  • Who were the Goths? Where did they come from? And what's the difference between the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths? I attempt to answer those questions and give a brief overview of the Goths.

    Seems to me that people forgot about the Damnatio Memoriae imposed by Caracala on the GETIC population, that had its home in the Carpathians, even the name of the book by Jordanes suggests that, also makes sense since the gets/dacians "swore to bring Rome down" for the earlier wars and slavery that was brought by the roman empire.

      Gotland was named after the Gutes and Götaland, the region in southern Sweden, was named after the Geats. I believe all of these names are etymologically connected. There’s speculation of a relationship between these people and the Goths, especially with the similarities in the names, but nothing definitive.

      @@Byztory I'm not a scholar but I cant help but wonder: The name different people call themselves seems to be the name for human or a young male like sven meaning a young male for example. People calling themselves just people (normal people , not strangers speaking strange tounges. But maybe all nordic people or at least a big chunk considered themselves basically thesame people. The langauges handn't diverged so much yet. The norweigan word for boy is gutt wich leads to my hypothetis that perhaps a majority of the nordic people counted themselves as goter, götar gutar or whatever but as people became less mobile there was a division, and a more local identification led to new words based on geografi or direction. So if there was a big migration it could emerge from a much bigger area.

      Another question. In the time of Norcid bronze age and forward the waterways where conecting people while the the forests where dividing. And the culture was very maritime. So could it be that coastal reagions of the baltic sea was part of the norse coreland even some parts south of the baltic sea? Could the expanation why some features south of baltic sea were older then the onces in Scandinavia be explained by the fact that the goths were already there as inhabitants of a core region.

    The Origins part misses out on telling that there are areas (Gotland) and cities (Göteborg) and names (Göta, Gustav (staf aka king of the Goths)) all in Sweden and quite typical Gothic. Further, that the Gothic tribe, The Danes first ventured down into eastern Europe from Skåne (Scandinavia) and stayed for a couple of generations only to return, go back and then (by the mythical queen/witch Gefion and her four bewitched bull sons plow out of Sweden) conquer Zealand (Sjælland) to become the leading tribe in what is today Denmark, land of the Danes. Furthermore, a Gothic people migrated from the island Bornholm down through Europe in these times to become The Burgundians of France.

  • @willek1335

    I'm a total outsider when it comes to the origin. The burial method, traced via archeology, is located in Poland and predates the method in Sweden. This is thus evidence that these people originated from Poland. That makes no sense to me, for the following reason:
    Vikings came to Normandy and took the land, so the story goes. However, we know heavy cavalry was first used in Normandy before Norway/Sweden/Denmark. The fact that the chivalric culture originated from Normandy, is proof that Vikings came from Normandy..? No. It's probably more complex. Ideas have always come late to Scandinavia - the fringe of Europe - northward from the continent.
    Anyway, interesting video.

    • @Byztory
      @Byztory  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I was not trying to say that the dating of the finds proves, by itself, an origin in continental Europe. However, the dating also does not prove that the Goths originated in Sweden and then migrated to what is today Poland. When these finds were originally discovered, it was thought to be evidence that backed up the account given by Jordanes. However, since we can date these finds, we now know that this is not the case. Is it possible that the Goths did, in fact, originate in Sweden? It's possible. And maybe we'll find evidence of that someday. But right now, we don't have it.
      There is other evidence that the Goths originated along the Vistula River and then moved south, although this is debated. So we can maybe trace the Goths from the Danube River to the Baltic Sea, but we can't make that jump to Sweden with what we have

    • @AntonioPeralesdelHierro
