Would you cooperate with Jordan Peterson in creating an alternative to the university system by providing a quality less strictly politically correct education product online? The American University system is not salvageable.

I enjoyed the video. But I have to ask, would the Oberlin professor who penned that defense of "censorship" on the grounds of "discursive violence" be prepared to debate Ms. Sommers in a public forum? I think it is time to put these individuals on the spot and force them to defend their fascism publicly.

    • @haraldschuster3067
      @haraldschuster3067 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Robert, that's, I believe, the problem with so many from the left side - and it's not a US specific thing - we have the same here in Germany, though, I'd say - a group of people behaving like that would most likely have been removed from campus. Although back in the 70s this was common in Germany as well.
The problem I am talking about is that they do not see what they do as something bad. They are right, the others are wrong and stopping them from spending falsehoods is a noble deed. They would, I say, protest most violently when you'd accuse them of Nazi-style discussion suppression techniques - though this is EXACTLY what they do.
It does not matter if it's a religion or some other form of ideology - when you drift off into the land of faith and leave the land of facts, proof and reason behind you, you end up in a totalitarian system. But "faith" will throw in the filters so that you don't even notice.

College kids also say 'hate speech is not free speech'. So, while it is true most of them support 'free speech', it is a redefined version of free speech that does not include anything they consider offensive. Which nuters the entire point of free speech laws.

    • @Hauptseite
      @Hauptseite 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Exactly. I wonder how warped the surveys would appear if the question was phrased, "Do you support free speech that includes hate speech or no free speech at all?"
Force the issue on them by wording it like that. I'm real curious to know what the response would be.

The very first restriction, even one entirely innocuous, Negates free speech. Speech is either free or it isn't. The first sets the precedent for all those to follow. Eventually, all will be silenced.

...hate speech is not free speech.I think I am sure that those kids who interrupted the lecture are more informed of what is going on in college campuses than she is.They are adamant for a reason.I think it is foolish to be reassured the kids are fine by The New York Timed they don't think assist that college.
They are a minority and people tend to disregard that almost always.I would take a closer look at what is going on because they know free speech means and involves hateful speech. But I think they refer to hate speech as OTHERS NULLIFYING WHAT THEY ARE CLAIMING THAT RAPE IS GOING ON IN THESE COLLEGES.IN FACT I AM SURE OF IT.
There's no way someone is going to disrupt a perfectly respectable lecture like this one to express something in such a strong way! Something definately is wrong here.
What works against these kids is that they are young women is it is a cultural custom for their voices to be drowned out by respectable men or at times even other women in power. So this is exactly why I believe they are getting assaulted the system of mysogony is working against them at it's finest.
Before you say they are just emotional I say to that you would get emotional also if you mattered so little to the system that when you cry wolf THE NEW YORK TIMES DROWNS YOU OUT!!!

When these protesters say they are for free speech, too often what they really mean is that they are for their own free speech, and anyone who disagrees with them should be censored (or apparently shouted down). It would be interesting to see what would happen if these protesters shouting down anyone whose speech they don't like were shouted down themselves when they tried to speak, or had their own speakers shouted down similarly. The reason that they can't see why free speech is so important even to them is because they are the ones doing the shouting down, but they are not experiencing their own speech being shouted down similarly. They behave like toddlers who feel that they should be free to play with any other toddler's toys, but no other toddlers should be allowed to play with their toys. It's long past time for them to grow up and behave like adults who realize that other people have just as much rights as they do.

if designing the survey i might try and express it that way. "would you support your being silenced on subjective grounds in the name of the public good". But the problem with voluntary surveys is people can simply not return them if answering them honestly becomes incriminating.

