The system seems to be a tad better than the UK system at least. "Ganging up" to stop the "far-right" was tried in Sweden as well in the 2010s. Only thing that happened was that the "far-right" grew even stronger, because none of the fundamental issues were addressed, and people got even more pissed.
@@VoidOperator well the President is the head of state (like the King in the UK but with more power for example), he deals with international affairs, diplomacy and general agenda of the government whiles the Prime Minister mainly deals with domestic affairs (being from the majority party of parliament), he names his ministers, passes new laws, etc.

Germany (Chancellor) and Ireland (Taoiseach) are different. The countries with President as head of state is Cyprus, France, Lithuania, Romania (and out of EU the USA of course and others) At least as far as I understand from America, trying to figure out how all the various democracies work.

I was born in France and left several years ago, all I see over the years when I visit, is France decaying more and more. They had these results coming. You just have to listen citizen in the streets. RN secured A LOT of votes from people that are not far right minded, they are not racist or nationalists whatsoever, they are simply sick and tired of the country’s immigration policies that went to far.
A lot of countries are also sick of France in the world, good thing they kicked the french out. French can stay in their country and not use their former colonies for explotation.
As a french myself, I would like to add that with 66,3% of total participation, french citizens mobilized a lot more than usual to express their opposition to the president, from both far left and right of the political spectrum.
As someone who doesn't live in Europe, I don't see why they are considered "far-right". It's just normal "right". Macron is left, and the green\social justice party is far-left. The Republicans might be center.
It is a clear explanation, merci. I grew up French from centuries of peasants in the centre of France. I remember the Vichy government. I am a centrist and find no place for my vote. I observed the politics of democracies around the world and I despair for humanity. I found peace in the wilds of Canada where my neighbours come from all over the world and we have no problem trusting and helping each others.

Secondly, they are in alliance with a lot of left wing parties ranging from far left to centre left so it ends up being "left wing" in aggregate.
The communist party is called just left because it's REFORMIST. The far left contain revolutionary parties, like trotskists, other revolutionary communist parties, and (ultra left) anarchists

Honestly, it’s very worrying there is genuine chance of far right in France and Germany has a party that is already and gaining even more support that is legitimately talking about rounding up certain races to expel them. After France was whored out by her leaders for half a century and the French people treated like garbage by the government, I'm surprised the national party didn't get at least 40%+ in the first round.
Apparently, if you add NR supported candidates in other parties, the number comes closer to 38%. Assuming that very few immigrants vote RN, they have probably garnered over 50% of the French European portion of the populace. It will be interesting to see how the second round splits across France. If the anti-RN forces are too concentrated in larger urban areas, that won't translate into as many seats than if they were better spread out across the country. Also, with a far-left coalition being the main opponent, it's difficult to say how many people would stomach voting for them in round two simply to keep RN out of power. There's still a chance that the RN could do remarkably well, though the big question is whether they'll be able to pull a majority or majority coalition.
Can be several reasons: - People ideologically align with the far-right. - People vote "against Macaron" instead, which ends up voting for the far-right. - People don't understand what the far-right wants to do, but they want "change", and they vote for something different. - The far-right are promising some desirable things for the people, without mentioning the cost / consequences of implementing these policies. And the average voter isn't familiar enough with politics to know that there is always catch.

There's nothing wrong with the policy of "national self-preservation" on issues of internal security regarding unlimited immigration of Islamist & that Putin nuclear threat, annexations & gunpoint referendum.
The two round system is an absolute joke. It always means that you have a duopoly. It also means that if you didn't vote for one of the two front runners you will have to vote for someone you dont want to vote for. Unless the front runner gets over 50% of the vote. Its a shitty system that will always benefit centrist parties.
Not necessarily the centrist parties since some “anti-system” leftists might prefer voting for the far right than for the center. It depends on whether the usual “left to right band” topology is true or some alternative models like the horseshoe theory is more fitting to the current political trend. What is sure is that it increases greatly the gains of the largest minority. It actually already favoured the RN since they are projected to have over 40% of the seats with only 33% of the first intent votes - (a lot of centrists votes from the first round have been thrown to the trash).
That also why I have never bought into the argument that the two round systems was a better “wall against the extremes” rather than a proportional vote. Yes when the moderates are the largest minority it feels right to (some of) them that their 30-35% turn into more than half of the seats, but when the largest minority will be the far right will they notice the problem? If the system was proportional, a 65%+ moderate coalition against the RN would be already signed and a clear winner of the election.
Thank you for this video which summarizes and explains sufficiently the functioning of our institutions for a non-French audience. It would undoubtedly be necessary to further develop the specificities of each party or political family and especially the context of the collapse of President Macron's popularity.

