Dalton's last Bond is here! What a great James Bond film full of fun action and dark revenge undertones. Some of the kills in this think were absolutely brutal and it must be one of the darkest James Bond films to date. Dalton again is excellent and he makes me wish he had more films, however, I am excited for Brosnan!

Definitely one of the darkest Bond films, and it set the template for the Daniel Craig films, and some of the Brosnan films. You kinda feel the Dalton effect in GoldenEye , and a little pinch of it in The World Is Not Enough.

I’m a scuba diver. If the mask is full of water (while underwater), you tilt your head right back, lift the bottom of the mask up and blow air up into it from your mouthpiece; this displaces the water, so when you push the bottom of the mask onto your face it’s completely empty. Hey presto! If you ever have to escape from a flooded van at the bottom of the sea, now you know what to do.

Dalton is my next favorite Bond after Connery. Both Dalton Bond films are great! Dalton portrayed 007 as how he was in the Fleming novels. A lot of people who did not like Dalton as Bond were so used to Moore's lighthearted and campy movies. They were expecting comedy, not the darkness of an assassin. The reason why this film does not seem as big as the previous movies was because both EON and United Artist were experiencing financial difficulties at the time and the budget was a lot less than usual. That was also why, it took so long to put together the next film after this. By that time, Dalton's contract had expired, and he decided to move on. Nevertheless, "License To Kill" was a very good movie.

The darkest violent and controversial James Bond movie ever made. After the release of License To Kill, Dalton was said to return to the franchise in GoldenEye for a Christmas 1993 release, but due to a contract dispute, he would drop out and replaced with Pierce Brosnan.

    • @stevemccullagh36

Yes and no. A whole bunch of issues, including a dispute over the Bond rights between Danjaq and United Artists, and MGM going bust, caused major delays in developing the next film, and by the time it had all been sorted out Dalton's contract had expired, so they moved on to Brosnan.

Been waiting for this pretty much ever since you started doing the Bond films. My second favourite Bond movie (after Live & Let Die), and easily one of the best in the franchise. It got slept on at the time because a lot of people weren't really interested in a darker take on Bond yet, but with the Daniel Craig movies doing sometihng similar, people have started to really warm up to this film in retrospect.
Sadly this was Dalton's final film as Bond, as it underperformed at the box office prompting MGM to waver back and forth on if they'd make any more Bond films or not. Dalton was still under contract to play Bond the entire time, and had to be readily available should they ever decide to make another movie... so for several years, he couldn't act in damn near anything, because he had to be able to run away the moment he got the phone-call from MGM. In the end he decided it wasn't worth it and quit the job, leaving the role open for another actor... who picked it up in 1995 with 'Goldeneye'.
Also, at 29:04, 'I wonder how they did that?'
...yeah, they just DID IT. That's one of the reasons I love this movie so much, the stunts are top-tier and really just excellently performed. Not only did that truck do a two-wheeler like that, it genuinely crushed that car. Absolutely magnificent work from the production team.

  • @MAMoreno
    @MAMoreno 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

This film--especially the first act--is largely an adaptation of the novel Live and Let Die and the short story The Hildebrand Rarity. It's the first Bond film that is as brutal as Ian Fleming's original stories. The film series is finally catching up to the R-rated action films of its time, such as Lethal Weapon and Die Hard. It would be interesting to see if a third Dalton film would have finally introduced the sort of things that earned those contemporary movies their stronger rating. But when the franchise returned in 1995, they toned things back a bit and didn't return to this level of intensity until Casino Royale.

Thank you for this reaction, I really needed it today. Such a pleasure. You've already seen that I unequivocally love Dalton as Bond, and these two films are among the most overlooked and underrated of the entire series. I understand they're not for everybody, but I don't think anyone can say that they're bad or not incredibly well made.
License to Kill was a surprising, but not entirely unexpected dark turn in the series, as by that point in the late 1980s it was being eclipsed by more popular and much more violent franchises like Lethal Weapon, and hence the return to a grittier, smaller scale, more realistic scenario. Some people find Dalton's performance too intimidating and even unsavory, but I love it. For me, it creates that same delicious thrill of tension you feel when Connery first executes Professor Dent in cold blood in Dr No.
The great, late David Hedison, who also appeared in Live and Let Die, is the only actor other than Jeffrey Wright to play the character Felix Leiter more than once. Wright, of course, has him beat with three films.
Come on, you can't hold it against his wife for kissing James Bond, especially Dalton as Bond, as much as she can while he's around (as long as she doesn't do anything else, LOL). It's obvious Felix doesn't, he totally understands.
I know, it's pretty shocking and horrifying when Felix loses his leg. It was just as shocking if not more so in the theater in 1989. But readers of the books already knew Felix as a person who had lost multiple limbs in a shark incident. In the novel of Thunderball he goes into battle underwater with an artificial hand and leg.
Some folks think you can't get into the water that quietly without support, and it's true, but it can be done if you have a solid amount of upper body strength. She seems pretty athletic so far.
Regarding Benicio's chilling demise, as Lazenby might say, he had a lot of guts.
And you're absolutely right, anyone who doesn't think Dalton is cool hasn't been watching the same movies.

