The steel hook made in Japan could be a Tulip. My grandmother had a set predating WWII. After Pearl Harbor my grandfather donated them to the war effort. Fortunately he missed the one she used the most and I ended up with it. I've never seen another one and I'm 71.
L❤VE Your Knitted Vest from Gary ❤🥰! His work is so gorgeous ❤❤❤🥰!
Thank You Mr. BOD for taking care of our Girl ❤🥰! He was so cute cleaning up behind You Crystal 🥰❤! I got so excited about Your Hooks that I forgot until I watched it several times, lol 😂😂😂! Love You Guy's & Have an awesome weekend 🌻❤🥰!
I love your hubby was picking up all the packing quietly behind you! Hahaa
I learned how to knit and crochet with that How to book. bought it at Woolworth's Dime store about 1963 and remember sitting up all night trying to learn how to purl! Still have to book and it is one of my treasures!
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!! Can you do a follow-up on the hooks you researched? Maybe some info on how to determine if a hook is old? And some history of some of manufacturers that are "extinct" or manufactures that have changed names? Being a history buff, this was a wonderful video!! I had no idea there was so much info/history about hooks. Awesome video!!
Corinna from Just Vintage Crochet would love all those vintage patterns and thread.
I thought they same thing when I saw all that thread. I love Corinna!
I thought the same thing also about Corinna.
I would like to think that all the crochet hooks and thread of my mom's went to a collector like you. I actually had to stop crocheting just to watch the pure joy you had discovering some really fascinating finds. I had given her supplies away after she passed before myself and my daughter took up crocheting. It's something I regret, so imagining that they went to someone who truly loves them and could see the stories each hook, book and left over yarn and thread, makes it feel like she is still enjoying them through someone else.
Those wooden one I imagine a young boy without much money for Christmas painstakingly making them for his momma, and presenting with pride on Christmas day. Thank you for giving these hooks and needles a new lease on life with someone who will enjoy them.
I love the way you toss the packing paper over your shoulder. You're like a little kid at Christmas -- always so thrilled to see what's in the box! Your joy is contagious. Your videos always cheer me up.
Hi Crystal, lovely video as always, love to see that joy on your face when you open boxes. Those crochet hooks with the thingy on the end are older, they are VINTAGE SUSAN BATES CLIPSON CROCHET HOOKS , some come with enameled tops. This is from the box the came in. The back of the original package reads as follows.
Dear Needleworker:
Here is your Susan Bates Clipson crochet hook. Your Clipson crochet hook has the permanent stitch-saver clip. Slip the last loop of your work under the special clip to prevent those annoying dropped stitches and unraveling, Clipson marks your place when you set your work aside. And Clipson’s colorful knobs easily identify the size hook you are looking for. One more thing you Clipson has the famous “in-line” head {such an improvement over the old fashioned type of hook} to help you crochet smoother - faster-easier-and make your work much more beautiful. Hope this helps. What a wonderful treasure of goodies you got. Enjoy!!!
I wish I had my own genie that comes around & silently picks up my trash (w/out any lecture!) :]]
My maternal grandmother was the first generation born to German emergrants here in the USA. Alll the women in her family were crocheters and brought their hooks with them. I've been lucky enough to have a lot of them passed to when the older ladies started dying off. That very long thin one with hooks at either ends used to have a cap on it. When you used the hook, the cap covered the end that you weren't using to protect it from catching on your work. I have another old steel one that has turned black with age. Very slim and it has a tiny ddouble headed German eagle on the thumb rest. Some of the hooks show an incredible amount of age, which the shafts are becoming thin and one hook is bent and looks llike it was very badly bent at one time and wasn't fully straightened. Have fun with the new hooks!
