The crew prepare for undocking and TV coverage of that event, followed by the 2nd lunar landing attempt on the Ocean of Storms.
All video/photos and audio is courtesy NASA.
Orbiter Space Simulator is used to depict events where real time footage is not available. The TV coverage I have is silent and I have guestimated the audio with the film.

I was 18 back then. Watched every minute that I could of Apollo. About 2005 I talked to a man in a medical waiting room, he said he was from Bethpage, NY. My eyes got really big and I asked............ what did you do ?????? 'I worked on Lunar Modules, he said !!!!' Happy tears, for me.

Amazing how excited Pete was when he saw how close he was to the landing site. Like a kid on xmas morning. Al constantly feeding him data on the landing and being equally excited was great too. Haha then Pete anxious to get out onto the surface. Good stuff.
I feel sorry for the guys who had to stay in orbit and be so close to such an amazing experience. I mean they got a pretty amazing experience too, but you can't beat actually being on the surface and what that must of been like. I imagine most of them thought they'd eventually get their turn to land on a future mission, like Dick Gordon who was scheduled to land as part of Apollo 18 and Roosa maybe with Apollo 20.
John Young was the CM pilot on Apollo 10 (which wasn't scheduled to land), but got to land later with Apollo 16. Gene Cernan was the only one who got to descend to the moon twice in the LM, once as Apollo 10 LM pilot, which got to within 8 miles of landing, and then again with Apollo 17 as commander which did land. Cernan, Lovell, and Young, the only 3 guys who got to make 2 lunar trips.
Lovell is the only one to go twice and never land.

I was fortunate to say hello to Mr. Bean at a Spacefest event in Tucson some years ago, and shake his hand. One of the highlights of my life, a handshake with one of the 12 that walked on the moon!
We live in exciting times again, now with the SpaceX, Webb telescope, etc., but, its nothing like living through the 60's space program, each mission building off the one before until July 1969. Apollo12 was almost as exciting, performing precision landing and visiting Surveyor. I was 12 years old and loving all of it. I'm STILL loving it through LM5!
Neat hearing them SO EXCITED as they got within 600 feet of their intended landing spot.

LM5, this is your best video yet. I love Apollo 8 and STS 1, but this Apollo 12 series, and this particular sequence, utterly magnificent. Spellbinding.

The excitement of my first lunar landing is something I'll never forget. Thanks so much for your excellent work, words cannot describe the joy you gave my 13 year old inner child!

Yes, I didn't know much about them until I watched the mini-series, "From The Earth to the Moon". One of my favorite parts was when Conrad let Bean take control of the LM. Such a contrast between them and the Apollo 11 crew but I think the historical significance of pulling off the first landing might have weighed too much on everybody.
I was three days away from being born at this moment. Still chaps my behind that I missed the vast majority of the space race. Thanks for posting this.
I can’t express to you how grateful I am to you of your hard work in these postings. Apollo 12 is my favorite. The entire crew are truly likable and excited personalities that you can easily identify with. Can’t wait for your future postings when we finally return to space, the moon and beyond.

I've said it before and I'll say it again..... AWESOME job with the videos.... I'm still being amazed with what you do with them...it makes me feel like I'm really onboard with the crew. I cant wait to see how you cover the 2 moonwalks for 12... and I really wish that 12's color TV cam hadn't gotten messed up because those views would have been awesome and perfect for this series. I cant wait for what's coming up next
Yes, it's a shame the TV camera "quit" early, but I don't think it would have been any better (resolution wise) than what we saw on Apollo 14, as it was the same model camera ( it was also a modified cabin interior use model) We really didn't see stunning TV until Apollo 15 with a highly refined model. Still a shame tough.
There is a TH-cam video that shows a document were there was a prior EVA to check out the effect of the dust on the LM. The video claims that there was an accidental confidential insertion of the 3rd EVA, even though only two were publicly reported. It was called a "standing EVA". I don't know what that means, but my guess this that one of the men got out of the LEM and stood on the ladder to take a look. He went back into the LEM before the first reported EVA took place. I don't know if this is a conspiracy theory or a true leak of an confidential paragraph into a public document. Can anybody with true knowledge back this up, or is it just bunk? Thanks in advance.

Great job LM5,it is like opening a new X-mas gift when you post your latest masterpiece for us Apollo Geeks,cant wait for the moonwalks. Even though there is not much TV coverage you can use an LRO pic of the landing site and follow their trek on the map and insert actual photos in real time at each stop on EVA 2 with the original Network moonwalk simulations (if they are avaliable) or ground simulation;just a suggestion,whatever you have planned,I CANT WAIT ! Thanks again

Bean is the first time I've really paid attention to what a LEM pilot does during landing. His readouts and technical proficiency outstanding. Pete Conrad dramatic landing. 2nd moon landing.

Interesting to note that Dick Gordon first extends the docking probe allowing Intrepid to just "hang" there on the capture latches while any oscillations damp out before he finally actuates the release switch and backs off.
John Alvarado I believe It was partially because of what happened on Apollo 11. the tunnel wasn't vented completely. and the way they ran the undocking caused the LM to go off course when they went into PDI and they landed long.

@@bigdrew565 That makes perfect sense. This needed to be a precision landing because of the Surveyor. It's awesome what science, math and the human brain can conceive and accomplish. I am so happy that I was old enough to live through the exciting time of Mercury, Gemini and Apollo, and still alive to view these collections. Kudos to you LM5!