Another French fan here, yeah you got it right! Very good explanation for non French speakers. I'd have appreciated if you'd shown the non metropolitan constituencies (there's quite a few). Another detail is that our députés aren't meant to "represent their constistuency" (they're not representative of a territory, they're national assembly). Another detail is that part of LR decided to run with RN, meaning that the cordon sanitaire is sorta-kinda broken on their end, and more than a few right wing candidates that came in third place but are still qualified for round 2 said something like "nah i'm not dropping off because [left] candidate is also an extremist". Gabriel Attal did say "y'all should drop out and vote for NFP if RN came in first and you came in third" to his own side (Macron's side), but others said "only if the other party goes from communist party to te greens to other republicans" (aka saying the left coalition is fine except for "La France Insoumise" candidates, which is... well, kinda eh). He is absolutely not left wing in the French political landscape when taking into account all the policies he has done. He is rather center-right overall, with few left policies to try to appeal to center-left voters (which has worked in 2017 and also to a lesser extent in 2022).

The 3-way qualification (or "tie" kinda) rule is based on the total amount of voters POSSIBLE in an area, not the actual voters%. This means that if you take last time's numbers of actual voters - around 44% - you'd need each candidate to reach about 27-ish% of the actual votes to reach the second round instead of the rule's 12.5% since that numbers is weighted by the amount of actual voters vs total voters. The fact that this election had a much larger amount of voters (about 66%) means that the threshold to reach 2nd round is "easier" and facilitates the presence of all 3 "main" parties in the second round with over half the seats up for grab in a 3-way tie (about 300 out of the 577)

Everytime the situation is complicated for Macron, he decided to change the name and the logo. Like that, he can say "look my politics change, let's move on and forget the past". I think some big enterprise have the same logic when they are in a bad situation. Because the cost of living is extremely high for some, while the wealthiest barely notice a thing. So educated and working class people want the richest to get taxed fairly. This is generally how us nordic countries function, by having a progressive tax system which more equally distribute tax money. I kinda hope the National Rally wins an absolute majority. Bardella is pretty clearly trying to avoid becoming PM, so that the french system can be dysfunctional for a couple years, and then when 2027 comes around they can blame Macron and the dysfunctional parliament for any issues in the country, and come to absolute power without needing to compromise. If they win a majority he then has to be PM, offering a chance for him to fuck up and potentially reduce any victory in 2027.

A big correction: in case of an absolute RN majority and cohabitation between Macron and Bardella, there would of course be tensions but NOT gridlock. The President cannot really block anything and is not really in charge of the executive, in case of cohabitation the regime changes into a more standard parliamentary regime where the Prime Minister is the real leader, able to enact his policies, while the President is only relegated to symbolic and diplomatic roles.
In California, US we use the two round system but we call it universal primary for the first round of voting and the general election as 2nd round of voting where two people regardless of party affiliation run. It is and has happened where you only have two republicans or two democrats run. We also have an independent that won a seat in the state assembly
The rules for the election are slightly more complicated. 1) in order to be elected in the first round, you need 50% of the votes, AND 25% of the potential voters. Hence a potential second round in places where not enough people voted. 2) At least 2 candidates are admitted to the second round, even if none or one has the required 12%.

Apparently, if you add NR supported candidates in other parties, the number comes closer to 38%. Assuming that very few immigrants vote RN, they have probably garnered over 50% of the French European portion of the populace. It will be interesting to see how the second round splits across France. If the anti-RN forces are too concentrated in larger urban areas, that won't translate into as many seats than if they were better spread out across the country. Also, with a far-left coalition being the main opponent, it's difficult to say how many people would stomach voting for them in round two simply to keep RN out of power. There's still a chance that the RN could do remarkably well, though the big question is whether they'll be able to pull a majority or majority coalition.

Can be several reasons:
- People ideologically align with the far-right.
- People vote "against Macaron" instead, which ends up voting for the far-right.
- People don't understand what the far-right wants to do, but they want "change", and they vote for something different.
- The far-right are promising some desirable things for the people, without mentioning the cost / consequences of implementing these policies. And the average voter isn't familiar enough with politics to know that there is always catch.

There's nothing wrong with the policy of "national self-preservation" on issues of internal security regarding unlimited immigration of Islamist & that Putin nuclear threat, annexations & gunpoint referendum.
The two round system is an absolute joke. It always means that you have a duopoly. It also means that if you didn't vote for one of the two front runners you will have to vote for someone you dont want to vote for. Unless the front runner gets over 50% of the vote.