My Great Aunts used the unique end for many things with crochet! It was invented to help you when crocheting or tatting! This was invented so if you didn’t have a good grip on your thread then it would hold it in place as you crocheted. My Great Aunts would use more than one crochet hook to crochet the item that they were crocheting on. They would use the end thing to hold the project in place while they crocheted further on down the row. They would use one hook to crochet and another to catch the crochet and pull it through! It was extremely fascinating to watch! They said that this is how they crochet because the arthritis in their hands would impede on what they wanted to make. They also used it to hold the crochet together so it wouldn’t unravel while making the project. The two hooks with the stars and wooden handles were made to help people with arthritis so that they could crochet still. Mr. BOD is a keeper! It’s so very good of him to straighten things up and hand you the crochet hook! My parents and grandparents knew of some men that would go out and find wood for making crochet hooks for their wives because they couldn’t afford any crochet hooks at that time. It was easy to get wool in those times but not the hooks. The husband would borrow some hooks from another woman who crocheted and made sure they were the right size that their wife wanted. This brings up so many good memories of the past for me! Thank You Chrystal! You are such an angel! Your singing is just perfect! It brightens my day!
Good job Eric, cleaning up after our girl 😂😂😂😂
I have a hand-carved crochet hook too. Back in the 80's there was a young man who inherited a large estate from his parents it was too expensive for him to run with his sister, so he began carving crochet hooks and selling them to make some extra money. You sent the man the specs of the hook you wanted (like a Bates, like a Boye, and what size or sizes you wanted) and he sent them to you. I think mine came from someplace in Oregon (made from a type of Cherry Tree) as they were made from various kinds of wood found on the estate. His sister belonged to an old Crochet Forum, and she was selling them to other members of the forum. Cool idea for making money doing something you love.
Another awesome segment. What a nice and romatic like story of a signoficant others love , to carve crochet hooks in order to promote a craft. Im an avid reader of harleguinn romance books. Debbie Maccomber is also a knitter in fact as of 1998 she was the president of Warm up of America. Of which makes lap covers for Nsg Home cancer patients etc. Your auction haul of needles is a dream. The beautiful vest Gary of Urban knits looks nice also. Keep up being you kind ,caring self. IRIS
Awesome score! The joy of old things & the stories we imagine. LOVE IT.❤ When I wanted to learn how to do tunisian crochet, I couldn't find any hooks where I lived. So I went to the hardware store and bought a dowel and carved a hook at one end and glued a big button at the other. Necessity is the mother of invention!
Oh man, my eyes turned into saucers seeing that first box. Have to admit, I'm a tad jealous - I adore old thread. The older threads are better quality, and came in so many colors. Newer threads are poorer quality, and it's near impossible to find size 20 and 30 in stores, let alone in colors other than white or ecru. Also, on the whole, threads have risen in price quite a bit.
What great finds. Thanks for sharing, Crystal!
Wow,you won someone’s treasure from way back, how fortunate for you🥰
You are never boring 😊I learn so much about the needles and hooks received from my Grandmother and mother.❤ The sweater Gary created is beautiful 😍
I love Gary's knitted vest! Its gorgeous! Congratulations on your winnings! XXX💜
I have a crochet hook hand carved by my great grandfather that my great grandmother used so much it actually curved to her hand. It is one of my absolute favorite hooks. I keep it in a separate box and marked on its own. It’s a family treasure as well as a crochet treasure. I will never part with it
Wow, what an incredibly special hook!
Oh that green how to book is the same book my grandma gave me when I was a kid and she was teaching me to crochet. I'm in my mid 60s.
2:28 a.m. in Minnesota. hi you all. Yep, haven’t been to bed yet. Love ya all❤
Coats and Clark thread brought back memories of my mom crocheting dollies.❤
Thanks for sharing 😊 I love older hooks and stuff as well. I was at a thrift shop looking for some and came across an unopened package of the Nelson Rockford Red Heel Socks with the instructions for the sock monkey and Sock elephant.
Way off subject, I just got a labradoodle puppy a few weeks ago and EVERYTIME he heard you on my phone he RUNS to jump on my lap and watch you 😂😂😂😂 He loves to listen to you talk, and he will raise a paw like he'd waving
Washing dishes and watching you. Love to hear about hook history 😂.
What neat treasures! I love old things too, and when names and notes are hand written, it warms my heart knowing their life has touched mine. ❤
Fascinating! I wonder about the people who used the old hooks, their life circumstance, and what projects they created. Anyone else wonder if OUR hooks from today will interest anyone in 100 or so years? thanks for sharing this, Crystal. 💜🤗
My two favourite and most used hooks were inherited from my late MIL. A Phantom 3 1/4 and a Stratnoid No 12. Always feel a sense of connection when I use them.
