 scopes and range finder binos that I have financed; if it's important to you, you'll get it. Why didn't he say no range finder? Reticle ranging is hard corp.

I shoot four different calibers based on what I am hunting and where. Sounds like the "I'm not too good on paper but a moving animal, now those I can hit" crowd. No, dude, you suck on paper because your fundamentals suck. That was also the same guy that told me I didn't need a gun like that for deer hunting (AR chambered in 350 Legend. A hunter can only use shotgun or straightwall cartridge where I live and straightwall has limitations) while he's sitting there with a decked out Rem 870, deer slayer barrel, optics, high dollar slugs etc and still not hitting shit.
    As for the comp side, it would be great if PRS had a skills division that way if someone wanted to come out and try it they could and there would be not as much pressure on them. (Let's face it, we all want to do good at matches regardless of skill level. The pressure is self induced.) That said, our monthly club does have a loaner rifle and ammo so someone can come out and try it w/out sinking a ton of money into gear. (Darn loaner rifle is better than mine. lol)

Why on earth would you not want Range finding binos??? I live on 50 acres and during rifle hunting season "Hunters" that hunt around my property could use some practice at an NRL match! I have a bullet hole in my barn! It sounds like WW III as multiple rounds are sent everywhere after a deer is spotted. I could go on a rant myself. I"m a boomer and and old "FUD". I do hunt with a with tripod, good glass, a LRF and carry a pump pillow bag that is great to sit on while glassing or throwing on top of a rock for resting my rifle when shooting. Tripod is CF and pretty much for glassing, though several times I have been able to unstrap my binos from their platform and us it as a rest, but I am not interested in f***ing with a clamp. FUD wise a traditional stock allows for a quick offhand shot. A more tactical or chassis stock on a heavy rig for long range kinda negates a quick offhand shot. If you want to load up with a massive tripod with a clamp, heavier rifle wearing a two pound scope, have at it, but that is a set up more geared for shooting from a fixed position and not handy for still hunting. Hey a yahoo that shoots once a year and is happy nicking a 12" steel at 100 is about as obnoxious as a gear monkey loaded down and all set to do their killing to 700 yards or more. One is an inept hunter/shooter and the other is just a shooter killer and not much "hunting". Hey call me a FUD stuck in my ways but only after you take your rifle to a silhouette range and knock a few rams off the 500m line from a standing position. BTW what I really wanted to say is calling names and endeavoring to look down at those you decide are deficient is a bad way to use your energy and TH-cam talents.