I live on Long Island, 10 minutes from the 'Cradle of Aviation' museum . On display in the museum is the lunar module that Dick Gordon was supposed to land on the moon on Apollo 18. I'm 5 minutes from the site of the Grumman factory where the LEM was built. I grew up following all the NASA flights, and with your videos it's like I'm seeing them all over again. Keep up the great work!

At first I thought maybe you were using the Real Solar System mod for Kerbal Space Program lol. Have you tried it? I just started playing it so I'm trying to research these Apollo missions so I can try to duplicate them in the game. I'll have to try this Orbiter Space Simulator too.
I like the attention to detail you have, like how you have the same lunar texture/land marks visible in the simulation as the actual footage at around the 45:00 mark, and the landing at around 1:18:00. Nice touch.

Does anybody know where I could find the televised press conference they did on the return trip? I was reading "Apollo 12: On The Ocean Of Storms" and that was the first I'd heard of it but all I've found is a press conference they gave on Earth after the mission.
1:22:45 did Bean manage to get a photo just before the dust dropped to the surface? Maybe it was light leak on the first frame of the roll and anyhow his camera wouldnt be accessable seconds after descent engine shutdown...
Yes, the photo is light-struck (not dust), and that's the first frame on the roll. It's image catalog number AS12-48-7022. Also, it's taken from Pete Conrad's window, not Bean's window. And, it was well after the landing. Touchdown was at 110:32:36 in the mission. That photo was taken at 111:58:43 in the mission (almost 1.5 hours after touchdown).
After watching apollo 8, 10, and 13 I finally get to do a landing. Yeah.

Excellent work LM 5 in capturing this accurate historical account of the Apollo 12 landing. Just one comment regarding communications with Houston. Some conversations don't seem to have the "4 second" lag between the crew and Houston. Is that an editing thing?

Yep. Don't you just love the hoaxsters. I watch those videos when I need a good laugh. My favorite is this older dude who says the moon landings are a hoax because it's impossible to work inside a space suit. This guy went to the trouble of building himself a vacuum chamber with a rubber glove connected to the chamber. He then demonstrates how he pumps the air out of the chamber and watches the glove inflates like a balloon. He sticks his hand in the glove and states "see under a full vacuum I can't move my hand inside this glove". This is all born of ignorance because the space suit are pressurised to about 2.5 PSI. That means he wold have to get his vacuum chamber down to 12.2 PSI to get a more accurate representation of what really happens. Funny or what. There is also the dude that says rocket engines don't work in a vacuum because the need the earth atmosphere to "push" against . And this guy is serious !!

Hey lunarmodule5 guy, I think you may have made a mistake in your video. At 41:44 in your video, Pete Conrad says, "Boy, do you look neat down there by the moon, Dick." The video shows the LM "down there" with the moon behind it. The problem is that Pete Conrad is in the LM (down below) and Dick Gordon is in the CM above him. The timestamp for Pete's remark is 108:26:48 in the transcript. Also, that timestamp would have put them at 17 degrees West, but your video at 41:44 shows Theophilus crater below which is at 26.4 degrees East. I know that 16mm DAC doesn't have audio and that you put it where you thought it went.
Yup, I just put it in the timeline where I think it should go based on the fact that all the audio is edited to remove the gaps...
@@lunarmodule5 The section from around 48:52 to 50:26 showing the CSM over a dark lunar surface is from the 16mm film magazine K. Unfortunately, it is greatly underexposed and in reality the area underneath the CSM is in full sunlight. It starts by showing the CSM with the large crater Ptolomaeus behind it and then passes between Lalande and Lalande A, over Fra Mauro H and past Fra Mauro. I think the timing of this section within the mission timeline can be narrowed down further:
Taking excerpts from the LM Onboard Voice Transcription and converting times to GET I would say the filming of magazine K started around 108:26:00

I love these videos. I've been listening to the Apollo missions from the archive.org website and I'm up to 14 but to see the actual footage at the same time is brilliant. Does anyone know what the clattering sound is at 42:15? I've heard it on other missions but never figured out what's causing it. Thanks lunarmodule5 and keep up the good work

Hmm - depends on how you define being on the Moon. The "Contact" light is triggered a few feet over the surface by the contact probes sticking down out of the landing legs. Definitely touching the Moon though.

as far as I know...it looks like it is and the mag lasts 5-6 mins so that's about right...but I am not 100% sure

Dick missed a great opportunity to capture the LM with the forward axis sunlit, with the moon as a backdrop, shame the 500 shots were so out of frame.
if the moon is 240,000 miles and light travels at 186,000 miles a second, why isn't there a lag time in these conversations. Sounds like they're within 100's miles instead of 1/4 million.

It really was TRAGIC about how "Pete" Conrad died/[assed away. While his 2 Apollo 12 compatriots, Allan B ean Bean and Dick Gordon died as old men in their mid-eighties, poor Pete died as a result of a motorcycle accident out in California at only 69.
Right. It's also my understanding that he was indeed wearing a helmet and he wasn't even speeding. Awful bad luck.

Ben..the series will be completed just not until i have finished work on the Apollo 11 full mission series which is due for release in July 2019. I am already completed to the start of day 4 but have a long way to go. Once 11 is ready i will recommence 12 to completion..regards LM5