I have a carved bone hook I inherited when my Mom passed that belonged to my great-grandmother, which possibly belonged to her mother. My great-grandmother was born in 1901.
A video about tour crochet hook collection would be such a joy to watch!
That booklet that you showed on learn to crochet is how i taught myself to crochet in 1971 when I was pregnant with my daughter. I was a teacher and it was summer.
Oh, I love that vest Gary made you. It's beautiful!
Those names of crochet cotton sure bring back memories! The hand carved ones are so beautiful. Don't you wish you knew the history!
The knitting needles look like many i have that were passed down. I even have some bakelite and bone needles from the UK and Canada. I do tey to use them and shre them out among the grandies who craft.
The channel called just vintage crochet check her out if you haven't yet xx
I love Corinna! ❤ Her channel "Just Vintage" is so much fun 🎉
Nice haul. I like how your husband quietly cleans up the paper from your unboxing.
Hand carved hooks are great. My Aunt carved her knitting needles so they would fit her hands after arthritis set in.
What a find... I'm 75 and when I was little, my Mom use to make rag rugs with a crochet hook she widdled out. Sure would love to have that hook !!
This was so much fun to go through with you! I am a knitter but i enjoy your you tube videos. I love seeing all the various types of yarn you share with us. One thing to remember is to not go too fast when you are showing items to us. Sometimes you get so excited you barely show it. I noticed that with the hooks and needles in this video 😊 I love antiques too and i didn't hardly comprehend what I was seeing. I am not criticising or complaining. I am just reminding. You are so knowledgeable and I could never do what you do. Thank you for sharing that with us. 🤎
Your buddy Gary did an excellent job on your vest. What an amazing stroll through crochet history with the vintage thread and hooks!
We don't call them vests in England, it's a tank top!
I love the hooks, every time I go to a yard sale, I always look for hooks & yarn. I have bought a substantial amount of hooks now I have plenty of J & I hooks so I can leave them with my wips, no guessing when I get back to them. Heeheehaha 😊😅 stay safe, be well. 🐑🐑🐑🐑🌈🦙🦙🦙🦙
I have 4 bone crochet hooks that were my grandma’s. I am 83, so you know that was a long time ago. From the size, she worked with threads.
46:25, hook- Millward, oh that took me back! My Grannie taught me and used those! What an awesome find! You lucky devil! 🎉
I’m with you, the hand carved ones would be the treasure in the box!
Fun video! You got me checking the hooks my daughter got me from a yard sale. I got a Hero! But it's made in England. I also got a Boye with $10 cents stamped on it.
I love all of your videos, but I REALLY enjoyed this one. I too love old things. Especially old crochet things. And I love old doily books the most. I inherited a lot from my grandma who taught me to crochet and those old books always bring back fond memories. Thanks for sharing this.
I’m the only female in my family that crochet. I found out my older sister has the mom and grandma’s hooks. I just want to see them. I’m 75 I also knit.
You like old stuff....you would like me! 😆😂🤣
Boye oh Boye did you ever get a haul!!!
The hand carved wooden & Bone crochet hooks & knitting needles are the absolute favorite find for me . I'd frame them.
Love you tossing the paper over your head! 😂
I love your vest. So much excitement the way you toss the paper over your shoulder. I love it.
The knitted vest and Bennie are amazing. March just right.
I think Mr Bod is a bit of a hero, he came and picked up all the wrapping and boxes. You have some lovely hooks and knitting needles in that stash for sure.
This was so freaking cool! I love looking at vintage stuff. This makes me want to go to my local flea markets to look for crochet hooks.
I have my grandmothers crochet hook that was handmade. She was in in 90s and passed away in the 80s.
Amazing finds❤ I have some of my grandmothers old hooks from home in Germany. Thank you for sharing 😊
Hi Mr. BOD 👋🏻
I have a lot of vintage hooks. I recently got a set of Lee Wards Steel hooks made in Germany. They are rusty and I haven't looked into how to clean them up yet, because I don't want to ruin them. That auction also had 3 Hero hooks in it. I love looking at all the old yarn working tools.
