Zelda's most CURSED Time Signatures

  • If you know anything about music, you can probably count along with the songs with three or four beats. But have you ever tried counting along with a song that has 23?
Today we're gonna break down the 6 most cursed time signatures I could find in The Legend of Zelda series, from sorta bearable, to straight-up evil.
By the way thanks so much all 1200+ of you who've subscribed after my last couple videos!! Really exciting to see all the positive feedback :)

Colgera gets all the love in terms of totk soundtracks but queen gibdo is slept on with the wild time signatures. Really cool.
If you do another I hope to see the totk proving ground theme! The start of it sounds to me like alternating measures of… 29/16 and 35/16? Maybe?

Most of the song is in 11/12+13/12. Imagine 8/4 but every beat is a triplet and the "fourth beat" is only 2/3s of the triplet and the "eighth beat" is 4/3s of the triplet. Count like this: (3+3+3+2)+(3+3+3+4).
The other parts are just 4 bars of 4/4 plus an extra bar of 2/4. However, each beat here is a quintuplet. I tried to figure out the metric modulation going from 1 beat=quintuplet to 1 beat=triplet but I couldn't after spending hours.
Also I didn't count the breaks in the song

  • @Helsionium

Great video, keep it up! But to me, the most cursed one has to be BotW/TotK's "Maze Forest" (Lost Woods) theme. That song just seems to have no discernible time signature at all. Its "pattern" is so irregular it only repeats when the whole song loops (I think).

  • @ILikeWafflz
    @ILikeWafflz 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

2:16 The main portions of the field enemy battle music in BOTW are in 7/4
2:37 Again, in BOTW, shrine battle music... well, sort of. I guess that one's 13/8
5:48 A really neat thing with this is, in TOTK, they paid honor to the 23/16 by composing a portion of his battle music in the second phase as 11/8 + 12/8, or 23/8

i feel like the song "Ganon Battle" is actually in 14/16 because of the "3 3 3 3 2" pattern, if you subdivide it into seven then the third three gets cut right in the middle, making the counting really weird, which i think makes this 14/16 instead of 7/8

I wouldn’t call Ganon Battle 7/8. Sure, that might be a good description of how many eighth notes are in the measure, but 7/8 implies that it’s going to be felt in 3 groups of 2 and a group of 3 like in the other example you played. I would call it 14/16 and explain how it’s grouped in 3+3+3+3+2. When writing in odd time signatures, we try to explain in groups of 2’s and 3’s, and notating the piece in 7/8 goes against that standard practice.

I’m a music nerd who loves figuring out time signatures of game music and finding the right subdivisions that I would use if I were to conduct it so I’m glad to find someone else who likes odd time signatures! I would actually prefer to hear the piece alone for 2 or 4 bars before you come in playing to guess but I understand if that doesn’t work for pacing. Again, great work!

    1. 5/4
    2. 14/8
    3. 14/8 again? Or 7/8 like in the previous one
    4. 5/4 + 7/4
    5. 11/8 - you talk about subdividing, which is good, but my brain has to count all the beats in the measure first
    6. I say that and then...I ended up subdividing this lol, so here goes...6 triplets + 5 triplets then 1 more triplet + 5triplets + 6 triplets, so that would make 23/8?? I was going off the melody rather than the baseline
Overall I'd say not bad!! 23/16 vs 23/8 is just a matter of are the notes eighth notes or sixteenth notes...and 7/8 vs 14/8 I'd say counts too, so I'd give myself a 4/5!
This was a fun video to follow along with, and very interactive! I'd love to see more like this! You have a new subscriber :)

This analysis is really fun to watch!
It can be a little tough to understand what you're saying clearly at times though, either because the music is drowning out your voice, or you're speaking too fast. Leaving pauses in your speech to let the music do the talking, and purposefully slowing down your natural talking speed could help a lot. Lowering the music volume while you're talking could help too.

What about the Dragon Roost Island theme from Wind Waker? I can’t tell whether it’s 3/4 or 6/8. It actually sounds like it alternates between them:
    One measure: *1*-2-3-*2*-2-3 (6/8)
    Next measure: *1*-2-*2*-2-*3*-2 (3/4)
Am I imagining it, or is that really how that song’s time signature do?

BotW Hyrule castle is 5/4 but then shifts to 6/4 every 2-ish measures while the main motif is playing
I'm not super far in the video so Idk if you've covered it in this video, but I personally love TotK's Shrine Battle theme for sheer time signature shenanigans! It switches between 6/8 and 7/8 every other measure and its NUTS

The Arabian like song at 3:40 is switching between Phrygian dominant and double harmonic major. At least the melody is. Surprisingly, it is common to switch to Phrygian dominant when using the double harmonic major.

Ganon’s theme (some at the beginning) goes hard.
