Zelda's most CURSED Time Signatures

- If you know anything about music, you can probably count along with the songs with three or four beats. But have you ever tried counting along with a song that has 23?
Today we're gonna break down the 6 most cursed time signatures I could find in The Legend of Zelda series, from sorta bearable, to straight-up evil.
By the way thanks so much all 1200+ of you who've subscribed after my last couple videos!! Really exciting to see all the positive feedback :)
A lot of you guys are pointing out a bunch of other great songs that I didn't even think of while scripting this! Should I do a 2nd odd time installment?
YES
I would love to see another!
100%!
For sure.
Absolutely!
You're going places, my dude. Your channel is growing at top speeds.

@@loool72, there. I fixed it.
As a Zelda obsessed music fanatic, this channel is perfect for me! Would love to hear a tier list of your favorite songs.
Anything other than 4/4 hurts my brain. I applaud your ability your ability to count. 👏
For me its anyting other than 3/4 or 4/4
Boringggggg

This man fears the waltz
Comet observatory hurts your brain?
Fairy flying gives a feeling of "a new adventure is about to begin!" While Gannondorf theme sounds like "adventure is about to reach its end, in one way or another"
This is so fantastic!! I love Zelda music, music theory, and especially the combination of the two! You explain these concepts really helpfully and I love your editing style. Can't wait to see what's next!
Colgera gets all the love in terms of totk soundtracks but queen gibdo is slept on with the wild time signatures. Really cool.
If you do another I hope to see the totk proving ground theme! The start of it sounds to me like alternating measures of… 29/16 and 35/16? Maybe?
Ayooooh wtf?
Most of the song is in 11/12+13/12. Imagine 8/4 but every beat is a triplet and the "fourth beat" is only 2/3s of the triplet and the "eighth beat" is 4/3s of the triplet. Count like this: (3+3+3+2)+(3+3+3+4).
The other parts are just 4 bars of 4/4 plus an extra bar of 2/4. However, each beat here is a quintuplet. I tried to figure out the metric modulation going from 1 beat=quintuplet to 1 beat=triplet but I couldn't after spending hours.
Also I didn't count the breaks in the song
10/10 editing, lots of good jokes in there 😂
I remember asking my mom about the time signature of that final battle in A Link to the Past when I was younger and we both struggled to count it out haha. Good stuff!
I'm surprised you didn't include totk shrine battle. I'm pretty sure it alternates between 11/8 and 13/8.
Great video, keep it up! But to me, the most cursed one has to be BotW/TotK's "Maze Forest" (Lost Woods) theme. That song just seems to have no discernible time signature at all. Its "pattern" is so irregular it only repeats when the whole song loops (I think).
2:16 The main portions of the field enemy battle music in BOTW are in 7/4
2:37 Again, in BOTW, shrine battle music... well, sort of. I guess that one's 13/8
5:48 A really neat thing with this is, in TOTK, they paid honor to the 23/16 by composing a portion of his battle music in the second phase as 11/8 + 12/8, or 23/8
"I was just starting to groove with the 13/16" Never thought I'd ever hear such profanities
Good content, good ideas, good personality, good sense of humor, good editing. Keep it up, man!
I think this is my new favorite channel dude. I love intense theory like this. And Zelda. I remember being so excited when I heard Hyrule Castle’s song and realized it had that wonky time signature stuff. I mean this makes me want to start a legend of zelda music theory youtube channel too. Except that’s already been done and I don’t know enough music theory OR Zelda songs to do that 🤣
Your channel is growing insanely fast. Keep up the good work, im excited for your next upload!
I just want to say that I am so glad you included a reference to Rozen's Zelda covers. That guy is legendary and deserves all the recognition Zelda fans can give him.
I'm also glad to have discovered this channel. I love music, Zelda, and funny, and you've got them all put together here, so you just got yourself a new subscriber! Plus, I love odd time signatures, so good topic choice.
Everyone is saying it, but genuinely you are doing great stuff with this channel! I'm proud to have found it so early! Great info, great humor, great topics, great editing. All around fantastic videos! Keep it up!
A Zelda themed video with multiple Emperor’s New Groove references is honestly all I need in life
i feel like the song "Ganon Battle" is actually in 14/16 because of the "3 3 3 3 2" pattern, if you subdivide it into seven then the third three gets cut right in the middle, making the counting really weird, which i think makes this 14/16 instead of 7/8
I agree
Great selection! I'm glad you zeroed in on the subdivisions. A lot of people just like to gawk at the big numbers and forget that when these pieces are written they are often thought out in smaller rhythmic cells in the first place, especially if ostinatos are involved.
Great video man, glad I could be here before your channel explodes
Sky Realm - The Legend of Zelda Tri Force Heroes
is also a great example of 11/8 time signature !
I really liked your video ! Instantly sub to your channel :)
i don’t really know anything about making music and i usually wouldn’t watch a video like this but you just seem so HAPPY talking about it. it’s very infectious and makes me want to learn more
TuneForge Fever has gone _endemic_
My man Rozen made an appearance in this video. You get an automatic sub for that.