Dear Christina, about 10 years ago I worked in the main Brazilian statistical institute: a government agency that is responsible for measuring inflation, population growth, unemployment levels and ... gender pay gap.
Working at this institute I realized that I had been deceived by the media, academy and politicians on this subject, but I could not find anyone who confronted this data.
That's when - by searching the internet - I met you.
You have guided me to a whole new world of ideas, from you, I met new thinkers, reformulated most of my political convictions. I left the left guided by you (and Sowell, and Scruton, and Karen Straughan... and a lot of privileged minds I met once I met you)
I thank you so much for that.
Brazil suffers the same as the US on these issues of 'minorities' and 'freedom of expression'. Months ago I myself was cursed and physically assaulted by university students and professors in a college where I study (the second most important university here) by questioning - in a lecture - the data of a fraudulent survey on deaths motivated by prejudice against homosexual women (they include as "death motivated by prejudice against lesbians" any death of lesbian - including assaulting lesbian who died after the stolen car he was driving to overturn, during a police chase).
I always mention you in my conversations on the subject and there is a large and growing legion of people inspired by your work here. Thank you.

I'm a parent of two teens, and one is heading to university this fall. Nowhere in all their formal schooling (we homeschooled for a few years) were they taught to read much of anything, to think critically, to debate, or to see things from alternate perspectives.
Their teachers (here in Canada) are all of one single political stripe and entirely beholden to left-wing unions. They spout any and all of their personal or union views with complete impunity, but don't teach children how to think, or that educated debate is healthy (critical!) for a democracy. Not only don't they learn about the values that created our nation and the West, but their heads are filled with every possible sort of SJW trash.
NOT SURPRISING that they land in colleges and universities as junior-SJWers, are unable to think for themselves, and 'feel threatened' by what they 'feel' are 'dangerous' opinions. All I can do is arm my children with information and knowledge, but it feels like they're swimming against a current of wilful ignorance bordering on fascism.
Additionally, Canada's current government (headed by uneducated train wreck Justin Trudeau) is run by the same SJW people who are screaming at these speakers, and they're CREATING new legislation into LAW that gags and stifles free speech. So these idiots are emboldened everywhere.
Thank God for Hoff Sommers, Jordan Peterson, Gad Saad, Camille Paglia, Dave Rubin, and others!!!

    • @victorcates9330

I think the problem starts much earlier. Children have a tendency to like clear morality. Education also wants to teach lessons about issues but has limited interest in moral complexity (like telling kids in the right circumstances, they'd be nazi prison guards). Children's media often deals with the child messiah overcoming the evil, ugly adult or a society that's a thin metaphor for their parents and teachers. If you've been raised to think you're the hero not the fascist, then you can be a fascist with blissful ignorance. If evil is constructed as external, it's not constructed as something inside. Additionally, teachers and parents are expected to be encouraging even if kids are bravely not letting their inability to think affect their desire to parade how wonderful they think they are.
Universities are the intersections of different pipelines in terms of lecturers and students. To change anything, you'd likely need to affect changes at various levels. I doubt you're going to have any luck trying to overthrow the self esteem movement or infiltrating educational theory.
nb: there's probably some kind of balance to be achieved between making kids pronoid with excessive praise and a side of infantalism and traumatizing them with criticism and a dangerous moral universe. And I'd note that any account of the instinct to censor is likely to be incomplete. There's likely to be different things in play.

    • @victorcates9330
      @victorcates9330 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Mike Schnobrich Culture tends to have an arbitrariness, but I think psychology has some clearish ideas about what constitutes adulthood or mental health. And there are practical requirements to even have a society. I think you use these as moral precepts or for deriving them. Granted with some of this stuff (self esteem, assertiveness, confidence, compromise, shelter, exposure), too much or too little for a kid and you're cultivating a disorder.

Or better yet, find other forms of entertainment aside from showing up a speech that no one is obligated to attend to begin with, for the express purpose of shouting that person down. I mean think about it...if folks started buying tickets to a Tyler Perry movie for the express purpose of disrupting the show or showing up at a Fifty Shades flick just to screeching about rape culture, no one would think of trying to market these lunatics as heroes. We'd rightly cart them off to a psych ward where they could get the stability that they require

Such an important point! The growing conflation of speech and violence is truly a frightening trend. In Canada, where I now live, there is a creeping trend in law to criminalize speech. What they call hate speech may not be things that we want to hear (or even need to hear) but outlawing it is wrong on its face.

