  • During the Second World War many tragic events took place in Latvia, influencing all Latvian inhabitants -- two occupations, holocaust, mobilization in foreign armies, mass deportations, where Latvia lost 1/3rd of its population. One of those tragic historical events is Latvian Legion.
    Documentary "Latvian Legion" (script by historian Uldis Neiburgs) tells about the beginning of Latvian Legion, about the battles it fought and about Legion's contradictious evaluation nowadays. The film is based on the range of documentary newsreels, interviews with ex-legionnaires and views of historians.
    The film is emotional but at the same time objective view about the events in Latvia during the Second World War. Every person remembering the disasters of the war remembers his own pain and tragedy. Hebrews remember the holocaust, Russians -- their burnt villages. Latvians remember the battles fought in the foreign armies where brother fought against brother, father -- against his son. This is the tragedy of a small nation in the times when two powerful enemies demonstrated their strength. The aim of the film is to explain what Latvian Legion is, how and why it was created.
    The film "Latvian Legion" was made by a film studio "Devini" in 2000 with a support from the Ministry of Defence of Latvia.

    A valuable documentary. Helping to understand the senseless, heartbreaking tragedy. I'm afraid influencers of today may lead us into similar destruction. There are always people who think themselves gods toying with nations,and humanity. The warnings of history are there.

    Realy heart breaking ending.
    My great grandfather was sent to Syberia too for no reason and when he was returning home about 4km away from his home he died on a train. A friend who was with him made it to his home and told my great grandmother that they were in labor camps, where they were forced to work in inhumane conditions, beaten, fed realy bad and dressed poorly. And grandfathers body just gave up.

    My great grandparents were shot and killed as they tried to flee Riga during WW2. They were Russian Jews who were born and raised in Latvia. Both sides suffered. The Latvians suffered at the hand of the Red Army and the Russians suffered at the hands of Latvians,Nazis,Stalin.

      That's a fair comment. A friend of my late father here in the UK served on German U boats. He was Latvian. He fled communism after WW2 like many other people from the Baltic states. We had Poles, Ukrainians and 'white russians' here in my then small home town. He , my fathers friend hated the jews with a passion , as jews proliferated in the NKVD when Bolshevism/communism invaded the Baltic states. This is well documented even by jewish sources now.

My big grandfather rebelled against the Soviets and was sent to Solovka for 10 years. My grandfather joined the Nazis when they took over. He moved to the western front and was took by French soldiers. He was sent to POW camp and one of the doctors regretted him because he was only 19 at that time. He was diagnosed with pneumonia (in fact he was not)
    and was sent to the field hospital. After the war he was allowed to return to Daugavpils.

    The consequences of war year through the hearts and minds of all who experience it. I remember as a small boy listening to the old diggers from WW1. Grey sagging old faces contorted by their terrible memories. My parents, my mother the same contorted face as her memories quickly resurfaced, thinking of her school friends killed during the London blitz. My father would always look down with a heavy brow, a you man in the British parachute regiment. Uncles their families their friends all the same look. Today men of my generation Vietnam again the same despairing glazed eyes. There are no rules, no morals in war, only death.

    I didn't believe a particular story about the loss of his brother, because of the way he behaved to us as children. In retrospect this film provides an understanding of his madness and horror upon us.

