    Apparently the shoes belonged to a woman that worked there for many, many years, she was one of the employees that worked there for the longest time, the day she retired she officially left her shoes there at the gate

    Hi there. As for your question about the stones next to the fence you are correct. It's also to stop the water washing the sand away when or it it ever rains there so the animals don't escape. Started watching your videos today. We can't stop watching.

      Welcome! 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏼‍♂️ We're so happy that you joined us. Thank you for those explanations, we were so fascinated by the rocks and were marvelling at how long it must've taken the workers to pack them there. We haven't heard the explanation about the rainwater before, but that makes so much sense! We'll look at them with different eyes now that we know more about them. 👌🏻😁

    The shoes at the Observatory gate belonged to Martha Klein who worked at the Hostel for many years. I happened to be at her retirement party in 2016 where she said she will leave us a souvenir to remember her by for all the years she was "slaving" at SAAO. That afternoon people saw the frame with her last pair of shoes she wore while working. When I was there two weeks ago to install a telescope (see my channel), I happen to notice the shoes are now gone. I noticed a while ago that the box was busy falling apart.

      @DustBugsTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow, thank you so much for the interesting info! 🥿 So Martha retired around six years ago. Such a pity that the box wasn't maintained and must've fallen off recently. It was such a unique artefact with a special story behind it. I have subscribed to your channel and will definitely check it out. We were fascinated by SALT and didn't know we could've booked in advance for a tour. Will definitely do that in the future. 🎆🎇

      @@DustBugsTravel thanks for the subscription, I also subscribed to your's. You must definitely come back and book a day- and night tour in advance. Also make sure you visit the Planetarium - they also offer great stargazing. I heard last week that Die Boorgat is not a "kuierplek" any more, now just a guest house.

    I went to Sutherland on 17 November 2021 and unfortunately for me I brought the rain with me. It rained all the way from Laingsburg. I can vouch that it is the coldest place in SA - in the late afternoon it was a similar temperature to places in the KZN midlands in the early morning in mid winter. So definitely no star gazing for me. To make it worst at that stage Sutherland only had water for 4 hours a day and load shedding meant the power supply was hardly better. For once this night owl was in bed by 8 - any later and I wouldn’t have had a pre-bed shower, and the power was also off! No electricity the following morning either. So I had bread and peanut butter for breakfast without my caffeine fix 😮.
    I take it the road to Fraserburg was better than you had been told. It looked like a nice drive. I wish I had gone that way from Fraserburg instead of down to the N1 and back up to Sutherland.

      Wowzer, that sounds like quite an eventful trip! 🥶 We were there after winter, about six weeks before you were, but it was still chilly. It was a fantastic drive to Fraserburg, we absolutely loved that gravel road! Maybe you can give it a shot when you visit the area again. 😁🚗

    Hi Curtis and Sonia,
    Thoroughly enjoying your tours. Just a note that you seem to be picking up quite a bit of interference on your mic, particularly the wind ... not sure how it can be fixed. Thanks again for allowing us to share your amazing travels. 💕👋

    • @DustBugsTravel

      Thank you, I'm glad you enjoy our videos! 🚙🤩 I film out of the window, so will always have a certain level of interference and I'm totally fine with that. Your comment is on Episode 6 and Episode 300 went live today, so we've subsequently had a few mic upgrades too, so hopefully it bothers you less in later episodes.

    The rocks are probably there to stabilise the fence and also prevent animals digging under it which will cause it to fall over. Also, sheep and goats will start to crawl under the fences and in that case they're shot. Farmers do not tolerate fence crawlers as they can lose their entire flock.

      You make very valid points, thank you for the additional info you provided. 👌🏻This was our very first trip and we were mainly still focusing on the roads, especially the gravel roads, connecting the towns. 😁 We only started exploring the towns in more detail a little later on and, while still impossible now to visit every place of interest, we stop off at a lot more places nowadays, which makes our visits so much more interesting. We hope you'll join us on some of these travels too. 🚗

    The town can't develop any more, due to pollution that will increase and it will have a negative affect on the telescope. Their were plans for an golf course and airstrip also. It was decline by the SAAO. I was working at the Karoo Hoogland Municipality around 2004. Any development that will have an impact on air pollution must go through the SAAO to make sure that it will not have an impact on the telescope.

    • @DustBugsTravel

      We never knew that, but it makes so much sense. You must know the area very well. Thank you for sharing that. 👌🏻They would obviously not want amything to interfere with the astronomy which the town is best-known for. 🎇