Is this a late April Fools video? I am so shocked at people even remotely thinking that Sommers is a fascist, and a "well known one" at that. I'm frightened by the fact that it is accepted to shout down people you don't agree with and just label them a fascist... Which sounds an awful lot like fascism. Never would I have guessed that someone as calm and rational like Sommers would be protested. I would expect this (albeit disapprove it) at a lecture by someone like Yiannopoulos, who can have some very controversial "hot takes". What an absolute bizarre world we are living in right now.

In the same time frame we had Roe v Wade, the explosion of "no fault" divorce, and rather than giving a "problem" child a swift hard smack on the ass or finger snap the top of the head, we decided it would be far better to chemically delete their personalities altogether. The question is, why is one person's lived experience more important than another person's? Why should one be treated as sacred and protected, and the other not allowed to even be spoken? Why should one person deserve to be heard but not another? Do they ever think about these things, or is it supposed to be self evident.

I'm so happy I found this channel. I was raised in a very... male dominated? home. As in, my dad should never have to cook, clean, or do anything. I had to be careful of my thoughts, speech, attitude, dress, etc in order to be a lady, make men happy, and not labeled a slut. It made me who I am today, but the reason I'm happy to have found this series s because recently my mom has finally started believing in female rights and empowerment, voted for the first time, and all kinds of things I'm so proud of. Unfortunately she has been getting all her info from some misguided and crazy feminists and I can't wait to show her these videos and Christina Hoff Sommers work to hopefully help her have a more rounded, real view of where women truly have made it to and she can be proud and happy instead of sad or angry that she stepped out of her box.

    It is a troubling trend.
I wonder if the rise in intolerance of certain speech is correlated to the rise in obvious hate speech. When you have people shouting "Jews will not replace us" in Charlottesville, it seems natural to me that they would be shouted down. So, I think those kinds of examples are what many students are thinking about when they said that it is OK to protest offensive speech. But, a civil lecture, like you were giving, is not offensive speech.
I am embarrassed by loud-mouthed activists that take over lectures.

Critical thinking is no longer part of the degree course. I did a Mathematics first degree in the 1980’s and a subject called “Analysis” was a core unit in the first year. It required you to check facts first before arguing a point. Proving that 1+1=2 is actually a long and protracted process and involved philosophy. Mathematics was once one of the hardest degrees you could study, today’s many Mathematics graduates are sadly lacking basic analytical skills. I am finding those with 2.1 degrees are the least capable and those with 1st Class equivalent to the lower end of a 1980’s 2.2 degree.

This "free speech" problem is exaggerated. Only 34% of Americans graduate from college and these protests are at a handful of universities, with a small number of speakers. The vast majority of speakers talk every day at colleges and have no problem. Shouting down a speaker, while frustrating for the speaker and the audience, isn't a freedom of speech violation but an issue of decorum. Words ARE NOT violence and getting shouted down isn't violence. No one's legal rights are being violated here. Unruly students are a problem for college administrators and campus security.

I was a college student and the idea of actively disrupting a presentation at a college is something that I could never agree with no matter the topic. The fact that you were shouted down shows more then just a loss of free speech, it also shows a lack of basic respect for the people who are willing to volunteer their time to speak about the subjects that the university or college deems important.
If one is invited to speak on a college campus it is almost never an impromptu event but a scheduled one with both the students and the campus fully aware of both the person and the topic being covered. Well this can be more of an outline then anything I would find it hard to believe that they would have you speak with no understanding of what you were going to say.
This means that the actions of the faculty for not stepping in was something that I would consider shameful both for not stepping in to quiet a disruptive student during the presentation but for also not understanding that your material could cause problems within the student body when they first invited you.
Each speech is a important educational opportunity the same as any of the classes a student is enrolled in. If someone's agrees to speak on a topic they should be treated the same respect and status that a professor of the college would get during their class.