Some of the best kills, stunts, chases, and a terrific music score from Michael Kamen, who scored Did Hard, Lethal Weapon, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and Last Action Hero to name a few. From what I read, "License To Kill" didn't do that well at the box office, and that seemed to be one reason that Dalton didn't do more Bond movies.
Just a suggestion, but you may want to check out the Gladys Knight music video for the title theme to this movie, because it's a production all its own. She added a little something extra to her single release of this song that's not in the movie version.

License to kill was, when I watched it in cinema 1989 not the same feeling as The Living Daylights. But really fast it grows and grows. Today I think License to kill is a classic and on my personell ranking on a solid 5th Rank!
The action is outstanding, John Richardson nailed the practical effects and create some of the best explosions in the series.
The movie is really dark and gritty, the music of Michael Kamen nail this mood too and Dalton is really brilliant!
It's a shame that for legal fights going over years he quitt the role in 1991. I have loved to see him in a third act!
The best Bond moment ever is when Bond is on the ground. Injured, exhausted...the movies are never so close to the novels than in this scene! This was and is a real Bond - so I agree with you.
What I like also is: Desmond Llewlyn has his biggest part in the series. I really enjoy his funny stuff.
As I wrote on your Living Daylight video: Dalton is the best Bond so far! A great actor and a great Bond! Highly recommended!

    Great review bro,
So happy that you liked this great bond movie, I saw it in the theaters back in 89, this is one of the best bond movies, both of daltons bonds are among the best 👌, dalton is the best actor to play bond, and take it from me who has read all of Ian Flemings books daltons bond is definitely the closest to Flemings vision.
    Dalton is bond James bond.

This came out the year I had just graduated. I was supposed to be out looking for a job, but this was playing in the dollar theater at the time. I took the bus to go see it every single day and sometimes twice in the same day. I must have watched this about 50 times. It was not my favorite, but I loved the feel of it as well. I was not happy Dalton would not be in GoldenEye, but once I saw GoldenEye, I was blown away. I hope you like the next one as well.

This film has five really gruesome deaths, more than all the previous put together, pretty much. Seeing Heller hanging like a ragdoll from the forklift is pure horror.

The first Bond film to earn the PG-13 rating. After 12 years and 7 films with Roger Moore, it was definitely time for a change. Great to see David Hedison reprise the role of Felix.

Very dark and Dalton was underestimated ..
Then we had the Awful ( after Goldeneye ) Brosnan .
Lol Thank god Jason Bourne came along.

that shark's scene with Felix was planned for Live and let Die originally but they seemed kinda very cruel for the joking and funny, kinda familiar tone of the Moore era that have a funnier Bond, Dalton was darker obviously in his only two movies!

This was my first james bond movie I saw in the theatre.
Seen all the others before this one.
But this film in particular really got me interested in James Bond.
Used to think oh there just a bunch a spy movies. But how this one connects felix character, mentions james bonds wife, and he also breaks the rules in this one. And also hands in his resignation.
And Q plays a longer part also.

After Licence to Kill The bond franchise got brought to a halt for 6 years because a lawsuit was filed against EON Productions and Metro Goldwyn Mayer. Which indeed led to Timothy Dalton walking away from the role of James Bond after 2 entries.

This for me is Dalton’s best, The Living Daylights has a nicer presentation and more traditional bond elements. But the plot gets lost in the 2nd half and villains were too light for Dalton, Licence to kill had a stronger story and villains that suited Dalton’s darker bond portrayal. Sanchez is charismatic and evil all at once, Robert Davi done a brilliant job and meshed with Dalton seamlessly.
I always get disappointed when Licence to Kill ends because I know this is Dalton’s last, I always felt he deserved one more film or two. It’s a shame the series went into a lawsuit preventing Dalton from coming back. He was supposed to return for Goldeneye.
Dalton was ahead of his time, most people were not ready for him in the late 80s especially after years of the jokey Roger Moore. Also Dalton had replaced Brosnan who was originally set to play bond in The Living Daylights but couldn’t get out of his TV contract, so Dalton stepped in as option 2. Ironically though Brosnan replaced Dalton for Goldeneye later on.

I could never get into the Bond movies that were made before the 80s. Just don't like older films.
Dalton had a contract to do 4 Bond movies or for so many years, whichever happened first. There was some kind of legal dispute over the Bond rights, so filming was stalled after this film.
Once the legalities cleared they asked Dalton to do Goldeneye, and said sure, I can do one more. And they said nope you will have to do at least a 3 movie contract. So he declined