I’m not even great at music and even with little knowledge about music theory I have watched all your videos and they are entertaining and funny plus I’ve learned a bit as well
Keep up the good work!
great job man! I love how often we get blessed with odd time in the zelda world
Idk if you edit your own videos but I love the editing
Excited to watch this once im out of class but heres your like anyway bc ik itll be amazing
Leaving a comment to let TH-cam know your channel should land in more fypages :D. Keep up the amazing work, it's funny and helped me understand time signatures a bit more !
Ganon with the prog rock progression.
I think one of bellum fight theme in PH would be in 13/8 too if my memory is correct
Your vid have such a Nice vibe, liked it a lot !
editing was so good i was very shocked to see you *don’t* have more subs
good stuff!
3 vids and 2k subs??? Keep going man, I love this stuff!!! Not only do I learn about my all time favorite game series, but I am learning about piano keys, and watching you play with the chords and going along with the music, just inspires me to get back into piano, and possibly try to get into music again. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos!! 😊
42 IS THE ULTIMATE ANSWER TO LIFE, THE UNIVERSE, AND EVERYTHING
also, just found your channel yesterday and watched that one where you ranked them, love your content! I'd love to see even more growth on here!
This was my favorite video yet. Perfect blend of jokes and music theory. Keep up the awesome work!
Love the “flow of consciousness” feeling the video has, SUBBED!
Subscribed! Your videos are so high quality and you really know your stuff. This was fun and I had no idea some of these Zelda songs were in such strange time signatures. Super cool and interesting.
Zelda wacky editing Space Balls & Fist of the North Star holy jesus
The Emperor’s New Groove in a Zelda themed video…brilliant!
Wow... I wasn't expecting another great upload only a bit after the first two... Hope you continue to grow!
yessss. you filled the zelda fan / music nerd niche. def blowing up soon...ty yt recommended 🙏🏽 new sub
Wow you really know how to edit. Many youtubers first videos are bad quality but i think your videos has better than average quality from the start
you are doing such a great job by only having 3 videos!!!
I wish you really good luck in the future
Absolutely love this video! Also a fan of 7/8 time signature. Storehouse on Fire (as well as Bridge on Fire) from the Twilight Princess soundtrack seems to be in 7/8. Really captures the sense of urgency.
Money is probably the most famous 7/8 / 7/4 song
Just happened to run into this video on my recommended. As a musician (I've been singing in choir groups for years now!) and a gamer, I'm immediately interested. I love the editing as well! I can't wait to see more of your videos.
please make another video!! I’m such a huge time signature nerd and a huge zelda nerd as well and feel like i’ve finally found my niche!! just subscribed!! :)
Great video, can tell a ton of effort went into it!
I Can't Wait For This Channel To Blow Up, I Love It When People Analyse Music Theoryish Things In Video Games And Media I Enjoy.
i got the first two right and then it completely crumbled lol, this is such a cool video btw omg
This was recommended to me, got hooked. High quality and interesting. Easy subscribe
I swear music is like magic and this video just confirmed it again. How someone can even compose something like this is beyond my comprehension. Really interesting video, I didn’t know about the horrors that lurked inside OOT’s OST.
Music is basicly just math, so this is like the calculus of music LOL
The one who composed the "Twilit Battle" bass/synth had to be way to high and every other instrument looking at him like: "bro are you in other tempo or signature? *checks music sheet * "THAT'S 4/4!?"
"23/16! we got a 23/16!!"
*CDA members crash through the roof*
Instant subscribe. Loving your editing style, and always up for good Zelda breakdowns no matter if it's lore or music or anything else
Just saw this, dude you’re doing better videos than I’ve seen at 100* your sub count. You’ve earned one sub here!
As an edit, IK you do a lot of LOZ stuff, but the Xenoblade games have amazing soundtracks, especially 2 and 3. Just a suggestion!
as someone who loves learning music theory and is a nerd i needed this
My choir is singing Hark the Harold Angels in 7/4
Growing up with Ocarina of Time music is probably why I love Prog Rock so much
Thx for TH-cam’s algorithm…
Ur videos r so interesting and insightful at the same time! 🎉
Btw, I thought it would contain the odd time shrine (or battle) theme at first😂 in the latest video.
(I’m ur fan from Taiwan!)
Nice video dude, I love your channel so far
"23/16 - These toys are too much for you"
I heard that ganon theme and I needed to look this up
HEY great video! In part 2 please cover the twilight princess boat ride balloon mini game, really curious what signature that's in.
I absolutely love your passion for music, it's infectious
as someone who loves music and Zelda this is amazing, i instantly subscribed dude great work!!
Ngl, that thumbnail scared the crap out of me when I first saw it lol XD
man this channel is a breath of fresh air, great stuff dude!
Your editing is sending me 😂
I knew the 42 joke. Finally, I have my nerdy-ness acknowledged!
at the end of the day, anything can be in 4/4 if you try hard enough.
The Spaceballs reference gave you an instant like
What a great video. Keep it up my guy
your channel is so fun and interesting!