Most people can loudly and proudly admit "I am in favor of free speech*". You'd need a survey designed to see if views are remotely coherent. I mean some people could have a theoretical commitment to free speech and justify free speech spaces to ghettoize it. Or justify mental gymnastics that allow people to speak provided they can ensure no one is able to hear.

I will weep when this series ends. The factual feminist is one of the last true bastions of thought, objectivity (To a subjective standard) and intellect. A flickering candle of carefully gathered thoughts, arguments and opinions in a vast, dark sea of outrage, accusation and ignorance (Not particularly idiocy, just the state of being uninformed). We have entered the age of reputive accusatory assassination; where people don't argue the validity of a claim, rather react based upon its magnitude and shock factor.

The foundation of most of these problems in my mind boils down to the over coddling of children and a fundamental lack of a knowledge of history. The over coddling leads these children into thinking their feelings and ideas are more important than any other feelings or ideas. The lack of knowledge in History makes them perceive their hurt feelings or challenge to their ideas as oppression or an actual attack. Maybe an over simplification but hey I'm a simple guy.

I noticed that roughly 1/3 of students in my Research Methods class made negative comments about me in my course evaluations -- because I had exposed them to different points of view. I've never seen this before in my course evaluations in the past. I've also never had students walk out of my Intro Psych class for putting information that I was conveying into a social or political context. The most recent example occurred when I said that I was about to discuss how the use of antidepressants has come about in a social context. Rather than listening to what I had to say, at least one student just walked out of the room. I hope that the silent majority will start to speak out soon so that the views of the vocal minority don't take hold.

    1:10 Gaslighting.
In 2022, AEI found that: "The data are clear: The more elite the school, the more likely that its students are willing to silence speech. For elite, academically minded schools, this is not only a complete repudiation of their very mission and reason for existence, it is also deeply saddening to watch as a professor."

Maybe it’s the university’s commodification of education that is the problem, with students being turned into consumers. The paying of large sums of money for these educations creates a situation where the consumer/customers rights might be at the heart of this level of college disruption. Education seems now to be based upon ability to pay rather than intellectual capability.
Also we live in a world where many young people have been shielded from the harsh realities of life and from things that may make them feel uncomfortable, maybe due to being driven everywhere and perhaps cosseted, so when they first go into the world they are less hardened than previous generations and find that the world they believed to exist is massively different in reality.
I think the world will bend them into shape in due course, as it does us all.

More importantly that denying the one person freedom of speech is denying the community the right to hear!
That is what the three protesters were doing - not stopping the speaker and stopping the majority of students from hearing.
    That can't stand.
The majority must have a right to enforce their right to hear - even if it means denying these three right of entry.

What CHS lectures about and advocates, open inquiry and criticism of established doctrines is not "hate speech" by any stretch of the imagination. She is not advocating for women to lose the vote, for gay people to be criminalized, or for a white nationalist ethnostate. And yet she gets shouted down at college lectures like nobody's business. It's shocking. I'm old enough not to have had this nonsense all around me when I was at university, but young enough to have seen it starting.

We have allowed ourselves to become a world of whiners in the pursuit of making things nice for everybody.
Respect is good, but it must be tempered with good sense.
Every crybaby does not necessarily have a valid point.
In fact, this emotional need to enjoy a world where they are pampered is ultimately disastrous.
We will continue to grow weaker and more disconnected until enough people get fed up with those of us who would rather complain than improve their position, learn to adapt, or just learn to deal with unpleasantness and steer us back into a world where facts aren't ignored in favor of feelings.

I would disagree that free speech is in trouble on campus, I took the opportunity to talk to the protesters outside a Milo's event, way more often than not the protesters weren't even involved in the school in any capacity. I know this isn't a study of any kind, but merely my experience of being a student.