Christian pogroms, regular slaughter of Jews throughout those times were common, including in orthodox Christian Russia. As for the poor Latvians, it was they who collaborated to mass murder their neighbours in 1941, indeed carrying out the mass murders before the German SS groups even arrived. Great documentary. Dispassionate and sober point of view. Very helpful historical resource for a foreigner who tries to clarify Latvia's nazi issue. I had surprised (negatively) when i learned that there is such a day that honor Waffen SS veterans as heroes. I'm greek, and my country payed dearly nazi occupation. All humans who loved freedom, gave their lifes to fight against nazi brutality. A great fight was taking place in Russia, which would determine the future of the free world. The Allies and many brave partisans in all occupied Europe they were giving their blood in this fight against brutality. I understand their hatred for the Soviets. But blind for their hatred, they fought for nazi in a period that the fall of Eastern Front from nazis would define the future of Europe. And it's definitely sure that Latvia wouldn't be independent. Perhaps their motivations were noble, but in fact they didn't fight for Latvia's independence. They were one more gear in nazi war machine fighting for nazi's cruel purposes. They were not nazis nor heroes. As the documentary concludes, they were victims. Victims of a tragic historical period. Latvians who treat them as a heroes, they should think more. What the heroic has the cooperation with nazis? If the Eastern Front would fall, nazis will dominate Europe. And we all know what does it means. Latvians would see the hated Russians defeated. But they would participate by fighting for nazis at the Eastern Front in the enslavement of millions of people. They cooperated with nazis in a war with no tomorrow for Latvia and a cruel tomorrow for the rest of the world.

    • @ec9045
      @ec9045 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Of course the Latvian soldiers that fought for the Nazis were victims , but 16th March isn't a day were Latvians honor the Waffen SS veterans. Latvians honor the men that fought in the Latvian legions and tried with their life's to save our nation from the evil that was coming. Even if Latvia had stayed under the Nazi power the suffering wouldn't have been so big for the Latvian people as it was.

    • @iapet0s
      @iapet0s 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Edvards Celmins On that day, however, present many lumpen neo-fascist anti-Semitic elements in the events. Any coexistence and common course with them is culpability. Also, the Latvian Legion -don't forget-, was part of the Waffen SS and not a standalone army. And what do you mean "the evil that was coming"? Latvia was already under Nazi occupation, thousands of Jews had already been murdered. The evil had been already hurt Latvia, or you do not recognize it as such? The veterans in the interview here, say it clearly. They responded to the call of the Nazis to prevent a second Russian occupation. What kind of freedom they would win under Nazi occupation? Given that nationalism in Latvia and hatred for Russian population is strong, I'm pretty suspicious of these events. I'm not saying that Latvians honor Nazis (except of lumpen Neo-Nazis who they do). But Latvian historical consciousness, however, is very moderate on Nazis. And this is not healthy. Better today to remember these times as a tragedy for Latvian nation, than honor as a heroes people who joined to their country's conqueror most deadly troops to fight for nation's "freedom". Does it make any sense actually this argument?

    • @ec9045
      @ec9045 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      iapet0s I wasn't writing to argue with you. I wrote this so maybe you have misunderstood that Latvians don't honor Nazis we honor the soldiers that fought in the Latvian division 15 and 19th division. 16th March in 1944 was a day when a battle was won against the Bolsheviks by the river Velikaja high point 93.4 was retaken by the two Latvian divisions with out any other division participation.
      I am saying that for the Latvian ethnic group great evil was coming as USSR destroyed many family's, deported and shot Latvians. The numbers of how many Latvians suffered from this are more than 2x bigger than how many jewish Latvians suffered trough the war.

    • @iapet0s
      @iapet0s 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Edvards Celmins "Does it make any sense actually this argument?"
      Probably you misunderstood the word "argument". I don't think that we are wrangling. I mean that your argument that they fought for nation's freedom, in fact is paradox whatever their motivations. But anyway.
      "16th March in 1944 was a day when a battle was won against the Bolsheviks by the river Velikaya high point 93.4 was retaken by the two Latvian divisions with out any other division participation. "
      It's actually like this as you said, or on 16th March they honor in general Latvian Waffen SS veterans for their sacrifices in fighting against Red Army?
      Look, to be clear. I don't consider Latvian Legion as a nazi ideology Units. Even in the Nuremberg Tribunal has been clarified this. But it's a very sensitive issue, specially for the rest of Europeans. Plus the fact of the presence of many neo-fascists on that day, the whole story gets more confused. I think Latvian's nationalism confuses the things. Personally, i understand their pain and hatred for Soviets after first (brutal) occupation. They took their decisions in dark times. But i can't see them as heroes. I see them as history's victims. Latvia's nationalism needs heroes, and they are found on their faces with a not very healthy way, cause history is concealed.