Does anyone know the best way to clean off the rust from the old steel hooks without damaging them?
Sadly, someone got rid of all of my grandma's crochet supplies before moving her into assisted living before she passed. I'm the only grandchild who she taught to crochet and because I lived in Georgia and she was in Ohio, no one thought to ask me. Just devastating. 😥 So glad you got a good haul, Crystal! Thx for sharing😊👍🧶
The Steele hooks with Japan on them, I believe are Clover hooks❣️I was gifted some Japan hooks & was told they are Clover. Enjoy your Well Loved Hooks. It would have been awesome if a picture was sent of her with a short bio. Great find 🥰
Great scores! The Buddy Holly song "Oh, Boy!" kept going through my head while watching this - lols! I'm not mad about it, either. Hugs & love!
👋 Crystal! Oh Boy, Boye, Boye...when you found the Hero hooks, your other Hero Eric was behind you picking up the packaging. Great auction finds! 😊 😃 😀
My adopted grandmother made me a dress for my doll. The material of the dress is in rags, but the crocheted part is in perfect condition.
Crystal, I really enjoyed seeing you with those hooks. I am from Wales in the UK and the one made in England is probably a Millward. They made hooks and needles. I still have some from when I was a child and learnt to crochet and I am in my seventies now. You have prompted me to look up my old hooks and see what I’ve got and perhaps start collecting them . Thank you so much, Lin
Hi Crystal! I'm so glad you had such good success with your auction finds. I think it would be so fun to try crocheting with the hand-carved hooks, and see how they work. I have two antique bone hooks that one of my penpals sent me from England, and I feel honored to have them. Sending lots of good wishes your way. Thank you for your videos!
I would love a long video on all your vintage hooks, i have a lot of vintage hooks as well. My family has a tradition going back for generations that girl children by the age of 6 must learn knit or crochet. They got taught but most didnt stick with it and all those forgotten hooks/needles are rescued by me. I even have a few steel I and G hooks. Hero, gem, milwards, zephers, marcia lynn"... Beautifully made usa bates and boye. Forgotten classics. Hero also made nice steel and tunisian hooks, tunisian didnt carry the hero branding but most were stored in their plastic cases.
WOW! 9 Hero hooks! I only counted 5, so I missed you telling us about the other 4. GREAT CATCH, Crystal!
SUCH a COOL vintage haul!!! Very very groovy and it makes me SO HAPPY to watch you open ANY package! So cool. Hi to Mt. BoD!!! 😂
The vest Gary knitted up is stunning! 🤎
Another fab video, Crystal! Xx☺️🧶🫶🏻 Square Granny
I’m big on vintage to. Just last week I found a bag of vintage crochet hooks with several hero hooks and a few Susan Bate hooks that had a 29 cents embossed on it. Super cool find. I want to start make Dollie’s I just love them.I enjoyed this video very much.
I enjoy the way you appreciate the small things!!
I never thought too much about my hooks til I started watching you. I didn't realize there was such a variety and big differences! Thank you for all your insite!!! 😊now I know why some are my favorites
Made in Germany are the very best vintage you can buy , made in the USA Susan Bates are my favorites next to the German, which are probably Hero, Gem ,orJMRA, also good are English AERO You really got some treasures
That was so exciting and so much fun. Thank you, Crystal 🧶 💚
Love all the hooks, wish I could open a box like that. Info on the brands was great
Hi Crystal! What you are wearing is so pretty. Thank you, was a very interesting video . I follow Gary from Urban Yarn and the yarns here in Canada is not cheap at all, I buy a lot at walmart and also at st-Vincent de Paul for 50 cents a ball. It is like good will in the US. Thank you for your videos you are very interesting and inspiring!
Hey Crystal!! I just won some beautiful yarn, and girl it’s Christmas yarn! I wish I could show you!
Amazing… I didn’t realize that I have a bunch of hooks that are like what you were showing. I also have a ivory hook from Okinawa. At least that’s what I was told.
Hi 😊👋 awesome haul great information i inherited all the yarn needles from my mother rip she knew how to knit incredibly skilled we(me and my two girls) still wear them now crochet hooks some don't have any markings and i know she bought them in Mexico and some here in Israel the marks are haero or inoxal jmra md from England aero Millward BMC if you find yourself wanting them i will send them to you thank you Nora
that purple thread is stunning!