Not necessarily the centrist parties since some “anti-system” leftists might prefer voting for the far right than for the center. It depends on whether the usual “left to right band” topology is true or some alternative models like the horseshoe theory is more fitting to the current political trend. What is sure is that it increases greatly the gains of the largest minority. It actually already favoured the RN since they are projected to have over 40% of the seats with only 33% of the first intent votes - (a lot of centrists votes from the first round have been thrown to the trash).
That also why I have never bought into the argument that the two round systems was a better “wall against the extremes” rather than a proportional vote. Yes when the moderates are the largest minority it feels right to (some of) them that their 30-35% turn into more than half of the seats, but when the largest minority will be the far right will they notice the problem? If the system was proportional, a 65%+ moderate coalition against the RN would be already signed and a clear winner of the election.

I'd have appreciated if you'd shown the non metropolitan constituencies (there's quite a few). Another detail is that our députés aren't meant to "represent their constistuency" (they're not representative of a territory, they're national assembly).
Another detail is that part of LR decided to run with RN, meaning that the cordon sanitaire is sorta-kinda broken on their end, and more than a few right wing candidates that came in third place but are still qualified for round 2 said something like "nah i'm not dropping off because [left] candidate is also an extremist". Gabriel Attal did say "y'all should drop out and vote for NFP if RN came in first and you came in third" to his own side (Macron's side), but others said "only if the other party goes from communist party to te greens to other republicans" (aka saying the left coalition is fine except for "La France Insoumise" candidates, which is... well, kinda eh).

He is absolutely not left wing in the French political landscape when taking into account all the policies he has done. He is rather center-right overall, with few left policies to try to appeal to center-left voters (which has worked in 2017 and also to a lesser extent in 2022).
Macron has done virtually nothing for the left. He’s economically right through and through without a single left policy in 7 years.
France is a communist country in comparison to England or the US, even Marine Le Pen would be viewed as a leftist in America

(Oui oui baguette here) There's one point you eluded at that i'd like to clarify.
The 3-way qualification (or "tie" kinda) rule is based on the total amount of voters POSSIBLE in an area, not the actual voters%. This means that if you take last time's numbers of actual voters - around 44% - you'd need each candidate to reach about 27-ish% of the actual votes to reach the second round instead of the rule's 12.5% since that numbers is weighted by the amount of actual voters vs total voters.
The fact that this election had a much larger amount of voters (about 66%) means that the threshold to reach 2nd round is "easier" and facilitates the presence of all 3 "main" parties in the second round with over half the seats up for grab in a 3-way tie (about 300 out of the 577)

Macron changes the name of the party very often. Before we had " La France en marche", after we had "En marche", and now "Renaissance" ... Everytime the situation is complicated for Macron, he decided to change the name and the logo. Like that, he can say "look my politics change, let's move on and forget the past". I think some big enterprise have the same logic when they are in a bad situation.
"Ensemble" is the name of the parliament group, inside you have some center and right politics party like "Horizon", "MoDem" and th Macron's party "Renaissance"

Older American here. Very good video, thank you. It would be nice to know the powers / functions of the President vs. the Prime Minister. Assuming that what the video presented is accurate, I find it interesting that a party like the NFP would be so popular. What's the reason for their popularity?
Because the cost of living is extremely high for some, while the wealthiest barely notice a thing. So educated and working class people want the richest to get taxed fairly. This is generally how us nordic countries function, by having a progressive tax system which more equally distribute tax money. Also theres the issues of racism and womens rights which would get left in the dust if le pens party wins

A big correction: in case of an absolute RN majority and cohabitation between Macron and Bardella, there would of course be tensions but NOT gridlock. The President cannot really block anything and is not really in charge of the executive, in case of cohabitation the regime changes into a more standard parliamentary regime where the Prime Minister is the real leader, able to enact his policies, while the President is only relegated to symbolic and diplomatic roles.

In California, US we use the two round system but we call it universal primary for the first round of voting and the general election as 2nd round of voting where two people regardless of party affiliation run. It is and has happened where you only have two republicans or two democrats run. We also have an independent that won a seat in the state assembly
The rules for the election are slightly more complicated. 1) in order to be elected in the first round, you need 50% of the votes, AND 25% of the potential voters. Hence a potential second round in places where not enough people voted. 2) At least 2 candidates are admitted to the second round, even if none or one has the required 12%.
