- Queen Victoria was Queen of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Known as the Victorian era, her reign of 63 years and seven months was longer than any previous British monarch. It was a period of industrial, political, scientific, and military change within the United Kingdom, and was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire. In 1876, Parliament voted to grant her the additional title of Empress of India.

The switching from the painting to the real life photos are extremely interesting to watch
I thought it was remarkable how similar she looked in paintings to her actual photographs.
Because in reality a painting is an artists interpretation, it's not a true image. But seeing this montage gave me hope that paintings of historical figures are actually somewhat accurate to real photos!
It's so surreal to see her younger appearance recorded in paintings and then see photos of her as she aged.
Really showed the advent of the modern or industrial era which her reign transcended.
She certainly aged rapidly following the death of Prince Albert.
I'm not sure if it was intentional, but I liked the way the music changed as soon as she turned 43 (Albert died when Victoria was 42).
That usually happens after a spouse passes away. It’s hard to lose someone you loved with all your heart.
It could have been from depression, weight gain, or stress.
I thought the same thing. She was devastated when he died and only wore black after he died

During the period where they had both photographs and paintings, it's interesting to see the differences. The artists tended to use what we would call a "beauty filter" in their painting while the photographs of the time had no filters. In the paintings, her lips are fuller and her mouth smaller. The eyes are wide and expressive. In the photographs, her lips are thinner and beginning to turn down, and her eyes are smaller, too. She looks tired. Makes me wonder how accurate paintings (pre-photography) are in telling how someone really looked.
At 67 she finally learned to smile.🌹
Then promptly forgot
After her husband's death she fell into a deep depression which led to her not being able to smile
Well, her husband's death cause a lot of pain for her.
Hahaha it was pretty hard to keep a smile on for old photos. You would have to put a smile and keep it unchanged for 30 minutes:P
She is missunderstood in that aspect because modern people dont know..

She lived for 82 years, she lost her husband and mother in 1861, her father died when she was just a few months old, although she lost all her elder, husband and sibling, but she stayed together with her 9 children, 42 grandchildren and 50 more great grandchildren, in total 87 great grandchildren, some great grandchildren wasn't born when Victoria died.
She lost 3 of her children and several grandchildren before she died
I still used to wonder how artists back then were so great at painting. I mean, they didn't have any painting tutorials, techniques etc... But yet, in this era, we can't paint as good as paintings were at that time.
Beatrice looks quite a bit like Queen Victoria. It's the eyes, I think. And I'm not knocking Beatrice. I think she's lovely. People are always so cruel about her looks.
I like her also, she looked so beautiful on her wedding day.
P.S Can see resemblance in her to Queen Victoria, now you mentioned similarities in eyes.
Beatrice was beautiful but sadly being widow at young age. Both she and her mother had the same fate

I usually don't trust the accuracy of historical paintings, but the ones from the UK and Spain starting from the 1800s have always seemed to be the most accurate. They really got every detail as good as they could

@@lalropuiihrahsel9584 yes, I read that he was the love of her life and she loved him dearly. She loved her children but loved her husband, Albert, even more. That is why after his death, Queen Victoria always looks so solemn 😞. I know the feeling- - my husband passed away some years back and I still mourn him. So sad when you lose a loved one 😢.

The baby she’s holding in photo 75 is Edward VIII/The Duke of Windsor. He lived until 1972. Queen Victoria was born in the reign of George III and was alive at the same time as someone who could conceivably have watched Doctor Who.
Victoria's last surviving grandchild, Princess Alice Countess of Athlone died in 1981
There’s a daguerreotype photo I saw years ago of a very old man and his great granddaughter. It was 1847 and he was 101 and she was 2. There they were together that day but his life began in 1746 during the Jacobite rebellion and hers ended in 1942 at the height of WWII.

Actually the empire didn't reach its greatest extent until nearly 20 years after she died

And absolutely piled on the weight. She only controlled her gargantuan appetite to keep herself physically desirable for Albert, once he was gone there was no point and she spent the next four decades comfort eating.

I mean, this is the Victorian era, the cameras at the time take an hour to just get one photo. You can't expect anyone to sit down and smile for an entire hour.

The early daguerreotype took about 20 minutes, but by the 1840’s when it was possible to actually photograph people, it already only took 20 seconds of exposure. With the introduction of dry plate photography in the late 1870’s, photographs took less than a second, this method became mainstream very quickly, and even videography became possible in the 1890’s. The main reason people typically did not smile in portraits during the Victorian era is less because of long exposure times and more because photography was new and expensive, so sessions were considered special occasions. Even in earlier photography where exposure was still around 20 seconds long, you can still find portraits of people smiling and even laughing :)

She was so beautiful ! My ex wife and pretty much most of my girlfriends look quite similar to her when she was aged between say 16 to 40.. She lost the love of her life which was more important to her than anything else.. Poor woman.. He was her rock..

If Queen Victoria would live until 1910, She will be 91 years old and 73 years of her regime can surpass over French King Louis XIV.
He became king at 5, and didn't assume his duties until he was 23. Maybe he was technically the longest reigning monarch, but not in reality.

Or maybe the portraits are usually over exaggerated. The painters are usually pressurised by royals to paint them in the most beautiful way.
King henry the VIIIth used to give death threats to his painter Holbien to paint him such a way to make him look younger

The paintings always made the Queen look more attractive than she was. She was homely and bug eyed
That, apparently, was common place. I read George Washington specifically asked the painter to make him look better. In reality, he had a terrible underbite, protruding lower jaw, unattractive nose, and no teeth. He wore dental prosthetic teeth, and they were not wooden, as many have previously believed.
The lack of photography, basically, helped many portray an image that was far from the truth.

The painters of the day were expected to make them look better than they were. Actually, we are doing the same thing today. Professional photography portraits “touch up”, use lighting, shadows, makeup to enhance the subjects features.
The British Royals, the senior ones, as I’ve read, are not allowed to have any cosmetic surgery. They don’t pluck eyebrows(the younger ones may) neutral nail polish and lip rouge, minimal eye makeup. QEII let her hair go grey. Their portraits look good though.

She was the widow of HRH Prince consort Albert and the Grandmother of Europe. She died in Osborne House in 1901. Today, Queen Victoria is the great-great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II. Now, Queen Elizabeth II is the widow of HRH Prince consort Philip of Edinburgh (1921-2021).

3:40 is a pretty singular picture, in that Queen Victoria is smiling and blinking (probably both no-no's in 1800's portraits.

It's kinda weird seeing this paintings to photos transitions of time because... idk with the paintings felt like it was like a mysterious dreamy moment like you are curious how they look like or like it was a fairytale. But with photos it definetly made happy to see how they looked like, but it was not that magic I will say back then. And for example with Elizabeth being the first Monarch to have full HD photos of herself and in color since she was young makes me kinda uncomfortsble seeing her in paintings because I know she doesn't look like in the painting.