    • @ec9045
      @ec9045 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      iapet0s More or less I have to agree with you. But talking a bit off the topic Nuremberg trial was not the only trial for the Nazis. For example there was a Riga trial , where if I am not mistaken 6 or 3 Nazis were hanged with out any trial and they had not so much harm as for example Albert Speer who was sentenced 20 years in jail. I know it's off the topic , but thought it's interesting to mention something like this as the USSR had no line were to stop and think. Not saying that these Nazis were not guilty , but something to think about.

    What the Latvian people think about Germany, when they heard about the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, and the Red Army plus the NKVD arrived? More exactly what they thought about the Nazi Germany and Hitler. And what they thought after 22 of June? Maybe (surely) they hated the Bolsheviks, but they didn't hate the Germans and didn't fear them. What did they think when Hitler attacked Poland, France, Belgium... and so on. Were they happy? Did any Litvanians think seriously that they would get independence from Germany? Did they think seriously that the USA and GB would save them from the Soviet Union? How simple to say these words: independence, I wanted to survive...,, I obeyed to the order... Not a single word on atrocities against the Jewish people, against the simple bolsheviks. The simple Litvanians only fought for their independence and never committed any crime or cruelty. But a lot of lamentation on Latvians who were completely innocent, they had no responsibility for nothing.

    The reality is that nearly all Latvians greeted the germans as liberators, women would spread their legs to german soldiers and many men joined the SS. Why? Like the Ukrainian Holdomor, Latvians experience in 1.25 years the brutal horror of Jewish communism (starting with wealth confiscation), the NKVD and the tyranny living in a state of communist rule. Many men were shot or sent to siberia for trivial offenses, some for crticizing jews. Others for supporting the christian church. Christanity was obliterated. When i was a kid, a old Latvian immigrant down the street from me told me about the brutal russo-german fighting; some of it unimaginable. Vietnam and 2 Iraq wars were picnics to this conflict. After the 2war all of these survivors lead normal lives. I think the PTSS that these veterans are excuses to get the generous benefits on the dole. Poor baby!??

    вместе с Гитлером за свободную Латвию? Или у них не было выбора, как
    говорится в начале видео? И еще вопрос, а стоила ли такая борьба сотен тысяч жизней женщин, детей, стариков, погибших от голода во время блокады Ленинграда. Ведь эти смерти на их плечах.

    Yeah..."This was not me, it was a one armed men..." - oldest excuse in the book. Yes Soviet occupation was very bad. Stalin and its NKVD have committed a lot of crimes against Baltic people, but it does not excuse going and, actually, within Waffen SS when they could actually see what SS was doing. There is a WW2 report found in Germany made by a Wehrmacht commander, I believe in 1943, that requested to resettle Latvian Waffen SS units away from the regular Wehrmacht units, because the atrocities that Latvian SS was committing at the front against civilians and PODs were so horrible that it has seriously affected regular German soldiers morale. So, if someone in Latvia wants to white wash their murderous relatives and the history, they have another thing coming. WORLD DOES REMEMBER!!! This film is a DISGRASE. SHAME!!!

Latvian Legion has nothing to do with Nazi ideology, which was actually acknowledged by Germans themselves... btw, they haven't fought in Western front, only against russian communists... and march through Riga is to commemorate their fallen comrades and service to people of Latvia... nothing to do with Hitler or Nazism

    • @donhippone8437

      @@bentos117 They were nazi collaborators, that's the context. Some of the worst crimes were committed by these 'guardians of homeland'.
      In neighbouring Belarus, since the war, parents used to scare their kids saying that 'Latvian' (not 'German'!) will come and get them if they won't go to bed on time.
      New, independent, Latvia seeks to reaffirm its sovereignty by undermining anything Russian, because it (perhaps rightfully) fears gravitating towards it politically. These Nazi collaborators represent the only anti-Russian part of Latvian history, so Latvia embraces it for the lack of better options. Ties to Nazis are being desperately denied, ignoring well-recorded history and common sense.