I wouldn’t call Ganon Battle 7/8. Sure, that might be a good description of how many eighth notes are in the measure, but 7/8 implies that it’s going to be felt in 3 groups of 2 and a group of 3 like in the other example you played. I would call it 14/16 and explain how it’s grouped in 3+3+3+3+2. When writing in odd time signatures, we try to explain in groups of 2’s and 3’s, and notating the piece in 7/8 goes against that standard practice.
I love odd time signatures so this video was super cool! Also I'm very surprised that the only ones I guessed wrong were 13/16 and 23/16.
If there is a tie in between the fairy flight and the Ganon battle it would be that Navi can't help you during the fight
Dude Koji Kondo was wild for this. Your channel is awesome! Keep on going, and don’t give up!
Great video!
This is horrendously heinous, I love it!
As a fellow Zelda music channel, I really appreciate this video man. Great concept and execution. Keep it up.
"But have you ever tried counting along with a song like this?" *intro fanfare of ALttP Ganon battle plays*
Me: "7/8 isn't cursed, though."
Great job! I’m a music nerd who loves figuring out time signatures of game music and finding the right subdivisions that I would use if I were to conduct it so I’m glad to find someone else who likes odd time signatures! I would actually prefer to hear the piece alone for 2 or 4 bars before you come in playing to guess but I understand if that doesn’t work for pacing. Again, great work!
I assume you've checked out the band Dream Theater? If not the song Dance of Eternity should be fun for you
Fairy Flying is one of the first songs of the game, while the Ganondorf Battle is one of the last.
It wouldn't surprise me if there was a bit of a reference there.
1. 5/4
2. 14/8
3. 14/8 again? Or 7/8 like in the previous one
4. 5/4 + 7/4
5. 11/8 - you talk about subdividing, which is good, but my brain has to count all the beats in the measure first
6. I say that and then...I ended up subdividing this lol, so here goes...6 triplets + 5 triplets then 1 more triplet + 5triplets + 6 triplets, so that would make 23/8?? I was going off the melody rather than the baseline
Overall I'd say not bad!! 23/16 vs 23/8 is just a matter of are the notes eighth notes or sixteenth notes...and 7/8 vs 14/8 I'd say counts too, so I'd give myself a 4/5!
This was a fun video to follow along with, and very interactive! I'd love to see more like this! You have a new subscriber :)
In the Queen Gibdo theme, I love how the sitar(? not actually sure if it is a sitar) adds to the syncopation. Makes me think it might be 5/4, 3/4, 4/4, but it definitely has that dragging feeling.
Damn, this video hits all of my interests. My only sadness is that I didn't make it first! My band actually plays a cover of Prince of Darkness (the Ganon battle theme from ALTTP)! The piano left hand at the end of the progression is brutal!
Not a Zelda song, but Polyriddim is (mostly) in 7/8. Absolute banger.
Hey man, been a Zelda and music nerd my whole life, I really thank you for the advice on subdividing in to more digestible signatures! I only study music so much outside of being self-taught, so this will help me greatly. Subscribed, and I’m excited for whatever else you do next!
Watched all three of your videos, you're touching subjects that I've always found amazing. If I can give some friendly criticism, I think the only thing that could use some work is your editing, it's for the most part a lot of jokes that are a tad overused I think. But aside from that, I'm really looking forward to more of your work :)
Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, looking back on them so far, I agree that I overused jokes and overedited a bit. I’m gonna try to tone down the next video somewhat to see how people respond.
This analysis is really fun to watch!
It can be a little tough to understand what you're saying clearly at times though, either because the music is drowning out your voice, or you're speaking too fast. Leaving pauses in your speech to let the music do the talking, and purposefully slowing down your natural talking speed could help a lot. Lowering the music volume while you're talking could help too.
Thanks for the pointer! I’ll pay attention to that on this next vid I’m working on
I wrote a trombone solo in 11/8 once. Banger piece
The children of termina is one of my favorite Zelda re-compositions so im glad it was included here!
What about the Dragon Roost Island theme from Wind Waker? I can’t tell whether it’s 3/4 or 6/8. It actually sounds like it alternates between them:
One measure: *1*-2-3-*2*-2-3 (6/8)
Next measure: *1*-2-*2*-2-*3*-2 (3/4)
Am I imagining it, or is that really how that song’s time signature do?
Amazing video as always, keep it up!
I have seen so many videos on counting time signatures and i still get so confused so fast...but greqt video, loving your stuff
BotW Hyrule castle is 5/4 but then shifts to 6/4 every 2-ish measures while the main motif is playing
I'm not super far in the video so Idk if you've covered it in this video, but I personally love TotK's Shrine Battle theme for sheer time signature shenanigans! It switches between 6/8 and 7/8 every other measure and its NUTS
The Arabian like song at 3:40 is switching between Phrygian dominant and double harmonic major. At least the melody is. Surprisingly, it is common to switch to Phrygian dominant when using the double harmonic major.
I love your channel man!! Such high quality edits and content! Good shit, keep it up!!
instant sub. keep it up dude!!
Ganon’s theme (some at the beginning) goes hard.