I would be excited too Crystal I’m so happy for you 🥰🤎
Your knowledge of these is astounding
I think you should start a museum with all your old thread, yarn, hooks and instruction books! I can remember my grandma and great aunt giving me handkerchiefs with really fine thread edgings crocheted on them. So pretty.
Girl,
you are so into those hooks and needles, it's scary in a good way. I must be insane, it's almost 2am sat moring sending these comments. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
What a lovely colors in the thread, have you seen vintage crochet channel she is brilliant, never used thread myself xx
@Just Vintage Crochet
Corinna is amazing and so fun to watch!!! Those mystery patterns are so difficult. She usually figures them out!
@@mariankay6482 I am also amazed at how she figures out those patterns!
That was fun!!! Yes cool!!! Lots of great finds!!! Almost like Christmas!!! Thank you for sharing!!!!
It makes me happy to see you so happy thank you so much. Much love 🫶
I'm happy you found more heros!!
Another hook you don't see much of is "dritz"... Its a Swiss made hook, but I've only seen the sizes for lace, or at least that's what my mom had. She would put lace on hankies. All JPCoats. She probably had all those books too!!! 😊 That brought back memories!!
Unfortunately, my SIL's just tossed all of them when she passed. 😢
The set of boyes looks exactly like the set that my grandmother gave me in the '60's!!!! Yes, I STILL have them!! And I learned to knit on those old boye needles in the early '60's!!! They were so unwieldy for a little kid. 🥰
(I'd LOVE another OLD steel "boye" 10, I use them for beading my knitting, they're so smooth!!! The new one's are c**p!! I had 2, one black, one silver.... I accidentally broke the black one.... I cried!!).
Agree, Gary is a colour maestro and absolutely sophisticated maker. You look gorgeous in that vest. Thanks for sharing all this stuff - I love all things vintage/Victorian too! ❤❤❤
I really enjoy looking at all the old hooks and needles too!! Very nice score on the hand carved and hero hooks!!
My Father gave me a box of hooks that he picked up at an estate sale or garage/yard sale. It had several HERO'S, GEM'S, old BOYES and SUSAN BATES. Also one bone like the one you got. There were a couple with that little cap on the end. They were on the hook end like a pen cap. I thought it was to protect the delicate hook.
Loved seeing the hooks but my favourite is the old booklets 🎉❤
Awesome find, I have several home carved hooks, my grandfather made 1 for my Mother when she was about 16.. I like the older crochet hooks, they just work smoother.
Yes you got some good fines, great video love the excitment on you face is precious! Hugs Liz x
That was fun . Hand made Crochet hooks . How amazing.
Thank you for showing us your findings.
Very cool find Crystal! Enjoy your new collection!🩵
Oh my. I’m in the process of crocheting dollies and table cloths. What an awesome find!!
The small knitting needles are double-ended for sox and sleeves. Those are tunisian crochet hooks. Congrats on your Hero hooks. Whan had a disaster when his mother threw away the envelope his Hero hooks were in.
In Canada, they use the word "dollar", but it is a completely different economic system and has different valuation. As a knitter, please try to keep the pairs together of the ones you keep. That really tiny knitting needle you kept has a partner.
I Absolutely LOVE the Hand Carved Hooks!!! 🥰💜
I love your happiness Crystal! It is coming through the screen right to me. I'm happy right along with you! Great finds! 😃💜
❤😊 Gorgeous cable knitted vest! Looks great on you! Gary does beautiful work! Enjoyed watching you go through everything. It is so cool to imagine all the yarns and threads that passed through all those hooks and needles and all the beautiful items made! Such a great find! ❤😊
What fantastic winnings. The books are awesome, I love to crochet with thread and make Dollie’s. I cannot seat and not do something with my hands. I multitask, old nursing habit. Enjoy your hooks, books, and thread. I have some hooks that have that hook at the end, I use it to hook the last stitch on the hook so it doesn’t unravel when I set my project aside.
Love the knitted vest from Gary - it looks so good on you .. loved seeing all the different hooks - good score with the hero's 🤗🧶👌
